Thank you to author and publisher for an eARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It was an okay read wasn’t the best but that’s just my opinion. World building could have been a lot better and I found I didn’t connect with the characters overall an okay read though.
It was a cute vampire read. I loved Sal, her strenght and selflessness. I loved Kade from the biggining, hes cruel, arrogant, and cocky. I loved the way he started to care for Sal and hbow he showed it. Slow burn its always a point in my book and i loved it. Even though i said that and it was in general a good book, it didnt grip me. I felt it a bit sl'ow at times, and some times had to force myself to continue.. other than that its good. what might not be for me, might be for other people.
I received a copy of Hellfire and Honey by A. N. Payton from NetGalley. The blurb of the book intrigued me, and I was so glad that my request for it got accepted. This fantasy romance about witches and vampires immediately fascinated me. Hellfire and Honey follows the story of a witch princess Sal and vampire king Kadence.
Sal’s parents suddenly disappeared one night, with half of the witch army leaving Sal as the heir to the throne. She is unpopular amongst the court members and even her people. There is a war going on between witches and vampires for decades. Sal realizes that it is a losing battle, and to save her people and her kingdom, she makes the difficult decision to surrender herself. The king of the vampires Kadence accepts her surrender, but it comes with terms and conditions. Their kingdoms are to be united, and Sal will become the queen of the witches, but she has to work under Kadence’s approval.
The plot of the novel is simple enough. Sal agrees to the terms put forth by Kadence to end the bloodshed between the witches and vampires. Sal doesn’t know why her parents left, and it is a wound that is still fresh. Kadence also has issues, and both of them are guarded. Sal is disliked by most people, and her council yet she puts her duties first. There is an instant spark between Sal and Kadence. It takes time for them to build trust and a rapport between them, which is done realistically. When they have no choice but to work together to fight a bigger threat; their relationship moves further. Sal’s ex-fiancé is a character, that I didn’t like, but all the others are pretty well written.
I enjoyed reading Hellfire and Honey b A. N. Payton. The plot, characters, and setting are good; it keeps you hooked. The pace of the story is good from beginning to end, with never dull moments in between. I was expecting it to be good, and it exceeded my expectations. I hope there are more books in the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC. This is my honest review.
This wasn't the book for me. The world building needed more detail. Plus, I'm not a huge romance fan and this book didn't change my mind.
I really enjoyed the characters in this book, but unfortunately the world building could have used some more work. There were times when I was just completely taken out of the story because the world just wasn't developed enough. Overall, I liked the story and I'll probably check out the second book.
Thank you to the Author and publisher for this advanced copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This book title grabbed me the book not so much. It was an okay read but I don't see how its going to be a multiple book series. I really think there is some potential but this is a skip on reread for me.
While this book took me a while to get into it, I rather enjoyed it in the end. Sal and Kadencee were great characters and I loved the tension between them. Supporting characters Xavier and Rayhan we're fantastic too.
While I am always down for witch and vampire romance, and no stranger to sweeping fantasy world's, the world building wasn't as fleshed out as I would have liked for a more solid foundation of a world embroiled in a 200 year war. The plot (including the big twist) was predictable.
This was an overall good book I enjoyed reading despite my slow start. Once I got into the story I looked forward to reading more to watch the relationship burn between Kadence and Sal.
I liked quite a bit of this book but some points let it down a bit. I liked the chemistry between the leads and I thought that they had an interesting backstory. However, I did not think the progression of their relationship was 100% believable, it went from hate to lust real quick and everyone forgave each other so easily. It was strange since both sides did awful things to each other before they came to a mutual agreement. Nonetheless, I liked the characters and thought it was a fun read though lacking some emotional depth.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
WOW! I loved this book! I knew just by the title and description that this would be right up my alley and oh how right I was! I really loved the slow-burn romance and the fact that there was so much plot!!! I expected this plot to be romance centric but it was really action packed and had me reading this book at lightning pace to see what happens next. I fell is love with these characters, especially Sal, she has my heart. She is so badass and reminds me a bit of Jude from The Folk of Air trilogy. LOVED this book and highly recommend.
I received this arc free from the publisher and my opinions are not influenced in any way.
I received this e-Arc via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a really interesting story with it starting off at the end of a war battle between the vampires and the witches. Princess Sal who was left in charge of ruling the witch kingdom after her parents (the King and Queen) left her one day without any explanation.
After a centuries long battle she chooses to surrender to the vampire king Kadence knowing it was a losing battle. They make an agreement and she binds her magic until he can trust her. They learn to work together and rule the kingdom as a united front even if they don't see eye to eye behind closed doors. Kadence learns the ins and outs of Sal's kingdom and the vampires seem to fit right in even though everyone was hesitant at first.
There is a greater evil and they all come together to conquer it and along the way Kadence and Sal grow together. This is a slow-burn enemies to lovers story written well and I'm excited to see how the next book plays out.
This book really hooked me and I read it in one day. The characters were interesting, the romance was a well crafted slow burn of enemies to lovers, and the greater plot was engaging. I wish the differences between the witches and vampires had been explained in greater detail. There were subtle drops of information, but I am still not entirely sure what a vampires attributes are. I did really enjoy it and it was also nice to read a fantasy romance stand alone novel.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this read! I'm not a big vampire or romance person typically, but this one got me. The romance had a slow build and was very subtle. It did not overshadow the storyline and to me it didn't seem completely forced. It was an enemies to lovers that took it's time so it was a much more believable romance than I have read in the past. The main storyline was action packed, I just loved it. I can't wait to read more!
This had lots of potential to be a wonderful fantasy, enemies to lovers romance book.
The fantasy for me hit all the marks but the romance felt very rushed/forced just to fit with the genre.
Sal is the princess of one kingdom who has been at war with the vampire kingdom for 200 years. She surrenders herself making Kadence king of the vampires the king of her kingdom. The two learn to work together to allow their people a break from war. Things don’t go to plan when a demonic force threaten the new found peace of the kingdom.
Ultimately the pair find love triumphs hate and fall for each other by the end of the book.
As the story is only told from Sal’s point of view we only see one side of the story. I feel Kadence’s POV would allow the romance side of the book to reach greater depths and be more enjoyable for me.
Overall a good quick fantasy read but not one I would pick up solely for the romance
“ʏᴏᴜ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴍᴀᴋᴇ ɪᴛ ʙᴀᴄᴋ ᴛᴏ ᴍᴇ. ɪꜰ ʏᴏᴜ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴋɪʟʟ, ᴍᴀɪᴍ, ᴘᴏɪꜱᴏɴ, ʀᴜɴ — ɪ ᴅᴏɴ’ᴛ ᴄᴀʀᴇ. ɪ ᴄᴀɴ’ᴛ ʟᴇᴀᴅ ᴛʜᴇꜱᴇ ᴋɪɴɢᴅᴏᴍꜱ ʙʏ ᴍʏꜱᴇʟꜰ ᴀɴᴅ ɪ ᴅᴏɴ’ᴛ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ ᴅᴏ ɪᴛ ᴡɪᴛʜᴏᴜᴛ ʏᴏᴜ.”
Y’all. This book was absolutely insane in the best way possible. The rollercoaster of emotions I felt throughout this entire book (which can be read as a stand-alone) we’re indescribable. One minute I was frustrated as hell with one of the characters, and the next I was silently pleading the author not to hurt them. AN Payton made me fall in love with King Kadence and Princess Sal — when you put together a rumored ruthless scary vampire king, and a despised princess who’s kingdom was falling, naturally you can see the tropes that can be formed. This novel was action packed, and 100% reminded me of From Blood & Ash, and naturally A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire. If you’re a fan of Jennifer Armentrout and those two series, you are absolutely going to love this slow burn, enemies to lovers, action and thrilling packed book.
This arc was given to me courtesy of netgalley in exchange for a free, honest opinion.
sal stands out as a main character that’s both snarky and badass. far different from her, kaden is the cold, grumpy vampire guy. their relationship progression overtime is also very fun to read. though the story get underwhelming sometimes, not because it’s bad but because there wasn’t anything special or memorable about it. it wasn’t bad per se, but just, ordinary. i love their banter tho! i can see the potential Hellfire and Honey could actually make. interesting plot set up and the enemies-to-lovers pitch are just perfect.
Very inventive and could see how it would be entertaining for some, but wasn’t for me, couldn’t finish, but 3 stars, since I don’t know how it ended. Thanks for the ARC!
Doom your entire kingdom? Or surrender to the vampire king?
I love reading enemies to lovers books, and this story is one of my top favorites I have read in a while. I really enjoyed the vivid descriptions the author painted throughout the book. The romance developed incredibly well, especially considering the complicated, tangled past the hero and heroine had with one another. And the stakes kept piling up more and more, pulling me into the story with each page.
Kadence's push and pull within the budding romance really made sense for the story. I know others might not agree with it, but in my opinion, it was well done. His was a fragile heart surrounded by bars of steel, and I really liked watching how Sal dislodged one bar at a time.
This book had great romance scenes, incredible action, amazing characters, and vivid details. Definitely worth the read!
A fantasy where the Vampire and Witch armies face off against each other, Hellfire and Honey is pretty good. There is a slow burn romance and some solid world building, which kept me pretty interested in seeing how everything unfolded.
I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
First off let me thank the publisher and A.N. Payton for the opportunity to read this beautiful novel.
I really loved this novel! It’s been since I read From Blood and Ash that I’ve found a good vampire series that I’ve actually enjoyed!
Hellfire and Honey drops us straight in the middle of a war… witches vs vampires, to the death. That is until the princess of the witches parents abandon her and leave her with no choice but to do what’s right for her people. And what’s right for her people is surrender, surrender to the vampires, and the ruthless vampire king. Salvatore and Kadence couldn’t be more different from each other if they tried. Sal tries to lead her people through compassion and understand, while making sure her opinions and decisions are final. Kadence rules through intimidation and fear, with no backwards thought about how his people may feel about his rule. At least that’s what they chose believe about each other… but as their tentative peace is threatened and war once again looms on the horizon, perhaps they’ll learn their not so different after all.
This book hit all the right points for me! I loved Sal, even in her surrender she never becomes a simpering little girl. She holds her head high and makes decisions that benefit not only her people but her new vampiric people as well, even though not only do the vampires hate her, but most of her own people wish her dead as well. She stands tall in the face of humiliation as Kadence is cruel and at some points down right nasty to her. And when people needed her she was there for them even if they had done nothing but be cruel to her previously.
Kadence himself was a bit of a handful at first, he’s cruel and a bit to cocky for his own good. He rules with an iron fist and has no qualms about rubbing it in the faces of the witches that due to the surrender they’ve basically lost the war to those they despise the most. He almost seems to take pleasure in his cruelty, but then we start to see a softer side of him. A side of him that seems to care for his people, the witches, and even for Sal. A part of him that he has been forced to keep locked away so that he could rule a kingdom of vampires.
Overall, this was an amazing slow-burn vampire fantasy romance that really packs a punch. It gives readers everything they could ask for in a book, political intrigue, royalty, betrayal, vampires, witches, demons, war and let’s not forget the forever loved enemies-to-lovers romance. I’d say if you’re looking for another beautifully written book, to tickle all of your fantasy needs, then this is the book for you.
Rating: 3 stars
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!
This was a cute fantasy stand alone. Sal and Kadence are 2 rulers who are learning to rule together for the sake of their people after Kadence defeated Princess Sal’s kingdom after a long war. Despite their rocky beginnings, their romance was cute and the tension was insane. The amount of times things started to get spicy but then they got interrupted had me screaming. They were really edging us throughout this whole book.
Everything about this book was decent. The plot was alright, nothing too special. Everything was predictable. The world building could’ve been better. I was a little confused because I though this was a fantasy world but then they described a character to have Asian descent, so now idk if this book took place in the real world or in a fantasy world. The romance was also alright, nothing too special.
