I had high hopes for this book as a love medical thrillers, but at 25% done I am choosing to not finish. I know more about New York bike lanes at this point than about the murder. Just not the right pacing for me.
As a healthcare worker I was automatically hooked from this cover alone. My first Robin Cook book did not disappoint.
As the Night shift is a medical mystery novel, finding out who the killer is among the hospital it features current topics such as COVID-19 and the COVID vaccine. I loved the medical aspect to the story, so if you work in the healthcare field and love a good murder mystery this one is for you!
Despite how wordy this story is and pretty drawn out at times, it was a solid read for me. This book is part of a series, so I’d recommend to definitely start with his earlier work to help you develop a relationship with the two main characters. The book can be read as a stand alone but I was missing a true connection with the main characters while reading.
Thank you to NetGalley and G.Putnam for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. 🤍
As someone who works night shift often in the ER, I thought I was going to love this book. Instead, I found that it wasn't my favorite. Rather than focusing on work of the night shift, it seemed to focus on a medical examiner wanna-be-detective trying to solve the "suicide"/heart attack/murder of a popular physician. In the end, I didn't continue reading it.
A quick read for someone looking for some mindless reading. The murder mystery was very entertaining. If you are drawn to this title for the medicine it will sadly miss its mark. Other than that, it was an overall enjoyable read for a rainy day.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this title. All opinions are my own.
I have read/enjoyed Robin Cook's books for several years. I thoroughly enjoy the medical mystery/thriller genre and Robin Cook doesn't disappoint with this book either. My background is medical and that is one of the many reasons I truly enjoy these books. The medical situations and stories are accurate and that makes a world of difference, it allows me to be fully immersed in the story instead of searching for all the inaccuracies. Dr Jack Stapleton and Dr Laurie Montgomery end up solving another mystery killing at the hospital. This time it is a close friend of Laurie's that was murdered in order to cover up the work of a medical serial killer.
I would like to thank #Netgalley #PenguinGroupPutnam #G.P.Putnam'sSons and the author #RobinCook for my ARC of #NightShift in exchange for an honest review..
Robin Cook knows how to write medical thrillers! He's done it for decades and this one is just as good as the others I've read. I enjoyed this straightforward medical mystery. There wasn't a huge question for long as to who did it but this book is all about the journey.
couldn't give 5 stars as some of the dialogue felt stilted and not how people talk but otherwise an enjoyable mystery.
Another engaging medical forensic mystery from Robin Cook. I look forward to each new book from him. The characters are well developed and are "people" I want to go back and visit again and again. I always learn something medical or legal in each book. On top of the story, I enjoy leaning some of the new and upcoming things that are happening in medicine and forensics.. I am hooked at the beginning with the first death and enjoy watching the facts come to light, the investigation go on and the final move toward solving the mystery and catching the perpetrator. One deterrent to my fully enjoying the story is the amount of editorializing about the the changes in the business side of medicine and how it is effecting patient care. There is certainly value when it a key issue in the story i.e. (lower staffing and focus on making statistics look good in this story). Beyond that, it detracts from the follow and is irritating (i.e. complaining about electronic medical records). Concentrate on a good and engaging story and leave the editorial comments out, unless they are germane to the story at hand.
Night Shift is a medical thriller that is part of a series of books starring Dr. Laurie Montgomery and Dr. Jack Stapleton. I had read books with these characters in the past, but it has been awhile! The book can easily act as a standalone for those who have not read the series.
The two doctors work at the medical examiner’s office, and an interesting autopsy puts Jack on the hunt for clues in this book. He ruffles some feathers at the hospital where the deceased worked and puts himself in grave danger throughout the story while attempting to figure out the cause of death.
I was surprised when the killer was revealed so early in the story, but had already correctly deduced who it was going to be. There really aren’t many twists in this one, it is quite straightforward. There is a lot of medical jargon throughout and a lot of talk about forensics, which was all interesting to me. Some of the dialogue was very unrealistic, especially when characters would find out someone was dead and should have had a much stronger reaction.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
One of the best medical thrillers that I had the chance to read recently! The medical examiner husband and wife duo take it upon themselves to solve another suspicious death, not caring about the danger they might be finding themselves in.
I haven't read a book by Robin Cook in some time but he is every bit as good as I remember! This book was hard to put down due to the suspense of what would happen next. He is knowledgeable in the medical arena, adding to the authenticity of the story. His characters are well-written and I can relate to how Dr. Stapleton responds with sarcasm. I look forward to catching up on his books. Highly recommended.

This is the first Robin Cook novel I have read in quite some time. It is clearly part of a series, but I thought it was fine as a stand alone. The characters were interesting and the plot moved along at a good pace. The thought of a medical serial killer is alarming and makes for a great story.
I was a disappointed in the addition of Covid/masks/vaccines. Not necessary and it did not add anything to the storyline. ,
Thank you to #NetGalley, #PenguinGroup and Robin Cook for the ARC of #Night Shift.
I love Robin Cook’s books! Cook is arguably one of the best writers of the medical thriller genre, if not the most prolific, and he always has a good and timely story to tell. The main characters are familiar from previous books, but this is easily a stand alone story. Highly recommend this book and this author!
I am a big Robin Cook fan. I loved his book Coma. Unfortunately, this wasn’t a favorite book for me and is a DNF for me. After being a frontline healthcare worker, the last thing I want to read about is COVID and the authors opinions on COVID and the COVID vaccine. The book was very wordy with many details about New York City and bike riding. The bike trail and how it’s changed since the COVID pandemic. It’s probably good if you from New York but for those that are not… it was a LOT about the bike trails and dangers of riding in the city. I felt the book got lost with all of the details
This was a great book. I loved every paragraph, every sentence and every word of this masterpiece! I read it in 12 hours, which is a lot for me to do! It had everything and more laid out in the novel! I sure hope he writes more! I am totally hooked!
Robin Cook was always one of my favorite authors, so I was excited to read this book. It did not seem to be one of his best. Jack seemed to be investigating too much for a doctor. There were too many words that I had to look up that I didn't know what they meant. Also, the pandemic was over done in this book.; too many references to things like masks and protective gear.
I have always loved Robin Cook book - all the way back to Coma!
And I especially have enjoyed the Jack Stapleton series!
I was happy to read another great medical thriller - I couldn’t put it down!
He is so descriptive and I enjoy following the characters.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy!
I look forward to the next storyline
Another hit from the author. Filled with exciting mystery. It was pretty predictable who the villain was so suspense was not present to any degree. Anyone who enjoys a good medical mystery will enjoy this book.
It has been years since I've read one of Robin Cook's medical thrillers, and I enjoyed diving in to a new one. Dr. Jack Stapleton is a medical examiner and his wife Dr Laurie Montgomery is the Chief medical examiner. As Jack arrives to work early to review the available cases, he is shocked to see one of his wife's friends in the file list, and her body needing an autopsy. Jack conducts a very precise autopsy but something doesn't sit right with him, and he starts to do some additional investigating.
The suspense builds from there as Jack begins to uncover and learn more and additional people start to hear about his investigation.
Night Shift is Robin Cook’s latest installment in the exploits of Laurie Montgomery, chief medical examiner of New York City, and her husband, Jack Stapleton, a medical examiner working for his wife. The reader is immediately swept along with the action and is appreciative of the dedication of medical personnel in the office of the medical examiner (including their technical support) and of hospital staffs and the work they do. As usual, in Mr. Cook’s novels, nothing is routine and the reader becomes immersed in situations where there is a “bad guy” committing murders and is as anxious to discover who the culprit is as the characters in the novel.
The book is definitely a medical thriller and is great reading for those who enjoy this genre. However, it would have been beneficial for the book to have included a glossary enabling the reader to understand the medical terminology used throughout — cardiac channelopathy mutations, troponin levels, autosomal dominant, ketoacidosis and hyperkalemia to name a few.
I thank NetGalley and Penguin Random House for the opportunity to read and review this novel prior to publication.
When I requested this book, I didn’t know it was part of a series. Luckily it didn’t matter, I was able to still follow the story without the prior novels. Though, I maybe would have enjoyed it more?
I honestly found Jack to be annoying? And I felt his relationship with Laurie was odd? Maybe if I’d read the prior novels I wouldn’t have felt that way. I also felt Jack did a lot more than was in his scope of practice.. he’s a medical examiner, not an investigator. I felt he was a bit pretentious and it made it difficult for me to get into the story when I wasn’t that fond of the main character.
It felt repetitive and like it was trying to hard to make you aware it was during COVID times. I didn’t love this, but it may be no ones fault but my own for not having read the many many books in the series that came before this one.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Penguin Group for providing me with an ARC of this novel. This is available on December 6 2022.
