I read The Younger Sister earlier this year and became an instant fan of Sally Hepworth. I love her writing style and ability to create great characters. The Soulmate is her latest, and is very good. I don’t feel this is her best book, but I still loved it.
Another winner by Sally Hepworth! Expertly written, with a slew of characters you can’t help but be suspicious of. Kept me guessing until the final few chapters. Well done!
NetGalley ARC (thanks!) - Sally Hepworth has yet to disappoint me, and the Soulmate keeps that streak alive. An entertaining portrayal of the best and most challenging parts of marriage…and murder. Loved it, total page turner that I finished in under 48hrs.
The Soulmate
Meh! I give this one three stars. As a super fan of Sally Hepworth I naturally have high expectations when it comes to her books. Sadly, “The Soulmate “ disappointed me a bit.
One thing I love about Sally Hepworth is her mastery of characterization. As a matter of fact, she is so good at characterization that she manages to create two of the most annoying characters that I’ve come across.
“The Soulmate “ tells the story of Pippa and Gabe who are trapped in a codependent marriage. Gabe suffers from manic depression and for the better part of their marriage he has made reckless decisions that negatively affect him and his family. Pippa deals with his behavior by burying her head in the sand and pretending everything is okay just for the sake of maintaining their image of the perfect family. Well, that doesn’t work so well for her because it isn’t long before Gabe’s actions spill into other people’s lives, which ultimately leads to their destruction.
What I do like is how Pippa eventually faces reality and admits that all is not right with her marriage. As for Gabe, I do not think he understands the concept of accountability. By the end of the story he
Is still a clueless surfer boy who does not seem to have any remorse for what he has done.
If you’re looking to read a decent domestic suspense then by all means, pick this one up. However, if you want better then I suggest checking out Sally Hepworth’s backlist.
This one started out really strong, and I loved The premise. Pacing is excellent, with short POV chapters that keep you intrigued. What didn’t work for me was the title. I kept circling back and wondering when this would make sense… and to me it never did. I thought the ending of him walking off the cliff was anticlimactic, as you never really get the feeling he cares that much about his wife…. Let alone that he feels she’s his soul mate. Gabes story was unique…. But it lost steam. Thank you so much for giving me the chance to read this arc. The family is one of my favourite books by this author.
While I enjoyed the ending, it took me a long time to get to it. I’m a pretty fast reader and generally love books written between 2 or more perspectives but this one seemed to drag on. It wasn’t a bad book at all, I just didn’t think it flowed very well.
From the outside, Pippa seems to have the perfect life. A perfect husband. A perfect house. Two perfect little girls. But are things as perfect on the inside as they are on the outside?
When Pippa and Gabe Gerard notices a woman at The Drop, Gabe does what does best - he tries to save her. But this time, he can’t. And that perfect life Pippa has, might just come unraveled one secret at a time.
Diving into toxic relationships, mental health and suicide, The Soulmate delivers a fast paced novel that proves that everything is not always as it seems.
The Soulmate is full of little twists along the way, and the big “WOW” twist was never there for me. A quick read, but I do recommend checking out trigger warnings as this book may not be for everyone.
Thank you to Net Galley for the advanced digital copy of this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ps. Always look out for your family and friends and therapy is never a bad thing ❤️

I received at complementary ARC of this book from Netgalley on behalf of the Publisher and was under no obligation to post a favorable review.
This was a compulsive read that kept me turning pages well past my bedtime. I couple who is seemingly perfect with two beautiful little girls lives begin to unravel when a woman jumps off the cliff that is behind their new home. Each chapter brings in new pieces to the puzzle of their lives and also of the life of the woman who died. I really liked this story, it involved some interesting topics along with mental illness and how peoples lives are effected by a family member who is struggling.
So thankful to have received an advanced copy by NetGally and St. Martin's Press!
This book drew me in from the start - Could not put it down! The house on a cliff, with a wild first few chapters. Twist and turns, page after page!
The story is told in the POV of Amanda and Pippa. Amanda was told in past tense and Amanda in present tense. Each time I thought I knew what was coming next, I was wrong.
This book touched up on a lot of topics ranging from marriage, to loss, suicide and mental health.
I was expecting a different ending. It felt a little underwhelming given the start of the book. After letting the book settle in my head a little - I realized the ending really tied the title of the book "The Soulmate" together, even if it wasn't what I was expecting.
Wow. Pippa and Gabe live with their two young daughters in a beautiful home with one drawback…a cliff that people often visit with intentions of jumping. Gabe is the town hero who talks them off the ledge, until he isn’t. This book is full of twists and turns and focuses on two very different marriages. I promise you won’t see the ending coming nor will you be able to put this book down!
Thank you for the ARC! Now here's my honest review: I couldn't put it down and yet... There was something missing for me. The ending felt rushed and sloppily put together but at the same time, the book sets up the ending seamlessly. I'm so conflicted because I didn't love it but I didn't hate it. My rating is a 3.5 rounded up to 4. I still recommend to add it to your TBR list!
WOW! 5 Stars for this twisty domestic thriller. The author really brings all the characters alive.
Pippa and Gabe are starting over. They purchase a beautiful Cliffside home to work on their marriage. The cliff is called The Drop because people are known to commit suicide by jumping. Ooh I can't tell you anymore! This is an amazing book!
This was my first-ever Sally Hepworth book and I’m excited to read more by her! Overall, this was a great mystery that had me turning pages as quickly as possible to figure out what happened. The build up and suspense were great, however, the ending fell a little flat for me. It was as though the author introduced so many issues with the male lead that it was then hard to wrap them up at the end. I’m not saying that I need a neat ending, but it just felt a little chaotic in the last few chapters. If you love books that require you to untangle messy webs of lies, you should definitely pick this one up. There’s relationships that seem too good to be true, lying, infidelity, and, of course, a mysterious death. CW before reading: suicide
4. 25 out of 5 - another great one by Sally Hepworth, it keeps you guessing right to the end. They leave enough breadcrumbs that you think you know what is up and then it all gets turned on you and I loved it. The characters were well written and engaging in their messiness which was all to real to believe. The descriptions are divine, I can picture this crazy house in my head.

I love Sally Hepworth and her books are always a twisty, page turner. Her new book The Soulmate was just that!
Although it wasn’t my favorite of her books, I could not put this one down! Every time I thought I knew what was happening new information would arise and I was shocked.
I loved the short, quick chapters and multiple POVs. It was cool to follow the story through multiple perspectives and watch everything unfold through the eyes of all the characters.
Thank you Net Galley for the advanced readers copy! The Soulmate will be out April 4, 2023!
I’m now on a thriller, suspense novel kick just in time for spooky season. What’s your favorite book in this genre?!
I was so glued to The Soulmate that I could hardly put it down. This was not my first time reading a Sally Hepworth novel, and like those previous novels, The Soulmate was exquisitely drawn.
Hepworth creates real characters, who are imperfect and who make mistakes. They muddle through life, creating their own misery, while trying to hide those imperfections even from themselves. They lie and they love, just like what happens in real life. The Soulmate is a compelling read. Readers hear from two female narrators, thus learning a story that possesses more depth. The two narrators, Pippa and Amanda, give the readers both sides of the mystery, shifting not just between perspectives but also providing important background information. The two narrations create tension, which is why it was so difficult to put down this novel. The mystery definitely holds the readers attention. The ending even kept me on the elliptical machine longer than usual, since I could not stop reading.
I thank the author and publisher for providing me with this ARC, in exchange for my honest review. I also want to thank NetGalley for introducing me to Hepworth, a wonderful find.
The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth
Publish Date—April 4, 2023
Those around us might observe our life situations with clarity and discernment. But, as we muddle through our days, we often don't see what we aren't prepared to handle.
Sally Hepworth does it again! The beloved Australian author delivers her eighth fast-paced, gripping novel of family, relationships, and our (often) odd behavior.
Pippa, Gabe, and their two young daughters move to a small coastal town in Australia. Their dream home sits at the cliff's edge, where people sometimes choose to end their lives. Gabe has a reputation for convincing folks NOT to jump. Until one day, his encouraging words don't work…
Was the death a suicide, an accident, or something else?
I raced through Hepworth's latest domestic suspense novel. Fans may also want to check out The Younger Wife and The Mother-in-Law.
A huge thank you to #netgalley and #stmartinspress for the ARC of this book. More reviews coming closer to pub date.
This was engaging, but there were a few triggers for me that had me squirming. I loved the twist at the end and especially the house-on-the-cliff setting, but I wanted the main character to not be such a pushover.
I couldn’t put this book down! So many twist! I loved the way the author went back and forth in time with the characters. I found myself getting frustrated with Pippa for tolerating Gabe, but such great character development!
