In the days before her wedding, Rachel Grant discovers the body of her fiancé's ex-wife on the floor of his apartment. Her fiancé, John, is an NYPD detective and he becomes the primary suspect. Rachel enlists the assistance of her father, Austin, a retired Scotland Yard inspector, to help prove her prove John's innocence. Should I Fall is a good detective story, which I enjoyed despite figuring out part of the solution midway.

The second book in the Austin Grant series, this detective/mystery is set in New York when the ex-wife of John Frankel is found dead in Frankel’s apartment.

I had not read the first book but found this book to be a good standalone. The book was solid, with a good storyline and decent characters.

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narrator.

In a nutshell, Should I Fall is the story of a cop who demonstrates incredibly poor judgment, an utter lack of faith in his own profession and co-workers and engages in the most despicably stupid actions when his ex-wife turns up dead in his apartment and he goes on the lamb. His fiancé, Rachel, a journalist, and her retired Scotland Yard detective father (Austin) decide they will investigate, also demonstrating an utter lack of confidence in the police – unless they are also from the Yard. After thoroughly disparaging the NYPD and their ability to conduct a fair and complete investigation, Rachel and her father blunder about doing pretty much nothing whatsoever.

Terrible story, terrible plot, uninspired characters. Paul Woodson narrated well.

A bride-to-be enters her detective fiance's apartment to find his ex-wife dead on the floor. All signs point to him, especially as he seems to have gone into hiding. No one can reach him. She calls her father, a retired Scotland Yard detective and he agrees to help her investigate. What they uncover leads to doubts and confusion about her fiance, as well as others connected to the case. Set in New York, Hawaii, and Maine, it feels as though I'm at each location when listening to the book. The plot is complex, with lots of sub-plots. Either I'm a very good detective, or the outcome was a bit too predicable.

Came for the book..stayed for the great narration!

The book was fine, nothing wrong with it at all, a detective story through and through but not a lot of new ground covered. But the narration was great and captured the intent of the characters. I would listen ( not read) to the other book In this series as well.

Thank you NetGalley and HighBridge Audio for accepting my request to read and review Should I Fall.

This mystery, generally speaking, is okay. The story is not new. It's like an episode of Dragnet, the names and places change. I didn't have feelings, good or bad, for any of the characters. I had just a tad of a thought with the explanation for an estranged father and daughter becoming chummy; however as quickly as the thought came, it left. Also I'm not fond of adults of a mature age whiney and teen-like in their second relationships, and there is more than a little of that. Overall, this was just meh.

I did have the audiobook, and really liked his performance. He definitely was a plus.

I would read the author again, in an airport, on a bus, some place where I might not want to be all engrossed.

Thank you to NetGalley and Mysterious Press for an advance audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I was intrigued by the book description of a daughter of a retired Scotland Yard investigator who is engaged to NYC police detective John Frankel. I was all in when Rachel discovers her fiancé’s wife, dead in his apartment.

This fast paced who-done-it adventure has Rachel and her father on a plane to Hawaii to try to prove John’s innocence, while he evades his own coworkers as he works state side while the bodies pile up..

Things I loved -
Austin Grant has some smooth moves for an old guy.
The side trip to Hawaii and the descriptions of this dream destination.
The mix of British, New York and Hawaiian locations and personalities.

One thing that left me sort of deflated is the way the female characters seem to be really secondary to the plot. Rachel is John’s fiancé and Austin’s daughter but not really her own person. I cringed a little bit when John is on the phone making work calls and she is on the phone making wedding plans.

That said, I found this is actually a sequel - book 2 of “Austin Grant of Scotland Yard” so maybe Rachel is just a secondary character.

I will go back and read book one and recommend this to anybody who likes a fast paced detective mystery.

I liked this book. It reads like a good old-fashioned detective story. Thank-you for the chance to read it.

So many twists and turns in this murder mystery when Rachel shows up to her soon to be husband's apartment to leave a gift in his luggage when what does she find but his murdered ex-wife. This starts the whirlwind chase for clues for the real killer while John who is a NYC Detective is being frame for the murder. Rachel's father is a recently retired Inspector from Scotland Yard and on the next plane from the UK and he joins in the hunt which takes us from New York to Hawaii to Maine and everywhere in between. Bodies are piling up and it isn't until the end we find out who really does it. This one had me intrigued. I guess there was a book before this one but I didn't miss it but if I come across it I will certainly grab it up!

Should I Fall is the second book in a series. I did not read the first one but I didn't feel that it was necessary. the book is character-driven. My problem was that I didn't relate to any of the characters. I did enjoy the few twists in the story.

John Frankel is an NYPD detective and used to being on the right side of the law, but when his ex wife is murdered, he finds himself the prime suspect. When it appears that evidence against him has been manufactured, Frankel goes on the run. His fiancee, Rachel and her father, Austin, a former Scotland Yard detective are left behind to prove that Frankel is innocent, but they need to act quickly, before Frankel’s brother in blue put him out of commission, permanently.
