The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth is a chilling novel of suspense that kept me guessing until the end. Ms. Hepworth has a way of making the happiest of situations flip until they become dark and you never know where the darkness will come from. This novel is no exception.
Gabe and Pippa have purchased their dream home, a cottage on a cliff where they plan to raise their children and live happily ever after. Shortly after moving in, the discover the cliff is a popular place for people to commit suicide. Gabe takes it upon himself to start talking to the lost souls who are there to die and manages to convince most of them not to do it. Until a woman jumps, despite Gabe's intervention. Or does Gabe push her? Pippa is not sure what she sees, but tells the police that the woman jumped on her own. The tension mounts as the story continues and lives are torn apart.
Thank you to the author, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Sally does it again! I flew through this book in just a couple of days. I needed to know how everything turned out.
I enjoyed the flashbacks and present day chapters with two POVs. This domestic thriller was definitely a page turner, and I loved the complexity of the characters. Sally tells the story of a family that encounters various struggles in their marriage, there are many secrets, betrayal and lies that will be uncovered. I thought I knew was what going to happen and then a twist was thrown in. I wish the ending offered a littttle more…. but overall it was such a great read!
This is a fast-paced domestic thriller; I devoured it in only a few hours!
I'm always hesitant to summarize thrillers, because I prefer going into them blind, so I'll limit my summary to a couple sentences: Gabe and Pippa live a life of wedded bliss in a cliffside home with their two young daughters. One evening, a stranger stands at the edge of the cliff and Gabe goes out to talk her down, but when Pippa looks out at them, she sees only Gabe, standing with his hands in an incriminating position. What really happened out there, and was this woman even a stranger to begin with?
Sally Hepworth does this thing where she opens SO MANY doors in a novel, that you start thinking of all these twisted paths the story could choose to follow. And then wham, she smacks you in the face with one you didn't actually see, and all your musings are proven incorrect. I love her stuff, and The Soulmate is no exception. A really fast read that hooks you from the start!
Thank you to Sally Hepworth, St. Martin's Press, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC!
Gabe and Pippa Gerard have moved to a cliffside home to start anew. Everyone loves Gabe (a stay at home dad). Women envy Pippa for having such a sweet, caring, loving husband. Unfortunately, what the Gerards did not know when moving is that the cliff is a popular suicide spot. Gabe has been hailed for his ability to talk people off the cliff from suicide until the most recent woman whom Gabe denies knowing. As the identity of the woman becomes apparent, secrets begin unfolding about the Gerards marriage, their past and what their life is really like. What I thought would be a trite story was definitely not. This book had twists and turns from the beginning.
I really loved this book so much . The pages kept turning . I wanted to know what was going to happen next . This is my second book by this author , I would read more , if she keeps writing . I liked the characters so much .
I couldn’t put this book down!
This story follows Pippa and Gabe, a married couple living outside of Melbourne by cliffs. One day, they happen to see a woman standing the the cliffs. And when Gabe goes to try to help her, the woman jumps. Or does she?
As an investigation takes place, Pippa and Gabe’s secrets start to unravel.
I tried so many times to guess what would happen next and I failed. Repeatedly. This book kept me on my toes and my jaw DROPPED at the ending.
This was so well written and the story flowed effortlessly.
This was one of my favorite Sally Hepworth novels yet. I always love her complicated family stories. This one was weird and twisty and dark, and I found it hard to put down.
Don’t let the title fool you. This is isn’t a typical love story. It’s also not a typical Sally Hepworth story.. I’m glad she branched out into a“dark” storyline. It was SO GOOD.
As she puts it in her acknowledgement, this is story is about the good and the bad of marriage. There’s a soulmate element to it. These two couples love each other, but….
Gabe and Pippa move to a home right near the edge of a cliff. Gabe gets involved with visitors to the cliff and this time, things turn out a bit differently. We also meet another couple and then see how the two couples intersect through the women’s past and present POVs.
This one comes out 4/4/23 and it’s a must read for any Sally Hepworth fan or any suspense/thriller fan.
Trigger warning: suicide, mental illness
CW: This review (and the book) discuss suicide.
This book started out really strong and had an interesting premise! Pippa and Gabe are a seemingly perfect married couple, and Gabe is a local hero known for stopping people from jumping off a tall cliff near their home. At the beginning of the book, Pippa sees Gabe out by the cliff with a woman, but this time she doesn't make it. Did she jump? Did he push her? It's all unclear. This book is told in alternating perspectives between Pippa and the woman who died and includes flashbacks and the present day. As you go through the book, you learn more about all of the characters and their motivations. It takes some twists and turns along the way. The reveals are spaced out well and this is definitely a slow-burn thriller. Unfortunately, I was let down by the ending because I didn't feel like all my questions were answered, but this book did keep my attention the whole time. I would recommend it to people who enjoy domestic thrillers about marriages and murder investigations but not to people who like books to be more dramatic or who really hate somewhat open endings. Also, I did not care for the way mental illness was represented in this novel. At times it felt like it was spoken of very negatively (as in, characters being villainized for having mental illnesses).
Overall, an entertaining book that hooked me at the start but disappointed me in the end, especially with the representation of mental health.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!
So many twists and turns made my head spin!!! You will definitely be up late on this one!!! I love all this Author's books and this book is no exception!! She gets better and better with her books!! You won't regret this book!! Buy now!!
Page-turning thriller about a married couple who live near a cliff, a notorious suicide spot. When her husband goes out to talk down the latest person at the drop, things don't go as planned and Pippa watches in horror as the woman falls, More alarming is that fact that it appears as though her husband had pushed her. The book then alternates between two main POVs, Pippa and the dead woman before and after the fall. Slowly the connection between all the characters is made and the reader is left wondering who the bad person is. Quick read, good suspense.
If you've never stayed up until 1AM to read more, this book will change that for you. If you think you don't like thrillers, this book will change that for you. If you think you can predict a plot line, this book will change that for you.
The Soulmate is a tale like no other. A twisty, surprising, edge-of-your-seat kind of story that makes you question everything you thought you knew about the characters you meet. It's a story of love, deception, dysfunction, misplaced trust, secrets, and chills that you won't be able to put down or forget.
*special thanks to NetGalley for the preview copy!!*
I read absolutely everything Sally Hepworth writes. Including her newsletters. Obviously at this point we all know Sally is an incredibly talented storyteller with truly impeccable pacing. While this book isn’t my favorite of Sally’s, I really enjoyed it and think it will be a hit and won’t hesitate to recommend it.
Gabe and Pippa appear to have it all, a beautiful home in a breathtakingly gorgeous spot and two beautiful daughters. Gabe is the primary parent and Pippa is a lawyer and as the story unfolds, you learn how and why these roles came about and it is JUICY and very well layered.
Gabe and Pippa, a couple with two young daughters, move to a cliff side house, with an unfortunate appeal for people looking to end their lives, after some personal and professional tragedies.
When a woman comes to the cliff side one day and falls to her death, Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim, setting off a chain of events and questions in Pippa’s mind that threaten the perfect facade of her marriage.
Did Gabe lie when he said he was unable to talk the woman down, after doing so for all of the others that had come to that same spot with suicidal intentions?
What might this woman have to do with Gabe and Pippa’s history or the reasons that brought them to this house?
What, if anything, is Gabe hiding? As more truths are revealed about Gabe, Pippa and the woman on the cliff, deep and deadly secrets threaten Pippa’s marriage while also calling into question the true intentions, history and identity of the‘soulmate’ whom she has loved and built a family with.

The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth, an author I eagerly follow since reading "The Good Sister (loved that one!)
One day, a woman is spotted standing precariously close to the edge of a cliff. Known as "The Drop." Apparently it is a well known place for folks who want to end it all... and Pippa and Gabe who live just yards away know this. That is why Gabe has found himself time and time again literally talking people off a cliff. Except one day, he doesn't-- did she or didn't she jump? Why is Gabe acting so strange and elusive now? That is the premise of this domestic suspense by popular author Hepworth (The Good Sister, The Family Next Door) Narrated by both the dead woman (a bit weird at first) and Pippa, the reader is filled in on the back story leading up to that fateful day. Lots of surprises and some twists and turns- I love when I THINK I figured it out and then see that I was wrong :)
If you like suspense with a bit of dry humor, (Pippa is quite LOL funny when she reflects on being a mommy) then you will enjoy this book. Coming April 2023 (Put it on your "want to read"!)
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's for sending this ARC in exchange for an honest review,
This. Damn. Book. Damn, it wrecked me!!! It was so good the second I started reading it! This book will hook you from the very second you pick it up. The twists and turns--my God. Sally Hepworth crushed this book. It's so good.
Ooo Sally Hepworth definitely has a way with words... this was one heck of a suspense novel and I had the hardest time taking a break to do anything else. Her writing style is fantastic and sucks you in with her characters and the storyline. Must read!!
I LOVED THIS BOOK! Sally Hepworth never disappoints - I would recommend this to everyone! I don't think you can go wrong with any of her books.
“The Soulmate” is a dual POV thriller by Sally Hepworth. From reading the Acknowledgements, I appreciated how Ms. Hepworth got the idea of this book - but also how her initial plan morphed into something a bit stronger. This book explores mental illness and how it effects marriage and families. I found a few of the twists to be a bit too nicely lined up, but most of the time they didn’t bother me. This book does a bit of jumping about in time, so pay attention to those chapter headings (Then vs Now). This was a quick and enjoyable read.
First of all, I am a HUGE Sally Hepworth fan. As soon as I see her releasing a new book, I am all over it!
The Soulmate was FANTASTIC! A five-star read, once again for Ms. Hepworth. Interestingly enough, this book centers around a stay at home father, Gabe, while Pippa is a money making lawyer in the household. They live in a glamorous home, which happens to be a top of a cliff, with their two daughters and family nearby. Though it seems idyllic, this cliff also happens to be a spot where many suiciders plan to jump. Gabe becomes a local hero as he has saved quite a few of the downtrodden, so much so that the papers interview him. Until one day a woman jumps, while Gabe is there. But did she? Or was she pushed? What does Gabe have to do with this?
Told from varying POV´s, we learn so much about our characters lives, including the deceased one.
This was unputdownable! I was left speechless with all the twists, and the domestic suspense left me reeling. Ms. Hepworth has truly crowned herself as the queen of psychological thrillers! Five stars for sure!
