What a great book, Elly Griffith’s knows how to write a witty and entertaining and engaging tale.
I was rooting for Harbinder all the way through - it was a fantastic book.
Thank you for the opportunity to read it before release.
Elly Griffiths has done it again. A clever and addictive crime mystery where no one is really who they seem. This is the third in the Harbinder Kaur series and Elly is developing the character and her story really well. You could read this one on its own even though it does mention a few characters from the previous book however they have no bearing on this story. Word of warning: I had an ear worm for days (and a good chuckle) after the mention of the Elvis Costello song Watching the Detectives! 😂
Oh Harbinder how I’ve missed you. I do so love these books almost as much as the Ruth Galloway ones! She’s now Detective Inspector in London! She’s sharing a flat with other girls. She has to investigate a murder at a school reunion but is it linked to another ‘murder’ years ago and is one of her team actually responsible. And then there’s another murder, another MP. Too many things being overheard, do they actually mean anything. I had to tell myself to slow down reading it but I couldn’t stop myself. I needed to know how it all panned out and it wasn’t how I expected. Brilliant
Bleeding Heart Yard by Elly Griffiths
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Harbinder Kaur’s last two outings I was very much looking forward to finding out what turn her career had taken. Indeed she is now a DI in the Met and awaiting her first case. When that case lands it is a really high profile one involving a high flying Tory MP.
There is however an interesting back story to this as we know that Cassie, one of Harbinder’s team, is harbouring a huge secret which she has attempted, unsuccessfully, to banish for her memory. The fact is she has murdered someone!
The first case of Harbinder’s Met career takes her to a 21st reunion at an upmarket Chelsea state school which has produced a famous actress, a well known pop star and two politicians from either side of the divide. All of whom were at the reunion where Garfield (Gary) Rice the MP is found dead from a suspected drugs overdose. Harbinder suspects that there is much more to this case and believes that there are links to the past.
The story is told through the eyes of Harbinder, Cassie and Anna another of the people at the reunion. Each person adds their own perspective to the story as we gradually begin to unravel what went on 21 years ago. I really enjoyed Harbinder’s description of the people on her team and could picture Jake standing with his legs spread wide and Tory with her star struck attitude towards the suspects. Harbinder is definitely an interesting detective and doesn’t fit into the usual stereotypical female detective of much recent fiction.
I love the setting in Bleeding Heart Yard and the legends which surround the place and having eaten frequently at the restaurant mentioned in the book I can definitely picture the location. The ending is one that I didn’t anticipate at all and I really enjoyed the fact that Harbinder’s acceptance onto the team is heralded by her allocation of the nickname Susie!
This book was a real pleasure to read and I will the wholeheartedly recommending it at all my various book groups. I would like to thank Elly Griffiths, Quercus Books and Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
DI Harbinder Kaur has moved to London and her first case with her new team involves high profile victims and suspects who were all attending their school reunion. One of her team members also attended the school and the reunion and has a secret from years ago. A fascinating read which is well plotted and a page turner...... just what we've seen come to expect from this author. She never disappoints!
Thanks to Quercus books and Netgalley for an advance copy of Elly Griffiths' latest in the D.I. Harbinder Kaur series.
First off, I'm a big fan of this author. In my eyes she can do no wrong. Her books always have strong, interesting plots, very 'real' characters, and a sense of time and place, that creates a world and a book, to really lose yourself in.
This one is no exception. A plot which revolves around a murder at a school reunion, a group, or rather 'The Group' of characters whose lives we are drawn into, and the return of Harbinder Kaur. This time, D.I. Kaur is relocated to London, heading her own team, including the wonderful Kim, who I'd love to read more about, hopefully she'll reappear in further stories.
We are told whodunnit at the beginning of the story, or at least this character thinks they dunnit. But memories are strange things, aren't they, and not always reliable...
It was great to see Harbinder finally get a love life, her romance in this book is very sweet. Despite being a great detective, she misses all the clues that point to another character's desire for her, which was funny, but very realistic at the same time.
An easy five stars from me, highly recommended.
Thank you for the opportunity to read Bleeding Heart Yard by Elly Griffiths. Ella Griffiths is such a brilliant writer, so I had high expectations for this book. It definitely didn't disappoint. It wonderfully well written, with lots of twists and turns
Harbinder back in another case that keeps you guessing. Elly does an excellent job of perfectly mixing the main detectives personal life with the case. A loveable set of characters, none of which you really want to have dunnit. Can’t wait for the next Harbinder!
This was the first book I have read by Elly Griffiths, I know I have a couple of others on my kindle so now I will take time to find them. I have heard such a lot about this author so was very intrigued to see what the hype was all about.
DS Cassie Fitzgerald has a secret - but it's one she's deleted from her memory. In the 1990s when she was at school, she and her friends killed a fellow pupil. Thirty years later, Cassie is happily married and loves her job as a police officer. One day her husband persuades her to go to a school reunion and another ex-pupil, Garfield Rice, is found dead, supposedly from a drug overdose. As Garfield was an eminent MP and the investigation is high profile, it's headed by Cassie's new boss, DI Harbinder Kaur. The trouble is, Cassie can't shake the feeling that one of her old friends has killed again.
I really liked the book and can now understand so why many readers follow this author. A slow burn but a strong story that took me in, well paced and characters that enhanced the storyline. I very much enjoyed meeting DI Harbinder Kaur and her team and am sure there is a lot of room to grow for this newly appointed DI. I really was not sure who was committing the murders and felt the author did an excellent job of weaving the story with many read herrings that kept you guessing right up until the end. I will definitely be looking out for the next in this series.
Thank you to Netgalley the author and publisher for a copy of this book.
I always look forward to turning the pages of an Elly Griffiths novel, Bleeding Heart Yard is no exception.
Harbinder Kaur, has moved on with her life, since we last found her in The Postscript Murders. She has sat and passed her exams, is now a DI, heading a Murder Investigation Team in the Met. She is trying to forge a new, more exciting life, from that she had living in her parents spare bedroom in Shoreham.
DI Kaur’s first case is not a low key affair. The murder of a Conservative MP, with the complicating factor of one of her new team being a witness, and potential suspect.
Those present at the time of the murder, a 21 year school reunion, are a group of well known over-achievers. Tensions and years old resentments are still bubbling not too far under the surface.
Along with the engrossing story, and further character development of Harbinder, you will also find lots of lovely extra touches; which is the calling card of the author’s writing. So many little things that made me smile.
When one of the suspects gave their alibi as a meal in Pizza Express.
DI Akinyemi’s first law of crime scenes.
DI Kaur’s feelings towards Jake’s assertive body language. This is always my response when I see this ridiculous overly testosteroned body language.
Of course not forgetting Kevin, this gorgeous boy has a lovely cameo role in so many of the scenes.
Bleeding Heart Yard is my favourite book, in this series, currently sitting at 3 books. I thoroughly enjoyed the growth of Harbinder’s character, with hope for a happier private life. The new team are an interesting and eclectic bunch, and I look forward to meeting them again. I found myself turning the pages so quickly, as the book was so easy to read, the writing flowing so well. I highly recommend this 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read.
Another great read from Elly Griffiths. Nothing is quite what it seems! A school reunion results in the death of an MP and an old secret threatens to surface. Clever storyline and interesting characters.
This is book #3 in the Harbinder Kaur series. I have to be honest and say that I didn’t even know about this series, so was really surprised to see it was the third book! It can however be read easily as a standalone book. I’m a big fan of the Ruth Galloway series, so was interested to see how this series matched up to that one! Harbinder Kaur is a Detective Inspector, who has just moved up to the London from Sussex. She has a new team, new home and now a new case with the unexplained death of MP, Garfield Rice.
I really liked Harbinder Kaur’s character. She’s likeable, relatable and makes a refreshing change from some other female detectives which are around. Harbinder is as cool as a cucumber and as smart as they come at work but seems less so in her personal life. Her home life was just as interesting to read about as her work was, and it was fun to meet her new flatmates! As she’s new to the team, it was interesting to view her new team members for the first time, just as she did, and I did have some inward chuckles at her dry sense of humour regarding them. Her new team are just as likeable, and I’ll be interested to see more of them in future books (I hope there will be some anyway!) I did like the dynamics within the team and found that despite them being a mixed bunch of gender, race and sexual orientation, they all worked well together.
The storyline was gripping and had me hooked from early on. DS Cassie Fitzgerald’s involvement in the case was unusual and certainly not what I expected, and I enjoyed following her storyline to find out where it was going. The plot twisted and turned throughout and threw some curve balls into the story as it went. I had no idea of how it was going to end and even though I came up with some educated guesses, was proved wrong with an unexpectedly ending! The London location was great, and I loved the title of the book, prompting me to go looking for other unusual London street names! I wondered how on earth this author was going to replace Ruth Galloway, but in Harbinder Kaur she has found a worthy replacement. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have already searched down the first two books of the series so I can go back to the beginning! Would recommend!
This book is the latest in the Harbinder Kaur series, Harbinder is investigating a murder at a school reunion- which is not only her first case with the Met, but one involving a member of her team who was at said reunion and part of the group of friends that the victim was from.
While investigating the murder, the accidental death of one of the group after they’d all just finished their exams seems to keep cropping up- is the death now linked to one in the past? And is there more to that earlier death than there appears?
I really enjoyed the relationships in this book- the group of friends, Harbinder and her flatmates, and Harbinder and her colleagues, and Harbinder being given a nickname at work at the end, showing that she’s fitted in with her new colleagues.
The book kept me engaged, I wanted to know what happened and I felt the pressure Harbinder was under to solve her first case with the Met- probably more than Harbinder did!
There were 2 things that stopped me from giving this a 5/5 review- firstly that this is part of a series; this is Harbinder’s third adventure, but (other than the fact it stars Harbinder) there’s not much of that previous background. It wasn’t until the last section that we’re reminded of Benedict, Natalka and Edwin who featured so much in the other 2 books - and while I understand character progression and the changes to Harbinder’s life, I did feel they were just ‘tacked on’ at the end. The other thing that let it down for me was that chapters were written from different character’s perspective, meaning you sometimes had the same ‘scene’ twice- it wasn’t so much the repeat that let it down, but that at times I felt we were going backwards with the story, ie Harbinder would tell it, then move on to something else, then we’d go back to someone else’s view of that earlier incident. It just felt a bit disjointed at times. However, none of that really spoiled my enjoyment, and I’m looking forward to more Harbinder books!
I was given my copy of this book by NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book which opened in a school reunion. I thought it was interesting to have a police officer from the team be present and therefore a potential suspect. I also thought DI Harbinder Kaur was a good character and hope that future books are written with her as the main character. A good (although not completely shocking) tiwst at the end rounded off an enjoyable read. Got tolove a happy ending too!
Elly Griffiths is one of my favourite authors, has been since I read my first Ruth Galloway novel many moons ago.
I’ve had the privilege of meeting Elly a couple of times at author events and she’s always so lovely, so friendly and makes me love her all the more.
This is the 3rd Harbinder Kaur novel, and is as thrilling and gritty as you’d expect.
Written with all her usual grace and flowing storyline with characters that leap off of the page, it had me hooked from Chapter 1.
This is an excellent addition to the authors catalogue. I highly recommend this to everyone.
Harbinder Kaur #3 and I think possibly my favourite so far! Harbinder is now serving in the Met as a DI in the Homicide and Serious Crimes Unit and jolly happy she is too with her promotion. One of her team DS Cassie Fitzgerald has a big secret, so big she’s tried to wipe it from her memory bank. However, fate or something more sinister has a habit of resurrecting the past. The storyline centres around Manor Park School, a posh Chelsea State School with several well-known former pupils all contemporaries and former classmates of Cassie. At the 21st anniversary celebration of this golden gang leaving school, one of their number Conservative MP Garfield Rice is found dead, a suspected drugs overdose but Cassie suspects this links to the past. Is she right? The story is told via Harbinder, Cassie and Anna another school friend of Cassie’s. This is done so well as each voice is unique and adds to the growing intrigue.
First of all first of all, let’s reflect on Harbinder! I think Elly Griffiths has created one of the best female detectives around at the moment. I love hearing her “voice“, she’s such a character with her wry, droll comments which make me laugh and her thoughts often directed at one member in particular of her team! I can picture them too, Jake with his wide leg stance and much more likeable Kim. An excellent part of the plot is having one of their number, Cassie, at the centre of the investigation which could make things very difficult for Harbinder as the newcomer to the team.
The plot is excellent, there’s a lot going on with several subplots and the golden gang are good characters adding plenty of colour as we have two MPs, a famous actress and a well-known musician which means there’s never a dull moment. The fast paced plot builds well, there’s plenty of tension and your suspicion antennae twitches in several directions. The ending is one of those never saw it coming scenarios and I do so like a finale like that! I love how Harbinder becomes ‘Susie’ to her team at the end - you’ve arrived girl!!
I really enjoy the use of London that the author utilises so effectively and creatively including legends and stories which add an extra frisson of atmosphere. I think London gives way more scope as a setting much as I love Sussex!! Looking forward to number 4 with eager anticipation!
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Quercus for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
A very compelling read in this new series by Elly Griffiths. Fans of the Ruth Galloway mysteries can take heart from the fact that these new characters are just as engaging and the stories are just as involving.
Bleeding Heart Yard by Elly Griffiths
I love love love any book by this author , she has been up there as one of my favourite authors from the moment I read her Ruth Galloway series.
When I heard she had also started writing about other characters / series of books I didn't think they would be as good . I was wrong and I really like reading her Harbinder Kaur ones.
The book takes you on a fast paced plot with a few twists and just when you have an aha moment and think you've solved it , off it goes into another direction !I
Can't wait for the next one..
I would like to thank the author, the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. I really enjoyed reading this book, it kept me guessing all the way through, and each time I thought I had worked it out another twist came along. Definitely recommend this book.
Another fabulous read from Elly Griffiths whose writing seems to get better and better with each book. Harbinder Kaur is now a Detective Inspector living in London and her first case involves a murder at a school reunion whose alumni include a rock star, a famous actress, two MPs and her own Detective Sergeant. The investigation is gripping but even better is the interplay between the characters voiced through several POVs. A twisty, page-turner of a murder mystery which is elevated into a superb book by the wonderful characterisation which Elly Griffiths is so fantastic at portraying.
