Thank you, NetGalley for the ARC. This was a great collection of short stories. I received the audiobook and I enjoyed the voice and the cadence of the reader.
There were some really great stories, by some amazing authors. Pleasantly surprised by the Jack Reacher short story. If you are. a fan of these authors, or just like short stories you will enjoy this collection.
This mystery/thriller collection is eight short stories whose titles are inspired by Eagles songs. Each story was well written and perfect to read (or in my case listen to) in a sitting. You will find some new authors and some old favorites within the pages. I would highly recommend this collection!
I want to thank NetGalley, Andrew Child, Heather Graham, Reed Farrel Coleman, John Gilstrap, Rick Bleiweiss, Jennifer Dornbush, Amanda Flower, and Don Bruns and Blackstone Publishing - Audiobooks for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.
This collection of short stories was phenomenal. Some were better than others, but they were all really well written. They are longer stories than one would think of as a short story, but still a great length to read in a sitting. My favorite was The Last Resort, although the new Reacher story and the title story were both excellent as well. Highly recommend. I found new authors I will read from now on as well as old favorites.
Thank you to NetGalley for this audio ARC. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Hotel California is made up of eight different mystery stories, inspired but the Eagles albums of the same name. I thought that in itself was a cool little detail and I liked the idea of the contributors interpreting each title in their own unique way.
I enjoyed some of these stories more than I did others, as is usually the case with anthologies, but I think the favourite one was Pretty maids all in a row by Heather Graham, This particular story is a murder mystery that is set in New Orleans. It has creepy aspects to it and overall I liked how it was written.
I also really liked the narration of this, I liked that each story had a different narrator. Overall I liked this collection of crime stories, 3 stars.
Hotel California was an excellent collection of stories that surprised and intrigued me. Each was a standalone story that easily could have been expanded into their own novels.
My favourite was the title story, Hotel California, which paid a beautiful tribute to the song that inspired it, mixing lyrics into the plot and painting a beautiful picture of fame. My only comment was that I wish the ending had been a little longer.
An entertaining collection of dark and creepy stories by a crew of high-octane authors, with each story titled after a track on the Eagles' Hotel California album. Some of the top narrators are on the audiobook, which I enjoyed immensely. Like many anthologies, however, this is a handful of hits and misses. Although the final, titular story is wonderfully narrated by January LaVoy, the lyrics thrown in felt forced, and the conclusion was unfortunately predictable and somewhat unfulfilling. Favorite stories included Reed Farrel Coleman's "Victim of Love", Don Bruns's "Life in the Fast Lane", and Rick Bleiweiss's "The Last Resort".
This book has eight short stories by well know authors like Heather Graham. These stories are unique as they each stem from an Eagles song that ties to the storyline.
Quick easy reads - keep you thinking and loving the creativity of the idea behind the book.
This was a fun listen. All short stories that were thrillers and even some that left you hanging! I really enjoyed all the different authors and narrators.
Hotel California is a collection of short stories. I enjoyed the listening to the audiobook. At times I replayed one or two. The narration was very good and easy to listen to. They each brought the stories to life.
Thank you NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing - Audiobooks for the advanced copy for my review.
Imagine the Eagles album ‘Hotel California’, pick a song from that album, now write a short crime story using that songs title and one line of lyrics in the story. That’s what the writers of Hotel California have done. I don’t know if that was their process when they wrote these stories, but I think it’s incredibly imaginative and and such a unique concept!
I listened to the audiobook version and it does not disappoint. Each narrator seems to fit each story and brings each one to life. Each story is different with the the theme of crime, Eagles song title and lyrics of that song title to tie them together. Between dark, creepy, mysterious, surreal, and action packed there is something for every crime fan.
This is a collection of short stories with titles from Eagles songs . I am not an Eagles fan but a love a good short story collection and this did not disappoint. I am sure Jack Reacher fans will enjoy this short story by Andrew Child. I was happy to see Amanda Flower featured in this collection as I only know her from her cozy mystery books so, her story was a pleasant surprise.
The last story is Hotel California by Jennifer Graeser Dornbush. and had a unique way of inserting lyrics from the song into the story.
The narration was fantastic as it featured some of the top audiobook narrators in the industry.

Hotel California was a fun short story collection! All of the short stories are titled after Eagles songs, and I think that made it all the more fun. The authors are quite well known mystery authors, so it was nice to have all these great writers on one project. I don’t typically read too many short story collections because I’m always nervous that the stories won’t be fleshed out enough, but I think the authors did a great job with keeping this collection engaging and concise.
I find myself enjoying short stories more than I used to. I like that, when well written, you are quickly immersed and quickly have a resolution. It was especially fun that these are all thriller/mystery tales.
My favorite was probably Heather Graham's. I liked the setting and the characters and the clues she left for you to find the killer.
Wow! I really, really enjoyed listening to this audiobook! It hooked me from the first chapter and kept me glued to my seat!
This mystery-thriller anthology was intriguing from the beginning, with its title being reference to the famous Eagles song. Each story was named for a song, concluding with the namesake, Hotel California. From killers for hire to decades-long murder mysteries, this anthology is packed with action and mystery.
The first story, New Kid in Town, is meant to be an addition to the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. This was the story I liked the least. It gave very creepy-vibes, as the main character sleeps with a young lady who is described as not looking a day over 16. We find later that she is 18 but this still tainted the rest of the story for me.
In the final story, Hotel California, I did appreciate the author going out of their way to place quotes from the song in the text, however at some points it did seem to be a stretch.
3.5 Stars.
Each tale has you thinking you know what will happen and then something happens that you didn’t quite expect. It isn’t that it is 100% unexpected, it just wasn’t what you “typically” expect in a story. So word of advice—have NO expectations, because even if you do expect it and guess right, there will be something that happens that you weren’t counting on. My favorite story in it has to be the titular story “Hotel California” I gasped out loud a few times, especially towards the end because while I was expecting it, I wasn’t expecting it quiet like that.
Hotel California is a computation of eight short stories with titles taken from The Eagles songs! There is even a new Jack Reacher story thrown in! The authors are easily recognizable, and they did a nice job putting ink to paper here.
I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narrators. These short stories have grit, mystery, and thrills. With short story collections, there will be stories readers enjoy more than others. I enjoyed the new Jack Reacher (New Kid in town) the most!
Will your favorite Eagles title be your favorite short story as well??? One must read/listen to find out!
Very clever concept!
3.5 stars
✨✨ Book Review ✨✨
"A dangerous drifter, a hired gun, a grisly corpse—you never know who you’ll run into at the Hotel California."
This is a book of eight short stories written by different mystery writers. It took me a moment at first to realize the quick jump between the stories, but once I understood the format it was easy to keep up. Each story is well written and entertaining. Several having a really good twist at the end that I thoroughly enjoyed (would love to explain why but I don't want to risk any spoilers). This is a great book to read or listen to when you only have small pockets of time to digest a quick story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for this audiobook.
Release Date scheduled for July 12, 2022.
Eight short stories by some great writers that weave together rather well with titles of songs by The Eagles. Though they are well established, there are some authors that were new to me.
The first story is my first experience with Jack Reacher. I’ve neither read nor watched this character before. Never read anything by Child. “New Kid in Town” was a strong entrance into the journey. Jack Reacher reminds me of some other action characters I love. I’m not sure if I will read more of his books, but I think I may. Reacher is antisocial but seems to have a code. And he cannot pass up a chance to help.
Some other highlights:
“Wasted Time” by John Gilstrap. Politicians. Family. Murder. Really a stand out of the group. I need to read more by this one.
“Pretty Maids All in a Row” by Heather Graham. Another author I’ve heard of but never read. What is not to love about a story set in a New Orleans cemetery?
ARC review; expected release 7/12/22
Hotel California is a collection of eight Mystery-ish stories based upon the classic Eagles album of the same name.
As with most anthologies there is a mix of stories that enjoyed and others that left something to be desired. All and all I enjoyed the collection as a whole.
I listened to the audio version and each story is narrated by a different artist, some i was already familiar with and others were new to me, but all gave a solid performance.
The Stand out stories for me were:
Wasted Time by John Gilstrap: This told a story of raising political star, who happened to have a murderer for a brother. When his brother is released from prison early he is forced to reluctantly face his brother and his past while trying to stay out of the public eye.
Pretty Maids All in a Row by Heather Graham: This was a atmospheric murder mystery taking place in New Orleans that is creepy and well written.
Of Note:
There is a new / passing of the mantle Jack Reacher story; I’m not super familiar with the Reacher books but I believe this is the first entry with Andrew Child taking over his brother.
Hotel California’ by Jennifer Graeser Dornbush: This wasn’t my favorite but it’s style is unique as it takes lyrics right from the title song and incorporates them into the story in a way that makes sense if not completely seamless.
Big thanks to Netgalley and Blackstone Publishing for providing me with a chance to get in on this book early. I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
