Oh my goodness. Salley Hepworth's novels just keep getting better and better!! I absolutely loved "The Soulmate". An excellent cast of characters, great depiction of mental health, much mystery uncovered in a masterful manner, with an unexpected web of "coincidences". Relatable, exciting, and lovable. Just amazing. Thank you NetGalley, the author and publisher for the early reader edition. All opinions are my own.
Pippa and Gabe, along with their two little girls have moved to their dream home. Unbeknownst to them is that the property has a reputation for people jumping to their deaths. Somehow, Gabe has always been able to talk them out of it while Pippa calls the authorities. But not this time. As Pippa goes over it in her mind, something just seems a bit off, but she can’t put her finger on it. She later finds out that the woman is the wife of Gabe’s former boss. The story is told by multiple narrators, and the women go back and forth from then to now. It’s a little confusing but all makes sense in the end. I missed some of the breadcrumbs the author dropped but the ending blew me away.

In sickness and in health……
What a page turner!! Wow! Domestic suspense at its finest right here! Told from 4 perspectives (2 couples) and the before and after of the….”event”…this book will have you mesmerized! Pippa and Gabe live off a cliff with their young daughters and Gabe is recognized in the newspaper for talking suicidal people off of the ledge. A woman shows up one evening and what Pippa sees is alarming. Does Gabe know her? What just happened? As the plot thickens and the secrets pile on the reader is left to question, “who can I trust here?”
A dramatic ending that you won’t see coming is mounting and there’s no going back! Buckle up for twists, turns, and the shock of a lifetime!
April is here, and with the new month comes a string of new releases that I've been eager to read. First up is a new thriller from another new to me author Sally Hepworth. I've made it a goal to read titles from authors who I've heard of but have never read, and Hepworth certainly fits that bill. I've been tangentially aware of her writing for several years. Many of my reading friends have praised her standalone thrillers. When her publisher offered me a copy of her latest book via ebook and audio, I jumped at the chance to read it. The Soulmate proves why so many other readers adore Hepworth's writing and has turned me into a fan of her works too.
It was their dream home. Gabe and Pippa Gerard had built a beautiful life together, and this was the place they would live out the remainder of their days. The house was large enough to hold their growing family for years. The Melbourne estate sat atop a seaside cliff overlooking the waves crashing against sharp rocks below, the peaceful sound of breaking waves filling the air of the entire property. Yes, this was the perfect place to call home. The cliffs bringing such peace to the Gerard family bring something much darker to others. This dark proclivity would soon begin to unravel their dream.
Besides being known as their dream home, the cliffs on the edge of their property are also known as "The Drop". This steep bluff overlooking jagged rocks below has become a well-known location for people to commit suicide, a place to quickly end their troubled lives. Since moving in, Pippa and Gabe have encountered seven individuals who are ready to end it all. When the couple notices another woman approaching the edge of the rockface, Pippa is concerned but not worried. Surely Gabe will be able to sort this one out too. She watches from afar as Gabe approaches the woman and begins speaking to her. Pippa looks away for only a moment but is shocked when her gaze returns to the scene. Gabe stands at "The Drop", arms outstretched in front of him, and the woman is nowhere to be seen. Is the woman's fall simply a tragic accident, or is something more nefarious at play?
I was immediately consumed by the premise of Sally Hepworth's The Soulmate. Hepworth employs shifting perspectives including the POV of the deceased woman who is stuck in a kind of purgatory watching the events unfold. This tactic can be hit or miss in thrillers like this one, but I found it to really help add to the suspense and sense of paranoia that fills the novel. Barrie Krienik and Jessica Douglas-Henry give voice to these characters in the audio version of the book, and I found their narration to really ground the story in authenticity, even as certain plot points became a bit far-fetched. The Soulmate is a popcorn thriller at its best. Family secrets, tension, and plenty of twists keep the pages turning and had me thoroughly engrossed in the story. This was my first read by Hepworth, but it certainly won't be my last.
Between this book and Hello Beautiful, that’s a lot of partner with mental health issues books for me lately.
The Soulmate is Sally Hepworth’s latest domestic thriller. It was a really quick fast-paced read and has two interesting POVs from different timelines to connect the dots.
I wasn’t sure how I felt throughout the book because at times I kind of just wanna shake FMC you know? I do like the ending though, not perfect but made sense to me.
Welp I’m a Sally Hepworth addict!
Gabe and Pippa dream of costal living and they’ve found it in a cottage on the cliffs. A place where they can raise their children. But this house isn’t something magical as they think.. it harbors something sinister. The cliffs, as beautiful as they are, are actually the place people go to end their lives. And night after night, Gabe is out there trying to save them. Until one, who happens to know Gabe, isn’t saved Pippa questions his motive.
We go back and forth between Pippa and Amanda, the women Gabe didn’t save, to see what lead up to her death and Pippa’s life. Secrets in a marriage are deadly. And this book delivers that. When you think you know who you married but really you have no clue at all. Seeing how Amanda and Pippa are also connected was like BAM.
I really love the stories Sally weaves. I never can see the plot twist coming and that’s what I need when reading a mystery.
Disclaimer... I fell in love with the cover
before the plot 🙊
This cover drew me in and I just had to know what it
was about. I think I was adding it to my NetGalley shelf
before I even read the synopsis if i'm being honest 😅
However, the synopsis is just as intriguing:
There’s a cottage on a cliff. Gabe and Pippa’s dream
home in a sleepy coastal town. But their perfect house
hides something sinister. The tall cliffs have become a
popular spot for people to end their lives. Night after
night Gabe comes to their rescue, literally talking them
off the ledge. Until he doesn’t.
When Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim, the
questions spiral...Did the victim jump? Was she
pushed? And would Gabe, the love of Pippa’s life, her
soulmate...lie? As the perfect facade of their marriage
begins to crack, the deepest and darkest secrets begin
to unravel.
This story had me completely hooked from the
beginning! The opening scene was mysterious and
daunting - the whole book was hard to put down after
that. If you are up for a dark and dreary thriller, this one
just might be your book of the season.
Trigger warnings: Suicide, Mental illness
This is my second Sally Hepworth book and I can officially admit that I'm a fan. The Soulmate starts off strong and doesn't let up until the very end. Hepworth's writing and pacing keeps my interest the whole time, revealing pertinent information at precisely the right moment. It's a quick and engrossing read, and in fact helped pull me out of a recent reading slump.
A big thanks to NetGalley for an Advance copy of this book.
Told in alternating chapters of them and now. Pippa and Gabe live in a beautiful house on a cliff. What they didn’t know when buying the house was that cliff is a common spot for jumpers. Gave has managed to talk many jumpers off the edge (literally) until one night. But was he just unsuccessful or did he push her?
The twists and turns are clever. This is a fun book with well developed characters.
The Soulmate is the second book I've read by Sally Hepworth and definitely my favourite of the two. This book was so easy to read and hooked me right from the beginning. I was engaged the whole way through thanks to super short chapters which I loved, dual POVs (with one being pretty unique that was so interesting to the story) and past & present timelines. There was an eerie, atmospheric setting to the book (another thing I love in books!) as Pippa and Gabe live in a nice house on the edge of a cliff, known as The Drop, which is a known spot where people go to end their lives. This domestic thriller was full of suspense and touches on love, marriage, secrets and of course murder. I did not expect it to make me feel (or think!) as much as it did, especially towards the end. I loved that there were twists and turns all along the way, most of which I didn't see coming at all and I was happy with how things wrapped up.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one and rated it 4 to 4.5 stars! This one is one of my favourite thrillers I've read so far this year. If you are looking for a domestic thriller that is full of suspense with dual POV, past and present timelines and an atmospheric setting, check out The Soulmate (out now!). I'm looking forward to reading more of Hepworth's backlist.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
I had quite a ride with this one. It took me considerably a bit longer to read this than other books. I was totally into it until I wasn’t. I felt like the main character Pippa, was very in denial of what was happening with Gabe. He was very unlikable. The plot was good and had the making a of a good story. It just felt flat to me. However, I will be reading more of SH’s work. .
Wow! This book brought the completely u expected! I absolutely loved the story of a marriage— the ebbs and flows and highs and lows- anyone married can connect with! What I did not see coming was the twist, the breakdown, the crime!
I loved the beautiful setting of this book! The ending, aside from one detail, was ideal in my opinion.
This is another great book by Sally Hepworth!
Pippa and Gabe live in a beautiful cottage perched on a tall cliff. It is picture perfect except it is a popular place for people to commit suicide. Gabe has become their protector though, talking and saving people who want to jump. That is until one day Gabe wasn’t able to save a women who came to commit suicide. Soon things start to spiral and Pippa finds out that Gabe knew the women. Is Gabe really the man she fell in love with? Is there such a thing as a soulmate?
This domestic thriller was a roller coaster ride and had a few twists that had me rereading passages so I could make sure what I was reading was correct. I love Sally Hepworth and will continue reading all her books, she never disappoints.
Sally Hepworth does not disappoint! She reveals details slowly throughout the story and completely pulls you in. I could not put this down and read it in a day!
In this psychological thriller, Pippa and Gabe move into their dream house. Everything looks perfect on the outside -- the perfect family, the perfect marriage and children. Gabe is a stay at home dad and Pippa works outside the home as an attorney.
It turns out their dream house is near a cliff "The Spot" where many have ended their lives. When Gabe talks someone down from the cliff, he ends up watching and saving others and becomes a town hero. It all comes into question when he's unable to save one of the jumpers, and Pippa begins to question what she saw that day.
There are plenty of twists and turns and lots of secrets in this story to keep the pages turning. I liked some of them, and others had me scratching my head. This is very much about the characters, and I have mixed feelings about these two. The pace of this book was made for a quick read, which I did like.
The Soulmate is told in dual POV -- Pippa's and the dead woman with a now and then timeline. It takes some pages for all the pieces to come into place in this story and you'll have to read to the very end for all the answers. Mental health is a prominent topic. But I found it mostly to be a story that questions fidelity and honesty and denial in a marriage. What does it mean to be a soulmate?
I enjoyed this thriller and am looking for future titles from this author.

This is a story about marriage, betrayal, and the secrets that push us to the edge. There’s a cottage on a cliff. Gabe and Pippa’s dream home in a sleepy coastal town. The tall cliffs have become a popular spot for people to end their lives. When Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim, the questions spiral...Did the victim jump? Was she pushed? And would Gabe, the love of Pippa’s life, her soulmate...lie? As the perfect facade of their marriage begins to crack, the deepest and darkest secrets begin to unravel. This is a fast-paced entertaining novel with twists and turns that kept me reading to the very ending. It is a character-driven book with alternating chapters with POV from Pippa and Amanda. I like Hepworth's writing and would definitely read another book by her. If you like intriguing domestic thrillers then you would love this book. I would like to thank NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for a copy for an honest review.
Alright y’all, I loved this one! I find it incredibly hard to read books without audio these days, but this arc sucked me right in and I finished in a day. It was so good! One of the most satisfying endings of a book I’ve ever read - truly a work of art.
If you like domestic suspense, you should pick this one up immediately. The pacing was excellent and kept me reading way past my bedtime 😅
Sally Hepworth always has a way of drawing me in! This domestic thriller was no exception. I binged this in a single afternoon because I could not put it down. She kept me guessing and I certainly could not predict the various twists and turns. The characters were interesting and unique. I was constantly going back and forth on how I felt about them as people. Definitely a gripping read!
Another gripping read from Sally Hepworth. I loved the twists and turns in this story and also loved that one of the POV's in the book is told by someone who has died. I thought that was very unique and well done. This thriller was quite the page turner. Sally Hepworth has yet to disappoint.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the review copy.
I read this in 4 hours…..that’s how invested I was with this story. Told in 2 pov’s and then/now scenes. It was fast paced, I was so intrigued by what the final was going to be that I never put the book down. There were a couple twists that I didn’t see coming & the story was engaging.
