This featured the first few chapters of 7 versatile books.
Youngblood has been on my anticipated TBR for awhile. The story of a young teen who is a born vampire and who is given a full ride to a pretty elite vampire boarding school. The sampler chapters really leave you wanting more, especially when you’re a fan of vampire books. 5/5
It Sounds Like This was not the book for me personally. It’s about band and band camp, and those are personally stuff I’m not interested in. However, it’s not that the storyline wasn’t interesting or captivating, just not the story for me personally. 3/5
These Fleeting Shadows has been anticipated for my coworker and I. It follows a family drama, and a lot is left up in the air surrounding the massive house that the young character’s family returns to. Very interesting. 5/5
The 99 Boyfriends of Micah Summers took me by surprise as I read it. Following a boy just trying to get his first boyfriend, and illustrating the crushes he’s had over the years in fantastical ways. Now on number 100, he wants to do something special. What seems like a fantastic romance coming of age tale. I would totally continue reading this one. 5/5
How to Succeed in Witchcraft is equal parts family drama and witch school. Very interesting concept. I think I need to read more to really get into it, but it was a solid 4/5.
A Scatter of Light seems like an absolute heartbreaker of a book, but then again Malinda Lo seems to have that ability. A family drama that involves the main character ending up spending the summer with her artist grandmother after an scandal with her school mates. I can see some themes of grief popping up, and one’s of self discovery. 5/5 would finish reading
The Edge of Being appears to be one of longing and discovery, the main character wants to know who his father is, and has issues relating to his mother ever since. Not quite my preferred writing style, but still very well written. I don’t believe I was the appropriate audience for this one. 4/5
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me access to the free advanced digital sampler of these books
A fun, diverse sample of upcoming YA titles. Love to see so many queer books coming out, and this selection has a little something for everyone!
Thank you for this preview! I'm excited to read all of these books, but especially The 99 Boyfriends of Micah Summers.
These YA samplers, offered free, are the best way for us as educators and teachers to quickly get a sense of what is coming out. The YA market is booming and we have come so far in the diversity of books that as a teacher of color, I just cannot keep up. These samplers help me to fine tune my reading and purchases for my upcoming teachers. Ones I specifically pinpointed to read from this sampler are: The 99 Boyfriends of Micah Summers by Adam Sass, The Edge of Being by James Brandon, How to Succeed in Witchcraft by Aislinn Brophy and Youngblood by Sasha Laurens.
Thank you to Penguin for making this available as well as creating webinars with the authors to further sell these books.
Samplers like this are a great way to get readers excited about upcoming books, and I am included in them.
Very interesting stories, the vampire one is my favourite, i love this format
I admit i only paid attention to the first story mentioned in here but i skimped through the rest
I could easily read any and all of these based on the excerpts provided! I can see Youngblood being super-popular with the vampire theme (and I love anything with a hint of dystopia). These Fleeting Shadows has my interest the most out of all of them, but every book in this sampler seems quite compelling. Thanks for the opportunity to read!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This sampler provided an amazing and interesting choice of stories that were very interesting and intriguing. Can't wait for these to be released!
This superb sampler has a great selection of queer YA fiction. Seven titles which include vampires, school band, gothic fiction and witchy academia; all great and I absolutely want to read more.
Young Blood by Sasha Laurens will impress fans of First Blood, the contemporary vampire theme is bang en pointe just now, and I can see this being a form favourite.
It Sounds Like This by Anna Mariano has that high school vibe which I know will strike a chord with many readers.
These Fleeting Shadows by Kate Alice Marshall is I think my favourite and I cannot wait to finish this gothic suspense story.
The 99 boyfriends of Micah Summers by Adam Sass has all the promise of a great summer read. I want to find out more about this character.
How to Succeed at Witchcraft by Aislinn Briohy is exactly what fans of magical academia need. I live a good witchy story. Fans of Threadneedle will like this.
A Scatter of Light by Malinda Lo - writer of the amazing novel Last Night at the Telegraph Club - is quite possibly a new favourite author of mine. I’ll be ordering up this book for sure.
The Edge of Being by James Brandon. This is an emotional one. Chapter one is headed; ‘ If broken hearts are maps to the soul, why do I keep getting lost?’ and it’s lines like this that will own me.
Many thanks for this sampler, it’s done it’s job!
This Pride Month 2022 YA Sampler features the first two or three chapters of 7 upcoming books. As an ex-band kid, I am most excited for It Sounds Like This. I also really like magic school stories, so I am excited for How to Succeed in Witchcraft and Youngblood - not sure if a vampire school counts as a magic school but I'm still intrigued!
The Pride Month YA sampler was great! I’m looking forward to Youngblood; I’ve heard fantastic things about it. Malinda Lo is one of my favorite writers and I am very excited to read A Scatter of Light. I had not previously heard about It Sounds Like This, but I felt drawn in by the cover alone. The Edge of Being and The 99 Boyfriends of Micah Summers also look great. Thank you so much to Penguin Teen and Netgalley for the opportunity to read the sampler in exchange for honest feedback.
I'm gonna need a copy of every single one of these samplers as they were all so good. I wish I had this many great YA books when I was a teen!
Thanks to Penguin Teen and Netgalley for the opportunity to preview this exciting new sampler. Quality titles are especially important for this audience and their allies. I am excited to read these excerpts.
This was a great selection of Pride samples! I'm excited to read pretty much every book that is coming out
Thank you to Penguin Teen and Netgalley for the Young Adult Sampler. There are so many great books featured in this sampler. Thank you agian! I love it!
I really enjoyed trying out the first few chapters of seven upcoming queer YA books! Some of them didn't really catch my interest, but a few are definitely ones I want to read!
Youngblood was the first one that caught my attention. This book was already a little bit on my radar, but the opening chapters were engaging! The concept and the world were interesting and I wanted to know more about everything. Vampire stories are always fun, and this one seemed to also have elements of a cheesy teen drama (in a good way!).
A Scatter of Light was definitely my favorite book from this sampler. I adored Last Night at the Telegraph Club and I cannot wait for this companion book. I was so sad when I got to the end of the limited chapters here.
These Fleeting Shadows, The 99 Boyfriends of Micah Summers, and How to Succeed in Witchcraft all had some promise but did not immediately call to me. The haunting atmosphere in These Fleeting Shadows was fun and different in tone from the other books in this collection.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing this chance to preview a few new releases!
I already had "Youngblood" and "These Fleeting Shadows" in my anticipated release for this year, and I was really happy to read the first two chapters of each of them. It really intrigued me, the way both started and got me interested on the whole story, and I actually can't wait to read them!
I then discovered "The 99 boyfriends of Micah Summers", which already made me smile and sounded fun from the tiny part I've read, it's definitelly added to my anticipated release wishlist! Same goes for "How to succeed in Witchcraft", I've never heard of it so it was nice to discover it with that sample, I really liked how the magic worked and yes, I'll definitely read it when it gets released.
"A scatter of light" was really well written and it intrigued me but at the same time I don't know much about my feeling about it? Maybe it was a slow start so it didn't hooked me, but I'll keep an eye on the reviews when it gets released, maybe it'll help me get interested :)
Sadly "The edge of being" isn't my type of thing even if it was well written, as well as "It sounds like this" which I actually was a bit bored reading it already.
I'm happy I was able to read sampler for these 7 upcoming releases, it was a nice range of genre!
Missing some words, not too sure if it’s the ebook copy or another reason entirely. This made the extracts a bit disjointed. I do like get a taster of the books that will be coming out this year or that have already come out, see if I like reading it before I buy it.
This sampler contains samples from 7 upcoming YA books from Penguin, each sample being 20-something pages long. All in all, really interesting books - see names, release dates, summaries, and my thoughts on each below.
Youngblood by Sasha Laurens, release 7.19.22
- Kat's a vampire working a summer job while trying to hide her true nature from her friends. She secretly applied to an elite vampire boarding school against her mom's wishes but has to tell her when Kat gets her acceptance letter as she really wants to go.
- I'll definitely be checking this one out when it's released
It Sounds Like This by Anna Meriano, release 8.2.22
- Yasmin is in a marching band at school where she plays the flute. Her bff/frenemy Sofia and her seem to be competing for everything.
- This one didn't really speak me too much and I'll probably give it a miss
These Fleeting Shadows by Kate Alice Marshall, release 8.9.22
- 17-year-old Helen has weird dreams in which she keeps tasting dirt and wakes up terrified. She also has strange visions, and carries around a fox skull. When her grandfather dies and her family has to go to his funeral, Helen is just straight up not having a good time.
- This one seems pretty mysterious and has me intrigued. I may well read it when it's released
The 99 Boyfriends of Micah Summers by Adam Sass, release 9.20.22
- Micah's 17, lives in Chicago, believes in fairy tales, and likes to draw. He also has an instagram where he uploads his drawings of guys he crushes on, or his "instaloves." None of these crushes have ever gone anywhere and Micah's getting frustrated that he's got 99 posts but no dates. He's determined to make crush 100 the one that's actually special.
- I've been hearing about this book and the sample made me want to read more. I'll likely be getting this book in September.
How to Succeed in Witchcraft by Aislinn Brophy, release 9.27.22
- Shayna lives in a world where magic is normal and she herself is a witch. She goes to a fancy magnet school but has always felt a little different due to being half-black, lesbian, and not powerful in spells (even if her potions skills are pretty good.)
- This one didn't really appeal to me. May check it out upon release but I'll probably give it a miss
A Scatter of Light by Malinda Lo, release 10.4.22
- Aria has to spend her summer holidays with her grandma who's a famous artist. Not her ideal summer but shortly before the end of the school year, a boy Aria hooked up with took naked pictures of her and spread them online. Aria's always felt a bit like an outsider in her world as she's not rich like most of her friends. After the pictures are shared, these friends quickly uninvite Aria for their summer plans and since her dad is working, Aria is spending time with her grandma.
- I really liked the writing in this and I'm definitely intrigued to read more.
The Edge of Being by James Brandon, release 10.11.22
- Ever since he was a kid, Isaac's known he doesn't have a dad, as his mom told him she used a sperm donor at a clinic to have him. Isaac. However, four months prior, Isaac found a love letter from this so-called sperm donor to his mom who has refused to talk about it with Isaac. Now he's left wondering who he is and why his mom won't tell him about his dad.
- This one I'm 50/50 on. It was interesting but I need to read more to know whether I for sure want to check out the full book or if I'll have forgotten about it come October.
