Once again Sally Hepworth brings us a real page turner!! I was hooked as soon as I started the book and stayed up way too late because I could NOT put it down! The story unfolds very smoothly with twists and turns that I definitely did not expect! I enjoyed all of the characters in the story which I usually don’t!. Will definitely read this book again after it is published. This was my first ARC – a special thank you to net galley and St Martin’s Press for giving me the opportunity to read this. I definitely recommend this book!
4.5 stars
LOYALTY: Sometimes it's warranted....sometimes it's not.
A warning to all the readers: You will be saying the famous line "just one more chapter" throughout the book unless you are lucky enough to read it in one sitting!
Pippa and Gabe Gerard move to a beautiful house and their backyard overlooks the ocean up on a huge cliff (also known as The Drop). The Gerard's have lived there about a year and they have come to realize The Drop is a popular place people where people come to commit suicide. Living there a year now Gabe is now known as the suicide whisperer, having saved 6 people already. Then one day a woman shows up, Gabe is outside trying to convince her not to jump while Pippa is inside doing dishes watching out the window. The woman looks vaguely familiar to Pippa and something seems very off with Gabe. Pippa takes her eyes off them for just a second and then she notices the woman is gone. Did she jump? Why were Gabe's hands stretched out? Why did she look familiar? What the heck just happened?
Told by 2 POV'S Pippa and Amanda and also told in the then/now/after/before worked OUTSTANDING! The chapters were short and left you with a cliffhanger that I couldn't stop reading. This was a fantastic thriller and I enjoyed every second of it. 4.5 stars!!!!
Trigger warnings! Suicide
*Thank you St. Martin Press, Sally Hepworth, and netgalley for my gifted eARC*
This author! Pippa and Gabe seem to be in such a perfect relationship but it quickly unravels with the mystery of a woman who may or may not have wanted to die. The deeper the story goes the more the secrets are revealed. Good one!
This is the first book I have read by Sally Hepworth. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It kept my attention from the first page. I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.
OMGOODNESS what a great fun twisty thriller. This one was hard to put down. This book starts with a suicide. The plot just builds from there. Pippa and Gage have moved to an area overlooking the ocean. The only drawback is in the back yard is a place call The Drop a known place for suicides. Gage has been successful for talking people away from The Drop. This time he can’t. But the victim is not unknown to Gage or Pippa and complications of this death multiply. The story is told through the eyes of Pippa and Amanda the suicide victim. I loved this book. It had all the twisty, heart pounding unpredictability of Sally Hepworth's book. This will definitely be a best seller.
Sally Hepworth never fails to make her readers quickly invested in the lives of a domestic couple, and then throw some chaos into their lives....it's what she does best.
Pippa and Gabe Gerard have an idyllic family, with their two beautiful children, and they've just moved to a new cliffside cottage, and they're going to have happily ever after, right? Well, that wouldn't be a Sally Hepworth novel. The cliff that their homes rest beside has a spot that begins to be known as "The Drop" where people come to an end their lives, and Gabe has successfully talked several people away from the cliff, until one unfortunate night, standing outside her kitchen window; Pippa sees her husband with his arms outreached once a woman has just disappeared from standing beside the cliff. Did she jump? Or was she pushed?
Told in a "Before" and "After" timeline with POVs from the wife, and the woman who dies from the cliff, there are so many layers to this book! All kinds of twists and turns take place in a novel that is genuinely Sally's dissection of a marriage, and the ability to trust your partner and keep their secrets...
It'll keep the reader turning the pages into the wee hours of the night, because who doesn't want to know if there's evil lurking in your soulmate... ;)
Thank you to NetGalley for the early ARC!
I read this book in less than 10 hours yesterday. Once I got my hands on it, I simply could not put it down.
The story is between two couples that know each other more ways than one, with the timeline bouncing between then/now and before/after (the death). The plot is somewhat of a slow burn in my opinion, building to find out if the death of a character is suicide or a homicide. Like many Sally Hepworth books, I find myself guessing the outcome half way through, only to be proved wrong in the best way possible. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good suspense and thriller.
3.5 stars.
Sally Hepworth's a domestic thriller that revolves around family secrets and drama, this dual POV story started out much slower than I would have liked. While it did seem to increase the pace about 50% in, by that point I was a bit disassociated. However, in saying that, I can say that the last 50% really caught me. With short chapters and cliffhangers that ended each, once it got going it became easy to finish—I just wish it hadn't taken so long to get there!
This was an amazing story about marriage and the lengths and compromises we go through as a spouse. I loved the mystery and suspense. Well done.
This was just the type of twisty, fast-paced domestic suspense I love. It’s difficult to summarize this book without giving away key plot twists as there are several throughout. Just know that nothing is as it seems at the beginning. This was not quite a five-star read for me as I felt the ending fell a little flat, but I still would highly recommend. I was hooked from the first few pages. For fans of page-turning domestic thrillers, Sally Hepworth never disappoints! Special thanks to Sally Hepworth, NetGalley, and St. Martin’s Press for sharing this e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
Loved this book and Sally Hepworth! A fast moving story with some mystery to it. Well developed characters. A very interesting study of different personalities and relationships. Thank you Netgalley and St. Martins Press for the prerelease copy of this book for honest review. I really enjoyed it.
With its dynamic plot, this twisty domestic thriller is completely binge-worthy. Told from two POV—Pippa's and Amanda's (the dead woman)—the writing is enthralling and addictive. With its layered and complex characters, The Soulmate is perfectly executed.
I have nothing but effusive praise for Sally Hepworth's novels. Her characterizations are rich and layered, as are the family dynamics. The Soulmate is more than just a story about marriage, it is a character driven thriller that will have readers anxiously turning pages to its stunning conclusion.
I really enjoy Sally Hepworth’s books, and I had a very hard time putting this one down! It was fast paced and exciting… I liked that the story was told in dual-timeline by two characters: a past and a present for Amanda and a past and a present for Pippa. For reasons that will quickly become apparent to any reader, I did not care for the present day storyline told by Amanda (it was just too weird)… And the ending was a bit of a tossup for me - I didn't like the weird randomness of the twists. But, overall, I enjoyed it and I was glad to read it.
The Soulmate is a suspense novel set in Australia. It follows the marriage of Gabe and Pippa. They are part of the picture perfect family. They recently moved into a cliff side home in a small coastal town. Unfortunately, the cliff near their home is a well known suicide destination known as The Spot. Since their move, Gabe has spent hours talking people off the edge. Except one. Did she jump? Or was she pushed?
Written in multiple POVs, it is fast paced thriller with plenty of twists and turns. I gave this 4.5 stars. People will say that after the intense build up of the story, the ending is underwhelming. But they would be remiss to forget that the calm after a storm.
Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martins Press, and Sally Hepworth for providing me with an ebook ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you Netgalley, Sally Hepworth and St. Martins Press for the opportunity to read this book early. This book the Soulmate gripped me from the very first page. A tragic love story with dysfunctional family dynamics intertwined into the story. Such a fast paced story enticing me to read page after page. Plot twist after plot twists. Amazing book told from the point of views of Pippa and Amanda, the spouses of Gabe and Max. Totally blew my mind. Great book by Sally Hepworth. Be sure and pick up a copy on release day of April 4th 2023, you will not be disappointed trust me on that.
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Interesting thriller involving two couples with a ton of secrets. Gabe is a complex man and his marriage is even more complex. Add a dangerous cliff and you got a good plot. Writing is strong and characters even more so. Very enjoyable.
Thank you Net Galley for an ARC of Soulmate I couldn’t read it fast enough. I loved this book. So many exciting twists and turns. I think you will be surprised at some of this book. Two families with different stories yet not so much. I would highly recommend this book.
So this book is getting a ton of good press. Currently it's sitting at 4.37 on goodreads with over 500 reviews so that is a good sign and I was really excited to read this one.
We have Gabe and Pippa Gerald who after recently married purchase their dream home: A perfect little cottage right at the edge of a sea facing cliff. But, little did they know, this spot is one frequented by people ending their life by jumping off into the sea below. Luckily Gabe has a gift of talking people off and eventually saves many lives from jumping. He is like the Dog Whisperer but without the dogs. But one day Pippa watches her husband do his thing with a lady who soon jumps! Or is she pushed?? Uh oh. Here we go.
What follows is twisty tale about how much we know the people we love so much. And that is what Gabe is to Pippa..... Her soulmate.
What works: Short chapters that draw you in. Twists. The last quarter of the book is a page turning masterpiece. Really liked the two POVs between Pippa and Amanda (the dead girl who fell to her death in the beginning. There is even a present place POV with Amanda where she knows she is dead. It works)
What doesn't work: And this is the drawback of the book in my opinion. I didn't like it as much as most of the reviews I read just because I thought it was too.... unsafe? There were no real risks taken in the book. It's also just as much of a love story as it is a thriller. Once again this is just my opinion and I know a ton of people are going to love this book. The ending is great and what makes it a 4 star book for me.
I really appreciate St. Martin's press for giving me the opportunity to review this book and it has a publication date of April 4,
This advance reader copy was given to me for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Wow! Simply wow! The Soulmate is the 4th book of Sally Hepworth that I have read and this is my favorite.
Soulmate is filled with so many twists and turns, it was hard to put down- I had to know what happened. And that last twist I did NOT see coming at all!
I was so excited to have snagged this as a Read Now. I have read a couple other books by Hempworth, and this is the first one I gave 4 stars to. I was immediately engaged with the story, short chapters, and found myself just easily breezing through the book. We follow Pippa and Gabe and their two daughters as well as Max and Amanda. Pippa and Gabe live overlooking the ocean. On this overlook is a cliff known by the locals as suicide cliff. Many times, Pippa has looked out her kitchen window, seeing people make their way over to the edge. Panicking, as anyone would, each time, she calls for her Gabe. Gabe is known as some kind of suicide whisperer, being able to talk people away from the cliff's edge, saving lives. One day, Pippa sees a woman and calls for Gabe, but the outcome this time is not the same. Throughout the novel, we learn a lot about Pippa/Gabe and Max/Amanda's relationship and mutual business histories. I enjoyed reading about Pippa and Gabe. It was strange reading from Amanda's perspective, as she was deceased, and I admit that I didn't quite care for that at first, but it grew on me as the story went on. At about 70%, things in the storyline just kind of changed or finally decided to progress. I really did not enjoy the fact that a shady business incident ended up being the culprit to the story. However, I did enjoy the final reveal about the secrets between Max and Gabe. If you are looking for a book with a happy ending, don't read this, because it is not in any way happy, and in fact, is quite sad. I am left feeling somewhat down after finishing it. Of all of Hempworth's books, this by far, is the best in my opinion. I enjoyed the writing style, short chapters and characters. I just didn't care for the main reason everything was finally hitting the fan. 4 stars!
