I totally loved The Soulmate! So many twist, turns and surprises. Sally writes the most amazing books. She is totally the best! #netgalley #thesoulmate # sallyhepworth
Okay WOW. I’ve had a few of Sally’s books on my TBR for a while but haven’t had the chance to pick them up yet - I’M SORRY - I now realize what a shame this was because holy moly this was a fantastic book. I actually just ordered some of her books this morning because I am obsessed. I HIGHLY recommend this book. Let’s get into it:
There is drama and secrets without being absurd or constantly referencing the secrets and saving them to the end - they were referenced and exposed in a great pcs that wasn’t frustrating. I fell in love with all the characters, I honestly didn’t know who to root for the most. The characters were so well developed, showed us their motives, flaws, emotions and how they grew throughout the book.
This is not really a love story but wow. We see two seemingly different relationships that are totally not what you’d expect. This was a unique take on toxic relationships that I haven’t seen done before. It was heart-wrenching and have a good insight into some of the challenges families with mental illness face.
There were twists that were actually surprising and kept me on my toes throughout the story.
This book was tragic, dark, hopeful and happy all at the same time. Not many authors can accomplish this without ridiculous plot points, too much explanation of motive, etc but Sally Hepworth took my breath away with this one. I can’t wait to purchase a copy for my shelf.
Thank you to NetGalley, St Martins Press and Sally Hepworth . All opinions are 100% my own
While I was initially drawn into this story (and felt that way for much of the novel). I found the untangling of the mysteries at the center of The Soulmate to be too anticlimactic and dull to warrant the lead up. I’m never a big fan of the dead victim being a narrator, so that wasn’t working for me either, but I mostly found this story to be a bit too wrapped up in odd details about money problems and other odd side plots that were so tangential they didn’t do anything except add fluff. This was the first time I’ve felt let down by Sally Hepworth.
I enjoyed the setting and plot of this book. There were a couple unexpected twists and I definitely did not guess the ending. Some parts of the story dragged a little bit but I had to keep reading because I wanted to know what the author kept alluding to.
this is an honest, voluntary review. this is an arc from netgalley**
This book was intense. From the very beginning, it hooks you. I enjoy the back and forth between then and now and how the main characters thoughts and emotions are portrayed throughout the book. I also enjoyed that there was a POV that I wasn’t expecting. I consider this a very great read if you enjoy true crime, plot twists and books that keep you on your toes. 5 stars! Will love to read some more of this authors work.
I absolutely could hardly put this book down. The story is told from view of characters both in present and past. There was a catch at ending that surprised me and caught me off guard. This book is worth reading. I would highly recommend. Giving it 5 stars which is not something I normally do as story really has to appeal to me for that rating.
Great read. I loved the mini-bombshells sprinkled throughout the book that clear up a few things at a time, but in no way spoil the ending. Well done.
"It’s as if, while living your life, you view the world through a straw. You see only the tiniest sliver, all of it from your own perspective. Other people have their motives, their backstories, their feelings, but you don’t know that unless they share them with you, and even then there’s every chance they’re lying or prevaricating."
When a family moves into a new cliffside cottage with beautiful beach views, they don't realize they have a front row seat to a popular suicide spot and a new role of talking people down from jumping off.
This was a domestic thriller with DEPTH. So well written, unique, intriguing and full of a multitude of emotions. It covers mental illnesses but also remains a fast paced thriller with a really great take on a dual timeline.
As someone who is very acquainted with ADHD, specifically in adulthood, I SO appreciated that it was talked about. I would love to find more books that highlight common disorders/conditions that so many live with. It was refreshing to felt "seen" and "heard" while at the same time enjoying a fictional drama adventure. Best of both worlds!!
Let me start by saying, I absolutely adore Sally Hepworth. I love that she writes from multiple points of view, as well as a dual timeline. This book is no different! Normally, I LOVE Sally's characters. She has this special way of making you root for her misunderstood characters. That is something this book was lacking, however. I HATED Gabe. I really only liked reading Amanda's POV. Although, I also really loved when Kat called Pippa out for being dumb 🤣 Overall, I give it 3.5 stars. It definitely wasn't terrible, but if you've never read Sally, maybe don't start with this one. I think I stalled so badly on this review because I wanted to like it more. Thanks to netgalley for allowing me to read early!
I liked this book a lot. It was such a clever novel. The relationships amongst all the characters, the development of the story so finely done and the plot quite elaborate! It is a book about romance, marriage and relations, personal struggles, mental illnesses, and mystery. It is hard to put it into words and be more specific without giving anything away. It is full of surprises and unexpected turns.
While reading an Advanced Readers Copy of this novel, I thought I discovered some faults and inaccuracies in the plot, but a few chapters later I realized it is all planned like that and there is a good explanation for the apparent holes or misconceptions. It all comes together perfectly!
It starts like a funny, easy story with a bit of romance and quickly it evolves into something much more ambitious.
The book revolves around marriage and personal relationships, its bliss and downs, the roles that each part plays, what is evident, what is not, what is public, what is hidden, how deceiving looks can be. The characters are so well developed and so convincing that when situations change directions it takes the reader some convincing to get adjusted to the new status.
The book also focuses on mental illnesses, how devastating they are, hard to identify, hard to confront, hard to treat and not always able to be resolved. I feel this theme could have been deeper developed.
Despite its funny comments and sense of humor sprinkle here and there, it is a book that makes you think about multiple serious themes.
It is a very quick read that will keep you motivated until the end.
It will be published in April 2023. Add it to your TBR list!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and comment on an ARC copy of this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for allowing me to read the ARC of this novel!
What can I say? You follow the tragic story of two women after a suicide off a cliff. A misunderstanding leads Amanda’s life to be cut short while Pippa struggles to hid the actual truth.
The Soulmate will leave you breathless, heartbroken and grieving for not the character you expect it to be.
Twists and turns with every chapter; and highlights to how mental illness can really affect a character’s life.
A great read!
The Soulmate is another winner from Sally Hepworth! Gabe and Pippa have recently moved to a cottage on the cliff in a coastal town with their two daughters. "The Drop" behind their home is a spot that people have frequently jumped from to end their lives. Gabe becomes a local hero when he starts talking to the people and manages to lure them away from killing themselves. One night, he isn't able to save someone. When Pippa looked out the window, she saw him much closer to the edge than he should have been with his arms out. It is ruled a suicide, but when Pippa discovers that Gabe knew the woman, she starts having doubts.
The book is told from the POV of Pippa and Amanda (the woman from the cliff). It is also broken down into "then" and "now" POVs. The story is incredibly hard to put down because it twists and turns constantly and it is AMAZING! Every time I thought I'd figured it out, there would be some tweak that had me realizing I was wrong and I had to guess again. I love when books are able to surprise me and this one did it several times.
Gigantic thanks to St. Martin's Press, Netgalley, and of course Sally Hepworth for this ARC!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an e ARC of this book.
Did not disappoint. Great character development and a plot full of surprises. Could not put it down.
This is the second book by Sally Hepworth that I read. I found her other book to be better written. I did enjoy reading this from each characters perspective (especially Amanda's from when she has passed away). I thought the "big secret" wasn't anything too scandalous.
I received a free ARC of “ The Soulmate” via Net Galley, the author and publisher.
I was not familiar with this author and her books, but the description of the story drew me to request a copy to read and review. The story, and the way the author framed is told in a fascinating and different way. At first the idea of having a dead person, or her ghost, put me off, but within a few pages , I was hooked. So do not let this touch of something macabre put you off., because mS Hepworth wrote it so well. “The Soulmate” is a book that will grab and hold your fascination with its different, but familiar , elements
Familiar- it involves two couples , Phippa and Gabe , Max and Amanda . Gabe
works for Max’s expanding high tech company as a customer relation expert whose job is to attract investors for the company’s new projects, and he is very good at it. Max is an entrepreneurial genius whose acumen has made him super-rich and Gabe wealthy.
Gabe and Pippa live in a is a fabulous seaside home that overlooks a cliff at the edge of the sea. The rear grounds are fenced off to prevent anyone , especially their young children, from straying too near the dangerous edge. One day, Pippa, in the kitchen sees a woman standing at cliff side straining outward. Pippa calls Gabe to look, and he, a man who has training in talking people down from leaping to their deaths, tells he is wife to call the police , then goes out to talk to the woman. Outside they two talk to each other, then suddenly the woman is gone, and Gabe is standing there alone , with his arms outstretched. For a moment, Pippa thinks, “ Did he push her?” .but then realizes that he must have been reaching out to grab the woman just as she leapt.
For the rest of the book the author builds on Pippa’s doubts.. We learn as the police do, that the woman who jumped was Max’s wife. Gabe must have known her. Max is suspicious. The police are, too. Gabe grows more and more withdrawn, causing his wife sleepless nights of doubt.
The lives of the two couples are revealed page by page. What motivated Amanda to jump? The author lets Amanda herself- or her spirit- tell the reader what bound Amanda so tightly to Max, her soulmate. Similarly, Pippa tells the reader how she and Gave became so close- soulmates. As the chapters alternate, hidden things are revealed that put stress on both couples.
“ The Soulmate” is a a novel whose pages fly by, with a plot that tangles ever tighter to a breaking point. The author has it all, including the reader, well in hand. As noted, this was my first experience with sally Hepworth, author., and I added her to my of authors to follow list.
Note to readers: nothing objectionable in this book. So enjoy a very good thriller.

Sally Hepworth does not disappoint! I really enjoyed the book. Definitely some plot twists -quite a few - that I didn't see coming. They were also plausible though, which I think is a unique talent. I kind of want to move to Gabe and Pillars idyllic home, but looks certainly are deceiving! This is my third Sally Hepworth and I will continue to recommend her crafty thrillers. Thank you for the preview!
I just love Sally Hepworth novels and The Soulmate did not disappoint! The characters are complex, flawed and believable; the location is atmospheric and fitting. Themes of murder, mental illness and infidelity are soften by contrasting themes of family, marriage and forgiveness. Short chapters keep the pace moving and alternating view points keep it interesting. Such a great read! I highly recommend!
Pippa and Gabe seems like a happy couple, who live in a beautiful home near a cliff. The cliff, unfortunately, is known as a suicide spot. Gabe has prided himself on being able to save 7 people from jumping. Then one morning, he isn’t able to save a woman who came to the cliff. Pippa watched the encounter between the woman and her husband from afar, and she’s not sure the woman committed suicide...
This story leaves you wondering who people really are, what they would do for someone they love, and explores mental health and it’s affects on people.
Soulmate by Sally Hepworth
Rating: 4 out of 5
Release Date: April 4, 2023
I am a HUGE fan of Sally Hepworth - I don't have to many autobuy authors - but she definitely is one of them. When #netgalley and #stmartinpress gave me the opportunity to read her new book Soulmate I obviously jumped at the opportunity.
This book is a little different than her other books - it centers around a small town with a very dangerous cliff that is very well known for suicides. Gabe and Pippa Gerard (oddly enough this is my maiden name) recently moved their family to a house that overlooks the cliff - and as you can imagine chaos ensues. It is told from alternating points of view - and one of the views is a different take than that of the normal Sally Hepworth read.
I've said this before and I'll say it again, pre-ordering books is the best way to support your favorite authors! So if Sally Hepworth books are an autobuy for you - go ahead and preorder this one!
Thank you to netgalley and st martin press for the ARC ebook of the Soulmate in exchange my for honest review.

Great story! I liked the way it’s told by Pippa (past and present), along with Amanda. They both turn out to be likable characters and I was very interested in their stories.
