The Girl with the Dragonfruit Tattoo
by Carrie Doyle
3 stars
The Girl with the Dragonfruit Tattoo is a cozy mystery set on a tropical island. Plum Lockheart is at it again trying to solve a murder after a waitress dies.
This adventure takes Plum off to sea on a yacht with some very wealthy and deceiving people. Plum has to figure out who did it and what their motive was.
I didn't know this was the 3rd book in the series, I want to check the other two out to see if it helps bring it all together. This story can be read as a stand-alone it does work but if you are reading the series, it might just flow better. I wasn't that big a fan of Plum. She just gave off a way about her that I can't fully describe, I love cozy mysteries, but I might just be tapped out of them right now.
the story was good, but some things just fell away and got pushed out. Like the phone call plum got from her boyfriend's ex, What happened why didn't plum demand answers she was strict and not afraid of getting her hands dirty but in her love life, she just went with the flow and didn't want to push. Well, sometimes woman Ya got to push. Overall, I would read the first two but maybe at a later time, not one I will jump to buy.
Thank you, Net Galley, and Poisoned Pen Press for the eARC for an honest review
This is book three of the series, but first book for me in this fun cozy Murder mystery. By Carrie Doyle. Set on a yacht, Plum’s sleuthing skills is needed when one of the yacht servers - a girl with a dragonfruit tattoo washes up dead, quickly trouble sets in Paraiso.
I enjoyed this one for a quick fun read reminiscent of old style Murder mysteries.
In book three of Carrie Doyle's Trouble in Paradise cozy mystery series, we find Plum reunited with an old friend and traveling on the yacht of a famous rapper with even more rich and famous guests. But when a steward turns up dead and the police suspect foul play, Plum is thrown into the middle of the investigation. It's hard to figure out who the murderer is when everyone on board has secrets (and a bad attitude)...
One of the things I first loved about this series was Plum. She's a unique heroine with a take-no-prisoners, brash attitude that felt different from your typical cozy heroines. But as we take on book three, I wonder if what I used to love about Plum has become grating. She seems a little too oblivious at times, and all the characters around her see SO terrible, I wonder if in it's in effort to make her seem not quite so bad? Pretty much no one in this book was likable, which is not necessary for an entertaining read, but it did make it hard to care about the murder. The best parts of this book were the yacht location, which introduced a fun new element and cast of characters, and was a smart choice by the author.

4 stars - 7/10
So poorly written that it was a chore to finish; I have nothing good to say about this book. The storyline was almost non-existent and the characters were one-dimensional, Do yourself a favor and give it a pass
I occasionally like cozies but approach them with care, as I find many of them silly or reductive. But this one was a lot of fun! It’s the third in the series and I didn’t feel like I had missed anything or become confused by diving in at this book. The characters and setting are a lot of fun. I would definitely read this author again.
An entertaining cozy mystery. Carrie Doyle made it easy to picture all the characters. Many seeming quite similar to real famous individuals. Clever mystery that kept me guessing until the big reveal. What a hoot! Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.
This is book 3 in the Trouble in Paradise series! Even though I’ve read the first two, it could easily be read as a standalone. And I love the colors on this cover, so bright and summery!
Another fun mystery with Plum! Most of it is really spent on the yacht trying to solve the murder. So we didn’t get to see much of Plum with business, or even with Juan Kevin. We get small parts of her relationship with him but not a ton.
On the yacht, everyone is a suspect and no one is super likeable.. it’s a bunch of drama with the rich and famous. Plum solved it in a way that had Agatha Christie vibes so I loved that final reveal towards the end when figuring out the murderer. Go Plum!
Thanks to the publisher & netgalley for the eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a fun cozy murder mystery! This is book 3 in the series but feel free to read as a stand alone. This is the first book I’ve read in the series and I wasn’t lost at all. There are a few references to the murders Plum solves in the previous books but this book made perfect sense as a stand alone.
Read this book for a cozy murder mystery. A great read for traveling, vacation, or if you need something quick to read.
Thank you NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the digital ARC of “The Girl with the Dragonfruit Tattoo”.
Who killed Lysette? The waitress on the yacht told our intrepid amateur detective Plum that she wanted to talk to her about murders- and then she's murdered too! Plum, rather than work on her own business on Paraiso, boards the yacht with the acquiescence of the police chief to uncover the villain. What a bunch of awful people! Plum sorts through and, in classic cozy fashion dodges threats to find the truth. I missed the last book making this more or less a standalone and it was fine that way. That said, I would have preferred more on land and less ni the yacht (and more of Plum's romantic interest). Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. For cozy fans.
The Girl with the Dragonfruit Tattoo is an cozy mystery set in a tropical location. Plum Lockheart is thriving on the Island of Paraiso as her Villa rental agency is taking off. It isn't long before she become drawn into another murder, though. When a employee on a luxury yacht turns up dead, Plum is asked to go undercover to see if she can determine what happened. This is a easy to read cozy mystery which would be a perfect book to read at the beach. Although the story is, at times, far fetched, I enjoyed plot and the wide variety of potential suspects. Because the story takes place almost exclusively on the luxury yacht, we spend a lot of time getting to know the secrets and lies of the privileged guest and the crew. If you have seen the reality show Below Deck, then this is the feel of life on the Yacht. As usual, Plum asks some very pointed questions and isn't afraid to snoop around. The ending is satisfying and the red herrings and twists kept me changing my mind as to who was guilty.
Thank you NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
This is the author's 3rd book in this series and my first book by this author.. Before I get to the review I'd like to say that the books cover is awesome! One of the recent best! Plum is loving the island life ; fruit filled beverages, salty air and evening sunsets and then a body washes ashore by her hotel and her sleuthing skills are once again put to use.
The characters are great with 64 year old Lucia is my favorite. Most of the story takes board a yacht which gives a ocean feeling. It's a solid mystery with an Agatha Christie style ending which I liked a lot. I will be going back to check out the first two in the series. Thanks to NetGalley, Poisoned Pen Press and the author for the opportunity to read and review this book which publishes on 1/31/23
Thank you Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for granting me this eARC!
Carrie Doyle- how do you do it?? This series just keeps getting better and better! I am a complete fan of Plum and her adventures in Paraiso. "The Girl with the Dragonfruit Tattoo" was especially fun due to the fact that majority of the story took place on a yacht with a cast of suspicious, narsassitic and slightly shady characters (some more than others). I love a good locked room mystery, in this case a locked boat mystery and Doyle did not disappoint in keeping the action flowing throughout. I absolutely suspected everyone on the boat, besides Plum of course, at least once over the course of the book. The twist at the end will keep readers on their toes and wanting to read more.
Can't wait to have more adventures in Paraiso with Plum, Juan Kevin and Lucia!
Upon realizing that this was a series, I understood a bit better why it feels a little unmoored to me as the reader. I enjoyed the first few chapters and was ready to embark on the journey with Plum and crew, but while the cover and the premise were intriguing to me, unfortunately this book fell flat. I did not feel connected to any of the characters, and the story required a lot of suspension of belief (which, is sometimes fine, but in this case did not pay off/was not intriguing enough to make up for it). I couldn't get past the fact that she as a travel agent was so unqualified to partake in a formal investigation of death yet was recruited by police to do so, and from there it lost me. Overall I think there is potential for great stories from this author, but unfortunately this one missed the mark for me.
This was exactly what I expected. A light, easy and cozy read. Easy to digest. But fairly predictable.
Plum Lockheart is back and at it again. This time helping to solve the mystery of the death of a server girl on one of the yachts docked off the coast of Paraiso. Her life is going well. Having just opened her own mansion rental company, Plum Lockheart Luxury Retreats, together with her friend, Lucia. Even her love life is going well as things are heating up with Juan Kevin, a local detective. One night she is invited by an old friend, Ellen out to the yacht her and her husband are on that is owned by a famous music executive.
The captain of the Paraiso police department asks Plum, who has helped solve a few other murders, to help in the case of the dead server, Lysette, who worked on the yacht owned by the music executive. She goes undercover on the boat to flush out who might be responsible for her death. Things really heat up once she's on the boat. Everyone is a suspect and yet no one is. There weren't very many clues to lead you to who it might be. Honestly, I liked this. I was surprised by the ending and definitely want more from this series. Especially between Juan Keving and Plum.
Overall, this is a great series. This book in particular has great characters even though none of them are likeable. None of them. Not one of the members of the yacht are likeable. From cheating husbands to one lying about his life, to a diva that no one can stand. However, that is to me, good writing. The author made the characters so unlikeable; you want them to be the murderers. Of the three in this series, this one was a little on the weak side, but I still enjoyed it and look forward to more. I received this book free from NetGalley for an honest review.
HYSTERICAL novel. The girl with the dragonfruit tattoo is a who-dun-it set in a tropical paradise! While the plot and story line were solid, it was the authors humor and commentary that truly took this novel to the next level! Loved it, will be posting review about it soon on my Instagram (if youcan read this)!
Thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for an advanced electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Plum has been reinventing herself on her new island home, but when a body washes up dead, she's called in to help figure out what happened. Plum must go undercover on a yacht to figure out who killed the staff member, and why... and try not to get killed in the process.
The story was interesting enough, but it didn't feel like anything special. The big reveal at the end felt like an episode of Scooby-Doo. Also, Plum’s love life felt weird... almost childish in how it was portrayed? Just not a fan.
CW: death
This is the third book of the Trouble in Paradise series and since I enjoyed reading the previous books, I requested for the third book. However, in my opinion, having read her two previous books, this was a bit of a disappointment to me and not as good as the previous two books. However, it wasn't bad either.
When a girl with a dragonfruit tattoo was murdered, the police ask Plum to take up on the invite to board on the yatch. She meets her friend Ellen, and her husband Joel who seems to be flirting with an upcoming actress India and there were others such as Nashelle, Harris, Robert and Suki.
In my opinion, the romance between Plum and Juan Kevin was interesting but then the real story actually started after about 30% of the book. The story wasn't as interesting but it wasn't boring either. There were so many short sides where it was left unanswered such as what happened to Juan's ex wife Victoria the rivarly between Carmen and Alexander and Plum's business. Things got interested towards the end, which is where finally my interest was piqued. Nonetheless, there were some funny parts in the book that will make you laugh out loud and the characters are also interesting as well.
Overall, this book worth 3 stars. Not as good as the previous books but not bad either.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Poisoned Pen press for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
This is a new to me author and I have to say I am looking forward to reading more by this author! I loved this book
In the third Trouble in Paradise novel, Plum is assigned by island police to go on a private yacht excursion with rich and famous movie producers, music artists, and actors. All the guests have long back stories that are revealed when one of the yacht's crew members is found dead. An interesting side story is Plum's ship to land blossoming romance with Juan Kevin, who is going through his own divorce drama. The novel can be read as a stand alone, but it is probably best to begin with book one: It Takes Two to Mango (2021).
