Sally Hepworth, the author of “The Good Sister and “The Younger Wife” entertains us once more with a new thriller set in a coastal town near Melbourne. Gabe and Pippa have bought a house on the cliffs that’s everything they love. But they learn after moving in that the cliff nearest their home has become notorious for suicides. Gabe makes it his life’s purpose to go talk to these people and save them from themselves. But one afternoon, while Pippa is watching out the window, Gabe fails. The young woman goes over the edge. The police are called, and the lies start immediately. Pippa becomes convinced that Gabe had a role in this suicide when it comes to light that he knew the victim. In fact, he had worked for the victim’s husband.
Here, as they say, is where the plot thickens. You have a gorgeous young couple living in a quaint cottage by the sea, throw in two adorable children who may or may not be used for leverage, spice up it with a bit of infidelity and dirty money, then sprinkle a small amount of mental illness on top. Voila! Another superb novel by the master of thrillers. Plan to read the whole book once you start, it’s that addictive.
Thanks to St. Martin’s Press for an ARC in exchange for my honest review. The publishing date is April 4, 2023.
This was a stellar thriller!!! I loved every second of it! I had to keep telling myself to put the book down and feed your family or finish the laundry.
I didn't like this book as much as I thought it would. I may have set very high standards but the big wow factor just never came for me. I was waiting for a big exciting O M G twist and you know the story just kind of played out.
With that being said this is still a great read, just a little slower than I thought it would be. I am still not sure how i like the ending but it followed the soulmate theme right to the last jump!
Also shows you how much impact a seemingly innocent lie can have!
Friends don't cheat and don't lie! Also know your worth!! The main character took awhile to find hers!
Thank you for approving me for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I found this story engaging & unique throughout the story i loved how the chapters alternated perspectives & switched timelines.
I was a bit underwhelmed with the ending but i think if ur looking for a quick domestic thriller u would probably like this one.
This was an entertaining thriller and I really enjoyed it. It was full of twisty turns and was a fast paced book. I would recommend for fans of thrillers.
Pippa and Gabe have moved with their two young children to a house on the coast - a beautiful spot overlooking a cliff to the ocean. Its isn't long after they move in that they realize that the spot, known as "the Drop", is a place that people come to commit suicide.
Gabe finds he has an ability to talk to the people who arrive to end their lives and is able to persuade them not to jump. He's hailed as a local hero as he rescues one after another.
Then comes the day that a woman arrives, and after Gabe talks to her all day, she jumps. Only, what Pippa saw out of her window, doesn't quite match the story that Gabe tells the police. Was there something else going on? When it is revealed that the woman who jumped was the wife of a man that Pippa had an affair with, Pippa really starts to question what she saw, and what Gabe is involved with.
Told from 4 different angles: Pippa's story from earlier in their marriage, and Pippa's story in the present, along with two timelines from the woman who jumped - the before and after stories, this was an engaging book full of twists and turns. The four POV's worked. Each felt distinct and I wasn't confused as to where we were in the plot. Mental illness, family dysfunction, suicide ae all dealt with. Several big twists were a real surprise to me.
A great read.
This one started off SO strong. I was invested after the first chapter and with the short chapters, I couldn't help but keep reading. I ended up binging this one in two sittings. There were a couple times I found myself having to go back to check what time point we were in and who's POV it was, but overall I think the author did a good job of helping to keep the reader on track. Things started to slow down in the second half of the book and the twist seemed somewhat underwhelming.
Gabe and Pippa move to a new house on the ocean and next to their house is a cliff that multiple people tend to take their lives on. Gabe goes to try and stop another person from jumping as he usually does, but things start to go wrong and secrets start to come out. There were some parts that I felt could have been skipped or just threw the story off a bit.
This is actually my first book by Sally Hepworth and I would pick up another! Overall, I'd give this one between 3.5-4 stars.
“Get ready for a thrilling, addictive novel about marriage, betrayal and the secrets that push us to the edge.”
And you certainly get all that in The Soulmate! Although I wouldn’t necessarily classify this as a thriller but more of a domestic suspense, there were a lot of different elements to balance out this story. I love family dramas and when you get the secrets as well as a mysterious death, I’m there for it. While I Ioved the dual POV’s, alternate time lines and some decent twists, I would have liked a bit more from the ending. But overall, a really enjoyable and entertaining read.
Another great read from Sally Hepworth! I loved this fast paced thriller and all of the characters. Sally is really great at writing characters that feel real and unique. I loved this book so much that I have bought a physical copy for my shelf and I will be recommending it to friends.
I have only read one Hepworth book so far (The Mother-In-Law), but was excited to get a chance to read this.
This was a solid 4 star book in my opinion. I loved the different POVS, and how it flipped between now and then. I loved the surprises and twists and many times I had to stop and say, "wait, what?????" because I didn't see that twist coming! Hepworth definitely paints a picture and then completely changes your view of the whole picture as you read. I started the book and thought that I knew exactly where it was going, but the ending proved me wrong.!
✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨
The Soulmate by @sallyhepworth
This one was addicting! I read it in a day - the chapters are short and pull you in immediately. I loved the different POVs and I loved the setting!
I think Sally is one of the best at writing characters with great depth and I feel like I’m always wondering who I can and cannot trust. The Soulmate was no different and it was definitely fueled by deep character development and some sinister things going on.
I loved the twist and felt like everything tied together really well. I was not expecting the ending!!
Read if you’re looking for:
-flawed characters
-short binge-worthy chapters
-mental health representation
-marriage themes
-coastal, cliff rock setting
-dark & twisty
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
This one’s out April 4th and I highly recommend picking it up! Sally Hepworth is definitely an auto-buy author for me and this one did not disappoint. Thank you to @stmartinspress & @netgalley for the early copy — all opinions are my own!
Another total winner by Sally Hepworth! I loved the dual POV and dual timeline in this book. I thought it was so action-packed, but not in an overwhelming way. The writing was quick and the characters had a great depth to them. I'll definitely be recommending this one.
Gabe and Pippa had a whirlwind romance. But after a few bumps during their marriage, they end up moving away to a sleepy coastal town. Unfortunately their property has a cliff in the backyard that is a well known suicide spot. Over the years, Gabe has become a bit of a legend for talking people out of taking their lives. When a woman appears on their cliff, it is the first time since living there that Gabe wasn’t able to be persuasive enough with his gift. The police start an investigation into this suicide. It turns out that it wasn’t just a random woman and that Gabe has more to hide than he’s leading on. Pippa has always stood by Gabe’s side through the good and the bad. Will these new insights be her breaking point?
This has been my favorite Sally Hepworth book so far. The story was intriguing and heartbreaking at the same time. I liked that the point of view changed between Pippa and Amanda. I especially liked that Amanda got to see everything play out after her death and we were able to hear her insight and revelations after the fact. It was interesting to get more intel into how mental illnesses manifest and how they are easily misdiagnosed. I really loved Pippa’s character. She was such a shining light in forgiveness and hope. There's always something alluring about marriage and murder. Finding out who you're really living with and how they truly affect your life. The blinders we wear for those we love and the lengths we'll go to to protect and remain loyal at all costs. Not everything is as it seems, and sometimes our happy endings are not fairy tales. I love Sally Hepworth and the way she spins a story that keeps you guessing and on edge (no pun intended). The twist and turns and "omg" moments make her writing so perfect that you will want to stay up late like I did to find out the full truth and see who your spouse really is.
Gabe and Pippa have moved into their dream house. The only problem is the cliff by their house that is known as a suicide spot. Gabe is great at talking them off the edge, until one day he isn’t and a woman falls to her death.
Sally Hepworth is by far one of my favorite authors. While this may have been my least favorite of hers, it was still enjoyable. I was sick when reading it, so that may have affected my enjoyable level. I guess we all have to have a least favorite.. even from favorite authors! I didhttps://www.netgalley.com/member/book/260649/review# enjoy the short chapters and alternating view points. It just went in a different direction than I was expecting.
“That’s another funny thing about marriage. Sometimes when you look back on it, the worst moments are in fact the best.”
The Soulmate comes out 4/4.
The Soulmate is a riveting page-turning thriller. It is closely in line with other Sally Hepworth novels and will also be enjoyed by those who liked The Woman Upstairs and The Last Mrs. Parrish.
Set in modern day Australia, the Soulmate alternates between the narratives of Pippa and Amanda both in present day and the past. as we try to determine what happened to Amanda and who is to blame. You'll whip through this book as you try to put the pieces of both women's lives together to discover what happen that fateful day at The Drop. Altogether a quick read and a great escape novel.

The Australian seaside setting and questionable death make a perfect combination for an engrossing thriller. Gabe and Pippa have moved to the coast with their two girls and into a house with a disturbing history. Throughout the years people have come to jump to their death from the cliffs just outside the house. Gabe has been known to talk people out of jumping, so when a mutual acquaintance shows up at the cliffs and talks to Gabe before her death Pippa questions if it truly was a suicide. With Flashbacks and dual points of view you immediately get sucked in to the characters and their lives, both past and present. I was expecting the story to acknowledge suicides and mental health, but they are both very much their own characters which I appreciated. If you are looking for a beach read for spring break, this is it!
Loved all the twists and turns and constantly being on the edge of my seat. Thank you so much for the opportunity to read and review this incredible book!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this advanced reader copy.
I could not put this book down. Short chapters with cliffhangers and twists throughout. I was hooked from the very beginning. I enjoyed the aspect of the first person view from both female main characters. This is not something I’ve seen done a lot and I think it added to the story significantly. This is my first book from this author, but I definitely want to read her backlist.

Did I like this book?
Long answer
I could get fancy and talk about the how expertly Hepworth weaves a tale about social relationships, the human connectivity, the nuances of dealing with
Mental health issues and the consequences that leak into every aspect of ones life ….. I could go on about the lies and misdirection as the
Mystery evolves but all of that would just be me being fancy…..
Short answer
I liked it. A lot.
