Mary Downing Hahn was scaring me decades ago, when I was just a very young horror geek. I'm not saying that the illustrations were any scarier than what my brain was able to supply way back when, but it was neat to revisit this story in a new and gorgeously-illustrated way.
It’s funny, because the horror genre is one I delve into very infrequently. I don’t generally look for stories that are seeking to scare or explore themes this dark. Wait Till Helen Comes was good. It’s also not something I can reasonably see myself reading frequently or recommending to the vast majority of my students.
In that regard, though, I don’t think this book is really meant for children for the most part. For young adult readers, perhaps, and very specifically those who have had experience with these kinds of stories and who enjoy the genre itself, this could be a really phenomenal book for them to pick up. I appreciated the way its themes were handled, the conversation about newly formed families and the ways that step siblings have to adapt, and the entire backstory surrounding Helen.
I may one day pick up this book again because it truly was a good story. The artwork was phenomenal and I genuinely felt attached to the characters. I felt for them, I worried for them, I hoped for them. I was scared for them.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.</i.>
I have read both versions of this texts and I loved the regular text. This made the book accessible to so many more in my classroom. The illustrations made this even scarier somehow. Visual learners who love scary books will love this book. I'd love to see more of Mary Downing Hahn's scary stories adapted into graphic versions. She is a marvelous writer.
Not a fan. The graphics were cool and the cover is incredible, but I wasn't a huge fan of the overall storyline and plot. It was ok! Just not my favorite,
4 stars for gorgeous illustrations~
This graphic novel of Wait Till Helen Comes is beautifully illustrated. I loved the color scheme, darkness and depth it has. This was a creepy and immersive graphic novel, definitely recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins Children's Books, Clarion Books for providing a digital ARC for review!
This update to the classic children's horror story will be sure to entice even your most reluctant reader to engage in texts. The visuals add to the story, enhancing the spooky feeling with a gloomy and eerie color palette. We plan to buy 2 copies for our library, because it will surely fly off the shelves!
4 stars. Thank you Netgalley for the arc. Wait Till Helen Comes has been a super popular book with my students and I foresee the Graphic Novel being even more popular. It follows the original story but having the illustrations enhances the experience.
In this graphic novel rendition, spooky illustrations add to the haunting story of young Helen. A lonely child ghost desperate for a friend. Middle grade graphic novel fans will eat this one right up!
This is a great graphic novel adaptation of a great middle grade horror novel. I thought that this was creepy and well portrayed using the graphic novel format. I would definitely purchase this for my library as my students are always looking for accessible horror books for all reading levels. Creating the graphic novel form of this story will definitely breathe new life into the story and preserve it for future audiences.
Oh, nostalgia! Like so many others, Wait Till Helen Comes was one of those beloved books of elementary school, the book that set me up to be fascinated with abandoned buildings and locket's contents, had fantasies about finding stories on microfiche in the library that would lead to unveiling some hundreds-year old mystery. This was incredibly well adapted; those pictures were so close to how I imagined then when I was a kid.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fantastically creepy graphic novel version of a classic middle grade horror story. While these tales are not for me, I appreciate having well-crafted, genuinely scary stories for kids who like this kind of story.
Mary Downing Hahn is a household name for those that love middle-grade spooky titles. This title is no different and having it in a graphic novel format brought raised the spooky factor to a new level. Highly recommend to readers who love to be a little frightened.
Spooky but not too scary, this is a good middle grade horror story. The art is lovely, and the story is interesting, though infuriating most of the way through. It is only infuriating though because it is so well done, and the reader feels the injustice of the way Molly is being treated. The resolution is satisfying, however, and it ends up being a lovely family story. Recommended for libraries where middle grade horror is appreciated.
Special thanks to HarperCollins Children's Books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Mary Downing Hahn was one of my all-time favorite authors in elementary school. Re-reading this book in comic form as an adult, I was hoping that I would still enjoy the story, but remained open-minded.
I am pleased to say that not only was this book amazing, but it was better than I remembered (it clearly stood the test of time). Not only was the story engaging, but the artwork was incredibly well done and translated beautifully into a comic book form.
One of my largest problems with reading comic books given to me through NetGalley are that they are clearly meant to be paperback and therefore it is incredibly frustrating to read them on a phone/tablet. I am pleased to say that this book had no issues being read through an app, a huge plus in my book.
I would highly recommend this book and am so happy to have read it. Now I am waiting for a comic book of All the Lovely Bad Ones (my favorite Mary Downing Hahn book)!
Wait till Helen comes is a modern classic that came out when I was still in middle school. I can remember us handing it around going “You have to read this” and read it I did. I was excited to see that these books are being made into graphic novels and enticing a whole new batch of kids into the dark and stormy world of Mary Downing Hahn. This story works much better than her novel “Took” in graphic novel. I’m not the biggest fan of the artwork. It seems a bit old-fashioned but overall, it works. While the graphic novel is wordy and heavy on the dialogue, the story is conveyed in such a way that you want to keep turning the pages I think the graphic novel is good, but the original book is better.
Wait Till Helen Comes Graphic Novel is perfect for middle grade mystery/suspense lovers. The illustrations really add to the spookiness of the story.
Great graphic novel adaptation of a novel that many kids still love to read. This will bring a whole new group of readers to Mary Downing Hahn!
First, I’d like to say that I haven’t read the original novel this adaptation is based off of. The cover really drew me into reading this. I’ve heard good things about the author and thought I’d give a graphic novel a try because my daughter likes them so much. This one didn’t disappoint! I knocked off a star because of some frustrating aspects in the family dynamic and dialogue. To be honest, I probably would have given it 5 stars if I was younger, which is the targeted audience. The illustrations were amazing and the story had me engaged and interested. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital review copy in exchange for my honest review.
This was so good! Heather and Helen were so creepy throughout the whole thing. I really loved the artwork - it was so detailed but it didn't get bogged down by all of those details. This was a fantastic spooky story with a mix of family drama thrown in.
Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollin's Children's Books for providing me with an advanced copy.

𝙒𝙖𝙞𝙩 𝙏𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙣 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨 by Mary Downing Hahn was one of my absolute favorite books when I was in middle school. I know, total shocker but believe it or not, I was a major spooky book reader when I was a tween/teen.
So when I saw that a graphic novel adaptation was being released, I immediately knew it was going to be a must read.
y'all... I don't know what happened to me but I am seriously the biggest scaredy cat ever! I loved loved loved this book years ago and now? Now it completely freaked me out and I almost couldn't finish it LOL I am most definitely not a spooky book person anymore but that didn't stop me from reading this one.
This adaptation is so incredibly well done, the artwork is stunning and does an exceptional job bringing the story to life through the graphics. The artwork definitely gives the story a more spooky vibe!
I love that this spooky tale is adapted into a graphic novel, not only is it introducing a great book from years ago to an entirely new generation but also provides a fun option for reluctant readers.
While the original will always be my favorite, I highly recommend this graphic novel. Perfect for middle grade and up who love creepy, spooky reads.
