As one who has had the pleasure of dining at their restaurant in the tight knit small-town of Fort Jones I thoroughly enjoyed reading this cookbook. The recipes were delicious and definitely gave you a feel for ranch life. I though it was a very cohesive book and was a great sequel to her original cookbook.

Unfortunately I don’t see this as being a big seller outside of the USA market.
The meal options and ingredients were heavily directed to the American market and are not always readily available outside that country,

The cookbook is gorgeous to look at but I could not see myself using any of the recipes.

Five Marys Family Style: Recipes and Traditions from the Ranch is the second excellent cookbook from Mary Heffernan who includes recipes from her entire family which includes four daughters, all named Mary, as well as herself and her husband Brian. This cookbook includes 17 menus that reflect the ranch lifestyle. The recipes are written in the traditional manner and are easy to follow. What is most important, however, is that the recipes are very appealing. There is a menu for every hostess who wants to have guests for dinner not only for special occasions and holidays, but anytime.

This cookbook includes beautiful photographs, not only of the mouthwatering dishes, but also the family (adorable daughters, animals, ranch scenery, and other fun subjects) ranch; there are vignettes and stories of life on the ranch, which makes this cookbook one that can be read while curled up in a corner. It is well-written and interesting.

What’s nice about this cookbook is that the menus are not only doable, but the dishes go together well, so it takes the task of finding side dishes or desserts to go with the main dish. The main dishes are not too fancy so everyone will like them, especially the cook because they are easy to prepare. This is a fun cookbook to add to a first-rate cookbook collection. It’s a fun one to cook from.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

An excellent cookbook for those of us that like the Pioneer Woman's recipes. Ranch style living does away with the frills in exchange for a good, nutritious meal that will keep everyone healthy and happy. Ive tried many of the recipes from their first cookbook so was excited to see another. This one shares recipes and ideas for family gatherings, holiday or not, you still have to feed the crew.

Easy to follow recipes that produce excellent results, even for beginner cooks, and use everyday pantry items. No reason to keep extra ingredients for one recipe. The best thing you can do for yourself is open the book to any page and start cooking.

The Five Marys Family Style cookbook is like going to the ranch and spending the day with the family. There is so much family tradition and beloved recipes included in this book that you get a true sense of Mary's heritage and who she is, plus a look at how she got to where she is now. I loved the many pictures that are included, they seem authentic and exemplary of the content in the book. I love when I can look at a recipe in a cookbook and see a picture of what it is supposed to (hopefully when I’m done with it) look like.

The layout is different from a normal cookbook but I like it, it works with the content delivered. The book is sectioned into the 4 seasons, and then special recipes and notes for the holidays in those seasons. There are not only recipes for food but also for décor and crafts, which is so cool! The chapters have family stories woven throughout which makes it very interesting and connects you to their family and why they do what they do. There is a small section on 10 different things you can do with ground beef, kind of a quick guide. I thought this was brilliant and something that anyone who cooks would appreciate. The only downside to this book is that I feel like some of the recipes are things only someone who lives on a ranch that raises meat would cook, the ingredients would either be too hard to find or too expensive for the everyday person. But there is more than enough to make up for that in the rest of the book.

Five Marys Family Style is a lovely and well photographed style/inspiration guide with recipes by Mary Heffernan. Released 27th Sept 2022 by Sasquatch Books, it's 336 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook formats.

This is a lovely book, lavishly illustrated and full of good food, well prepared and presented. There are lots of photos from the Heffernan family's celebrations along with their ranch and surroundings. The book is arranged around seasonal celebrations which are further divided into 13 menus with all the trimmings. There are traditional holiday celebrations and recipes (Christmas, Easter, etc) as well as more informal entertaining and fun gatherings (Fiesta Friday, and a rodeo picnic).

Ingredient measurements are supplied in imperial (American) measurements only. Descriptions are contained in the header for each recipe. The nutritional information is not included. Extra tips or recipe alternatives are listed in headers with the recipe descriptions. The recipes themselves are beautifully finished with lots of nice unexpected juxtapositions of flavor and texture, for example sheet-pan pork tenderloin served with delicata squash, kale and Brussels sprouts (!?) - amazing and delicious. Many of the recipes are meat heavy, it's a ranch cookbook. There are a significant number of meat-free recipes however, and the overall quality of the writing and neat and hearty fusion style of the foods will allow vegetarians a surprising amount of use for the recipes in the book - notably all of the sauces, condiments, dressings, marinades, and other flavor enhancers (and there are a pile of them) can be adapted to meat-free uses.

The production values are top notch, and yes, the book features their "instagram perfect" family (which few of us can possibly achieve), however, it's honestly written with such warmth and candor that I found myself admiring them going for their dreams and raising their lovely family in a gorgeous rural setting. Serving suggestions for the dishes are beautifully presented and appropriate.

Five stars. Definitely an inspirational book full of useful unfussy full menus and good food to share with loved ones and friends.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Beautiful photos to showcase their life on the ranch. Very unique layout. I didn't try the recipes yet, but they look like everyday recipes that aren't too difficult.

I love following Mary Heffernan and her family on instagram and enjoyed Five Marys Family Style even more than her previous cookbook. The book is more than just a cookbook - it reads like a labor of love and is filled with hearty family recipes and stories of family traditions that will feed your family as well as your soul. Highly recommend!

I really like this cookbook. She provides recipes for 17 full meals, for all four seasons and for occasions ranging from birthdays to taco Tuesday. The recipes are meat based as she lives and owns a working ranch. They aren’t the simplest recipes, but I’m looking forward to preparing a number of the meals for my family. There are some fun looking crafts included in each section too.

Right after I requested this book for review, my doctor gave me an extremely strict diet to follow, so I wasn't able to try any of the recipes and am only reviewing this as how it appears. (I do plan to make some of the granola in this cookbook, but haven't yet).
The photography accompanying the recipes is beautiful. Pictures of life on the farm add a personal touch to the book. As a mom of four feeding six people a night, I really appreciate the serving sizes of the dishes - definitely enough food will be made for a larger crew. There are several "full menu" sections, giving the reader the chance to put together a party without wondering if mains/sides/appetizers/drinks will go together. Five Marys Family Style is also divided by season, and I love cookbooks like that. Gives the reader a chance to lean into seasonal produce and flavors.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing a free copy for review.

Wow! Sometimes the sequel outshines the original, and this is true here! I liked Five Mary's first cookbook, which I browsed through at a big box store and didn't feel the need to purchase. But I love this second book: Five Marys Family Style. This one, I'm purchasing. I love that it is organized by seasonal family gathering, and includes cocktails, desserts and crafts to round out the occasion. The first book was very meat-heavy, which makes sense as Five Marys is an incredible ranch in California. I like the concept, and I follow them on social media, but I'm not a huge meat eater at the end of the day. A good piece of meat might be a feature of a big holiday meal or special occasion, but in my family its not the centerpiece. So I like how this book creates a sense of celebration that includes meat but isn't all about meat. Everything in here is delicious and accessible, and the crafts are easy and timely.

So, first off I just want to say I want to look like and be Mary on the cover of this cookbook. Her outfit, her hair, her hat, and everything else is flawless. This one has you feeling all of the down to earth, cozy vibes, with categories such as “Little House Dinner”, “Snow Day Dinner”, “Fireside Feast”, “Camp Opener Cookout”, “River Float Burger Bar”, and more – while also gearing you up for the bigger events, such as Christmas and Easter and other holiday dinners. This one has so much variety and is perfect for so many occasions and is the perfect feel and vibe for the Yellowstone lover in all of us. My personal favorites? Warm Ricotta Dip with Olives and Lemons, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Lamb Ravioli, Perfect Wild Rice, Carousel Angel Food Birthday Cake, Spicy Corn Salad, Hot Spiced Wine Cocktails, and more!

Five Marys Family Style
Recipes and Traditions from the Ranch
Author: Mary Heffernan

eARC & Cookbook Review
Publish Date: September 27, 2022

My rating: 5/5 ⭐️

Following her first cookbook, Five Marys Ranch Raised, Mary Heffernan is back with another standout! In this one, Heffernan reveals family life on the ranch through their shared meals, traditions, and crafts.

This truly was a beautiful and artistic cookbook. From the introduction to the end, it was filled with delicious recipes, warming stories, and fantastic images. I personally loved how it was broken up by seasons, really showing how versatile this cookbook could be.

It featured a ton of yummy recipes that I cannot wait to dive into. Some of my favorites were the Icebox Pull-Apart Rolls, Pumpkin Cheesecake, and Our Family’s Lamb Ravioli. The recipes were easy to follow and featured ingredients that are easy to find at most grocery stores. On top of that, the food images were well staged and photographed.

As mentioned before, this was more than just a cookbook. It featured seasonal crafts, ranch traditions, and cocktail recipes! I loved getting to read about their ranch traditions and see what seasonal crafts they make. The addition of the cocktails was genius! Again, it was all broken out by season, giving readers and home cooks inspiration throughout the year.

I have said it a lot in his review, but this cookbook truly was beautiful! The recipes, traditions, and pictures were so well done. I cannot wait to pick up a hard copy of this book.

Thank you Net Galley, Sasquatch Books, and the author for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
