Reading Between the Wines book review #5/115 for 2023:
Rating: 3 🍷 🍷 🍷
Book 🎧: The Girl on Wildfire Ridge (Detective Kay Sharp Book 4)
Author: Leslie Wolfe
Genre: General Fiction (Adult) | Mystery & Thrillers
Available now!

Sipping thoughts: Detective Kay Sharpe is back trying to find another killer in the mountains. One of the things I love about Wolfe’s writing is that you typically get a peek into the killer’s POV or their background. She always shows you what the killer is thinking or how they started killing without revealing too much. Other writers do this as well, but it is typically towards the end. Leslie Wolfe will pull you into the killer’s mind early on so now you are on the ride with the Detective and the police as well as the killer. This series is so good, and I cannot wait to read the next.

Cheers and thank you to @NetGalley and @Bookouture for an advanced copy of @TheGirlOnWildfireRidge.

This is the 4th book in the series. There are many sensitive subjects in this book. Some interesting twists. It was fast paced and lots of suspects to choose from. I love an unpredictable ending.

I am new to this author and series but let me tell you I am hooked. I think Kay is an interesting character, but not because of her tragic upbringing. I thought the plot was well written with unexpected twists. My only negative is how Elliott is written. Being a Texan, we don't talk in "hillbillyisms" during every conversation. We might throw one in occasionally, but not as often as Elliott does. Now, I have to get caught up on the series.

I have been in a reading slump for a while, and this was the first book I laid my hands on to try and break it, and I totally devoured it in one sitting, and couldn't wait to read number 2. The second one was even better, and now, having finished book number 4 in the series, I only have one question - why isn't there a book 5 yet???
The series features detective Kay Sharpe, and even though she is just human, she tries to be there for everyone, and solve every one's problems. The books were really well written, and honestly, I haven't read something so thrilling, gripping and entertaining in a very long time. This series is highly recommended, I promise you, just do it!

I will post this same review on all 4 books, as this is really applicable to all.

This is basically everything I want in a thriller. That is to say, a compelling mystery with a tinge of darkness. I will continue to read this series, which is honestly the best review I could give a book.

The Girl on Wildfire Ridge by Leslie Wolfe is the fourth book in the excellent Detective Kay Sharp series and what a roller coaster series this has been. I have loved these books from the beginning I was hooked from the start till the end especially as its full of great twists and turns throughout. On one hot summers day in the town of Mount Chester a seventeen year old local girl Jenna goes missing. No one has seen her. Within hours the case take an agonising turn for the worst when they discover a body of a young girl in the isolated mountains.
Detective Kay Sharp rushes to the scene, hiking for miles to the base of Wildfire Ridge. The body is of Jenna and from the markings on her body, it’s clear that she was brutally murdered. However, near the victim, Detective Kay Sharp, finds a butterfly-shaped hair clip with a set of fingerprints that could be a vital clue. An investigation is started and this small town is turned upside down. Kay learns that Jenna has changed dramatically over the past few months and she was no longer the popular girl who always wore a smile on her beautiful face. What had happened to her? Is this the key to her death?

The forensics come back from the butterfly hair found and the fingerprints don’t match Jenna’s.

Who do these belong to?

Detective Kay Sharp's blood turns cold when they finally make a break through on the finger prints and it is linked to her own past! It is the secret she has spent the last sixteen years trying to forget and bury deep in her mind. She never wants the truth to come out or anyone to find out as this secret will destroy her.

WoW this book is so good it will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and you may find it hard to put this ebook/book down.

I highly recommend this book 5 stars.

Big Thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

The Girl on Wildfire Ridge (Detective Kay Sharp Book 4) by Leslie Wolfe
Publisher: Bookouture
Genre: General Fiction (Adult), Mystery & Thrillers

The Girl on Wildfire Ridge is the 4th book in the Detective Kay Sharp series by Leslie Wolfe. This book can be read as a standalone mystery, but the series is totally binge-worthy that I say read them all!

This is such a fast paced read and I could not put it down. I was able to read this one in like 8 hours because I refused to do anything else!

I absolutely loved this book! Kay and Elliot make such a great team and I love what they each bring to the team. The mystery was intense! I loved the twists and turn and how many layers were involved in this! Once I thought I had things figured out, there would be another layer uncovered!

I really hope there will be more books in the Detective Kay Sharp series because I am hooked!!!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A teenage girl Jenna is found dead with terrible sexual assault injuries that she endured prior to her murder. Former FBI profiler Kay Sharp is determined to catch the killer but the investigation leads her to review her own family history...
The Girl on Wildfire Ridge is the 4th book to feature Detective Kay Sharp. It would work as a stand alone novel and there are no spoilers about previous cases.
Kay is greatly affected by this case as the victim is so young. There is plenty of evidence and the pathology and police departments are kept busy. They find evidence of date rape drugs and a disturbing website that could have been responsible for a significant personality change in the victim over the months before her death.
Then there is the added dimension of the link to her past which she tried to keep quiet and this distances her from her partner Elliot. The pair are both denying their feelings for each other so this further delays any advances to their relationship. Kay's past is not resolved in this book leaving potential for further developments in later books.
The book is written in the third person throughout. The opening chapter shows the victim's final moments but the majority is the police perspective. There are also some viewpoints from Jenna's friends and other teens which raise suspicions about the background of the case..
The Girl on Wildfire Ridge is a crime thriller full of emotion.

Another incredibly suspenseful, absolutely addictive page turner by this amazing author. Love this series and this book was just wow! Do read this one.

The Girl on Wildfire Ridge solved all my current mystery needs. I wanted a fairly fast paced thriller that wasn't too easy to solve or too "cute" like a cozy mystery and the novel definitely provided that. The mystery continued throughout the book without dropping major clues as to who killed Jenna, giving the reader several potential options.

I really liked the character of Kay Sharp and want to know much more about her history and back story. I plan to go back to read the first three books in the series, but I'll definitely be adding future installments to my list too. I want to see what happens in the future for Kay, besides solving more crimes.

Thank you to Bookouture for letting me take part in this tour. This is the 4th book in the series but could be read as a standalone.

This case is pretty tough. Jenna is only 17 and went through horrors that no one should go through. Detective Sharp manages to stay professional despite the case clearly affecting her.

Leslie has done an excellent job of creating a relatable and believable storyline with dire consequences. The book is well-paced and gives you just the right amount of tension and suspense. I struggled to put this one down I was furiously swiping page after page.

The story is full of twists that will leave you gobsmacked. Leslie draws you in so easily you feel like you are investigating right alongside Kay and Elliot. You become as invested as they are in finding the killer.

A thrilling, addictive read for those who love a police procedural.

Thank you to #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an advance copy of #TheGirlOnWildfireRidge by #LeslieWolfe the fourth novel to feature Detective Kay Sharp, set in the fictional North Californian town of Mount Chester.
When a 17 year old girl is reported missing Kay and her partner Elliot are on the case but her body turns up at the bottom of a cliff, she was dead before anyone knew she was missing.
This was a very good read, even though I haven’t read any of the previous books it was easy to pick up the back story, which in itself is a reason to keep reading.
I really enjoyed this book and will eagerly be buying the next one.

This was my second read of the Detective Kay Sharp series. Last year I’ve read the first book in the series and enjoyed it so I knew what I’m going to get with this story.

Detective Kay is surely making a new life in the town. She came back to help her brother. After leaving her job as an FBI agent, she joined the police department and helps with any murder or crime case that arises.

This time, we get into a darker story. Because at stake is not only the solving of a murder but her own life. And her brother’s, I might add. They both hold a secret that comes crushing dangerously close to all the clues in this investigation.

I enjoyed the writing and story overall. It is intriguing to see how the characters act in certain moments and what drives them to do what they do.

The suspense is high and the ending. That left room for more and while things are settled now, I’m really curious where the author will take us on this journey.

There are a few things that I had to skip, but that’s only my choice.

If you are a fan of interesting police procedural stories with lots of psychological moments, this is definitely a series for you.

🆓📖Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy and for my spot on the blog tour

I've read most of Leslie Wolfe's books and I enjoy her writing style. The Girl on Wildfire Ridge has a good plot, the characters are dense and they grow as the story grows. In this story, besides crime, she calls the reader's attention to bullying (unfortunately, really common in schools), the changes that occurred in society with the advent of the internet and phone chat apps, the lack of communication among teens and their families, and the existence of pure and simple cruelty and lack of value in life. It's a story that reflects the time we live in, written with elegance and smart language.
I downloaded a free copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

I love this series but I must admit that this installment was hard to read. The writing was great as usual, the case complex just as I like them, the characters quite well developed… You may ask, what was the issue then? The details of what happened the victim turned my stomach. They were not graphically portrayed but its just a sensitive subject that I struggled with.

Jenna was reported missing just a few hours before her body was discovered. She had been brutally murdered. Shocking details emerge on the weeks leading up to her death. A young, beautiful, vibrant social butterfly had turned into a recluse. She didn’t want to socialise anymore. Something had happened to dim her light. And then details of the bullying she went through came up.

I was curious to know who has killed her. At some point, I thought it was obvious but I should have detected a redd herring when I saw one. The bullying that Jenna had previously gone through was hard to read about. I was curious as to why she was being attacked. I wanted to know who was behind it and couldn’t wait for justice to be served.

Detective Kay’s character gets better with each new installment. In this case, she had to confront her past even as she struggled to resolve current issues. I enjoy her relationship with her partner, Elliot, and the ME. I can’t wait to find out what lies ahead for Kay.

This was a dark, fast-paced, captivating read despite the heavy themes. What a gripping read!

Many thanks to Bookouture, as well to NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of The Girl on Wildfire Ridge.

Former FBI Agent, Kay Sharp, has returned to her hometown and is now working as a detective. When a local seventeen-year-old girl goes missing the case takes an agonizing turn when her body is discovered in the isolated mountains, raped, and brutalized. The investigation takes a dark turn when Jenna is shown to have been crushingly bullied for months prior to her murder. It was heartrending and disturbing reading about both of those sensitive subjects.

The Girl on Wildfire Ridge is the first book I've read in the Detective Kay Sharp series and for me, it almost felt like dark adult subjects combined with a younger, Harlequin romance vibe.  When I reached the first 10% of the book, I read that Kay's detective partner, Elliott, was "resisting the urge to pull over on the side of the road to sweep her in his arms and seal those lips under a fiery kiss", and I was pretty sure this wasn't going to be the book for me. Honestly, there is not a thing wrong with enjoying that type of writing!! I'm just not one of those readers.

There was more than one twist and turn, the pace was fairly quick, and I found the characters to be interesting!
