SMITTEN KITCHEN KEEPERS by Deb Perelman is the most recent collection in this series, filled with "New Classics for Your Forever Files." It is an extremely appealing cookbook, filled with colorful photos of delicious looking food. As promised, it does lean to more time-honored favorites like apple crisp or pound cake. Sections include breakfast, salad, soup & starters, vegetables (big and small), meat (and shrimp), plus a variety of sweets and snacks. Each recipe begins with a picture and a paragraph or two of commentary, then lists ingredients and directions. Nutritional information is not provided, but additional notes (with suggestions on substitutes or freezing, etc.) often are. A nod to classics include choices like Little Gem Salad, French Onion Soup, or (skillet) Chicken Parmesan, but there are more unique offerings (like a citrus salad with radishes and hazelnuts for breakfast). Personally, I want to try the Challah Cheesecake Buns or Caramelized Cinnamon Sugar French Toast. Perelman does also set a reassuring tone with comments like "Don't fret if you don't have all of the spices called for. Use as many as you have; the fries will forgive" about Spiced Sweet Potato Oven Fries. Cooks will enjoy this beautiful text; however, I am a little surprised at the reliance on a heavier use of salt (e.g., adding two or three teaspoons of salt in Cozy Chicken and Dumplings) and even butter (e.g., two full sticks in the crust of Deepest Dish Broccoli Cheddar Quiche) in some recipes. SMITTEN KITCHEN KEEPERS received starred reviews from Booklist and Library Journal ("Essential for all collections.").
Get this book. No, now. Deb Perelman has written many cookbooks and hundreds of blog posts about cooking, yet this is the one you absolutely need. Homey, irreverent, and reading like the experience of cooking with a friend, the recipes are well chosen, simple to make yet hearty and instant favorites. She wins points from me for measuring in both volume and weight, given in grams, and providing Fahrenheit and Celsius temperatures, but mostly won me over with her morning egg and cheese sandwich, with instructions aimed at people who have too little time and yet want a bit of cozy food-based happiness. The vegetable recipes are mostly carbs with veggies added, but overall it's the best cookbook I've reviewed this year. Snag it now, make some of the recipes (alpine raclette bake, for example) for the holidays, and thank me later. I accept gifts in the form of either the delicious cheddar biscuits or the clam chowder.
I’m not a religious reader of the Smitten Kitchen blog, but I recognized what the book title referred to, so I thought why not to requesting it. That said, I have no idea if the recipes here are repeats from the blog or new for the cookbook.
If the rambling at the beginning of cooking blogs irritates you, this cookbook is not for you. If you like Midwest simple meals, this cookbook is not for you. If you have a picky kiddo to feed, this cookbook is not for you.
However, if you like bright and vibrant flavor combos, this cookbook IS for you. If you aren’t afraid to try a cooking technique beyond the dusty air fryer, this cookbook IS for you. If you have an adventurous family to feed, this cookbook IS for you.
One thing I do wish it did, was number the steps in the instructions. It makes it more reader-friendly, especially for neurodivergent brains.
Deceptively inventive and totally delicious...
A 100 recipes that are easy to prepare and make, with streamlined ingedients (most you have on hand) .
Incredibly simple in design and dishes you want to make and eat.
I particularly was partial to the spaghetti and meatballs, the tomato and corn cobbler and the desserts. From breakfast, to salads, mains and desserts, this cookbook as it all. Truly keepers you will make over and over again because they are deceptively inventive and totally delicious and easy. A good layout with tempting photos, you, too, will be smitten.
Recommend.
I love the smitten kitchen blog, and I was so excited to check out this book. I really like it because all the recipes are not necessarily easy but def doable for people even if they don’t have a ton of cooking experience. The recipes are all well written and easy to follow, and it has great pictures.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this advanced readers copy.
Run don't walk to your nearest bookseller and grab up this cooking guide!
It has every last recipe you will need in your adrenal!
I ran out of time to do a lot of cooking from this, but it seems like a lovely cookbook with reliable recipes that we have come to expect from such a standout as Deb Perelman. A great addition to any public library collection, readers will recognize Perelman from her popular blog Smitten Kitchen.
I love Smitten Kitchen and have been following the blog for years. I was really looking forward to previewing this book, but there are editing issues. So I'm rating this a 4 because the author puts out great recipes, but I really can't give it a five right now.
I enjoy all of the Smitten Kitchen content and this book did disappoint. Each recipe I’ve made so far has been approachable even as a novice home cook and each one has been delicious. Those that I have yet to make are calling to me and inspiring me to get back in the kitchen. The author’s conversational tone makes this feel like chatting with a friend about their favorite recipe rather than being lectured by a professional chef. All around loved this one!
Just wonderful! This book is packed with recipes that not only are flavorful, but doable! Deli pickle potato salad, an amazing cucumber salad, meatballs and spaghetti that have a coworker gushing about how good those meatballs are — just great all around! I will be trying more recipes soon and am sure they will be keepers also.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
This was great. No surprise. I love all the Smitten Kitchen, all the time. This one looked like the recipes included were designed with extra love and attention, and I am excited to have this one in the collection.
I can't wait to make more recipes from this book. I started off with Slow-Simmered Lentils with Kale and Goat Cheese because my garden is still overrun with kale. It was fantastic. Usually when I make this type of recipe my husband will ask where the meat is. This recipe is so satisfying and delicious that he never noticed it was meat-free. The recipes are clear and well written -- what else would you expect from a pro like Deb Perelman. This book will be a keeper, and, as much as I am enjoying early access with the ARC, I will probably by the book for easier access to the delicious recipes.
Do I need another cookbook when I’m terrible at planning ahead and seldom use them? No. Did I enjoy reading and looking at this? Yes, to the point where I’ll buy it, despite all that. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for book access in exchange for an honest review.
While I enjoyed looking at this book a lot is already online and this repetitive. I find this disappointing.
I’m sorry but I just had to do it- this book is a KEEPER! Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC. As soon as I finished looking at it I promptly ordered myself a copy to be delivered upon release in November.. this is a book that I will try every single recipe from. There aren’t any ingredients that I have to go to 5 stores to find which makes a recipe so much more accessible to me. And let me please add that the photos are stunning. Thank you Deb Perelman !
This will be a must-buy for my library based on the popularity of this author. I liked this cookbook a lot. It has yummy sounding recipes and great photography.
Darn, I’m trying to avoid buying any more cookbooks. But I’ll be making an exception here. Even though we’re pretty much a vegetarian family, there’s plenty here for everyone. So many a great recipes and fun to read too. Thanks to author, publisher and NetGalley for the review copy.
This was another wonderful cookbook from Deb Perelman (Smitten Kitchen)! I have her other two and will absolutely be purchasing this when it comes out. The recipes are accessible and delicious, with detailed recipes.
Thanks so much to the publisher and to NetGalley for giving me access to this book. This cookbook is amazing! Can't wait to recommend it to all my cookbook fans in my library. Perelman has never let me down in as cookbook author and continues to make great content.
This is a great addition to any cookbook collection. It is full of the delicious, approachable, and non-fussy recipes that Smitten Kitchen is known for.
