I've read many foodie cozies but none that involve pizza. I really enjoyed that aspect of this one. Especially the mob twist to the mystery. Can't wait for the next one in the series.
Pizza? Murder? And a cat? What more could I want in a book than that! When Delilah's aunt gets tangled up in a murder during her pizzeria's grand opening, it's up to her to solve the case!
This book is perfect for fans of other food-based mysteries like Ellie Alexander. It delivers a fun cast of characters and delicious pizza distractions that will have you sitting beside a bowl of rising dough before the end. The first in what is to be a new series, it's a great introduction to the town and characters.
Really liked this story. I liked the characters and plot, and feel like this will be a good series. Lots of potential here. I hope there will be more in this series.
Thanks to her wealthy fiance Sam, Delilah O’Leary is opening a gourmet deep-dish pizzeria in Geneva Bay, Wisconsin. But the soft opening goes awry when Sam abruptly dumps her & Delliah finds the dead body of her elderly aunt's caregiver. Police detective Calvin Capone, great grandson of the legendary gangster, investigates. Delilah & her aunt Biz are determined to find the real killer and to save her fledgling business.
This was an enjoyable debut culinary mystery.
I received a digital ARC from Netgalley and St. Martin's Press. All opinions are my own.
When Delilah O’Leary moved back to Geneva Bay, Wisconsin, she planned on opening her own restaurant. But she didn’t plan on the soft opening becoming a crime scene.
Delilah and her sous chef Sonya are prepped with pizza dough, the perfect sauce, and dozens of toppings for their high-end deep dish pizzas. Delilah has dreamt of opening her own restaurant for years, and with the help of her fiancé Sam and his deep pockets, she’s finally able to take the chance. She moved back to help take care of her great-aunt Elizabeth, who has a caregiver to help her, but still Delilah wants to be more involved in Auntie Biz’s life.
During the soft opening of the restaurant, Delilah spends the night talking to her family and friends, making sure everyone is eating well, promoting the restaurant, and trying to keep track of her staff. Sonya has the kitchen running like a Swiss clock, and bartender Daniel is great with a pour, so the bar is under control. Hostess Melody is doing her best, but their server, Carson, is missing in action. Delilah decides to take care of that right away.
Carson had consistently been late and negligent, and Delilah was going to fire him immediately. She heard that he had been heading towards the lake, so that was the direction she went. But she was distracted, first by a loud bang, and the by a quiet voice calling for help. Delilah follows the voice to find it’s Auntie Biz. Her caregiver Jeremy is lying there, covered in blood. And Biz is holding a gun, her gun, Well, one of her guns.
After being questioned by Detective Calvin Capone, great-grandson of another Capone, Delilah is able to get Biz into bed into her apartment. But the restaurant is put on hold until Delilah can make sure that Biz is okay. Meanwhile, Delilah and Sam have had a big fight, and he’s disappeared. Someone breaks into Delilah’s apartment in the night and steals Biz’s medicine. And Biz ends up in the hospital. Despite being told often by Detective Capone not to investigate, Delilah feels like it’s the only way to save her restaurant and keep Auntie Biz safe.
But how much danger is Delilah putting herself in as she keeps sticking her chef’s knife into other people’s business?
Six Feet Deep Dish is the first in Mindy Quigley’s Deep Dish Mystery series. It’s filled with a cast of strong and fun characters, and the mystery is well written. But be prepared for two things with this series. First of all, you will be hungry. Hearing Delilah and Sonya describe these pizza creations they are making will make your mouth water while you read, so I hope you are willing to try out one of the recipes at the end, or that you have a good deep dish pizza place nearby. And second, Delilah and Sam’s chonky orange cat Butterball steals all the scenes she’s in.
I listened to the audio book for this one, narrated by Holly Adams, and I really enjoyed listening to this book. I thought it was read well, with lots of personality, which helps keep all the characters distinct as you listen. Even the recipes at the end are told in character, as Sonya teaches listeners how to make their signature dough and Daniel piping in with a cocktail recipe.
I thought Six Feet Deep Dish was a lot of fun. It has a solid foundation for a good cozy mystery series, and having the detective be a descendant of one of Chicago’s most notorious gangsters adds some interesting spice. I thought Delilah was a little naïve when it comes to crime-solving, but it gives her a chance to grow as a character through the series, so I look forward to seeing where she goes next. This is a strong start, and it offers a lot of potential for Delilah and Son and the rest of the gang to make delicious food and to solve more murders.
Egalleys for Six Feet Deep Dish were provided by St. Martin’s Press through NetGalley, but I bought the audio book myself from Chirp.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martins Press for the ARC. Six Feet Deep Dish is a new series cozy mystery. A fun quirky mystery read that you can just get lost in. Definitely recommend 👍🏻
Six Feet Deep Dish is a new series starter by cozy writer Mindy Quigley. Released 23rd Aug 2022 by Macmillan on their St. Martin's Press imprint, it's 320 pages and is available in mass market paperback, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.
This is an engaging light shopfront cozy with an appealing female protagonist pizza-shop owner who has just been dumped by her erstwhile fiancé, a chubby tabby cat, and an unwanted murder victim who could scupper her dreams of business ownership before they really get started. The de rigueur handsome detective makes an appearance, and it's full of the sort of small town quirky eccentric characters which populate cozies.
The plot arc is admittedly a tiny bit trope-y but quite entertaining and it's a fun read overall. The denouement and resolution are satisfyingly self-contained in this book, but it's clearly a series opener. In fact, the second book, Ashes to Ashes, Crust to Crust , is due out in 2nd quarter 2023.
There are more than the usual number of pizza themed recipes included in the back of the book.
Four stars. Highly recommended for fans of humorous light shopfront cozies like those from Ellie Alexander, Laurie Cass, and Peggy Ehrhart.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
A pizza restaurant with an upscale twist in the resort town of Geneva Bay, Wisconsin, a chef whose main concern has been the menu, not murder, a group of quirky and lovable supporting characters, a detective whose family tree includes Al Capone and a chubby, adorable cat named Butterball all make this a cozy mystery you'll love!
This was an interesting start to a new series. And man! The pizza! I liked the characters but Butterball is my favorite. It was a great light read.
Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I have been provided with a review copy of Six Feet Deep Dish from NetGalley for an impartial review. This book was just so easy to get lost in. I completely got lost in the story and I just loved getting to see these new characters come together. I just absolutely love this story and I just didn’t want to put it down. I can’t wait to see what’s next from this author.
The set-up and introduction to this new cosy mystery series is an emotional roller coaster. Our main character, Delilah, is prepping for the opening of her new restaurant. With her super-rich, but unambitious fiance, Sam, as her financial backer, and her best friend, Sonya, as her sous-chef, everything is heading in the right direction. Until it’s not.
First, the restaurant sign (that Sam was in charge of) shows up with a major error causing Delilah and Sam have a huge fight. Sam breaks off the engagement and takes off, leaving the restaurant without any cashflow. On top of all that, Delilah stumbles across a dead body, PLUS her elderly aunt is sitting a few feet away from the corpse, with a gun in her lap. Could things get any worse?
There was SO much happening in the first few chapters of the book that I was sucked in and couldn’t stop reading. And it continues on at this pace for almost the entire book. There’s always something happening that it’s really hard to put the book down and walk away from it. I really enjoyed the murder mystery aspect of the story and there were lots of interesting twists and turns to keep me guessing until nearly the end.
And I haven’t even gotten started on the fact that this is a PIZZA restaurant. Do not, I repeat, do not even think of reading this on an empty stomach! I LOVE pizza and the deep dish pizza descriptions are drool-inducing (even the cover of this book is one of my favourites).
The characters are… eclectic? I’m not sure how to put it. They are such a varied bunch and I think it’s still too soon to get a real feel for them. I like the way they came together to make sure the restaurant succeeded, but I don’t have a particular favourite (yet).
I think the best word is … I’m intrigued. I definitely want to learn more about them and see how I feel towards them as we get to know them. I’m not really a fan of Sam – his character seems unreliable and a bit flaky but it will be interesting to see if he changes and steps up in the future. And Det. Capone (his last name and backstory were a bit distracting) is a fun potential love interest.
The one character that I really liked was Delilah. And I think it’s because…. well, her characteristics, reactions, instincts…. they’re ME. LOL. She hits a little close to home and it’s both unsettling and yet, oddly thrilling. It’s rare that I come across any character that I could identify with so much (not our backgrounds, but the way we react to situations) that I had to stop several times to just shake my head at her.
All in all, this is a fantastic start to a series. It’s quirky, fun, and has some really memorable characters. I even had a great time reading the recipes at the back because done as if the characters from the book wrote them so comes complete with commentary and I loved that little detail to the recipes!
*** Thank you to the publisher, St. Martin’s Press, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
Debut of new cozy series set in Lake Geneva where chef, Delilah O'Leary is opening a gourmet pizza restaurant bankrolled by her wealthy fiance. Unfortunately during the soft opening, her elderly aunt is left holding the smoking gun after a murder. In order to save her aunt, and her restaurant, she has to accept help from others to save her aunt and the restaurant. The secondary characters are interesting with potential are the series builds out.
Mindy Quigley's cozy mystery series featuring pizzeria owner and amateur sleuth Delilah O'Leary is chock-full of page-turning ingredients, from quirky suspects to delicious dishes and strong-willed pets. I especially enjoyed the additional twist that Delilah’s cop love-interest is a descendant of Al Capone.
In this 1st in a series, chef Delilah O'Leary's opening night party is marred by her finding a corpse, her Auntie Biz nearby holding the murder weapon!
Light cozy mystery about a young restaurateur who is opening a new pizza restaurant, but she has to solve a murder and try to find out who is stealing from her apartment plus figure out who is trying to harm her grandmother. Light reading, it very enjoyable. Recipes included.
I loved this book. The characters, setting, story are all quirky but the author makes it work perfectly. It was such a goo, easy read that I couldn’t put it down
It took me a while to get to this book because of the holidays! But January has been a catch up month and I am so glad I got to meet Delilah and Son!
Mindy Quigley created a world where pizza, good friends, an overfed cat and a murder come together for a fast-paced read that kept me guessing the whole time I was reading
I was never quite who did it and why, which made every character a suspect.
Geneva Bay's new lakefront pizza spot is having their soft opening with friends and family, and emotions are flying high everywhere. Delilah, the chef is elbow deep in pizza dough and relationship troubles with her long time boyfriend and fiancé Sam.
On the biggest night of her career they break up, there's a murder and her elderly Aunt Biz is left holding the smoking gun.
So begins a fabulous marinara covered cozy that puts Delilah and her cast of friends and a cheeky cat, to try to find the killer to they can reopen their pizza place before they run out of money and go out of business.
Big fan of possible love interest between Delilah and the Geneva Bay Police investigator Capone and even bigger fan of Butterball the ornery and overfed cat.
Look forward to book 2 in this series and hearing about the characters and pizza of Geneva Bay.
I love pizza, cats, and mysteries so I was really looking forward to reading this one.
I really enjoy culinary cozy mysteries and I’ll definitely add this to my list for future reading.
The cast is fun, like a group of friends, with great chemistry. Obviously the setting is wonderful, a pizzeria. Although a murder mystery, there were a few other mysteries to figure out, even a twist or two.
I’m looking forward the next release this year and continuing on with the series.
I had a digital copy from NetGalley in return for an honest review and well as a purchased audio copy. I highly recommend.
Loved this series and the sense of community that was in here. I always love an animal in a cozy mystery and Butterball was no exception. It was a funny and engaging story that I could hardly put down.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC.
This was a very enjoyable start to a new cozy mystery series. Delilah is ready to open her new Chicago-themed pizza restaurant in Geneva Bay, Wisconsin. On opening night someone is murdered and Delilah's aunt is holding the murder weapon. Great character development, and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
