With plenty of intrigue and rescue moments, The Secret Society of Salzburg by Renee Ryan captured the horror of being part Jewish with a Hitler supporter for a husband. My favorite aspect of reading World War II stories is showing the brave women and men who risked their own lives to help the Jews who were being persecuted for their religion or their appearance. With the plot, it really captured my attention as readers will observe Elsa as she struggles with helping the Jews and keeping her opera singing career alive. Hattie used her art to help rescue many Jews and help them escape into England. Of course, there was romance, but nothing too over the top. A little bit of horror when the story moves to a concentration camp, but nothing that readers familiar with this genre have not read before. Overall, The Secret of Salzburg by Renee Ryan is a nice World War II novel that I enjoyed reading.

This is an excellent, suspenseful, historical fiction novel. Set in WWII, a famous German opera singer befriends two English sisters. Together, these women, along with many others, establish a network to rescue as many Jews as possible. However, with the number of spies and traitors growing daily as Hitler rages on, its hard trying to determine who to trust.
Vera and Hattie work in the secretarial pool for academia typing educational treatises by day and living out their artistic dreams by night. When the sisters fall in love with opera, and of course, the talented Elsa, the wheels begin to turn.
These are lovable characters willing to stand up for what is right. Definitely a great read!
Well written and researched. I found the writing strong, & the characters even stronger. A nice plot allows for a pacy read that kept me engaged. I'd recommend this book to all fans of the genre. Thank you very much for the chance to read. I thoroughly enjoyed!

An absolutely incredible story that is set amongst one of the most trying times in history during WWII. As I read this story, I really felt all of what was going on. I was immersed in the story of political tension and the life or death struggle of Jewish refugees. Friendship moves this story, as two sitters befriend a famous opera singer, and together they build a secret society to help rescue Jews from Hitler and his men.
I would 10/10 recommend this book to anyone who enjoys World War II era adventures with suspense.

This is an excellent read!
Set in WWII, a famous opera singer befriends two English sisters. As Hitler rises to power, Jews begin to hope for asylum in other countries. Unable to turn a blind eye to the reality before them, these women, along with many others set into motion a network to rescue as many Jews as they can.
But everywhere, there are spies and traitors. In a real life game of trying to decide who to trust, the smuggling of people goes on. But how long before bitter betrayal strikes?
Vera, Hattie, and Elsa will tug at your heartstrings.
The Secret Society of Salzburg is both an uplifting and heart-wrenching novel about the importance of art and beauty in the darkest of times. Set in the glittering world of Europe’s greatest opera houses, Renee Ryan weaves a masterful story of growing political tensions before WWII and the life-or-death struggle Jewish refuges faced anchored by the unbreakable friendship of two extraordinary women. Hattie and her sister work in low paying British government jobs but both have bigger dreams. Both discover more of themselves when the fall in love with opera and become close friends with an opera singer. I recommend this book to anyone interested in WWII history and suspense novels.
Hattie and her sister work in low paying British government jobs but both have bigger dreams. Both discover more of themselves when the fall in love with opera and become close friends with an opera singer. Of course, Hitler and his hatred bod Jews changes everything. Wonderful characters set against a backdrop that begs us to ask ourselves if we are willing to stand up for what is right.
