Helltown by Casey Sherman
Hell Town is a true crime story about Tony Costa a young hippie during the 1960's who was a notorious serial killer in Cape Cod. Tony Costa oddly enough was a snitch for the local police department even though he was doing his own crime like drug theft and murder. This was a detail account of what happened during this time period and the stories behind the women who where murdered.
I was surprised to find out the other things that happened at the same time that took the heat a bit off of Tony Costa as being notorious serial killer. Matter of fact I did not even hear about him until this book. Charles Manson in California was committing crimes as well during the same time period and the media focused more on him then Tony Costa. Tony's murders where far worse then Charles Manson. The difference between the two is that Charles Manson looked liked a crazy lunatic and Tony Costa looked like the boy next door.
This book has been sitting with me since finishing it. I have been thinking about how crazy things happen to be during the 60's when drugs, sex and rock & roll. I was surprised to see how easy some people become followers of Tony Costa.
If you are a true crime reader this book would be for you it details so much parallels what was happening in the 60's that this serial killer did not get the notoriety that most do that kill in the way he did. The gruesome acts will sit with you and shock you. I will never understand the behavior to murder in the sick way he did was mind boggling.
Casey Sherman did a great job telling the story he wrote. I am always fascinated by the behavior of others how they act.
Thank you to Netgalley and RB Media for a free copy of this audio book for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Helltown was an interesting book. It was so far the best book I have read about Tony Costa. However I only gave it 3 stars because this was supposed to be a True Crime book, but there where too many fictional elements tossed in for my liking. That being said it was an enjoyable book and I'm looking forward to my friend finishing her copy so that we can discuss it.
A really great true crime book about Cape cod in the 1960s. I felt instantly transported to that time and place.
Very well researched and compelling, I almost forgot it was non-fiction at times.
I had t quit at about 50 percent. I think the story might have been interesting but I found myself drifting off and thinking about other things while listening to it. I am not sure if it was the writing or the narration but it felt dry and boring. I am leaning toward the author's style of writing as I felt the narrator had a clear voice that was easy to follow.
I love true crime but this one was definitely not for me.
I love true crime - so I was excited to listen to this audiobook - but unfortunately I did not like this book. Too many liberties taken by the author making it much too fictionalized. I almost didn't finish but honestly wish I hadn't because it didn't get any better as the book went on
