I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A mixed bag of writing. Some will hold your interest, others you (like me) will skim through. Still worth picking up and giving a try!

Another collection of Best American, a collection I'm always looking forward to perusing to see what was popular in the previous pages. There were some articles I completely skipped here, but some gems!

The news cycle moves so fast that it can be hard to remember the critically important issues that haven't been in the news for a few minutes. The Best American Magazine Writing 2022 offers a time capsule from a year that already feels quaint, which is a shame because the articles are, without exception, thought provoking. From the fall of Afghanistan to the guardianship of Brittney Spears, these stories are still worth reading.

Over the past couple years I’ve been reading a lot more nonfiction. I enjoy it but often find myself thinking a full book is more info than I wanted on the topic - I would have appreciated it more as a long form article or series of articles or podcast.

The Best American Magazine Writing 2022 was a good confirmation of this theory. I really enjoyed learning about lots of different topics. And like most anthologies - there were some articles that were a better fit for me with many sections highlighted and shared with friends and other articles I skimmed through parts. Overall though I really appreciated the variety within this collection and look forward to reading future editions of Best American Magazine Writing.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the free ebook.

Here’s the thing. I got this book and was not fully aware of its contents until I was in the middle of the introduction. That was definitely a disappointing moment. I requested this thinking it would be a LITERARY magazine collection. Stories, poems, essays. While a story and maybe two creative nonfiction essays appeared, this was a compilation of magazine articles. Like, New York Times and Buzzfeed and whatnot. To say I was devastated would be fair. This is a compilation of normie magazine articles. Not what I’m typically looking for. So there’s that, and I don’t think there’s a way to come back from that disappointment, not fully.
Anyway, it was as is typically the case with compilations of any kind. A lot of things in here were really good. A lot were dreadfully boring. This book is LENGTHY. The thing about magazine articles (apparently) is that they are what newspaper articles don’t have time to be. They delve into EVERYTHING. I don’t know that I have that in me. But if you do, give this book a go. There is lots of great magazine writing in here.

The Best American Magazine Writing 2022 is as it sounds - a collection of essays ranging from political commentary to pop culture, reflecting the turbulent year that was 2022. If you're interested in a survey of the year's writing, this is certainly a good place to start. I thought the selection was well chosen and well presented.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the digital advance copy given in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is a great book if you're kinda tired of long books. It's has variety of topics. There's no way I could read every article but what I did read was engaging. I think this would be a great book for coffee table for yourself and guests to pick up and read. I definitely keep an eye out for yearly published.

The best things, about The Best American Magazine Writing 2022 are that I am able to read articles from a wide variety of publications that I normally wouldn't see, and that it exposes me to ideas and subjects I wouldn't normally seek out. All the articles are well written,; that goes without saying as they've won awards. But if you read through these you will feel so much more informed and smarter about the world around you.

The subjects covered were wide and varied, and I even enjoyed science articles I wouldn't normally seek out. But I would have to say my favorite article was written by author Ann Patchett about a house guest she acquires during covid.

I look forward to this compilation every year!

I like to read collections like these because I often find new writers that i enjoy without having to read a whole magazine article or book just to learn I don't care for the writing. It sends me out for looking for more writing by this particular author (such as Carina del Valle Schorske). The book also includes articles Ed Yong and Vivian Gornick, who I would recommend to you if you have not read these authors work before.

I loved dipping in and out of this collection of articles. Whenever i see an article that looks interesting while browsing the internet i save it to my clipboard to read later and share them with family and friends. This felt like a curated version of my practice with all the best articles saved for me. Hugely interesting reads, a great variety and a wonderful book to have on your nightstand for a quick read at night

"The Best American Magazine Writing 2022" is the latest in this series, edited by Sid Holt for the American Society of Magazine Editors and published by Columbia University Press. Every year, the press publishes a collection of the most noteworthy essays and articles published in the US over the year. It features publications from print magazines and online venues, with traditional heavy hitters such as the Atlantic and Harpers side-by-side with ESPN and Buzzfeed news.

The breadth of topics range from personal essays to ground-breaking science. Yet despite this variety, there is a sense of American zeitgeist, as common threads of media headlines, US politics and the COVID pandemic, run through the collection. I found myself excited and intrigued by space telescopes, the fall of Kabul, vaqueros, Britney Spears and even boxing. While the big names such as Ann Patchett and Kareem Abdul Jabber deliver impressive work, it was the essays by new-to-me authors such as Carina del Valle Schorske and Katie Gutierrez that really surprised and captivated me.

I highly recommend "The Best American Magazine Writing 2022" for readers who appreciate excellent writing and quality journalism. Thanks to Netgalley for offering me a copy of the book to read and review.

As an Indian reading a collection of American magazine articles of last year, I was prepared to be annoyed and underwhelmed. The image that USA and all its institutions project on this side of the globe is that of a non-existant superiority complex- on geopolitics, technology and global economics. The movies, novels, political maneuvers and even a recent memoir of a retired diplomat coming out of USA stamped this implied projection. Like one Indian TV anchor put it- four Americans sitting in a room, smoking cigars and solving global issues.

To be honest, a few articles in this collection of the best American magazine writing of 2022 reeked of this guardian attitude towards the world outside US. But most of the writings are neutral and balanced, some of them are enriching and opens up new perspective to an outside reader. The content is extremely varied, sometimes disturbingly so. You read about a deeply personal and moving account about the relationship between a writer and a cancer patient and immediately you are hurled into space in the next one. I had to pause between some articles to come out of the mental state that the previous article put me in.

My personal favorite writing is the one by Ann Patchett. It started like a celebrity name dropping game and suddenly transformed into a very deep and touching character study. The one about James Webb telescope made me feel proud of our achievements as humans. Our horizons are widening in a scale that we never believed was possible before. But then the piece about the abuse of guardianship industry tossed some of the excitement and pride out of the window and served as a bitter pill. Another strong writing was the illuminating first hand account of the power transfer in Afghanistan when US vacated.

But on the downside, there were essays that failed to elicit a response in me and served as vanity pieces. The opening essay about dancing at the time of pandemic was underwhelming when compared to the rest of the collection. Another one about the need of social reforms above biochemical prevention of diseases was outright stupidity. Take the case of how India, a land of extreme social variation, fought the war against the pandemic and lived to tell the tale. It was more on the strength of biochemical preventions that India did it. The one about an ornithologist's struggle to find peace with his adoration of a racist bird watcher devolved quickly into farce. The last piece curiously was a fictional account- with very low literary aspirations-of a boy finding attached to his male friend in rural India. I am not sure about its significance of its inclusion in this book.

A luxury that the reading of this collection now, in 2023, gives to its readers is that of hind sight. Though not much time has passed, not even a year, some of the drama that is developed in these writings have climaxed. I checked the result of the boxing match for which prominent social media influencer Jake Paul was preparing and found it on YouTube. James Webb has started gathering images from far reaches of time and our scientists are rewriting the history of the universe. Taliban has tightened its clasp on Afghanistan and is ruling the country with iron grip. Contrary to the suppositions, their rule is pretty uneventful though within predicted lines.

After completing this collection of 19 essays, I like it for its balanced selection of writings, love it for the extreme diversity of the topics and recommend it for the wealth of emotional and intellectual experiences that it offers.

I love the end of the year best American magazine wrighting, magazine. From science to human interest make up True Crime and much much more. There’s even an article by Karina Del Valle on passing the Corona epidemic alone in the studio apartment getting older and all that entails. This yearly anthology always offers some good reads. A wide range of publications are included as are a number of categories. So, from the New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, Harper’s, AARP and more as sources. Just two of the writers are Ann Patchett and Kareem Abdul-Jabaar. An example of a category is Winner-Essays and Criticism or Finalist-Service Journalism. Dip in and out as one wishes. Always walk away having read something interesting and worthwhile.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Columbia University Press for this title. All opinions are my own.

The Best American Magazine Writing 2022
Edited by Sid Holt for the American Society of Magazine Editors
Columbia University Press
Due November 29, 2022
***** ( 5 stars)

This is an anthology of magazine writers that have won recognition as finalists for their contribution to magazine writing in 2022. The topics are timely, and the research is evident in these articles. Magazines writers are criticized and overlooked alot, yet most of the most brilliant and wisest minds contribute to magazines and journals regularly. Subjects of Science, health, psychology and friendships are among the ones chosen for this anthology. Natalie Wolchover provides insight into the Webb and Kepler Telescopes that could rewrite cosmic history. Zachary Mider reminds of us of the correlation between methane gas and global warming. Kristin Canning calls for change in how we talk about abortion, while Vivian Gornick's riveting account of the lifelong effects of humiliation are essential. Katie Gutierrez's article on Vaqueros is unforgettable. Kareem Abdul Jabber reminds us that social justice can change lives and opportunities for people forever. Dotun Akintoye wonders if Jake Paul is bad for boxing, Rachel Aviv's has an article about Harvey Weinstein and Elizabeth Fotus, and Heidi Blake and Katie Baker remind us how American guardianship strips people of their individuality and autonomy, as with Britney Spears. These are just a few of what is presented.
There is so much to delve into here. These articles will make you ponder, wonder and possibly re-think things that matter to you.
Thanks to #netgalley for sending this e-book ARC for review.

As always, this anthology is an excellent review of the past year in the press. You will find here a wide range of topics, some obvious – like pandemics or abortion rights – and some wonderfully obscure, like one of my favorite pieces, The Original Cowboys, about the forgotten legacy of Texas vaqueros. Along with the typical reporting and essays, there are some examples of sports and science writing.

Thanks to the publisher, Columbia University Press, and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book.

Special thanks to Netgalley and Columbia University Press for the ARC of this book.

If you know me I love anthologies, some better than others.

This year's I happened to love. Going from one story to the next covering a wide berth of genres and topics.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a book of collections of essays and short stories for magazines. Really great this year. 5 stars
