Gabe, Pippa, and their two young daughters have moved to what they thought was their dream “cliff” house along the coast. Unfortunately, the cliff is a location that has been the scene of suicides in the past, although Gabe has successfully talked some of the potential victims “off the ledge”. One night, a woman appears on the cliff. Gabe rushes to her, but she goes over the side. Gabe’s intervention looked suspicious to Pippa, but she keeps those thoughts to herself. When she discovers that the fatality was known to Gabe, years of secrets, bad behavior, and denial unravel.
The story is told in three timelines…now, then, after and 2 POVs. There are complex relations full of intrigue in this engrossing read. Hepworth knows how to hold readers’ attention. There are twists and turns as secrets are revealed. There is also a lot unsaid about what women will overlook to stay in a marriage, even one that is not healthy for them, as well as the toll of mental illness on families.
It did annoy me that both main female characters turn a blind eye to many warning signs with their husbands, but I guess we all do that at one point or another.
This is the second book I have read by Hepworth and have enjoyed both of them. She is becoming a favorite author for me.
This one was just OK for me. It's very much a page turner in that it has short chapters, cliff hangers, multiple POVs, secrets, etc. I guess where it really lost me was the infidelity and how it was dealt with? It was kind of talked about as not a big deal- and I didn't feel that Gabe's mental illness was parsed out enough. The concept of people coming to the cliff the family lives near to jump was intriguing to me, but it didn't deliver. I didn't feel that the ending was satisfying either.
I'm not really sure what happened to Sally Hepworth's writing/style because I LOVED The Mother in Law, and then after that there have just been kind of....lame (I feel so mean saying this) thrillers. I do think that many will enjoy this but, again, just OK for me.
Another win by Sally Hepworth! I love how quickly her characters grab you, and the story line moves effortlessly. I devoured this book and loved every minute!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for this excellent read in exchange for my honest feedback.
My thanks to Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for an advanced copy of this e-book and audio-book.
Gabe and Pippa find a dream cottage on the coast with high cliffs. Also, an area known for those wishing to take their life jumping from these cliffs. But Gabe has talked so many away from the edge, saving their lives, he is known for his sensitivity. Until day a woman is on the cliff and goes over while Gabe's arms are out. Did he try to save her or did he push her? The story takes us through the ups and downs of Gabe and Pippa and their lives and those in their world. It's hard to know just what is what, but the short chapters and compelling story kept me so interested to the end. A quick read and another good story from author Sally Hepworth.
Pippa, Gabe, and their two young daughters have recently settled into a cottage high on the cliffs above the ocean after moving from Melbourne, hoping for a fresh start in many ways. Unknown to them, the walkway by their new home is locally known as "The Drop"; a place where people often come to commit suicide. Since they moved in, seven people have come planning to do just that, and Gabe has successfully talked each of them into changing their mind, becoming a local hero of sorts. When Pippa sees another woman out by the edge, she calls police as Gabe goes out to try to talk to her. As Pippa completes her call, she sees Gabe with outstretched hands, and the woman is gone! When it turns out that Gabe knew the woman, and the dead woman's husband insists she never would have committed suicide, Pippa begins to question whether Gabe had tried to help the woman or pushed her to her death.
Told in chapters alternating between the POVs of Pippa and Amanda (the dead woman), each in two different times (before and after Amanda's fall), this is an enthralling read that is sure to hold your attention! What a twisted and delicious read about marriage, the secrets we keep, and the things we hide while striving to be what we want to be for our spouse.
My thanks to St. Martin's Press for letting me read a DRC via NetGalley. Publication is scheduled for 4/4/23. All opinions stated in this review are my own and are freely given.
I never stray from the romance genre but something about this book made me want to give it a shot and I am so glad that I did. The twists and turns were delicious and the ending left my jaw on the floor. Highly recommend!
This book really didn’t blow me away. I’m extremely thankful for NetGalley and the opportunity to read this eARC, but I probably won’t be buying this book myself. It was well written and beautifully executed, but it felt like it was missing something. It claims to be a thriller, but it was moderate mystery at best. Had it been presented more as a mystery, I may have enjoyed it more, but it was extremely slow and anti-climatic for a “thriller”. I love dual timelines and multiple POVS, so that’s always a huge plus in my book. I was intrigued by the “after” POV of the victim, since you don’t typically see a POV from a dead person. Overall, I give this book 3.5 stars!
This story had everything: a messy marriage, mental illness, family secrets, murder, drama.. you name it. I enjoyed how fast paced it was and did not see the connection between the characters coming at all. Max was my favorite character once everything was revealed.
This book was one of my favorites this year! It was hard to put down! So many twists that I never saw coming. I enjoyed the story being told from different peoples perspectives. The ending tied everything together. Definitely a 5 star read! Thanks NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC!

This review will be for the audio and ebook version
Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio and St. Martin's Press for the ARC and Early listen! Loved this story. Both in ebook and audio. I did listen to most of it. Loved the story and the mystery surrounding the characters. Great character development. A story you don't want to stop listening/reading. It grabs hold of you from the very beginning. Author is a fabulous story teller and the narrator did a great job telling the story and giving the characters life.
Highly recommend!
THE SOULMATE by Sally Hepworth is a fast-paced and gripping domestic suspense novel that kept me guessing right up to the end. It is a riveting story of marriage, betrayal and the devastating effects of mental illness on families and friends. Pippa and Gabe Gerard have a beautiful cottage on the cliff of a coastal town nearby Melbourne, Australia where they live with their two young daughters. Pippa worries that the cliff near their home is a well-known spot for those looking to end their lives. In fact, Gabe has found some notoriety as someone who has been able to talk people down, making him a bit of a local hero. One night a woman comes to the cliff and Gabe tries to talk to her, but she ends up going over to her death. When Pippa later learns that Gabe actually knew the victim, she can’t help question what happened that night. And Pippa is not the only with questions. The story is told from two perspectives, Pippa’s and the deceased woman, Amanda, both before and after her death. What a wild ride, full of secrets, lies and twists I never saw coming. I thoroughly enjoyed this latest suspense novel from Sally Hepworth and highly recommend it. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read and review an early copy.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me an eARC of this book.
I love Sally Hepworth and I will continue to read anything she puts out. I enjoyed this book a lot. I love how she writes the family drama. I really enjoyed the multiple POVs as well as the chapters alternating between past and present. I also liked Amanda's chapters a lot. I felt like that added a little something different to this story. This was a pretty solid domestic thriller with some nice twists and turns. I had a great time reading it.
Seriously, I can’t get enough of Sally Hepworth’s writing! I absolutely love each book that I have read and each one is just as much of a thriller as the one before. This book is about Pippa who is married to Gabe and they have two daughters. Then you have Amanda who is now deceased with her husband Max. Gabe had lost his job working for Max and went into a small rage at the office so they move out to a new village with a house on a cliff. The cliff is will known for suicidal people. Somehow Gabe as been very successful in talking most jumpers out of ending their lives except Amanda?
Did Pippa see what she thought she saw it looked liked Gabe may have pushed Amanda? But Gabe is so good with his daughters and other people so she doesn’t think about it much. Amanda is there for all of Gabe’s challenges but she is starting to realize there is more to figure out about Gabe. This book is written in the now and then but easy to keep up with the storylines. This book was hard to put down because the writer has a way of making you get involved with the characters.
I received this ARC from Netgalley for free, and I leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you to net galley and St. Martins press for the arc of The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth. Sally Hepworth book was full of descriptive settings. i felt like I could imagine the people, the settings and the situations.. I thought the soulmate was going to be about how to murder a husband but, nope you have to read the book to understand what is going on. It is fast paced and entertaining. Sally Hepworth is an author that I will continue to read.
Thank you so much to St Martins Press & Netgalley for this copy of The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth!
Hepworth continues to secure a spot as one of my top domestic drama/suspense writers. The Soulmate might be my new favorite by her.
Once I started this I knew I wouldn’t be able to stop. The pacing? Perfect. The dual POV + dual timelines for each? Amazing. The juicy twists and secrets? Chef’s kiss. Give me more. I don’t know what Sally’s next book will be, but I’m already counting the days until I can devour it.
The Soulmate is a domestic thriller that tackles the normal issues of trust, marriage and betrayal. But it does it in an engaging manner that kept me involved throughout.
The story revolves around Pippa and Gabe, a couple that own a cottage by a particularly dangerous section of a cliff known as The Drop. The Drop has become a place where numerous people have come to end their lives. Up until the start of the story, Gabe has been able to literally talk everyone down off the ledge. But not that night. And what Gabe says happened doesn’t quite coincide with what Pippa thought she saw.
The story is told from Pippa’s and Amanda’s POVs. Amanda is the woman Gabe didn’t save. The story goes back and forth from before the event through the event and into the future as the police investigate what happened.
Hepworth takes her time setting up the story and introducing each of the characters. She gives just the right amount of suspense. Pippa at times seemed a little dense when it came to Gabe. Or maybe she’s what I’d call “blind and in love”, willing to overlook the little niggles. I like that Hepworth isn’t afraid to tackle the ripple effects of mental illness.
Hepworth doesn't disappoint with lots of fun twists and turns. The ending worked without being OTT which is my major complaint with thrillers. I tore through this in a single day.
My thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance copy of this book.
Sally Hepworth's The Soulmate is an addictive novel that delves into the intricacies of marriage, betrayal, and the secrets that can push us to the brink. The story follows Gabe and Pippa, a couple who moves into their dream home on a cliff overlooking the ocean, only to find out that it's become a popular spot for people to end their lives.
As the plot unfolds, we see Gabe repeatedly coming to the rescue of those in danger, until one day he doesn't. When Pippa discovers that Gabe knew the victim, she starts to question whether the woman jumped or was pushed. The unraveling of the mystery takes us on a rollercoaster ride of unexpected twists and turns, as the perfect facade of their marriage begins to crack and the darkest secrets are revealed.
What makes this novel so gripping is how well the author has developed the characters and their relationships. The depth of the emotions and the complexity of their interactions keep the reader engaged from beginning to end. Additionally, the setting of the story adds to the tension, as the beautiful cliffside cottage becomes a symbol of the danger that lurks beneath the surface.
Overall, The Soulmate is a thrilling and emotional novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. The unexpected twists and turns will keep you guessing, and the underlying sadness of the story will tug at your heartstrings. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers with complex characters and relationships, this is a must-read.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book.
I was not super engaged at the beginning but thankfully it ramped up a LOT. There were alternating timelines which I enjoyed - just “then” and “now,” it was up to the reader to figure out when “then” was and how it progressed.
Some parts were slow and dragged a bit for me, but the second half and definitely the last chunk I was a big fan of. Well done!
I’ve read every one of Sally’s books because they are each so unique and always keep me turning the pages. This one was amazing. I had no idea what was the truth. There were twists and turns right up until the very end. I really enjoyed it. Thank you to Netgalley for the chance to read this.
I will leave a review on Amazon and B&N on April 4th
Wow this book was filled with so many twists and turns, I didn't know if I was coming or going. I would think I knew what was going to happen next, but no it would be a complete game changer. I definitely would recommend this book to everyone. Its hard for me to find a book that keeps me so caught up in it, but this book did exactly that.
