Most people don't understand how important Fascia is (or even what it is) I know i certainly didn't before i started studying to be a yoga teacher. There are some world renown speakers who regularly talk about it's importance - David Lesonak now joins them. A really important book explaining in easily digestible terms why it's crucial to get to grips with the role it plays in everything form movement to rehab.
The comprehensive text on Fascia.
Though it reads like a textbook, the second edition of Fascia keeps us appraised of research pertaining to a previously speculative science. In order to fully understand fascia, the book delves into history as well as anecdotal examples. Having listened to David Lesondak speak, I would highly recommend supplementing this text with video- his passion really brings the material to life.
Learning about fascia has immeasurably changed my approach to bodywork. Whether you are a physical therapist, occupational, massage, trainer, chiropractor, orthopedic professional, etc. this is an excellent resource to have in your library.

Disclaimer: although NetGalley and Handspring/Singing Dragon/JKP arranged to send me the 2nd edition of David Lesondak’s “Fascia-what it is and why it matters,” for review consideration (thank you!), the opinions that follow are my own. I also have his 1st edition; procured on my own.
Emerging fields of study are rife with equal parts definitiveness and disagreement, and the study of fascia is fast-moving, tricky territory. This new edition is warranted, and it’s successful at keeping us up to date on the latest.
I was at the 2015 Fascia Research Congress outside of Washington, DC, that David writes about, and I remember well how the sparks flew when the new definition of fascia was presented. Here we are, years later, and the matter is still, for many, far from settled.
We need a guide we can trust, and Lesondak is ideal. He navigates even the slipperiest zones with a steady hand, with results that are responsibly researched and presented. The writing here is simultaneously reliable and entertaining; the gentle humor lightens the density of the scientific and technical aspects, on which we are never short-changed.
If your work takes you anywhere near the study of fascia (health & medicine, manual therapy, coaching & fitness…), you need this edition to stay current. With fresh research consistently coming down the line, such as from Tulane University’s spanking-new Fascia Institute, it can be a challenge to keep up with it all. When reading the research papers coming out over the next few years, you’ll be grateful to have Lesondak’s indexing and glossary to help navigate the territory.
Fortunately, that does not take any of the fun away; despite its technical nature, the book’s a great read!
I honestly do not care which version is which, that is not important to me. What is important is that there is a comprehensive book about fascia! I have been a licensed massage therapist since 2014, and I cannot even tell you how important fascia is and how it directly relates to the contractility of muscles. Fascia is why your muscles have the ability to move. My favorite massage modality, that I also hold a certification in is called myofascial release. This modality is basically manipulating fascia so muscles can move.
I absolutely loved that this indulged the muscle nerd in me! I love anatomy and physiology! This was so fun to read and the author explains this well to the novice. I appreciate that Lesondak made learning about fascia fun. I definitely need to get this at publishing for my home library. I enjoyed it that much.
This book helps me in dual careers as veterinary assistant and as a licensed massage therapist. I hope to get my license someday as a registered vet tech and specialize in rehab or orthopedics.
Highly recommended for anyone in the medical or veterinary field. The principle of fascia in is animals too!

"Fascia, 2nd edition" explains what fascia is, how it works, and different methods for treating fascia problems. The chapters covered: what fascia is, tensegrity, studying fascia anatomy, fascia and the nervous system, fascia-like structures in the brain, fascia and organs, recognizing a fascia problem, and various methods of treating fascia problems. That last chapter talked about different methods, what the method was like, and where to learn it. All throughout, there were pictures of fascia (or related things, like tensegrity models). The text wasn't highly technical but it's in-depth enough that it's probably most interesting to bodyworkers and other people with some medically training. While very interesting, clearly fascia needs a lot more study--and this book is meant to both inform and interest people in furthering this research.
An interesting amazing read….Fascia - What It Is and Why It Matters serves as an essential primer for professionals, such as movement educators, physical therapists, osteopaths, massage therapists, fitness professionals, and doctors enabling them to attain a solid grasp of what fascia is and what it does in the body. It provides an understanding of fascia as a tissue, of its role in the various systems of the body and of its clinical significance. The book is complete in itself, but also it may also serve as a springboard to deeper explorations should the reader wish to go further.
The growing research on fascia is fascinating, particularly as the incidence of long misunderstood and dismissed conditions such as Ehlers Danlos and other connective tissue disorders seem to growing. This is an excellent, unparalled resource that I plan to purchase in print as soon as it is released.
Great thanks to NetGalley and Jessica Kingsley Publishers for access to a digital ARC.
