The Wayward Spy by Susan Ouellette is a suspenseful novel that deals with traitors in the CIA and Congress. I enjoyed it until the very end of the book, when it just stopped without a conclusion. Clearly there are more novels that follow , but I felt cheated by the way it ended.
I was given an ARC of this novel by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book was an awesome ride! I love a strong woman that takes no shit and that is what this book delivers! This book has a couple of twists that were pretty great but I did see the "bad guy" right from the start b/c we was just so smarmy and dickish! I would really like to see this become a series instead of a stand-alone book. This was my 1st book by Susan Ouellette but it most certainly not be my last!

This book was good but felt like it could have been better-which pains me to say because I love this type of book. Female spies are a great subject matter and a personal favorite. However, I felt like this was a little lackluster. That being said it was still a solid book.

Thank you NetGalley, CamCat Books, and Susan Ouellette for this advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review.

I have never been one to enjoy books about espionage, the government, politics, etc. however, The Wayward Spy kept my attention from the beginning. Susan Ouellette's writing is spectacular and engrossing. Some authors overly describe scenes and give too much information which quickly makes me lose interest or feel overwhelmed. But, there is the perfect balance of descriptions and details, which kept me wanting to know more. I found myself feeling like a spy working with Maggie trying to uncover the truth. I will be immediately looking for the next book in this series to find out what happens next, because this cliffhanger is leaving me wanting to stay up all night to read it.

This was a decent enough book in terms of the writing and suspense and overall plot. The one thing that distracted me was the main character always kept pining about her late husband what he would have done in her situation. For me it was just too much of this over and over. Sorry I couldn't rate it better.

Thank you to NetGalley and Camcat Books for an audiobook copy of this book en exchange for an honest review.

I love the "female spy story" idea because I don't feel like there are enough of those around. The idea for this book is fantastic but I was really hoping to become more engaged with the story and the characters than I was. This wasn't the sit on edge of my seat book that I was expecting. Maggie, the main character, seemed a little too trusting and some of her decision making didn't seem realistic to the situations in which she found herself. She didn't come across as very smart in her decision making a lot of the time. Especially for someone who works in the intelligence industry. She came across as very emotionally motivated and it made it hard for me to connect with her. I do appreciate the research efforts on part of the author. I felt like she knew what she was writing about, it just didn't hook me throughout most of the story. Great to read if you are looking for a fun book that isn't too intense.

This book is an intriguing spy thriller novel. It's my first read by this author. The main character, Maggie Jenkins, is planning her upcoming wedding to fiance, Steve, when he is killed overseas. When it is suggested the Steve could be a traitor selling secrets to the Russian as a CIA operative, Maggie knows he isn't capable of that level of dishonesty and investigates herself to get to the truth. From arms dealers, to crooked politicians, Maggie doesn't know who she can trust. The book is action packed as Maggie looks for the truth. I read this book in a day. Great read with developed characters!

An action packed page-turner. Maggie gets herself into some sh!t trying to clear her fiancées name. When the CIA doesn’t help her get some answers, she dangerously takes matters into her own hands.

There’s a lot of character growth for Maggie throughout this novel, which i loved. She goes from being a seemingly average woman into a take-no-bullshit heroine. I love that throughout the novel you don’t know who to trust, even those you through were your closest friends.

I could see this being adapted for the screen! Hopefully, not one of those flops that’s nothing like the book though!

This book is very different from what I normally read. That being said, I can saw that I honestly greatly enjoyed this book. I felt that everything was well written and the story progressed without giving the main plot away. I am sad that the other books in this series is not on this site, however I will be purchasing the others to finish out this story.

The Wayward Spy offers a lot in the way of espionage entertainment. This is the story of a woman who loses her fiancé in an unexpected encounter with an intelligence source. At the funeral, she is grieving his death and then is immediately faced with the possibility that her fiancé was working for the enemy.

The aggrieved near widow seeks to clear her beloved’s name, and the plot thickens from there. At times this book was very engaging but most times it felt like every possible topic being thrown at the wall like spaghetti. Overall this wasn’t my cup of tea, but I think those more interested in espionage and more willing to suspend their disbelief may enjoy it.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion and review of this book. Thank you NetGalley and IBPA for the opportunity to review this book.

When I chose to read this book, I picked it on a whim. I am so glad that I read this book as it has become my favorite of the year. I really liked the way the author helps you get to know Maggie and her struggles with her fiance's death. However, it is not a stereotypical love or crime book. It is the perfect mix of crime, but gives you a taste of Maggie's love life. It shows what a person would do for their significant other. I am really excited to continuing reading this series.

Interesting...Maggie Jenkins is an analyst for Homeland Security Council and planning to marry Steve, an operative for the CIA when he is killed on a mission. When she is contacted before the funeral by someone telling her to not believe everything she is told about Steve and then one of his CIA companions tries to talk with her at the funeral and warn her, she is suspicious. When she brings these suspicions to Steve's boss and mentor there are so many questions Maggie goes on a fact-finding trip and plays spy. Twists and turns in the country of Georgia have her kidnapped and nearly killed and barely making it home to the US. Who is the top ranking official who is selling secrets? Maggie has to find out but will she find out in time. Good story plot and good pace.

This was an engaging read! Plenty of action and solid characters. The narrator was great for this. I will have to see what happens next!

This was definitely a different read for me. I was on my toes from the beginning, as the author had stated that while this is a work of fiction, she had the book examined. She didn't want to give any secrets away. I saw CIA and secrets, and Russia. The first memorable scene reminded of MI-5, A television series. I won't spoil. However, it is necessary to note there is a death and the character of this person is questioned.

Most of the characters work in one form or another of government. Which in turn means they have titles that on audio can't be skipped. At one point, midway, I was a little put out by all the secrecy and I won't tell if you don't tell. We are talking National Security. Real life aside, the story is good. I think in extreme circumstances we will all twist a confidence. Once I accepted the shady sides, I enjoyed the story. I do think it ran a little long.

Erin Bennett did a nice job as the narrator.

Thank you NetGalley and Camcat Books for accepting my request to read and review The Wayward Spy. I am looking forward to exploring more of Susan Ouellette's work.

The story is established in the underworld of secrets agents, intelligence agents, terrorists, Russian mafia, and Jihad They’re all here: all working to sabotage each other at every chance.
Maggie’s fiancé is killed in a terrorist attack. His reputation becomes slandered: accusations fly around that he was selling secret documents. This spurs Maggie to defend his name and she flies to the site of the bombing to find out what happened. What she didn’t expect when she started asking questions, were the red flags that went up and she then found herself in the middle of the treachery and deceit.
This world of spies leaves her unable to trust anyone, even her closest mentor…….they’re all involved in some manner in the scheme at some level, money and power always the driving force.
The “hard to swallow” part of this story was Maggie’s ability to become a gun wielding, car chasing, lock picking, file stealing, gun toting defender of the country. That was a stretch……..entertaining for sure.
A thriller that doesn’t resolve itself until the very end………with a big surprise.

Spy thrillers are usually my husband's lane and not mine but I liked that Wayward Spy was from the perspective of a female analyst instead of a male operative. I was excited for Maggie to take the situation into her own hands but found her to be inconsistently written to some extent. She would display incredibly in-depth reasoning and reactions in chapter to then devolve into a useless mess in the next.

Other than that, I became quite caught up in the plot and enjoyed the convoluted clues of who was working with who. I was able to guess pieces but it was written well enough that I second guessed myself a few times. I was slightly upset with the way the book ended, with the plot being open-ended to the point that it didn't technically wrap up as a complete story at all. I will definitely be reading the second book "The Wayward Assassin" which would be part of the point!

Definitely recommend for anyone that likes spy thrillers even though the female main character is not technically a CIA spy, others involved are and her actions are spy related.

𝘚𝘶𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭, 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤!

What an amazing ride, it kept me at the edge of my seat since from start to finish.
I loved Maggie’s character, a badass female spy, yes please!
It was simply unputdownable, my only advise if you read this one is to buckle up and prepare for a fantastic ride.

Mixed opinion of the main character, somethings were good, but mostly she is kind of dumb. If she is an example of the people who serve as analysts for the CIA or House Intelligence Committee, I can certainly understand why foreign affairs and National Security are such a mess. Someone who works for these departments cannot be asked to lock her doors? Seriously? And her friend is stealing classified documents and no one seems to care?

I wanted to like this book, and frankly, I didn’t. She does not solve anything. Instead, Maggie bumbles around and has to trip over a dozen obvious clues before she manages to figure it out – or someone tells her. The bay guy is obvious from the very beginning – well both of them. All three? Guess it depends on how you count. But there was no mystery for the reader, only for a character of limited intelligence.

Add to that the rather major issue that the book doesn’t end so much as it stops. There is no resolution. The matters are left unresolved. Rather than enticing one to read the next installment (yes, unfortunately, there is one), it is like a door being slammed in one’s face mid-sentence. Whilst addressing the style of author Susan Ouellette, she could not keep her details straight. Maggie worked for the CIA and trained at the Farm but then later claims her late fiancé taught her how to shoot a gun.

For a book that allegedly had to be cleared by the CIA before it could be published, it lacks all credibility. Perhaps that is more down to the CIA edits than Ouellette’s writing, but it doesn’t feel that way.
