Do we all have a soulmate, a person you are destined to love, to be with, a yng for your yang, or is this a lovely myth that romantics love to aspire to?
Pippa has us believe that she has found her soulmate in Gabe. The couple with the two children have just moved into a dream house, but there is one huge setback and that is that is lies in close proximity to the cliffs which border the sea. The cliffs, (The Spot) also have the distinct reputation to being the perfect spot for people who wish to end their lives.
Gabe seemed to have a special ability to talk people who wished to end their days. He had become a "hero" for that special skill, but as one young woman is spied looking as if she was about to jump, Gabe is less than successful and as Pippa witnessed the supposed save she has the haunted feeling that this might not have been a save or perhaps a push.
The story emerges as we question Gabe's soulmate status as his personality becomes clear in the telling. We meet the dead women's husband convinced his wife would never take her own life, and shockingly revealed that Gabe knew both the husband and his now dead wife. The plot thickens indeed!
Totally engaging and intriguing as we delve into Gabe, the perfect husband, and Pippa awakens to the possibility that Gabe perhaps is not soulmate she convinced herself he was.. I very much enjoyed this story that kept me reading deep into the night.
Is there any such thing as a soulmate? You might have to decide that very question in the story.
Thanks go to Sally Hepworth, St Martin's Press, and Netgalley for sending me this engaging story.
Couldn’t finish this ridiculous slog. A husband so good looking his wife’s friends wonder out loud to her how she snagged him. Really?! She needs new friends. That same husband talks to people who come to the cliff by his ocean front home to kill themselves, and he literally talks them off the ledge while Pippa calls the police. Then one night, he can’t or doesn’t save the jumper, and supposedly he knew her. Surprised this is rated so high. The writing is sophomoric. Didn’t get past the first couple or three chapters. Net Galley read.
Wow! Sally does it again!
Living near a secluded cliff, people often come by a nearby bridge to jump! Recebtly moving there, Gabe has earned a reputation for talking people out of it. But then... one particular night a women does jump! Gabe's wife saw it all. But.. why did Gabe have his hands out..palm forward. And it turns out they knew her.
Sally keeps you guessing the truth as the tale continues. What is the truth? Pushed? Suicide?
So good!
Thank you to netgalley!
Based on the title, I was not expecting a novel like this and was pleasantly surprised by the storyline. All the main characters were likeable, their problems may not have been ones I have experienced, but I like the way they were all handled.
Picture washing your dishes and looking out the window to see someone about to jump off the cliff in your backyard with suicide as the intent. That is the scene greeting our couple many times a year. Hubby has become sort of a suicide whisperer as he has now talked 7 people into coming back from the edge and resuming life. Now comes number 8 and it is a very different experience, one that touches them personally.
The story goes back and forth between past and present and we hear from different characters so be sure to read the start of each chapter to know who is speaking and from which time period. I neglected to do that at first which was confusing to say the least. I learned!
I like the way the different story lines came together nicely; impressive the way it was handled and I didn't see it coming. I really don't want to say more so you can feel it's pull as you read just one more chapter...
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest opinion.
oh man!!! first sally hepworth book i have read and it didnt disappoint. now i know why she is recommended by many.
The story was just simple and the flow was easy to catch up on.
Having already been a pretty big fan of Sally Hepworth's, I was excited to dive into The Soulmate before even knowing the plot. The Soulmate begins with Pippa's character in the present day as she takes note of someone standing outside and alerts her husband, Gabe. Immediately you register the sinister tone of this, but it's not because she's fearful of an intruder; Pippa and Gabe live on a cliff where sadly people tend to come with the intentions of ending their life. Gabe is instantly described as having many charms and an uncanny ability to talk everyone out of this fatal decision as they wait for police to arrive on the scene, and in fact, up to this point, they've never had to witness anyone following through with their initial decision since living here. Tonight, however, that's all about to change. And to make matters even worse? When Pippa looks back up from being distracted by their children and registers that the woman is missing from the scene, she also sees her husband's arms outstretched, palms facing outward... as though he had just pushed the woman over the edge.
This novel flips back and forth between Pippa and Amanda (the unfortunate woman who went over the edge) as well as present day (with Amanda's present day being her afterlife observations) and past for both women. As it details the struggles both women have faced throughout their lives and their marriages, more information comes to light to show that Amanda was not a stranger to Gabe or Pippa. This startling knowledge gives Pippa continuous pause on the questions she still has regarding what she saw that night, and she begins to also grapple with her guilt about her own possible involvement in Amanda's decision. As you weave through the past and present of both women's lives, marriages, and connection, one question still remains: Did Amanda really jump of her own volition that night... Or was she perhaps pushed?
Overall, I really enjoyed this novel, and I would rank it as one of my top reads of Sally's works. I loved the atmosphere and setting of the story. I grew to love both Pippa and Amanda and rooted for them to both come out winners in their own respects by the end. I was satisfied with the conclusion to this story for multiple reasons. This is one that I would definitely recommend to others who haven't read anything by Sally before and also that I would recommend in general. Well done, Sally!
*Thank you to Net Galley, St Martin's Press, and Sally Hepworth for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
*The Soulmate will be released on October 25, 2022 in Australia and on April 4, 2023 in the US.
I really enjoyed this book. The story flowed really well, and I enjoyed the way it switches between characters and then/now time frames. The characters we're well written and the mental health struggles well represented. I will definitely be looking into more from this author.
Thank you Netgalley and publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion and review.
3.5 stars. This domestic mystery-suspense centers on Pippa and Gabe along with their two small daughters whose home is perched on a seaside cliff. Unfortunately, this portion of the walking path has become a prime spot for those considering plunging to their death. Hepworth wastes no time putting doubt into the reader’s mind and sets the tone for a sordid and layered story. While the pages turned quickly and I enjoyed the experience as well as the marital and family themes, I can’t quite get to a 4 star rating because it didn’t feel particularly distinct.
Netgalley and the publisher provided this book for review consideration, but all opinions are my own.
3.5 stars, rounded down.
This was a fairly enjoyable read for me, but it was a VERY domestic thriller. It’s not my favourite sub-genre and it took me awhile to get used to it.
Gabe and Pippa live near a local cliff that is known for suicides. Gabe has taken to talking people down from the edge and has become a local hero. One night a woman shows up and Gabe is unable to talk her down. When Pippa finds out her husband knew the woman who jumped, she starts to question everything she knows about him.
There are definitely some twists and turns in this story, but it felt at times to be more of a soap opera than a mystery/thriller. I still enjoyed the story but it was also told by two narrators and each narrator had 2 timelines. This was often difficult to follow and really disrupted the flow of the book.
Other than that, it would have been a super fast paced book. I did enjoy that Hepworth keeps you guessing and there are lots of layers to her characters.
Sally Hepworth delivers another page turner with The Soulmate!!
If you love a twisty, make you turn the page book, then grab this one when it's available. I did not see any of the twists coming and all my guesses were way off
Pippa and Gabe have been through some serious ups and downs in their marriage. When a lady shows up outside their house one night, at the cliffs they have no idea how much their lives are about to change. For better or for worse, these two are in for a ride.
Pippa and Gabe have what looks like an ideal life: two adorable girls, a beautiful home and a loving marriage. But as any reader of Sally Hepworth knows, things aren’t always as they seem. The story starts with a woman on a windswept cliff contemplating suicide. Great start, but then the plot slows way down as we get to know Amanda, Max, Pippa and Gabe. Marriage is complicated and often full of secrets and lies. There are mystery elements to this but really this is about the relationships.
I didn’t love this and I didn’t hate it. It was just OK. I prefer some of the author’s other works. The mystery for me either needed to have more mystery and have details about it throughout the whole book or less mystery.
When the big pieces of the mystery start to be revealed it is about a business and the impacts of that on the characters and their relationships. I prefer a different type of mystery. There were mystery elements early on as the reader tries to figure out was Amanda really suicidal or was she pushed? How do the 4 people connect. The mix of relationships issues and mystery elements just wasn’t quite right for me. I appreciated the inspiration for this novel (COVID lockdown) and the exploration of the impact of mental health on a marriage.
The reason for the title is revealed near the end. Trigger warnings for mental health disorders (ADHD, bipolar, suicide, etc).
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to #NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing me an advance copy of Sally Hepworth’s soon-to-be published domestic thriller, The Soulmate.
Trigger warning for readers: the story features sensitive topics including mental health and suicide.
I was so excited to be given the opportunity to read Sally Hepworth’s latest novel. I absolutely adore her thrillers and jumped right in the second I received it. The story alternates between Pippa and Amanda, two women caught up in a tangled web of their husbands’ business affairs. After one of the meets a grisly demise, do we know which characters are lying to others and which ones are lying to themselves?
The Soulmate is a psychological thriller meets family drama that will immediately pull you in.. The story follows a couple from courtship through marriage, children and the highs and lows they face dealing with a mental illness. When a suicide happens from a cliff outside of their house, things start to unravel. Secrets are revealed that could shatter their relationship, livelihood and put the family in danger. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat and up late into the night. The unexpected twists and turns will keep you engaged and the final chapter you’ll never see coming. A heart pumping 4 stars.
Thank you to #NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing me an advance copy of Sally Hepworth’s latest thriller, The Soulmate, in exchange for an honest review.
TW: Mental health subjects; Suicide.
Despite often seeing the author mentioned on many mystery/thriller book lists over the past several years, this is my first time reading a Sally Hepworth novel. #The Soulmate is a dual timeline, dual character perspective thriller set in a coastal town outside Melbourne.
Judging by the titles of her previous work, it is no surprise that the plot involves the degradation of a couple’s marriage or that the primary theme focuses on the intricacies of marriage and the evolution of a marriage relationship throughout a couple’s lifetime.
I did not particular care for this story. I would try reading another novel of the author’s before completely writing her style off (no pun), but this one just was not for me.
This was a great suspense/thriller! Ms Hepworth doesn’t disappoint!
A family is living next to a “million dollar path”, a path that shows a great and deadly view from a cliff drop off to the ocean, and that has multimillion dollar houses strung on it.
The husband talks off on a regular basis people who seem to might commit a suicide on the cliff until he doesn’t. The woman on the cliff jumps. Or does she?
This is the premise of a great story, full of suspense a and has you wonder all the way through! Highly recommend!
I really love Sally Hepworth’s books. They are always unique and you never quite know where the plot is going to go. The Soulmate was so great. Full of seedy characters, trouble marriages, lots of secrets, and interesting twists. I really loved Amanda’s POV in this story. It was different and added a really unique flavor to the story. The twist at the ending was a little different than I was expecting, but I didn’t see it coming and so it was still satisfying. I think fans of domestic thrillers, family dramas, and Hepworth’s other books will really enjoy this one as well.
If you like plot twists, this is the book for you. Sally Hepworth is an author that I will always read because I love her stories filled with suspense and this was no exception! There are two main POV’s from different characters, as well as a before & after for each character. I will say, I was a tad underwhelmed with a few aspects about the ending. It felt like there was a big secret leading up to the ending, but then nothing more was ever said about it. However overall, another great, suspenseful read from Sally Hepworth!
This was quite the adventure! Lots of secrets and a few good twists.
Gabe and Pippa find their dream home on a cliff. But their perfect cottage comes with dark secrets. This cliff becomes a popular spot for people to attempt to end their lives. Gabe becomes the voice of reason and tries to rescue the depressed souls until one day he doesn’t.
Gabe and Pippa quickly realize who this last victim was. Questions begin to arise, was her death premeditated or an accident?
Pippa has an internal battle on whether her soulmate is capable of murder? Can she handle Gabe’s alter ego and trust he’s telling the truth?
Pippa’s character was determined. She fought for herself and her girls. She was skeptical but fearless. Although, she made a poor choice out of anger, she came out even stronger in the end.
Gabe’s character was weak and broken. He had demons and mental health took over. He made decisions and acted on those decisions with no regard for how it would affect his family.
Amanda and Max were an interesting power couple and quite possibly the true soulmates in the end.
Pippa and Gabe live in a house on a cliff The cliff has become a popular place where people go to end their lives. So far, Gabe has been able to talk people out of it. One night a woman shows up at the cliff, Gabe tries to help her, but she ends up jumping anyway. Pippa learns later that she is someone Gabe and Pippa knew. Did she jump, or did Gabe push her? There will be many twists and shocking secrets slowly revealed before this story comes to an end. This was a slow burn thriller with a satisfying ending.
I received this book from Netgalley and I’m glad I didn’t pay for it. I really enjoyed The Good Sister and The Mother in Law-those were fabulous thrillers. The Soulmate however, was not a thriller like it’s purported to be. It was was a plodding, dark family drama. This book was written with a dual timeline and two narrators. Ordinarily, I love this in a thriller. In The Soulmate, one of the narrators is a ghost. This I did not love. The whole time I was reading all I could think was this was the 2022 version of The Lovely Bones. The story drags and nothing much happens until the last 30 or so pages. If you’re looking for a thriller, this is not for you. If you like family dramas you might like this.
