The Soulmate's setting of Portsea, a coastal Australian town, is one of beauty but also danger and death. Pippa and her husband, Gabe, live in a cliffside house on the tip if Mornington Peninsula. Unfortunately, several people have jumped to their deaths off of the steep cliffs.

Hepworth's suspenseful plot opens with yet another death off of the cliffs, with twists and turns slowly revealing the circumstances and reason. The points of view of Pippa, as well as the dead woman, Amanda, are given in alternating timelines of past and present. Full of secrets, love, and domestic drama, this book sensitively covers the bonds of two marriages and the difficult topic of mental illness.

Hepworth knows how to keep me glued to a story, with tension building in slow burn style throughout.
The cliffside scenes were atmospheric and chilling. After reading two of Hepworth's books, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her to fans of mystery and thrills.

Thank you to Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for an advance reader's copy of this book. My review is my own.

I’m not going to lie. I was really disappointed in Sally Hepworth’s last book, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘪𝘧𝘦, but I’m happy to say she has redeemed herself with 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗘. While last year’s domestic thriller had a lot of victim blaming and gaslighting of its female characters, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 has plenty of blame to go around in the crumbling marriage of Pippa and Gabe.⁣⁣
The story opens as they both witness a suicide off the cliff near their backyard. Tragedy becomes more complicated when the two discover the victim was a woman known to them both. And, that’s only the start of the secrets they keep. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Like most of Hepworth's books, I listened to this one on audio. As always, the narration by Barrie Kreinik and Jessica Douglas-Henry was excellent. They were so easy to listen to and really brought the story to life even the parts that were a little eye-roll-worthy. Yes, there were some, especially around some of Pippa’s choices, but then isn’t that what we expect in a domestic thriller? If all the characters were perfectly logical, where would be the fun in that? 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦 was a fun book, one that would be a perfect beach bag read…or listen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⁣⁣

Gabe spends night after night talking strangers off the edge, until one night. When Pippa learns that Gabe knew the victim, she starts to wonder whether the victim jumped on her own or if she was pushed. Now Pippa is stuck wondering whether her soulmate would lie. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC! I’ve loved all the stories by Sally Hepworth that I’ve read so far and was looking forward to this one. The premise here centers around Pippa and Gabe, a couple who live with their two children near a well known suicide spot. Gabe has acquired somewhat of a hero status due to his efforts in talking people down from the spot. However, one day, a person still jumps despite his efforts. It looks like things are not what they seem. The book is told from the POVs of Pippa and the victim, and jumps seamlessly between the past and present. What I really liked was that I could not tell what direction the story was going in - I had to keep reading to find out more. You slowly learn about the main characters’ pasts - there’s also a few misdirections! However, the ending seemed a let down after the build up. The other thing was that none of the characters were really that likeable, so you’re not that bothered about their fates.
Overall, a fast, twisty read and one to get you out of a reading slump!

To be totally honest, I was expecting a better twist for this one. Sally Hepworth novels are often ones with a shocking turn at the very end. And while this one has one, I found that it just didn’t catch my interest and wasn’t that surprising to me. The writing is as usual excellent from this author, and the story is a slow burn. While this book didn’t totally engross me like I was expecting, this book is still worth the read/listen for other Sally Hepworth fans!

A big thank you to NetGalley, St Martin’s Press, and Sally Hepworth for providing me with this gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.

The Soulmate is an easy to read story and the short chapters made it easy to read just one more chapter. The Soulmate hooks you from the beginning and keeps your interest throughout the entire story.
Another great read from Sally Hepworth!

This is a captivating novel that delves into the complexities of marriage, betrayal, and the secrets that can tear us apart. With a stunning setting on a cliffside cottage in a sleepy coastal town, Sally Hepworth weaves a tale that is both engaging and sinister.

The story centers around Pippa and Gabe, whose dream home hides a dark secret. The cliffs around their home have become a popular spot for people to end their lives, and Gabe has been the one to talk them off the ledge. But when one victim is someone he knew, Pippa begins to question everything. Was the victim pushed, or did she jump? And is Gabe, the love of her life and soulmate, lying to her? I was hooked from the first chapter, and the book just kept getting better after.

The novel is written in alternating perspectives, and each chapter provides a deeper understanding of the characters and their motivations. The story moves at a steady pace, with the tension building as the secrets unravel. Hepworth expertly crafts a tale that keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end. I must say that this author has become one of my favorite thriller authors, and she delivers every single time. The Soulmate might be my favorite book by her as of now.

The characters are well-developed, flawed, and relatable. Pippa is a strong and independent woman who is forced to confront her own beliefs about her marriage and herself. Gabe is a complicated character, and his actions and motivations are revealed gradually, adding to the suspense and intrigue of the story. I truly enjoyed how Hepworth delves into Gabe's mental health history which explains so many of his behaviors. I also thought it was very clever to add the POV of the victim although I was a little bit confused about the perspective at first. It only becomes clear after a few chapters in that she is narrating the present events so I was somewhat confused at first.

Overall, The Soulmate is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that will keep readers guessing until the very end. With beautiful prose, complex characters, and a stunning setting, Sally Hepworth has created a masterpiece that is not to be missed. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a gripping, character-driven story with a touch of mystery and suspense.

The story hooked me in the beginning, but lost steam. I was expecting more plot and twists. Not a bad read, but not the best. It had potential!

Wow. This book had me hooked right from the beginning. Unfortunately, it didn't keep me hooked, but I still really enjoyed it. The short chapters kept it moving right along. I do like how things were wrapped up at the very end.

Two marriages intertwined by secrets and mysteries, how well do you really know your one and only - your soulmate ? A house on the cliffs with the most beautiful view but also at times people who need to be talked down off the cliffs - is it worth living there, right on the edge ?
This book had me sitting on the edge of my seat flipping the pages because the story told was so twisty and wild I just had to get to the bottom of things as quickly as possible ! I can’t really say more without spoiling the fun - so I’ll stop right here with Sally Hepworth is always the right choice if you are looking for a thriller that captivates your attention and distracts you and entertains you the way only a good thriller can !

Another twisty thriller from Sally Hepworth.

Gabe and Pippa have just moved to a new house near the ocean. The only concern with the house is that it is a popular place for people to go when they want to end their lives. Gabe talks to the distraught people and has prevented several attempts at taking their lives until one night it doesn't work as planned.

Amanda's father was not faithful to her mother and she has lasting trauma from her childhood and what that did to her mother. Amanda's mother passes away before she gets married. Amanda marries Max and is very clear that the most important thing of their marriage is that Max remains faithful always.

Max is a CEO of several ventures and struggles to get funding. He has to use some shady sources. Gabe is hired as one of Max's people and quickly moves up the ranks to be making good money. Suddenly Gabe is fired after things go wrong.

Pippa tries to help fix Gabe's mistake and gets them both entangled in a bigger mess.

The twist at the end was a bit out of left field, but tied all the people together in the end of the book.

Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book.

3.5 Stars

I was a little hesitant to read The Soulmate as my first book by Hepworth was only okay. However, I found this domestic thriller/suspense kept me glue to the pages. It reminded me of B.A. Paris novel, where the suspense is there in the form of family secrets slowly unraveling.

Told in alternate point of views of Pippa, the wife of Gabe (who helps talks people off the literal ledge of a cliff near their house), and Amanda, someone with a connection to Gabe’s past and who unfortunately jumps off the cliff as Gabe says he couldn’t save her. But questions surrounding Amanda’s suicide begin to bubble to the surface as Pippa examines her life with Gabe and Amanda tells her story from beyond.

The nonlinear time line worked well here and kept me engaged in the story. I figured out early on about Gabe (that he was bipolar) but other twists I didn’t see coming until they appeared.

I received an advanced copy through Netgalley in return for an honest review.

4⭐️ Thank you St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read and review an ARC of The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth. I really wanted to like Pippa but she was the most gaslit character who I have ever read about. Time and time again, it was so obvious that Gabe was using her empathy and sympathy for him, against her and for his own means. I never understood how such a smart person as Pippa could see something and then quickly twist it to then be in his favor. And constant disappointments that she suffered at his expense were just baffling. I so liked Max and Amanda and their relationship. It was far from perfect, but they crafted one that almost worked for them. I was so sorry that they didn’t realize/acknowledge/verbalize how much they not only respected each other, bust truly loved each other. I didn’t see the ending coming, even as i was putting the threads together. I have to say though that my favorite people were Asha and Freya.

No one does suburban domestic life like Sally Hepworth does. This was the fourth book I have read by her, and it is in my top two! Her twists are never huge, but are very effective and unsettling because of how plausible they feel, the stories feel like they could happen to someone you know. As always, I enjoyed the tidbits of Australian culture like TimTams - they feel like easter eggs to keep my eyes open for while reading. I look forward to continuing to read Sally Hepworth's new releases!

I was disappointed by this book. I appreciated the alternating POVs but I couldn’t understand how or why we got Amanda’s. Additionally, Pippa’s blind faith was difficult as well. However, if we had a great reveal at the end, I probably would have been able to overlook things. But I don’t feel like there really was a reveal whatsoever and the parentage did not really have any implication on the plot. I don’t know. it was a fine read but not my favorite thriller and I was able to put the book down, which is something I don’t want to be able to do when reading a thriller.

Holy cats and dogs. This book was a page turning, nail biter. I flew through this in just a few sittings.. finding myself unable to put it down at night, falling asleep mid sentence.

Between Pippa & Gabe and Amanda & Max I absolutely loved to hate these characters. You feel like you might love them at first but as the story progresses and their flaws are revealed, secrets leaked AND kept, lies told to keep those safe and hurt others all at the same time. I said what I said, I loved hating these main characters.

And just when I thought I’d figured out the story, a new twist is thrown in every 20-30 pages, making me sink deeper and deeper into the waters of The Soulmate.

I loved this!!
This one will not disappoint. It is filled with twists and turns that you wont see coming. My favorite part was Amanda's point of view such a great way to tell her story.

I highly recommend if you love domestic thrillers.
