Want a read in one sitting romantic thriller?? The Soulmate, Australian iconic author Sally Hepworth's newest might be for you!
The Soulmate is a dual timeline story following 2 main characters Amanda and Pippa as they meet, fall in love, and fall slightly out of love with their 'soulmates.' You get a police investigation, rich people drama and lots of infidelity. This book felt slightly disjointed to me compared to Hepworth's other novels, though if you're looking for an easy, fast read I would recommend.
This story was great and I loved the characters but there was a few spelling errors or words that wasn’t in sentences or grammar errors. I’d go back and go through it all with a fine tooth comb and fix stuff also, to me there was no need for all the characters thoughts or “side notes” in the brackets it just really kinda took away from the story, you could have just had the thoughts there without the brackets. Some moments were a bit slow but overall I loved the storyline. But with the errors and stuff it’s a 3.5 for me. If there wasn’t so many trip ups for me I would have given this a 4 stars
Enjoyed this book! There were many twists and turns and it kept you intrigued throughout. There were several moments as a mental health professional I felt like may not be accurately portrayed, but did not take away from the book. Would recommend!!
Was graciously gifted this book by NetGalley for my honest review.
I really, really enjoyed this book! I am pleasantly surprised at how good this was after I didn't enjoy either of Hepworth's most recent releases (The Good Sister and The Younger Wife). The story kept my attention well and some of the twists I didn't see coming. I loved the multiple POVs - especially Amanda's, including after her death. The plot was suspenseful and I enjoyed all of the side characters as well.
The reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that I did feel the ending was a little weak. I wondered if perhaps Gabe and Max were related so I felt it was an obvious "twist" to add that in at the end. Overall though, I loved the book and will recommend it highly to others!
I loved this domestic thriller! I liked how little pieces were slowly revealed over time, it made me keep guessing and want to keep reading. I was a little uncomfortable with some of the death by suicide scenes but overall this was a really fun read. I love Hepworth's style.
I want to start by saying this book was fantastic in the way that mental health was covered. Ms Hepworth thoroughly researched and portrayed the condition written about in a fair way. I knew the ultimate diagnosis of Gabe long before it was revealed, because it is an illness that I personally live with. I am not as extreme of a case as Gabe, but it was easy for me to recognize it very quickly. I normally hate the way people with this illness are portrayed, mostly it’s as monsters and unstable people. Rarely do you see where the person gets help, and can live a full life. Know help us out there and available to those who need it.
Now onto the story. Gabe and Pippa moved to a house with a cliff side, known as suicide point, and since living there Gabe has saved 6 lives - but unfortunately the 7th is lost. Whole the death is ruled a suicide, Pippa is troubled with what she saw that night - it didn’t look like to her that the woman jumped. Pippa works tirelessly to uncover and grapple with what she saw. The husband of the wife who jumped doesn’t believe it was suicide either but he and Pippa have a sordid past. Will Pippa be able to uncover the truth before her family is placed in danger?
I loved this book because I related so hard to Gabe, Pippa’s husband. The book overall was fantastic and written very well. The characters were well developed and the twist was quite entertaining and enjoyable. I give this book 4.5 rounded up to 5. I can’t wait for you to read this book when it’s published next April 4th. Huge thanks to @netgalley and the publisher for my advanced copy. Please add this to your tbr! You won’t be disappointed.
In true Sally Hepworth fashion, this was binge worthy. I’m talking walk, talk, eat, brush teeth, all while reading. I couldn’t put this one down. I enjoyed the constant twists. Nothing is what you believe and the dual POV as well as the now & then timeline keeps the unraveling story moving.
Another great Hepworth book. This is an author who doesn't take the same old plots and just change a few things. All her stories are unique and give you different emotional journeys. And they're completely different from the rest of the books out there, but not in a silly, convoluted way. This one features 2 different couples and their connection to each other. The book starts with a death, but the rest of the story isn't really a murder mystery...it's more of getting to the bottom of all the moments and events leading up to it. Very good read.
Two couples with secrets upon secrets examine the question,”What would you do for your soulmate?” Sally Hepworth is fast becoming a favorite author. The Soulmate is immensely readable and fast paced. Like her others, this book is twisty and turny in the best ways, and I didn’t see any of it coming. Thanks to NetGalley for an amazing ARC in return for an unbiased review.
Thank you to Netgalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review,
Sally Hepworth has become a must-read for me. The Soulmate does not disappoint. I flew through it in two days. It’s a twisty page-turner. Although some twists I predicted early on, it was a very enjoyable read and a book I will recommend to my friends.
This was an interesting and unique story. I was anxious to see how it would end and basically read it in two sittings. Some of the characters were likeable; though many were not. The story was told from two different perspectives (Amanda's and Pippa's) and across two different times (Now and Then / Before and After). I wasn't a huge fan of all the jumping around. 3.5 solid stars.
If you are a fan of Sally Hepworth, you have got to read this book. It is filled with twists and turns and kept me reading way into the night. I could not put it down. Told from different perspectives in each chapter kept my interest throughout this book.
LOVE! The Soulmate is all the things I love in a Sally Hepworth book. A wonderful setting on Australia's coast, lovely characters that you are rooting for, and of course the love and hardship of family. One major trigger warning is suicide, as this book starts with a suicide and has many themes of mental health and suicide. When Amanda jumps from "The Drop", an infamous cliff for people to commit suicide, Gabe is gutted. Since living in the neighborhood he'd saved the last 7 souls that came to end their lives. As the book develops, from Gabe's wife Pippa's point of view, as well as Amanda's from beyond the grave, secrets are revealed. The twists and turns keep you guessing to the very end with a spectacular finish.
Absolutely loved the latest thriller from Sally Hepworth! Well written plot that keeps the reader invested and guessing til the end. The storyline grabs your attention and holds it throughout!
Pippa and Gabe Gerard recently purchased a beautiful, cliffside home in Portsea, a small coastal town outside of Melbourne. They are hoping for a fresh start after recent difficult times. They have reorganized their family structure and Pippa will now be the primary earner of the family with her work as a wills and estates lawyer and Gabe will be a stay-at-home dad to their daughters, Asha and Freya. What they were not expecting as part of their new lives is that they would be living at a popular suicide site called “The Drop”. Gabe, being a very charming and handsome man, has managed to talk several people out of ending their lives by jumping off The Drop and has even had an article praising him published in the local paper.
When a woman appears at The Drop one night, Gabe goes to speak to her. As Pippa watches from inside the house, she sees the situation begin to escalate as the woman begins waving her hands and Gabe begins inching close to her. Pippa turns away for a moment and when she looks back, the woman is gone and Gabe is standing with his palms outstretched in way that suggests he may have pushed her over the cliff’s edge. When the police arrive, Gabe says that the woman claimed that she was devastated because her husband had been unfaithful and she jumped over the edge despite his efforts to stop her. Gabe seems to have an answer for all of the police’s (and Pippa’s) questions about the suicide, so Pippa puts her doubts out of her mind until she finds out that Gabe knew the woman who had jumped. Her name was Amanda Cameron and Gabe previously worked for her husband, Max. Could Gabe have had a reason to end her life?
Sally Hepworth never disappoints – This was a wonderful read! I found myself really invested in the story and the characters. The story is told from the point of view of Pippa (Now & Then) and Amanda (Before & After). I thought it was very clever to write stories from Amanda’s point of view and I found myself invested in her story most of all. This book shows how complicated relationships can be between partners and had some really heartbreaking moments, especially at the end. So many twists and turns that the author delivers in an expert fashion! At this point, I’m pretty sure that Sally Hepworth can do no wrong :) I know that this book isn’t even out yet but I already can’t wait to read what she writes next!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth is about two couples with remarkable relationship parallels, intertwined into each other’s lives in ways none of them fully understand until they share a tragedy.
From a structural perspective, I love the dual POV here. I think it’s an interesting and effective choice as each layer of the narrative unfurls. I think there are some masterful twists too. These are by no means always necessary in a thriller but are certainly enjoyable here. Though I generally feel pretty comfortable guessing what the twists are in story, I wasn’t right much of the time for this one - and I loved that!
In fact, I don’t have much I disliked here. I wondered if Mei’s presence is necessary as her character didn’t add very much to the narrative. This inclusion certainly did not detract from the story, however. All in all, it was a thrilling read that I actually had difficulty putting down. Bonus for me - now that I know Portsea exists, I can’t wait to visit. Thanks to NetGalley for this e-ARC!
This was so good!! After my last read was kind of slow and dragged on a bit, this one was deliciously fast paced! I read it in a day and found myself stopping what I was doing to come back to it.
I feel like Stefan on SNL, but this book has it all: family drama, psychological thrills, a suicide that could be a homicide, and infidelity.
Such a great read! I loved it!
Thank you to #netgalley for this ARC of #soulmates
Pippa and Gabe are a married couple who had moved to a house on a cliff overlooking the ocean in New Zealand approximately a year earlier. Gabe had recently been recognized as somewhat a hero for redirecting seven suicide attempts. Another couple, Amanda and Mac, have a summer place nearby. At the start of the novel, Amanda has come to the cliff and dies as a result of falling off. This is the story of the interrelationships of each couple and with their mutual ones. It is written in the voices of each woman both in the past and the present. It is complex and, in my opinion, starts very slowly however after the first quarter the reader will be hooked. It is a novel one will not soon forget. Thanks to Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press for an ARC for an honest review.
Absolutely fantastic plot! Could not put the book down once I began reading it. Cannot wait for it to be released. Will recommend it to everyone I know!
This is the kind of book that will keep you up all night, tucked up under a blanket telling yourself "Just one more chapter."
The story follows along with Pippa and Gabe. They move to a cottage along a cliff edge and soon find themselves having to save others from trying to use the cliff as a way of suicide. One night a woman shows up and Pippa looks out the window to find Gabe out there with her. Suddenly the woman is no longer standing there and Gabes arms are outstretched. Did she jump or was she pushed?
This book is told from two different point of views and time frames, the past and present tense. The Author has such a captivating writing style, the story line just grabs your attention from the very beginning. The world building plays such a huge role in this story, setting the scenes so you feel like you are there. The Characters are written beautifully. Keeping you engaged and involved with them and their lives.
The suspense and thrill of reading each chapter and finding new twists and turns truly keeps you wanting more. I would recommend this book.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
