I’ve read a couple other books by Sally Hepworth and was excited to get my hands on this.
It didn’t disappoint. The characters were a mix of likable and unlivable and I thought the use of a point of view from a dead woman hovering in this kind of in between stage was interesting. Some good twists that kept you guessing and pulled in to the story.
I’d recommend this to others.
I received this book free of charge from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Sally Hepworth does it again! The Soulmate is a twisty, surprising, and fast paced thriller centered around a cliffside where many go to end their life. Yea, it's dark! Gabe and Pippa left their life in the city to escape their pasts and embrace slow living in a cottage on a cliff (yes the same cliff). Gabe becomes the hero as over and over again he approaches the people on the cliff ready to jump and gets them to come back to mainland. But one night a person jumps, an unfortunate outcome, but not anything that Gabe could have helped. Or was he involved? Questions start surfacing as more information come to light and Pippa begins to question if she ever really knew the man she married.
I really enjoyed this one! It moved quickly and as each layer peeled back I got more and more into it. There were elements of the book that I expected but Sally still managed to layer in a few surprises which I love. No notes really and no disappointments. A really fun thriller to suck you in and read in a day!
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC - The Soulmate is out 4/4/23!
Sally Hepworth does it again! I just finished listening to The Soulmate thanks to MacMillan Audio! This was a very quick read! With alternating chapters between Pippa and Amanda and dual timelines of Now and Then,
Hepworth Is known for her intricate plot-lines and her fondness for red herrings! This is at its core a book about two women who have woven their lives so deeply around their significant others. There are lots of lessons to be gleamed from this book and I highly recommend reading it. The pacing is perfect for holding the reader's attention. I listened to most of the book, but when it got late, I switched to the Ebook courtesy of St. Martin's Press so I could keep listening.
If you are a fan of Sally Hepworth, this is a must read!
Pippa and Gabe move to their dream home with their two young daughters set atop a cliff known by locals as The Drop. Every now and then the family will spot a person precariously close to the edge. Gabe has become a bit famous for saving all 7 of these potential jumpers, talking with them until they change their mind about making that final leap, until Amanda.
Sally Hepworth can write the hell out of domestic suspense. I switched between ebook and audio for The Soulmate and loved the narrators, Barrie Kreinik and Jessica Douglas-Henry. We get 2 POV's, Pippa in the past and present, and Amanda before her death and after. The secrets, lies, and betrayals are all revealed throughout the novel which will keep you turning pages rushing to the end. I would suggest checking the trigger warnings for this book, there are quite a few, but all are handled tastefully. Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my complimentary copies.
Another nail biting, what-is-going-on winner from Sally Hepworth! I couldn’t stop listening to this one. I found myself actually driving the speed limit to make my car trip last a little longer. It took me a minute to get a grasp of the characters because there were two, both of which give us a “then” and “now”, but once I got into each piece I had no trouble keeping up. Both women were well defined in their characteristics.
I received an advanced copy. All thoughts are my own.
These days, Domestic/Psychological Suspense books are all over the place. I don't like a steady diet of the genre but Sally Hepworth is an author whose book I will grab every time. She has the talent of being very subtle in her writing. Sometimes the reader doesn't even realize that they are reading a suspense story until he/she is well into the story.
SOULMATE definitely falls into this category. I was a good way into the book before the first twist happens. Our lead character is Pippa, a work-from-home lawyer. Her husband, Gabe, is a stay-at-home dad who looks after their young “Irish twins”. Everyone loves Gabe and they seem like a perfect couple.
The chapters alternate between past and present. This works well as we learn the back story. Pippa is the principal narrator but we also have the voice of Amanda. Amanda happens to be a woman who died going over the cliff in front of Pippa's and Gabe's home. We hear from her posthumously. She contributes a lot to the story. The connection is a total surprise!
The story demonstrates how the ideal life can suddenly be upended. Secrets have repercussions. Seemingly innocent actions can have dire consequences.
As per usual with Ms Hepworth there are lots of little twists along the way. The book keeps the readers on their toes, we have no idea where it will end up. Not surprisingly, the ending was nothing like I expected it to be.
This is a fast read, entertaining and a page-turner. Short chapters, easy to think One More Chapter, until it's past midnight. I can see this story turned into a movie!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the Advance Readers Copy.
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and review this title prior to publication. I have now read 3 books by Sally Hepworth, and they are all solid 4-star reads for me. This domestic thriller is set in a coastal small town at a cliffside cottage, near where many have jumped and many have been literally talked off of the ledge. The latest victim went over, and we discover in this story that Gabe and Pippa, the central couple, knew her. This is a twisty suspense/thriller about relationships of all kinds: marriage, friendship, family, parent, friends, workplace, community, etc., and I really appreciated the nuanced ways Hepworth was able to explore all of these while keeping the tension tightly controlled through the nonlinear timeline.
Thanks to St. Martin's press for this ARC!
Pippa and Gabe buy their dream house... which happens to be right next to a cliff notorious for suicide attempts. Gabe seems to have a knack for helping people who come to the cliffside, but one day, a woman ends up dead.
Sally Hepworth is phenomenal at writing domestic suspense. I loved the two couples involved in this story and seeing how all the details worked together to finally form a picture through multiple POVs and timelines. I read this one in basically one sitting because I was hooked. I HAD to know what the connection was and who was really nefarious. An excellent, bingeable book to have on your radar this spring!
Thank you Netgalley and Sally Hepworth for supplying me an ARC in exchange for an honest review! All opinions are my own. This book was interesting. Not my favorite from this author, but still interesting.
It follows Pippa & Gabe, a family of two young children who lives in Australia where the house is on an edge of the cliff that happens to be a suicidal spot and Gabe is known for being able to talk people out of jumping until one day he can’t talk someone out of jumping and it takes a toll on the family. It just happens to be a woman that Pippa knows all to well but for some reason Gabe didn’t tell Pippa that the woman who jumped was someone they both knew and suddenly Pippa starts second guessing her husband and why he didn’t tell her? I really liked hearing Amanda’s POV especially after she was dead, that was very creative and one I kept looking forward to reading from her perspective. I liked all the different POV’s and learning more about Pippa and her husband Gabe and even at some points the adorable children they have. This wasn’t my favorite book by Sally Hepworth but I’ll still read whatever she comes out with because she’s one of my favorite authors. If you want a fast pace thriller/mystery I don’t recommend this one but if you want something slow and interesting I recommend. Nothing was majorly shocking but the book did wrap up really well with no loose threads & no questions needed.
This is one of those rare books that promises to be thrilling and addictive and actually delivers. I was sucked into this one right away and the short chapters made it easy to say "just one more" until the book was finished in a single sitting. I loved the format of dual points of view and the two timelines of now and then. Sally Hepworth excels at creating and maintaining a high level of suspense and writes with a cinematic style that I found so compelling it is undeniable that this book is difficult to put down, once started.
Hepworth is the Queen of domestic suspense and I would read anything she writes. I would read a menu or a real estate contract if she was behind it, and I suspect they would be very well done. She has a keen insight and humour that elevates moments within books, as well as an interesting way of playing with time and what characters know. Her body of work is impressive, and I hope she keeps cranking out books at an impressive clip because she is a favourite of mine and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an egalley. All opinions expressed are my own.
Pippa and Gabe, an Australian couple appear to have it all two beautiful daughters, a beautiful cottage by the sea, and a loving marriage. Or so we are led to believe. But when a woman jumps from a cliff and Pippa catches Gabe in a lie, it is clear that there is more to this marriage than meets the eye.
Wow! I am giving this a 4 star because Sally Hepworth kept me on the edge of my seat. As the narrative alternates between two characters, the story goes in so many directions that my head was spinning! This was one of my most anticipated books of 2023 and it didn't disappoint. If you like a good tale with very unpredictable events, this will certainly delight and entertain you.

I have liked the other books by this author I have read, and this one is no exception! Has all the elements anyone would want out of a good thriller with a great ending.
I enjoyed a few of the author’s previous books and this one was a good story overall.
The writing flies easy between the two timelines and the characters are interesting portrayed and easy to remember who is whom and what their part is in the story.
I’m not sure how I feel about the actual twist but the ending was much better than I was expecting honestly. Or at least different in a good way.
The story is full of lies, deceiving moments and likewise scenes between the main characters and their marriages.
The atmospheric setting played a big part in the suspenseful feeling overall and I liked that.
It’s domestic thriller that kept me guessing what’s actually going on and how will this end.
I’m not a big fan of domestic thrillers or cheating stories but this one was good and I think many readers will enjoy it.
NetGalley read now title
Well i have not be reading the last few months for personal reasons, but yesterday i decided to restart and get into my reading rhythm. So i scanned my many titles and immediately chose Sally Hepworth’s “The Soulmate”. It did not disappoint! I’ve read her other books and i was excited to read this one. I finished it in one day. She knows how to introduce her characters and get you hooked from the first page. I read about 50 pages and started trying to figure out the twists after knowing about the four main characters. I don’t want to give the plot, you can read the summary. Anyway never have i ever figured out what happens. You won’t either! A must read. I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy, but it is publishing soon. Enjoy. I did. @netgalley #netgalley
If you’ve never read a Sally Hepworth book you’re really missing out. I’ve read several and her stories never disappoint! The Soulmate centers around the marriage of Gabe and Pippa Gerard and their two young daughters. They live in a tiny cottage along the beach with a cliff in their backyard that is a well-known spot for people committing suicide. Gabe is becoming a bit of a local hero because he has been able to talk many people out of jumping to their death. Until one day he doesn’t! Did Max’s believed infidelity cause Amanda to go to the cliff to end her life or was she pushed? This story is filled with so many secrets. It covers mental illness and shows the impact it can have on a family. It’s a book about love, not only marital but between family members as well. It’s a riveting story that at times had me feeling like I was on the edge of my seat and holding my breath! It’s a suspenseful thriller that I highly recommend. I’d like to thank St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the arc to read and review. I really enjoyed reading this and I am giving it a 5 star rating.
This was a very quick read. I was pulled in from the beginning because I was intrigued about the mystery, but it was not a "wow" book for me. There was a feel that there was something sinister going on that kept me reading, but then the ending fell a little flat. I love psychological thrillers so it was a decent read, but I wanted a bit more thrill to it.
Thank you NetGalley and St Martins Press for the advanced readers copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A tale of marriages based on deceit, lies, compassion, loyalty and fidelity. This is my first Hempworth book and I liked it. I wanted to keep reading it and although the anticipation wasn’t like heart pounding and mouth dropping it was still great. Her anticipation was subtle but still had you thinking “oh wow didn’t see that coming.”
I dabbled with a 3 or 4 because I didn’t care for the ending all that much but up until 85% it was a 4!
The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth was a fast paced thriller that starts off with a bang and keeps the reader wanting to know more. It is not a long book or audio so that helps to make the reader really engaged in the plot. The short chapters and the interesting backstory really kept me wanting more. I read this one in two short sittings and while I wasn't blown away by the ending, I felt that it wrapped up nicely. I definitely have Sally Hepworth on my auto buy list because she does not disappoint.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
“It was delightful to be delighted in.”
This book has well defined characters that are all likable in their own ways.
The characters were well developed and the storyline, especially the ending…was unique. I mean who ever heard of a happy ending to this sort of thriller?
I really appreciate this author’s style of writing because she has a way of transporting you into the story as you watch it unfold. This book is no different, I felt like I was standing there on the edge of the cliff with the chill of the wind at my back (Maryland weather is crazy so it added to that atmospheric vibe).
I loved The Good Sister but wasn’t as big of a fan of The Younger Wife (although the use of the water bottle was kinda cool) BUT even if you aren’t a big fan of a particular novel written by this author, it’s likely going to be based on storyline preference and not her incredible talent for crafting a well written story. Not every book is for everybody. This author is absolutely an auto-buy author for me.
This book is currently available as a #botm pick and had I not already read it, it definitely would’ve been my choice this month because it’s an excellent read and well worth checking out.
The Soulmate is the complete package; thriller, love story and tragedy all wrapped up in one. I think this masterpiece is Sally Hepworth's best book to date. I am excited to see how she tops this and I know without a doubt that she will. She's that damn good!
