For those who are HUGE fans of books by Sally Hepworth, this one is the best so far! An absolute white-knuckle read. The opening scene was very tense, and set the expectations for the story. Right away, I was gripped with fear, failure and needed to see caring Gabe find redemption. He’s been successful so far in preventing the horrific….but things have changed….
This is not your typical domestic thriller, but something that’s fearfully unique - a house built near a cliff where people commit suicide…or are pushed off. Not only is the location perilous, so are the dynamics between Gabe/Pippa, and Amanda/Max. I felt uncomfortable, horrified and felt as if I was watching a train wreck as the story progressed. And I, of course, could not stop eating popcorn and WATCHING. Told from multiple POVs and timelines, I did have to keep close track of “who & when” I was reading.
Mental health was a prevalent theme, as was the family dynamics. Just when I thought I had the plot figured out - nope, I was wrong. I enjoyed being surprised multiple times and read this in two sittings.
Recommended for book clubs and fans of domestic suspense - and you will never look at a cliff the same way again.
Thank you to ST. Martin’s Press via NetGalley for this wild ride! I read this voluntarily and all opinions are 100% my own. Even educators need a great story to decompress with from time to time, and this was my fun read this month!
I find that I have mixed feelings about this one. I have been sitting and ruminating on my thoughts for a while and still feel unsure. I thought it was a good and interesting topic. It was a unique idea for a book and it was a very fast read! I liked the different timelines and dual narrators, and that the story wasn’t just told in a straightforward manner.
My problems come in with a dislike for Pippa. It felt like she just stayed with Gabe because he was good in bed. Also, why would her family just come alongside her and not try to get her to see how toxic her relationship was if they were so worried about her. Also, the whole stinking plot was down to the fact of a lie. If there is one plot point that annoys me it’s miscommunication. Seriously, just talk!!! I get a little miscommunication but the entire plot hanging on this one lie just irks me.
Thanks to NetGalley and St Martins Press for an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC of The Soulmate.
The book started off slow for me. About half way through I really started to get into it and couldn't put it down. Some of the ending you could see coming and some of it was a complete surprise.
I didn't like some of the choices that Hepworth made. One I thought was risky and didn't pay off, for me. I didn't like the miscommunication and pettiness of some of the character's choices. It just seemed dumb and implausible that someone would act that way? I think the cover is gorgeous! But I just didn't care for the characters' motivations. It's not a bad book. Three is average, fine, okay. And that's how I feel about it. I've enjoyed some of her other books more!
Gripping. Atmospheric. A perfect domestic thriller with an interesting twist! I loved how this was told through shifting timelines and POVs. It gave elements of suspense as information was revealed bit by bit from each side.
When a woman who you once knew shows up with incriminating evidence against her husband and your wife, and you’re at a place known as The Drop, where people take their own lives… if she suddenly dropped would anyone question whether it was suicide or not? Maybe if her identity stayed hidden the unravelling of secrets would stop… but the trouble with unravelling is that it usually doesn’t stop until the end.
Sally Hepworth has been on my "to-read" list for years, and I'm glad I finally picked up one of her books!
In The Soulmate, we meet two couples whose lives become irrevocably entwined after a suicide... or was it murder? The story jumps back and forth in time and is narrated by the two female characters. Slowly, as the pieces from the past are revealed and put together like a puzzle, the whole story comes to light... and it's a wild one!
This was definitely one of those "hard to put down" thrillers. It moved at a very quick pace from start to finish, while also still managing to develop each of the characters in depth. I find that some thrillers have pretty shallow characters, focusing only on the action, but this book does both. I got a real sense of all the involved parties, which made me much more invested in the story. There is a lot going on... mental illness, betrayals, lies, murder, corruption... but all of these things tie together to tell the whole story. It feels intricately wound, but each piece is important. Each piece makes sense in the grand scheme of it all.
The whole book was surprising and also written very cleverly. I don't always like dual timelines and narration, but in this case, it works miraculously well. I was always racing to the next narrator, to the next flashback in time, to see the trail of breadcrumbs that finally all added up at the end.
I'd highly recommend this one to all fans of thrillers. It'll keep you guessing pretty much until the very end. I look forward to reading much more from Sally Hepworth.
Sally Hepworth strikes again. I am a big fan of Sally's work. She writes domestic and psychological thrillers so well.
In this novel, we meet Gabe & Pippa who live in a small town, near some cliffs that have become a known spot for suicide jumpers. Gabe has been known to go out and talk people off of the ledge numerous times, until the time when he is not successful. Then we learn that Gabe knew the jumper and the circumstances are fishy. The situation exposes some cracks in Gabe & Pippa's relationship, some secrets and some lies.
Highly addictive novel by Sally Hepworth.
This was my first by Sally Hepworth and won't be the last! Grips you from the first chapter and never lets you go! I loved the dual PV, short chapters and the twists to keep me guessing! I highly recommend picking this one up, but be warned, you won't be able to put it down until you finish it!
The Soulmate tells the story of Gabe and Pippa's dream house at the top of a tall cliff on the coast. Gabe has developed a reputation of being able to talk people looking to end their lives off the ledge, until one individual actually jumps. Or was she pushed by Gabe?
After it is discovered that Gabe actually knew the victim, The Soulmate explores the backstory of the victim and the history of Gabe and Pippa's marriage. Secrets are unveiled and the "perfect marriage" begins to unravel.
The Soulmate is my favorite thriller that I have read so far this year! I was immediately sucked into the story and quickly made my way through the book excited to see what happens next. This was my fourth read from Sally Hepworth and my favorite yet. Be sure to pick up The Soulmate when it hits bookshelves on April 4, 2023.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for this e-ARC copy in exchange for my review.
This was my first Sally Hepworth novel and I really enjoyed it!
We follow a young married couple, Gabe and Pippa, who have had their share of ups and downs. Looking for a fresh start, they purchase a house that overlooks a cliff locally known as "The Drop". The cliff is a popular spot for those looking to end their lives. Gabe has successfully deterred many from choosing that path, but one day, he is not able to convince a woman that life is worth living. Or this is what he says.
What follows is a story with many twists and turns, taking us back and forth between past and present. I loved how everything was weaved together, and I enjoyed the point of view from the recently deceased woman told from beyond. Even when I thought I had things figured out, I was still surprised at the end!
This is a perfect read to pick up on a dark and stormy night!
I love Sally Hepworth- she is always a MUST read for me. This book was so perfect. Throughout the whole thing you are wondering who you can trust and what will happen next as is so common in her books! I loved this one!
This was my first Sally Hepworth but it will not be my last!
We have two of my favorite things in this book - a non-linear timeline and multiple POVs. There was mental health representation which I appreciated!
I found the POV of Amanda (who is dead) to be so clever - and she was actually my favorite character.
The author had me guessing the whole time - she expertly spun a web and I could not figure out where we were going. And in the end everything was wrapped up well with no loose ends.
Highly recommend if you are looking for a good mystery.
For starters, I absolutely love sally hepworths writing. She creates relatable characters and situations that aren't so over the top, that the plot becomes unbelievable.
For a book so short, for some reason it still took me 7 days to finish. I love a good short chapter, but these were so short, I found myself disconnected from the timelines, though if I had a few hours to sit and read at once, I could absolutely see this as a book someone could easily binge in one sitting. It's just not one you want to continuously have to put down.
Also for such a short book, there was a LOT going on, so it was never slow. I definitely never had a bored moment reading it.
I loved the multi-narrator factor in this book, and I think that Hepworth did a fairly great job of revealing each plot twist and turn in a way that kept me guessing. Ultimately, the payoff felt a little bit anticlimactic, as I felt that there had been breadcrumbs dropped along the way that added up to more than what was given to us as a denouement, but this was a riveting, fun read, nonetheless!
The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth is a fantastical domestic thriller. It starts out with a bang and ends in fireworks. The plot twists were shocking and in true Sally Hepworth fashion, unpredictable.
The story was told from alternating POVs and timelines. The really interesting thing was that one of the main characters was dead and the other was living. I’ve never read a book where one of the central characters was dead and I thought it worked well. Even though one central character was alive and one was dead, transitions between POVs flowed seamlessly and made sense.
Thank you so much to St. Martin’s Press, NetGalley and Sally Hepworth for my electronic advanced copy of The Soulmate. I absolutely loved it.
Publish date: April 4th 2023.
Sally Hepworth is one of my auto-buy authors, and this book just further cemented this fact. It follows the story of Gabe and Pippa and their life living near a dangerous cliff. However, early on, it's easy to see that not everything is as great as it seems. Hepworth expertly weaves a tale that had me questioning characters, motives, and wondering how everything would play out. I was hooked from the beginning and had to keep reading until I knew how it ended. If you need a quick-paced thriller, I definitely recommend this one!
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the e-ARC of this book.
love Sally Hepworth. That is all.
Jk. But, it’s true!! Her books all keep me so engaged - I just can’t stop reading! Also, she is a big one in my “thriller starter kit”. Perfect books for people dabbling in the genre because they aren’t at all scary.
•She does a great job in this book of making you feel like you’re right in the setting - very atmospheric. You think you’d want to live here, but quickly realize - no thanks!
•I went round and round with the main characters: loved them, hated them, felt sad for them, an odd satisfaction for them …
•It has very interesting dual POV and dual timelines. I wasn’t sure what to think of that at first, but actually it was so unique and made the big reveal come together in a cool way.
•There were twists and surprises until the very end!
Pippa and Gabe, along with their two young girls moved into a cliff side home a year ago. They were unaware at the time of purchase that the cliff was notorious for being a spot for troubled people to take their lives. Gabe has become somewhat of a local hero due to the number of people he has talked out of jumping. Until one time he is unable to save someone.
When Pippa discovers that Gabe knew the woman who jumped, she begins to have questions.
Told in multiple timelines and viewpoints. I really liked the addition of Amanda's post death point of view.
As the past and present are revealed, I just became more interested and invested in the story.
Another great read from Hepworth! I can't wait for the next one.
Thanks to netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the arc.
Pippa's husband Gabe has saved countless people from jumping off the cliff next to their house. But this last time, the woman died. After finding out Gabe knew this woman before she showed up on the cliff, Pippa has questions. This book was one heck of a wild ride. I like books that shock you, and this book kept throwing curve balls, until the very end. I did find it sad that Pippa had to deal with so much from Gabe, and I understood her family's frustrations. I read this book in one sitting, and I was sad when it was over. Thanks to Netgalley for the free copy in exchange for an unbiased review.
I thoroughly enjoyed Sally Hepworth's "The Soulmate." I find that many mysteries and thrillers feel redundant, and everything about this novel felt fresh and intriguing. "The Soulmate" was perfectly paced, as details were uncovered exactly when needed, and it never felt like Hepworth was playing games with the reader by holding back necessary information.
I've read a lot of lackluster mysteries - but this one was a truly engaging standout.
