Thrilling read! I was able to connect with all of the characters and throughly enjoyed the story the author painted.
This was an interesting book. I can't say it was my favorite sapphic retelling that I've read, but it was a good read nonetheless. My favorite part of the book is the characters. I really enjoyed Snow White and Azura. Their chemistry is excellent.
There are some parts of the story towards the end that felt disjointed. As other readers have pointed out, the ending was a little confusing. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series to see if these things get cleared up.
I was given an ARC for my honest feedback.
Thank you NetGalley! It had a very solid beginning and middle, it was a slow burn but the ending was too fast. I wished the ending took
Its time as much as the beginning and middle. Snow and Azura were both really likeable, and pretty well developed. I can’t wait to read more from the series.
Unexpectedly sapphic as heck and I am here for it!
This book has obvious notes of a full retelling universe and you see it right off the bat with some Snow White meets Snow Queen, twined up with some Little Mermaid and a plethora of other classics. And to see the villain melt so thoroughly over literally the most cinnamon roll of a character was *mwah*.
I gave it a straight 3.5-5 on everything from writing to plot to character development and ticked an extra few stars for spice. It was middle of the road spicy, so nothing too "Oh my! I need an ice bath." but also not tame enough that I would consider sharing this with the older teen, young adult audience.
I was intrigued by the blurb for this book and subsequently sorely disappointed by the time I made it to the second chapter. The quality of the writing simply didn't hold up to what it could have been. There were attempts at making the characters multi-dimensional but they all still felt very flat. The plot for most of the book was the "contest" set by the King and yet the resolution of this contest is stuck in at the end of the last chapter as a "oh yeah hey she won". I was expecting a Snow White retelling but what I found was a Once Upon A Time fanfiction. Every other chapter we are introduced to another character from a different fairy tale.
I will admit that I found the erotic scenes to be fairly well written and evocative. The trope of women "tasting" like fruit and such is overused but I can forgive it a bit more in a fantasy/magic setting. I also liked that Snow wasn't "white as snow" in this retelling and was instead the exact opposite. It was a nice play on the standard theme.
I don't recommend and won't be reading the subsequent books.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Rose and Star Publishing LLC for providing me an advanced copy of Snow White.
To say I loved this book is an understatement. I love retellings (I am very excited for book 2) and a sapphic one is even better. This book is 90 per cent smut or smutty thoughts etc, so if you expecting a lot of plot, sorry. It is the perfect reading slump book and I just adored it.
I loved the characters and although I thought the ending was very rushed, I still massively enjoyed it and the dynamic going on within. I literally have just downloaded Jeanette's entire bibliography soooooo....
I received an electronic advanced reader copy of this book in return for my honest opinion. Thank you to Rose & Star Publishing, Jeanette Rose and Alice Callisto for sending me this!
I’m a huge Fairy Tale retelling and this book did not let me down. I’d been looking for a good Snow White retelling, so to find a Sapphic one, I hit the jackpot.
This book also features characters from other Fairy Tales such as Belle and Eric, and while many origins are understandably different, I loved their inclusion, foreshadowing future works in the series.
I loved the two main characters within this; Snow White and Azura. I found the spin on the Evil Queen to be brilliant and I was all for a relationship between these two.
Azura ends up at the court as she vies for the hand of the King; Snow White’s father. She soon finds herself distracted however by his beautiful, but naive daughter. With hidden adversaries everywhere, will Azura complete her goal and marry the King or will she give in to true love.
I requested this as I enjoy reading retellings. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this version. I did like that characters from other fairy tales were in this book, but that was about it.
The first few pages were good and the Azura makes a crass comment and I am thinking to myself, who even thinks like that?! I move on and it seems to be more of the same, from then on, I struggled, and when the action in the bedroom between Azura and another person happened it just put me off completely.
Sadly, this was not for me.
I just could not get into this book. The writing wasn’t enjoyable for me and the plot seemed to be all over the place. I also didn’t really feel the connection between Snow and Azura. The end makes it seem like this will become a series and I don’t think I will be continuing on with it.
Rating:
2.75 out of 5
Summary:
This novel retells the story of Snow White, but in a more modern style. Snow’s father wants to remarry after his wife had died, but he is scared of finding the wrong woman – and one that is not friendly to his daughter Snow – so he makes this search for a new love into a competition. Many princesses are invited to the castle and can compete with each other for the king’s hand. Snow is asked to help her dad with his search and meets Azura, who quickly makes an impression. They are very much interested in each other and don’t make it a secret. But can a princess be together with an evil witch?
Review:
Let’s begin to say that I really liked how multiple Disney figures are in one way or another woven into the story. Some of the princesses are part of the competition and other names are used in another way (such as for the horses). I really like those tiny details and intertextualities.
A few other basic features I really appreciated were a dual POV, where you can look into the minds of both Snow and Azura and puzzle together their thoughts and knowledge. I also liked the addition of the map in the book, but in my online version, it wasn’t easy to scroll so I didn’t really use it while reading. The theme of royalty and a competition also spoke to me, since it made me think of the selection series, which I absolutely loved! Lastly, the magic was a great addition as well! I always love some good magical stories.
Then, I would like to make a special remark about Azura, because I LOVE THE VILLAIN. She has a great, strong personality and really appeals to be very feministic. She is also, in my opinion, the only character in the novel with a clear and distinct personality and I really like well-written and well-developed characters.
However, I was a bit shocked when reading all of the 18+ content, which – at least for me – came out of nowhere. When I read the summary of the book, I was hoping for a mysterious story with tensions and fear and also a bit of romance as a side theme. This was not the case, since the romance was the main focus. Maybe it was my own fault and maybe it wasn’t, but be warned, because there are a lot of explicit 18+ scenes in this novel.
What I also would’ve liked to have read more about was the competition, but for that, the story would have to have been plot-driven. The competition was very much in the background and didn’t really have a clear description or rules as to what was happening. It felt more like there were some princesses staying in the castle and just living there, instead of actual competition.
Lastly, I thought the ‘innocent’ descriptions of Snow were more depicted as ‘child-like’ to the point where I was annoyed at her so-called innocence, because she acted dumb more than innocent.
Conclusion:
This book is a quick and nice summer read with some adventure and much romance (18+) in it. I would not recommend reading it if you are not a fan of smut, but if you are, I think you’ll like this! The plot is not that difficult and well-developed, but the characters are developed more and they make the story.
This was a tough one to review. There's lots of intriguing fairy tale elements that I enjoyed. And a dark fantasy plot that happens, with the evil Azura wanting to use everything and everyone for her own power. But the naïve, enchanting and innocent Snow worms her way into the cold heart of Azura. As Azura herself opens up a little more, too.
The story building, and relationship went too fast for my liking and at times often felt skeevy with the constant narrative of characters wanting to do lascivious things to each other, despite barely knowing one another. It felt smutty, for smuts sake.
Overall there is a connection there, and an interesting tale, but it's marred by clumsy plotting that hides a lot of details in the effort to be 'mysterious' but the lack of information, also causes you to lack patience and emotion for what is happen, which honestly by the end I wasn't even sure about, and felt a lot was skipped over. It only gives you enough for the basics. Leaving you hanging for more, and ultimately ending in a cliff-hanger that was unsatisfying.
2.5 Stars at most. 3 is being generous.
Azura is obsessed with power and tries to become more powerful by getting married to a Royal Bloodline. On her way to gain power, she meets Snow White who is ignored by the princesses who have come to gain the support of her father. Both of them are drawn to each other. What does the future hold for them?
I really liked the story. Azura💜 and Snow White💙 The use of dual POVs gave an insight into the mind of the character. I love to read retellings and the cover played a major role in adding this book to my TBR.
But I felt that the ending was short and rushed. I loved how the characters of Belle and Eric supported the development of the story. This was a great read!
CW : depression, attempted suicide, a whole lotta sex.
The start seemed promising and I usually enjoy fairytale retellings but this one? This just didn’t do it for me.
The book felt very fanfiction-y with simple writing and a cubic butt-ton of very spicy scenes complete with constant intrusive sexual thoughts.
There wasn’t a whole lot of story until the last 10%
The ending was rushed and if the character’s had any kind of story it was quickly done over (Snow’s forest experiences and Azura’s past).
I spent the whole book rooting for Lady Lock more than I did for Snow and A. Their relationship seemed toxic at best but no no it’s okay because they ‘love eachother’ right? 🙄🙄
I love a retelling so much this was such a fun and quick read I really enjoyed it will definitely recommend to people who enjoy those genre
I'm not normally a fan/reader of fantasy, or anything Disney/Disney adjacent, but the idea of a queer retelling of a classic fairytale intrigued me. I was pleasantly surprised how quickly I got invested in the novel, given my unfamiliarity with the genre - I think this is because the narrative is very character driven, and isn't overloaded with superfluous world-building (I really have no interest in that). I enjoyed the dual POV; each chapter alternates between the perspective of Snow and Azura, the main characters, which gave a clearer view of their inner motivations and more insight into their personalities. The ending felt a little rushed to me - a lot of action was contained within a relatively small number of pages, so it sometimes felt sparse on detail. However, since it leaves the door wide open for a follow-up/continuation, I can look past this, assuming that further details or explanations will be given in future. Overall, I found this to be a quick, light and fun read, and I will definitely look out for more from this series.
Content/Trigger Warnings: f/f sex scene, suicide attempt
Overall an enjoyable read!
This is a re-telling of Snow White, as indicated by the title, with a mixture of other familiar fairytale characters. The King is looking for a new Queen and has invited all eligible princesses and ladies of the kingdom to come to his castle. One of these ladies is Azura, a woman practising Dark Magic to get what she wants, and she wants to become the new Queen. The King's daughter, Snow, and the Evil Queen in the making, Azura, find that they get along very well. In fact, they're both instantly drawn to each other; Both dreaming of the others' kiss.
About the characters; I like what Callisto and Rose have done with Azura and Snow. They're very interesting women with motives behind their actions, but I sometimes felt a lack of depth to them. I would have liked to get to know them properly, learning what it is that fuels their desires and fears, what made them the people they are when the story begins in chapter one. Don't get me wrong, we get that to a certain extent, I just felt like some decisions they made along the line was rushed or even slightly out of character. At least according to the information I've been presented with on the pages, or rather the lack thereof.
As for the setting; The story is just scratching on the surface of what could have been done with this idea. Granted, this is only the first book of an upcoming series, so they might have left out details on purpose, but the reader would really benefit from a more world building. It's an interesting world and I enjoyed reading about it, but it left me wanting for more detail. The last 20 percent of the book is one of the main examples for this. I won't spoil for any future readers, but I will say that there were definitely scenes that could (and possibly even should) have been written, rather than skipped over and and quickly told within a few sentences on the next page. Rather dissappointing when you've gotten to the culminating point and feel robbed of valuable information, such as intriguing world building.
Having said all of this; I enjoyed reading it and I think that's probably the reason that I feel like I wanted more than what the pages offered. And in quite a short book, just over 200 pages, Callisto and Rose could have afforded to treat us to more elaborate descriptions of their otherwise lovely story.
---> Any potential reader should also be aware of that this book contains explicit sex scenes and a suicide attempt.
Anyone who knows me will tell you two things: I love fairytale retellings and I love LGBT books. So imagine my delight upon stumbling on the exact book of my dreams! A Snow White fairytale retelling but sapphic! Just going into this book I was so excited and it did not disappoint. I have also fallen madly in love with Snow, she is so bubbly and adorable you can't help but love her. And Azura? Me too girl. Me. Too. I too get distracted by girls and their assets. And their personalities. And their smile. And their- ANYWAYS. This book was amazing and I will definitely be getting my hands on a physical copy.
It was a okayish book for me. I liked the plot and that writing was good.
I didn't expect the smut but it was a pleasent surprise.
The couple felt like every other evil and innocent but I didn't have much problem with that. I liked Azura's character but Snow's character was confusing for me. One minute she is vulnerable and the other minute either she is throwing tantrum about not having any friend or talking dirty to Azura
It felt like she was continuously stuttering and being weak.
DNF at 25%
I got an arc of this book on Netgalley and was going to try and finish this even though i knew from page one that the writing would not work for me.
Still couldn’t do it in the end it was just really bad in my
opinion. The sentences didn’t flow nicely and the plot or characters weren’t interesting enough for me to keep reading.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a chance to read and review this book!
Uh… that was different. I liked it but also I didn’t. I felt like it was doing too much. You got magic, fae, pixies, Belle (yes, from Beauty & the Beast), Maleficent, oh and the beast makes an appearance. Idek what was happening. Some parts I felt had too much detail, while other parts could have used more detail or some additional explanation. I’m still wondering how the pixie’s merged with Snow. No explanation on how or why just BAM Snow now has 7 pixies in her head. The FF wasn’t expected, but I was totally here for it! There is a HEA type ending which was nice. Overall a decent read!
