A great read, full of tension and very gripping. I will definitely read more from the author based on this.
This one was enjoyable enough but I think that I prefer this authors childrens books. The plot was enjoyable and I liked the characterisation but it was nothing ground breaking.
As usual in my reviews, I will not rehash the plot (you'll find reviews like that out there already!)
I really enjoyed this book. It's a fast-paced novel that starts in Paris and moves to multiple locations (Oxford, Lebanon, and Snowdonia of all places!). From start to finish it's clear that there's much more to the dramatic events of Paris than meets the eye - and that various governments are keen to keep the truth under wraps. This is probably no surprise to anyone who follows politics and reads political history (where secrets are often revealed!) but the writing is compelling nonetheless.
The writing was spot on for me - the main characters are well written and retain their "humanity", in that they have strengths and weaknesses too - something that is often missing in thrillers.
I look forward to reading more by this author. With his background in the UK political scene (a former advisor to No. 10!) I'm sure he has much to base his stories on.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC. All opinions my own.
It’s no big secret that the political activity that’s reported by your favorite news source is really just the tip of the iceberg. Every day, agreements and alliances are made and broken without making headlines. In The Ambassador, author and former diplomat Tom Fletcher follows one man’s quest to fight through the politics to uncover the truth...

I like this spy thriller. It has the typical intrigue and international aspects, and complicated situations. It also includes diplomacy and conspiracy. I think this will be enjoyed by many thriller fans.
I really appreciate the free review copy for review!
Beautifully written with a great storyline and perfect characters. A political thriller that had me second guessing myself several times. Started out slow but during the middle the suspense builds. Thank you netgalley and Canelo for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.#netgalley #theambassador

First of all, thank you to NetGalley and Canelo for this ARC! This review is voluntarily written by me.
In general, this book is not really an easy read for me. I like how the story goes on how the protagonist embarked on his journey to solve the murder case and the situations that come after it. However, I can’t really feel the thrill of the story. For me, the story starts to become much more exciting in the second half of the book after the slower pace (for me) in the first part. I keep on reading because I really want to know what is the answer to the crime and the unraveled story behind it, but I am still feeling that something is missing from the book. I do like how the author describes some places and situations but I still felt that something is not enough. However, I do not know what it is or how to explain it.
Wow what a book. It was thrilling. I couldn’t put it down. Thank you netgalley for this arc it was a hoot and I loved it so much
This book sits comfortably alongside novels written by the likes of Robert Ludlum and Nelson Demille.
A modern day story written with political intrigue, intertwined with a murder mystery
It would have been five stars had it not seemed so rushed.
An interesting read, at times though I felt the read to be a bit convoluted with too many characters and jumps from Paris to London and back. Less a thriller and more an indictment of political affairs in general.
Pleasing moments also about a man knowing his role in diplomacy and his family, just wavers on occasion but nevertheless still a good read
What an incredible read! It had me on the edge of my seat, second guessing what i thought I knew. Highly unpredictable and highly satisfying. It is so intelligently written, which makes it impossible to put down!
Writing aside, i fell in LOVE with the cover. The vibrant colours really draw the eye! It will take centre stage on my shelf! The blurb doesnt give too much away, but perfectly sets up the story, and is intriguing enough to make you read it straight away!
I LOVED IT!!! Clever, beautifully written and entertaining. And, what is unusual in the mass market of contemporary domestic noir/psychological thrillers, characters you actually care about.
A murder at the British Embassy in Paris, an anarchist group releasing secrets that could ruin the careers of top brass across the world, and an Ambassador determined to get to the truth despite lack of support from his country and his allies....what more could you want?
This was Tom Fletcher's first foray into fiction and I hope it will not be his last. This story was expertly written, thoughtfully plotted, and gave us a glimpse of a world that usually only exists behind locked doors and high gates.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
My love of conspiracy theories, thrillers and politically motivated thrillers has been ignited by TOM. I would say I am crazy about this book and recommend that people go in blind into this book. I highly recommend this book to everyone that loves a good fast paced thriller.
A slow burning and gripping politica thriller that kept me hooked.
I liked the style of writing and the storytelling.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
An activist is murdered at the British Embassy in Paris but no one seems to want to investigate the death. In steps Ed Barnes, the British ambassador, determined to find out more.
I enjoyed this political thriller. The author, Tom Fletcher, brings his unique experience (as a policy advisor to no 10) to the story. The writing was good and the main character interesting. I would recommend this book.
I was keen to read Tom Fletcher’s fiction debut after listening to him talk about his career and experiences as a diplomat on a podcast. The idea that he’d be applying his skills to thriller was rather appealing, and The Ambassador delivers on expectations. It’s a morally complex modern thriller set in (hopefully) a somewhat exaggerated version of the British FCO.
Refreshingly there aren’t easy answers, everyone is fully painted in shades of grey and the resolution is satisfying without being trite. Hopefully Fletcher will have time for more fiction….
This was an excellent book. It had intrigue and mystery. and then it was just an all around good book. Would definitely recommend this book
British Embassy in Paris, gory murder of a wanted activist almost immediately out on social media, Governments dodging any issue they can, cyber terrorism and conspiracies. The book was well written with plenty of descriptions helping to immerse the reader in the story; the characters were also well defined with human frailty as well as honour. The problem was that the story just did not grab me - my fault not that of the author at all. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Tom Fletcher is novel, The Ambassador, starts out slowly but gradually picks up steam. The characters are convincing and well-structured as the book progresses. Told with foreign intrigue in the British Embassy in Paris, the plot involves the murder of a young human rights activist who had sought diplomatic refuge. An International thriller. Think LeCarre.
