I am not familiar with the original version of Mary Downing Hahn's #WaitTillHelenComes, so I can't speak to how well the graphic novel version compares to the original. However Hahn's books are popular in my school library, so I was interested in reading this graphic novel. It follows a mixed marriage family where two siblings save their step-sibling from a vengeful ghost after the family moves out to the country. There is a good mix of horror and suspense elements; the visual elements are easy to read and match up well with the text. At times there might be a little too much text for more reluctant readers, but overall the story is compelling and will be a good fit for middle school and some high school readers. Thank you to #NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC. I look forward to buying a copy for our library.
It's been a long time since I read the regular novel version of this book. As far as I can remember, the graphic novel is an accurate depiction of the novel. A blended family moves to the country into an old church. The youngest girl, Heather, makes friends with a vengeful ghost named Helen, but no one believes except the older girl, Molly. Helen wants Heather to be with her forever so she'll never be lonely again. Will Heather succumb or will she stay in the land of the living?
Wait Till Helen Comes is a graphic novel adaptation of the story of the same name by Mary Downing Hahn. I can't say I've read the original story, but it does follow along many of the quintessential horror tropes, so it'll probably feel familiar to you as it did to me.
There's a lot to like here - the artwork is crisp, the story flows well, the character designs are great. It's clear that the folks who worked on this are true professionals. My one complaint - and it's minor - is that there is a lot of text on every page. This makes sense as it's based on an actual story, but it can be a lot to take in all at once, especially when there are no episodes or chapters to provide a reading break for your eyes.
Overall, I think this is a great horror graphic novel for those who either love the original story; are just dipping their toes in the water of the genre; or who want a polished, self-contained read.
Thank you to Clarion Books and NetGalley for providing a copy for review.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel. Blended family Molly, Michael and Heather move with their family to the country next to a graveyard. No matter how much Michael and Molly try to befriend Heather she gets them into trouble making up lies about how they treat her and it’s causing problems for their mom and stepdad. She befriends a ghost her age only she can see and warns Michael and Molly the ghost will hurt them.
Clean and wonderfully drawn graphics, a scary plot that’s perfect make this a standout graphic novel. Although it’s touted as a YA I think it easily crosses over to adults as well.
