A house on a cliff, with a nice normal family inside. Occasionally the husband heads out to the dropoff, if a passerby looks a little too much like they're going to jump. He always talks them down...until the day he doesn't, and a woman jumps. Or did she?
That's the springboard for Sally Hepworth's tense domestic drama, as lawyer/mom Pippa wonders why her husband Gabe seems elusive about the woman who died, as the dead woman hovers in the ether commenting on the events after her demise and what led her to that cliff-top, and as the layers on all-around-good-guy Gabe are slowly peeled back. I read in one sitting on a long plane flight, and enjoyed every minute.

This twisty book had just enough intrigue to keep me turning pages. Great suspense and characters. Sally Hepworth is always a must-read for me!

I'm a huge fan of Sally Hepworth so was delighted to receive this one! And I loved every minute of it! Told in "before" and "after" moments, we witness two couples: Max and Amanda as well as Gabe and Pippa. It begins with a potential suicide off the cliff of Gabe and Pippa's beach house and things only get dicier from there! The plot is complicated and yet so satisfying that I raced through it to determine how and why these couples are so interconnected. Hepworth speaks to themes of fidelity, mental illness, revenge, trust, and love. I will read anything she writes...so incredible!
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!

If you like Sally Hepworth, you'll enjoy this book. It's a twisty domestic thriller with morally grey characters.
I wasn't entirely thrilled with the depiction of mental illness throughout. Partly through a specific lens that looks to salvage a person on the other side of it. But on the other hand the slow build to certain things was well done and important to the overall narrative.

I’ve read a lot of thrillers with twists and turns this one really surprised me. I read it in two days nonstop can’t wait for another book by this author

I’ve not been a big Sally fan up until now. This was my favorite book by far. A great mystery that leaves you questioning who to trust. I will be recommending to everyone!

I was absolutely hooked by 9% and that momentum held the entire way. I loved this book!!! Pippa and Gave live a happy life with their two daughters in a beautiful home. They live off a gorgeous cliff known as “The Drop” a popular suicide spot for locals. Gabe has heroically saved multiple people from jumping, it’s what he is known for in the community. Until one day, a woman jumps and Gabe cannot save her. What seems like a simple accident becomes way more complicated when it’s revealed that Gabe knew the woman who jumped to her death. This book was full of twists and turns that u did not see coming. It kept me on my toes. I absolutely loved it. The character development and relationships were so complex and interesting. I would recommend this book to everyone! One of Sally Hepworth’s best, in my opinion!

There are very few books that make me audibly gasp when I come across a plot twist. There are very few books that make me root for characters and become fully invested. This book is now one of them and also being added to my 5 star shelf! Sally Hepworth’s writing style is so good! I could not put this down! Thank you @netgalley for the arc.

Thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. I’ve read several other books by this author and was anxious to read this one as well. It was another solid thriller filled with the potential of unreliable narrators. There was a good twist that provided a payoff at the end of this quick read. I’ll read more by this author in the future!

This book kept me engaged but I felt like it wasn't quite as captivating as it could be? The first half of the book is mostly filling in the blanks of the characters backstory before the suicide or homicide event happens. After about the first half things start moving forward a bit and it's pretty hard to put down after that! Overall it's a solid 4/5 and definitely worth picking up.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an eARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Great book! It’s such a fun read and the characters are great to get to know. It reads easy and I was hooked from early on. I did not guess the twists in this book- my every guess was wrong! Totally recommend this book and now I see what the hype was about!

Thank you Net Galley for this ARC for my honest review.
This is my first book by this author. It was different from what I am used to reading, but I will read more of her books. It was intriguing and interesting. I love the different characters POV. The way it came to an end really surprised me.

First off, thank you for the ARC. I give this book a 3.5 rating out of 5. There was not a whole lot of ohhhh ahhh factor going on for me. A majority of the first half of this book was very bland and just giving character explanation. I figured most of the plot out early on. I did like how the author alternated because past and present and we got to see the dead womans perspective on things. Towards the end, the plot peaked anf was pretty interesting. The premise to this story was pretty interesting and was a good read.

Pippa and Gabe appear to be the perfect couple. They adore each other and their two girls. However, Gabe is unpredictable and mercurial - Pippa can never be sure what is coming next or which secret will be revealed. Max and Amanda have a very businesslike arrangement in their marriage. There is little emotion expressed and their partnership runs like a well-oiled machine. Then one day a woman falls from The Drop - the steep cliff right next to Pippa and Gabe's house, and Gabe's attempt to save her fails. But did she really jump, or was she pushed? What other secrets are lying in wait?
This was an enjoyable, fast-paced domestic thriller and a very quick read. The chapters are quite short and the POV switches between the four main characters. There are just enough secrets revealed at intervals to keep the reader engaged, but I cannot say there are any real shockers or big plot twists in here. It is ultimately a well-constructed novel with a storyline that held my interest throughout, and a good summer read to grab before summer disappears. If you are already a fan of Sally Hepworth, no doubt you will enjoy this one.
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press!

I enjoyed The Mother in Law and when I saw this on NetGalley I was excited to get to read it. I was hooked from the start, and the fastest I’ve finished a book in a long time.
So many different twists and turns, I always thought it had a twist figured out only to be dead wrong. I could not put it down because I just needed to know WHAT NEXT?! Loved it, will read anything by Sally.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s for this advance review copy—all opinions are my own.
Sally Hepworth never fails to deliver the compelling, suspenseful, richly layered story. THE SOULMATE, like her other novels, is so well-paced, riddled with subtle twists and turns that kept me curious and guessing, and I thought it built to a strong and satisfying, albeit sad, conclusions. While I tend to often struggle when mental illness and neurodivergence are leveraged in thrillers and suspense, often pejoratively aligned with the villain, I did feel Hepworth took care to try to ensure that didn’t happen here, despite mental illness playing a central part in this story.
Content notes: suicide, depression, postpartum depression, bipolar disorder, infidelity, brief mentions of blood and gun violence,

Hepworth is a wonderful writer, so was excited to get a chance to read this courtesy of Netgalley. The story is about couple who live in a new place overlooking a cliff, which is known to have suicide victims jump. The husband is described as a handsome fellow who successfully uses his good heart and able to talk people out of jumping, except for that one evening where he did not save the lady who ended up falling to her death off the cliff, but what happened?
The wife witnessed the event and saw it look like her spouse pushed the woman off the cliff and the mystery remains, whey did he lie?
The relationship between husband and wife appear to be loving and a happy family but in reflecting back with the way story tells us it does not make the relationship feel strong, there are a lot of assumptions made and no questions about behaviors. Then they describe husband as having ADHD and chalk off his strange behavior to that.
With the woman who died, her husband is trying to unravel what happened.
The story felt shaky in that it reverts back and forth from past to present, from various points of view, very confusing and long winded, leaving me not enjoying the story as I initially had hoped turned. The title of the story seemed unfitting since neither of the couples were very likeable or portrayed as each other’s soulmate. I had higher hopes for this one but the story left me feeling disappointed.

This book was amazing, as I have come to expect from Hepworth. It centers on 2 women, Pippa and Amanda; the former witnesses the apparent suicide of the latter. There is so much going on here and the book is really focused on the relationships that these women have with their husbands, though of course there is a shared storyline that pulls it all together.
One thing that Hepworth always does well is to adhere me to characters even when I don’t agree with them, and that’s what happens here. I feel for all 4 primary characters throughout the book even when sometimes I want to yell at them. The POVs switch between Pippa and Amanda and go back and forth between a few years ago and current times, which is a style I really enjoy. There is mystery throughout and a couple big twists that I did not see coming.
If you like domestic suspense, mysteries, or just reading fantastic books, you’ll like this one and I encourage you to pick it up! Thanks to NetGalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was really looking forward to this book and while I enjoyed for the most part, as someone who struggles with mental illness, I think the injustice it does with that topic really turned me off and rubbed me the wrong way. Meh.

This was a good twisty suspense novel. I have read other books by this author and always is a good read. This book reads fast and the twists keep you engaged. Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
