received an advance readers copy in exchange for an honest review – this book is free of many of the clichés of suburban women's fiction . However , in between the very witty barbs and insights, the narrative isn't that compelling . Some of the characters are unlikable in an unpleasant way that seems more one-dimensional than literary . it's worth reading because it is quite clever , but not quite a masterpiece . I'd be interested in reading more from this author 3.5 rounded up.
This had a decent plot and premise I was interested in seeing where it went, however, the writing turned me off. There's no flow. It tumbles and trips over itself and yanked me out of the story.
Wow I really, really enjoyed reading this book! I loved how it was impossible to guess what would happen next!
One of the best thrillers i have read in awhile, all the twists that slowly get revealed, i pretty much saw coming but the last wist that revealed who killed Molly's husband Jay,I could not believe it was who it was i was completely wrong.
I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.
This opens with Jay's 40th birthday parry, which he celebrates with his wife Molly and three couples who are friends of theirs. Jay is murdered in the night and the novel is told from the perspectives of Molly (who turns out to have a secret tragedy in her past) and detective Rita. I found this a quick and reasonably compelling read, although I wish the balance had been more Rita and less Molly.
I struggled a little to keep the other three couples straight in my own mind and kept forgetting who was married to whom. The ending was quite exciting, although I don't really understand how the murderer kept disappearing off to do his murderous deeds without being missed...
Good book! This book had suspense, intrigue, action, Mystery! The storyline was very interesting and definitely had a who done it, such a twisted story and kept me glued to my kindle! I will definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
Thank you NetGalley, Kensington Books and Terri Parlato for providing me with an advanced readers copy of “All the Dark Places” in exchange for an honest review.
A single brightly lighted window, darkness outside, a dead branch of a tree. A perfect, slightly spooky cover.
A perfect couple, celebrating the husbands fortieth birthday. Jay is a beloved friend, psychologist and husband to Molly. They celebrate with their closest friends. The morning after Molly immediately notices something is wrong. She finds Jay murdered in his study! But who would do something that gruelling?
We get the dual perspectives of Detective Rita Myers and Molly. Molly is devastated.
I found the writing to be fluent. Short chapters switching between Molly and Rita. At first I had a bit of trouble keeping the different couples apart, who is married to who? But it got easier. It is slow paced and until the middle I wondered if anything ever happens, other than Molly trying to cope. Toward the end I got the actions and twists I craved for.
I loved that the author picked a strong female lead as the detective. Rita is close to 60 I think. I loved the experience and sincerity she brought. I would not mind reading about her in other books, she was that good. Always thinking about the old ways and secretly smiling at the way the young detectives behave these days. I liked that the focus was on the investigation and it seemed so real.
I did not guess the twist/prep at the end, but I was not even trying. I liked that you could just get absorbed in the book and enjoy the ride. Well written!’
I thought this was just ok. I feel like I’ve read books like this before. I found the writing to be clunky though. I loved the atmosphere.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, from Kensington Books and #NetGalley. Thank you for the opportunity to preview and review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Suspenseful, I was rocked with twists and turns I didn't see coming. I truly enjoyed this one from the very beginning.
Boston Detective Rita Myers has become accustomed to violence, she sees it every day on the job. Still, her newest case stands out – a successful psychologist murdered in his own home the night after his wife and friends through him a lavish birthday party. To Rita, this doesn’t have any of the hallmarks of a random killing, she’s sure that someone close to Jay is responsible for his death. Jay’s wife Molly is in shock and mourning the loss of the only man who knew the truth about her painful past. But as the investigation continues, Molly begins to learn things about Jay, things that are disturbing, to say the least. How well do we really know the people we sleep beside every night?
