ARC Review: The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth

publication date April 4, 2023

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ 5 stars

The twists and turns of this book kept me on the edge of my seat. Hours later…. I’m still thinking about the ending.

Pippa and Gabe live near a cliff… this cliff has been marked as the suicide cliff by many. Gabe has been successful at keeping jumpers from actually making the leap… until he isn’t successful. But then you learn who the jumper was, and begin to question if he even tried at all to help.

This novel has multiple POVs as well as time frames. It keeps you guessing and wondering how far people will go for their soulmate.

The Soulmate will be available on April 4, 2023.

Thank you NetGalley, St Martin’s Press, and Sally Hepworth for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I really enjoyed this one. Hepworth has taken two couples whose lives are intertwined and written a thriller around them. One of the characters dies in the opening scenes but was it a suicide, a murder, or an accident? The tale is told from several viewpoints jumping back and forth from the present to the past. This format works very well in establishing the backstories as well as revealing some of the twists, of which there were many. I had a hard time putting it down. 4.5 stars rounded to five for me. I thank NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.

Anything by Sally Hepworth is an auto-read for me at this point. Her writing is incredible. She has such a gift of story-telling, wrapping you into this world and then bringing it crashing down around you. This book was no different. The set-up was incredible and the twists were unexpected. I have already recommended to multiple friends and am already excited for what Sally puts out next!

I saw that THE SOULMATE was a Read Now option on NetGalley and downloaded it immediately. I've seen so many positive reviews of Hepworth's other domestic thrillers floating around on goodreads so I was excited for the opportunity to read an E-ARC of her latest book!

THE SOULMATE is about Pippa and Gabe Gerard. They just moved, with their daughters, to a new home on the coast of Australia. The move was suppose to be a fresh start for the family, but the home is located alongside "The Spot"-- a popular cliffside place where people go to end their lives. One night, Pippa spots a woman at The Spot and Gabe rushes out to see if he can coax her away. Unfortunately, the woman plunges to her death...but did she jump or did something more sinister occur?

Ok yall...cue the "white woman spiraling about her marriage and coming to terms with the psycho husband she married" trope. Honestly, it's one of my favorite thriller tropes to get lost in so I was HERE for it. I love an unreliable narrator. I love a novel about a complicated marriage. This book kept me hooked!

The one aspect that I didn't love was that the dead woman, Amanda, was a character/narrator throughout the story. She filled in a lot of the gaps/holes in the plot, but I didn't like that she was basically a ghost narrating what was happening. A ghost aspect in a story rarely works for me though--it might work for you!

Overall, four stars!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Sally Hepworth just added more books to my tbr pile. I have never read anything by Sally before this book and now I need to read more of her books. The Soulmate was a thrilling read and had me guessing through the entire book what really happened. The suspense of this story had me flying through this book faster then I could’ve expected. I couldn’t have guessed that that would be the ending but I will say it was a very satisfying read. I’d like to thank the publisher and Netgalley for an arc to read and review this great new thriller.

The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth Domestic suspense drama with a multitude of secrets, lies and unconventional behaviors. Told from unique POVs, some of the storylines blurred and were not resolved. The ending was a bit of a let down, Max did not seem true to his character as presented throughout the book. Pippa and Gabe has a strange relationship. A interesting read, just had too many questions at the end.

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

Gabe and Pippa move into a cliff side house and soon find out the cliff behind their house is where locals go to end their lives. Gabe talks person after person out of jumping, until one night when a woman jumps. Or did Pippa see Gabe push him?

I loved that the book alternated between Pippa and the woman who dies’ points of view. Almost every chapter ended with a question or desire to learn more. I was in such suspense and loved all the twists (many i I didn’t see coming)! This is a fantastic read for people who like thrillers. One of my favorite reads this year!

Sally Hepworth does it again with The Soulmate! A true cliffhanger (jokes aside) that kept me repeating “just one more page!”
I could not wait to uncover the truth of what really happened on that cliff and along the way was swept away by the unfolding suspense, flawed characters and their hidden secrets.
Gabe and Pippa seemed to have it all figured out and we’re on track for a fresh new life-yet Pippa held deeply rooted doubts about her husband.
Amanda and Max appeared as a typical power couple, yet the reader knew there were deeply rooted secrets.
This multi-layered storyline told from alternating perspectives exposes not only the truth but the resulting fallout.
Full of conflict, unsavory characters, love, betrayal, devotion, secrets, unraveling marriages and suspense-you won’t want to miss this one!

I really enjoyed this story! I went in completely blind and I feel like that added to the suspense even more. This was my first read by Hepworth and I can’t wait to read more! And holy plot twists, they just kept coming. I literally didn’t put this book down, start to finish. The only thing I was 100% happy with was the ending. It wasn’t bad, but I just expected a little… more.

This book is about what people are capable of when they are in love and how that can blind us to really simple truths. It shows domestic and relational toxicity, as well as some aspects of mental illness.

Would recommend to all suspense lovers!

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for a truly spectacular novel. You know it's good when it keeps you up reading, right?
Told from two different viewpoints and in the past and present tense. The storyline grabs hold of your interest and keeps you wanting more and more until the very end. I really like this author! I haven't read a book by this author that didn't keep me guessing.
I have already preordered it for our library.

Definitely do not start this book if you have anything else planned for the day! I finished reading this one in 24 hours because I just couldn’t put it down. It was thrilling, but also a short and easy read.

Gabe and Pippa live in a house beside a cliff known as “the drop”, a popular suicide spot. When they spot a woman on the edge of the cliff, Gabe goes to talk her off the ledge. Pippa looks away briefly, and when she glances back the woman is gone and Gabe has his arms straight out. Of course the woman jumped…. Or did she?

The dual POV of Pippa and the woman on the cliff works so well for this story. It really does keep you entertained until the very end. I have to admit that I did not see the twist coming. The ending surprised me, but also left me just a tad underwhelmed. It was a good book, but I think I just expected a bigger finish. Overall I would recommend this for those who like a quick thriller read!

This was my first Sally Hepworth read and now I'm going to have to read them all!

Dual POV both past and present, I really liked the pacing which kept me turning pages, and the twists!! i read this book in two sittings but it would have been one if i started on a weekend! From the first sentence i was hooked

I can't really talk more about what i love about this book without giving anything away but i would recommend to anyone who enjoys a book that keeps you interested from start to finish.

i received this book as an ARC from Netgalley and i am so glad that I did.

This is the first book I’ve read by Sally Hepworth and it won’t be the last! Excuse me while I go buy all of her other books. The book was a little slow moving for me but it also held my attention the whole time. Pippa and her husband Gabe have two children and appear to have the perfect life, the perfect marriage. But things aren’t always as they seem. What secrets are they hiding from each other? And what will be destroyed by them?

YALL> Sally Hepworth is an auto-buy author for me and she did NOT disappoint! A new favorite and buying a physical copy for sure.

The Soulmate is another fabulous read by Sally Hepworth who consistently and undisputably knocks it out of the park. I was fully absorbed in the lives of these characters from the very first page.

Gabe and Pippa Gerard live in a beautiful clifftop home with their two precious daughters. Time and again, Gabe has taken heroic measures to lure potential jumpers off the edge of the cliff, saving many lives. But on one particular night, the woman with whom he is speaking suddenly plunges over the side. As Pippa watches the shocking scene from the kitchen window, she is unsettled by one specific detail. Why does it appear that Gabe has just pushed the woman to her death?

Full of secrets and shocking twists, the narrative comes to life via the perspectives of two key players, and unfolds with a pacey tension. You will not want to miss this latest offering from the wonderful Sally Hepworth.

Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC.

A thrilling tale of how a family has moved to a cliff-side cottage and realizes that it is a popular jump spot for suicides. The husband has saved about eight people and even has a news article about his heroic efforts. But one day, when his wife sees someone standing by the cliffs and sends him out to do his magic, he fails. What she then sees makes her question who her husband really is.

Well, from where should I start? This was a fabulous read for me. Sally Hepworth has done it again. She's proved that she knows what the audience want from her.
Pippa and Gabe Gerard move into their dream home with their two young daughters. Their home is located on a Cliff side in a coastal town outside Melbourne. The Cliff is famous for suicides. As people appear by the Cliff, Gabe has a gift being able to talk people out of their plan, until one day he cannot save a women. Pippa sees Gabe talking to the women and witnesses his reaction after the fall. Was this an accident or was she pushed?
Her death is ruled a suicide, but it turns out Gave knew the lady. The lady was upset that her husband had cheated. He does not disclose this to the police or Pippa. The husband is also someone Gabe used to work for. This web of deceit runs rampant in their lives and the twists in this novel were fun to try to unravel. Will Pippa, the husband and the police find out the truth of what really happened?
Although I personally think that this character ( Pippa) irritated me a little bit because she's forgiving everything so easily. If I were in place of her then I would have done it differently.
Overall it's a must read and highly recommended from my side.
Thanks to Netgalley and St Martin's Press for giving me an advance copy.

Will Pippa, the husband and the police find out the truth of what really happened? Each of these main characters is trying to unravel the truth, but at what lengths will Pippa go to, to prove Gabe’s innocence or betrayal? Hepworth novels are always a MUST read!
