Fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of the Tudor court of Henry VIII and his pursuit of Anne Boleyn. Thomasin’s parents were courtiers before she was born but they have long been away from London. They return as a family for the wedding of Thomasin’s sister and find themselves in the crosshairs of the dueling courts of Henry’s queen and his mistress. Beguiled by the glamour of court, the entertainment and excitement of the Boleyn faction, and the handsome young man who seems ever present at court, Thomasin finds herself in uncertain and dangerous territory. Intrigue, excess, games of politics and position, this book paints a dazzling picture of court and exposes the ruthless machinations of those at its center. It was quite effective to have a court outsider as the main POV.
Held my interest.
If you are like me and were bitten by the Tudor bug and are still infected, this will be the perfect book for you. Excellent research draws you back in time to Henry's court, where Thomasin must decide whether to marry for love or duty, all while Anne Boleyn grows more powerful. It was unputdownable, and I loved every second of it. I hope this author continues to write tudor novels.
Finally I get to this one. So sorry for the late review. What a fabulously engrossing read. Great characters and interesting plot. I was thoroughly entertained. Thank you netgalley and publisher for this arc in exchange of an honest review
I loved this, I love any Tudor read but I did like the blend of fact and fiction within this. By doing this and through introducing fictional, yet realistic characters, Licence offers a new perspective. I loved all the characters, both real and fictional, they all felt real and acted in ways I would expect. I am looking forward to reading the next book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sapere Books for an advance copy.
Oh my goodness!! This book was incredible. I felt like I was pulled back into 1528 reading this novel. The imagery was perfection and the details were historically accurate. I felt for Thomasina and loved reading from her point of view. The family wasn't my favorite, the sister was infuriating and it made me love Thomasina even more.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and I am about to start the second in this series and I can't wait
Thomasin Marwood is 17 and excited to visit the court of King Henry VIII. But everything has changed since her parents were last there. The Queen has been sidelined as Anne Boleyn's power increases. Thomasin needs to negotiate the political machinations of the court as well as romantic intrigues which threaten her honour...
Dangerous Lady is the first book in a series set in the Tudor era of the late 1520s. There is a mix of fictional characters as well as genuine figures from the age. I felt like I was immersed in the courtly life as well as the personal experiences of a teen coming of age.
Thomasin's sister Cecilia is set to marry at court and the sisters quickly find favour with both Queen Catherine and Anne Boleyn. Personal and political plotlines merge as Thomasin tries to survive in the dangerous court of Henry VIII. Forbidden love as well as courtly behaviour is of national importance in contrast to Thomasin's first personal experience of love and lust.
I have to confess that I adore the Tudor period so almost guzzled this book! I couldn't put it down and finished wthin a few hours, yet didn't want it to end. The author has done plenty of research and I felt that the characters behaved authentically. Thomasin is slightly impetuous and naive, unused to affairs of state and the heart. She is in danger due to her romantic relationships as well as her divided loyalties to the queen and the rising power of Anne Boleyn.
Dangerous Lady was a completely compelling book and a must for all Tudor fans!
A brilliant read and one I really enjoyed. The characters are loveable and varied, the plot is one that is engaging and medium paced. I found myself completely drawn into the story and enjoyed the writing style.
I love Amy License’s nonfiction, so I was looking forward to reading her fiction. Dangerous Lady does not disappoint. The story focuses on the courts between Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. It highlights the danger of being in a Tudor Court. The plot is pretty simple and is mostly a romance. Still, I recommend this novel for anyone interested in the Tudors!
This was an absorbing historical read. There is lots of twists and turns in the story to keep a reader hooked. Im looling forward to reading the next in tje series.
An magnificent treat from one of England's foremost specialists when it comes to the Tudors and their shenanigans.
A captivating novel full of unbelievable twists and turns and an impeccable cast of exquisitely drawned characters.
A really captivating look at Henry's first divorce and one of the most moving fictional portrait of his matrimonial problems with Katherine of Aragon I have ever enjoyed thanks to this magical fictional tapestry....
Ms Licence is a fabulous historian and a very talented wordsmith....
Many thanks to Netgalley and Sapere Books for this terrific ARC
Thoroughly enjoyable. I love reading about the Tudors and this was a treat. I love the intrigue of court, and Licence did a great job of capturing that and bringing it to life in this novel.
I truly enjoy everything Tudor. I liked that I was able to experience it from someone outside Henry and Anne. It makes it a fresh perspective and a different point of view. I read the entire book in a few hours. I couldn’t put it down. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and publishers for an arc. I will be reading more books by the author.
I'm a huge fan of Amy Licence's nonfiction works so was very intrigued to read a fiction book. The cover for this is beautiful, which is what caught my eye initially.
It comes as no surprise that the details of the Tudor world from the court, clothes and pastimes are exquisite, clearly Amy had used her knowledge to create a story where you can picture the beautiful dresses, gardens and dancing.
Descriptives aside, the story of Thomasin delves into the events and what life at court may have been like, especially for someone who had not been brought up there. The story is set at a time when loyalties were split between Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn which meant Thomasin walking on eggshells and being completely naive about others intentions.
There's definitely a twist in this book which I won't spoil for anyone but it was a surprise and works brilliantly.
There's some fabulous fictional characters featuring alongside individuals such as Henry VIII and the Boleyns. Cecilia is a character that I couldn't decide if I liked or not, whilst Thomasin and her father are likeable from the beginning. I also really liked the portrayal of Queen Catherine and was very happy with the ending of the story.
Rafe is the character I was wary of from the beginning but I did like Sir Giles who becomes a central figure in the story and I'm interested to see if he appears again in the future, I do hope so.
I eagerly look forward to more from Thomasin and her family and friends.
Amy does explain who is fictional in the story which may help those unfamiliar with the Tudor court but even if you are this is an enthralling story that I thoroughly enjoyed.
For anyone who loves historical fiction taking place around the court of Henry VIII, this provides an interesting insight. There were times that the main character was a bit too naive for my taste to have survived this environment. This is a fun read if you have a good understanding of Tudor history.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I love historical fiction and non-fiction and if you're are sucker for Tudor history, this book is for you. The atmosphere of the plot is amazing, the story telling cutting, reading the book is an immersive experience. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
This is a great book. If you love historical fiction you will love dangerous lady. The book focus on Thomasin Marwood and her family and how they navigate being in court for her eldest sister’s wedding. It has all the drama, passion and suspense to be a real page turner. It has. a variety of layers so you have something for everyone to enjoy. It give you just enough drama to be believable . The book is well written that you feel like you at court experience everything first hand. These book is a great start to an amazing series.
Quite an enjoyable read, though not my usual genre.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sapere Books for providing an advance review copy in exchange for this honest review.
It's been such a long time since I've read anything Tudor period related and this book, Dangerous Lady, has sparked a renewed interest in me.
I found Amy Licence's writing to be both engaging and atmospheric. I would definitely recommend her work to anyone with any interest in the Tudors, especially those that like seeing/experiencing that world through a fictional person's eyes (such as Thomasin).
Thank you NetGalley for the eARC. This book caught my interest because its a Tudor book but oh em gee i loved this story! I was so hooked that i didnt want it to end! Yes the story did not directly delve into the Tudor storyline but these characters had their own story to tell and i cannot wait for book 2!!!
This is a light historical romp through the Tudor court at the time of Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. It was well written and enjoyable. It wasn’t anything new but I enjoyed it none the less.
