Overall I enjoyed this first book in a new cozy series. Delilah has moved to Geneva Bay, Wisconsin to be with her elderly Aunt Biz and to open her own restaurant a Chicago Style Deep Pizza Place. When her Aunt's caretaker is shot with her Aunt's gun Delilah sets out to solve the crime. I really enjoyed the town, a thinly disguised Lake Geneva. I really liked many of the supporting characters, the restaurant staff, Her Aunt Biz and the cat Butterball. The mystery was good with lots of suspects and motives but I was able to figure it out. The gourmet deep dish pizzas also sounded wonderful. I did not care for the main character Delilah. She is not the sharpest knife in the butcher block and I did not care for the way she treated those around her. I hope she smartens up and loosens up in the next book. Enjoy the book for the setting and the other characters. And the Pizza
This is one of the best cozies I have read. The characters are strong, the setting a wonderful seaside resort town and the plot is tight. Delilah O’Leary has it all; she is about to open a new gourmet deep-dish pizzeria and she has a handsome and rich fiancé. The night before her restaurant is scheduled to open, a body is found and Delilah's elderly aunt is found holding the murder weapon. Secrets are revealed, trust is questioned and Delilah begins to question her relationship. Do not read while hungry - there are mouthwatering descriptions of Delilah's gourmet pizza creations that are to die for!
I love a good cozy as much as the next woman, but this first in series takes the cake...or should I say pizza? Wonderfully original. Excellent plot. Characters you'll want to meet again in the next books. Six Feet Deep Dish is must read for coxy mystery fans!
SIX FEET DEEP DISH by Mindy Quigley
The First Deep Dish Mystery
Opening a restaurant is stressful, even for experienced chef Delilah O’Leary. While her gourmet pizza recipes are practically perfect and her sous chef and bartender top rate, her wealthy fiance is a bit too laid back leading to a huge blowout. Despite his leaving, the restaurant's soft opening is going well, but when Delilah storms off to catch her wayward server she instead finds her elderly aunt with a gun in her hand and a man dead at her feet. Under a shade of suspicion, with her fiance missing, the restaurant unable to open, and no access to funds Delilah figures she better find the killer quick, before she's out of business for good.
I absolutely adored the first Deep Dish Mystery. I love the fact that Delilah O’Leary is a professional chef. She's a perfectionist who is attentive to detail, has no tolerance for fools or slackers, and has a volcanic temper. Traits also useful in solving crimes...well, not the temper part. Her character and the restaurant culture depicted here are so true to life I half wonder if the author spent time in the restaurant industry herself. I appreciate the fact that the characters found here are a little bit different from the average cast of cozy characters. Not only do we have a hot tempered chef as a protagonist, but a flighty new age fiance, a detective with a unique family history, a restaurant full of intriguing personalities, and a big cat named Butterball. I have a particular fondness for Butterball and Rabbit.
Descriptions of food throughout the book had me salivating and craving pizza, although, to be honest, I am not a fan of the deep dish variety. But don't tell Delilah. Be sure to read the recipes included at the end of the book, even if you never intend to make them. Various characters share the recipes in their own words and had me laughing out loud even as my mouth was watering!
With a nod to old time Chicago mobsters SIX FEET DEEP DISH serves up a great mystery sprinkled with humor and spiced with good food. This crisply written novel with an intriguing and thought provoking murder is a phenomenal start to a new series.
SIX FEET DEEP DISH is a terrific cozy mystery set in a pizzeria that's located in Geneva Bay, Wisconsin. It's been Delilah's dream to open it and with the help of her fiance' Sam, they made it happen. The characters are wonderful and full of personality including Butterball the cat and Delilah's Aunt Biz.
The opening night doesn't go as planned after Delilah and Sam have a fight that leads to him packing his bags and then during the evening there's a murder! Delilah and her friends are left to deal with the fallout in this refreshing new series. I so look forward to the next one and will see if Mindy Quigley has any other books!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the advanced copy. I apologize for the late review but life got in the way. I highly recomnend it!!
Six Feet Deep Dish by Mindy Quigley
Fresh mozzarella, tangy tomato sauce, and murder: the perfect recipe for ba delicious first entry in this author’s new series, “Six Feet Deep Dish”.
If you are a pizza lover, this is the book for you. Many ways to make a delectable pizza plus murder, poisons, chefs, and restaurants.
This novel has therm all. Many characters to sort out. I enjoyed reading this book and you will too..
Food, cozy animal companions, and a mystery?! You’re speaking my language! There is nothing better then when our amateur sleuth is trying to start her life over and has a feisty older aunt in tow.
I enjoyed this debut cozy mystery. Butterball the cat definitely steals the show for me!!
I don’t love the main character Delilah but I did enjoy the rest of the cast of characters and the mystery was good enough that it kept me guessing. I think the pacing was a tiny bit off, but I imagine the series gets better as it goes.
Overall if you love cozy mysteries I highly recommend this one! Also be prepared to need to eat pizza while reading haha
This book ticks all of the appropriate cozy mystery genre. There were a good amount of twists and it kept me guessing until the end. All I can really ask for this type of book.
Delilah O’Leary,a strong willed do everything herself kind of girl is realizing her dream of opening a lake front gourmet pizza restaurant!
A fight with her fiancé, an elderly Aunt who seems to be declining even with a full time caretaker and a lazy server threaten her perfect plans. Could anything else go wrong?
Absolutely, a murder occurs right on the dock outside her place and her Aunt is found with the murder weapon in her lap.
Thinking herself a real life Nancy Drew,
she picks her way through various clues even though attractive Officer Capone tells her not to get involved. As the case moves along, we are introduced to a great cast of characters especially an overweight cat named Butterball. Wit,sass, humor and the possibility of romance get the pace moving in this fun who done it. Until the end you just don’t know!
Now,after all the mouth watering food descriptions I need to order pizza!
I received a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions in this review are my own.
Thank you #stmartinspress #SixFeetDeepdDish
Absolutely loved this book. So cleverly written working the cooking terms into Delilah's conversations. The characters throughout were well defined and the story was light and humorous. Would definitely read more books in this series. .
If you like cozy mysteries, this one is for you! I really enjoyed the characters and setting of this story. Pizza, cats, and murder.
So I almost DNF'd this book because it was soooo-o slow and boring in the beginning. I get -
Geneva Bay, Wisconsin is a small town and Delilah O’Leary needs to get her gourmet pizzeria off the ground. And she has a wealthy tech entrepreneur fiancé. And she has a plus sized cat named Butterball. But that could've been said in one page not the first half of the book.
You can skip the first half of the book and just start reading it from there where the murder actually happens during her initial opening day.
This was a really strong start to a new series! The storyline was good, but I really enjoyed the characters and thought they were well written. Looking forward to continuing this series.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for the complimentary digital review copy of this title.
I dare anyone to read this fun little mystery and not walk away with a deep craving for deep-dish pizza or good food in general. Quigley writes well all around, but her descriptions of food had me salivating.
Writing something so vividly that it leaps off the page is a skill that not many authors possess, yet Quigley manages not just to make you crave the food but to connect with the characters and situations they're in. It makes following Delilah’s attempts at solving the murder that happened at her restaurant's door and implicates her aunt much more exciting. Add the fact that every character we meet is interesting and brings a little something extra to the story and you've got a story that pulls you in and keeps you hooked to the very last page.
The only reason I'm not giving this one the full five-star review is that, as good as it is, it follows the cozy mystery/amateur detective template far too closely. It's still super enjoyable but I would have appreciated a good original twist somewhere in there.
Many happy thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Paperbacks for the great read!
Based in Geneva Bay, Wisconsin, Delilah O’Leary is opening a gourmet deep-dish pizzeria. Just before it opens, her fiancé leaves her. He was the one financing her. Then she discovers a dead body. If that's not enough, her aunt is holding the murder weapon! As with so many cozy mysteries, the good looking police detective investigates. Of course there is some romantic tension. Delilah begins investigating herself. I found this to start off rather slow, but the story was interesting. She stays one step ahead of Calvin Capone in solving the mystery. It is a fun read and quite entertaining. This has the potential to be a great series.
This took a bit for me to read. Honestly, it wasn't the book, it was me. I enjoyed this and was thrown by the twist of who dun it. I loved the nod to classic mobsters and look forward to more in this series.
I love a good cozy mystery! One that incorporates all of my favorite topics (i.e. bookstores, libraries, cooking, painting, inn keeping, animals, etc.), throwing in some action-suspense, a who-done-it, interesting characters, and a plot that keeps me guessing, then you’ve got me hooked. I will say, I am one of those people who like to read a series from the beginning, but I often find you don’t have to… either way I highly recommend Six Feet Deep Dish by Mindy Quigley.
*I received a complimentary copy of this novel from NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.*
Such a cute cozy mystery. I always love reading stories that are based in an area that could be close by in the midwest. The main character is likable, the story line was easy to read and intriguing. I would like to read more by this author!
This was a great cozy mystery, with interesting characters and a fun storyline! I would highly recommend this book to everyone!
