"The Nanny" by Ruth Heald is a gripping psychological thriller that delves into themes of trust, betrayal, and the dark undercurrents of family life. The story revolves around a woman who takes on a nannying role for a seemingly perfect family, only to discover that things are not as they appear.

Heald’s writing is taut and suspenseful, effectively building an atmosphere of tension as secrets begin to unravel. The characters are complex and well-developed, with their motivations and backstories gradually revealed, adding depth to the narrative. The protagonist’s perspective provides insight into her struggles and moral dilemmas, making her journey relatable and engaging.

The exploration of themes such as motherhood, loyalty, and the quest for belonging adds emotional weight to the story. As the nanny becomes increasingly entwined in the family's lives, the lines between right and wrong blur, leading to shocking revelations that keep readers on the edge of their seats.

The pacing is well-executed, with twists and turns that maintain a sense of urgency throughout the novel. Heald expertly balances moments of introspection with gripping suspense, making it difficult to put the book down.

This book is filled with twists and turns. The story is told over dual timelines. This is a complete page turner and contained many shocks.

Haley is happily married to Lars and they have a daughter Alice. Her mother Susan also lives with them as she has Dementia and Haley looks after her and Alice.

The couple take in a lodger to help pay the bills. Johanna is a young woman who has a striking resemblance to someone from Haley's past. A past she has tried very hard to forget!!

Twenty years previously Haley was a nanny to an English couple living in Thailand. She was going to use the money she earned to travel around Thailand. She bonds and cares for the children but the couple expect too much of her as she is virtually looking after the children alone, doing all the housework and doesn't even get to see her friends.

When an accident occurs Hayley is arrested for taking their daughter Chloe, but is later released. Chloe was never found.

This a great twisty thriller going back and forth in time in Hayley's life. I had trouble putting this book down!!

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

Very mediocre writing, story that was predictable and odd. Love a good thriller but this just wasn’t’t good

Hailey was a nanny 20 years ago when the child she was in charge of disappeared. Her life was in shambles because of this and she had to get away. She started her life over and was a mom herself when, in present day, a young woman shows up on her doorstep. Who is she? What does she want? Ughhhh this book was AMAZING! I seriously had so many questions and I couldn’t stop reading. I left my family to fend for themselves and read this book instead in one sitting. I have seriously been recommending this book to all of my friends since. Super suspenseful and fantastic!!

In the past, 19-year old Haley is backpacking in Thailand. She takes on a. job as a nanny for David and Julie, a wealthy couple. Haley instantly bonds with their baby, Chloe. However, a terrible mistake leads to Chloe's disappearance. David and Julie blame Haley. Haley is let go from her nanny job and returns home.

Fast forward 20 years, to the present. Haley is still traumatized about what happened to Chloe. Haley now has her own family, but is still unable to forget Chloe. One day, a young woman shows up on Haley's doorsteps. And this woman looks so much like David. All the secrets that Haley has kept hidden from her family are on the brink of being exposed. Who is this woman and what does she want from Haley?

What an amazing thriller! One of my favourite thrillers of 2022. I was on the edge of my seat. I could not put this one down - I had to know what was happening to Haley and what happened to Chloe in the past. The book goes back and forth between the two timelines. This is done really well and is not confusing or messy.

I thought I had the ending figured out, but was totally wrong! The suspense kept building throughout the novel leading to an exciting reveal at the end. It was fast-paced, twisty, and entertaining.

This novel was incredibly well written. This was my first read from Ruth Heald. I cannot wait to read more by her! Brilliant work.

Thanks netgalley for this book, I enjoyed it though it got a bit boring in the middle then it got more interesting.
Hayley was a nanny to a very wealthy family in Bangkok she looked after two little girls from the husbands first marriage and a baby from the second.
She was treated very badly and the mother hardly gave the children any love.
Hayley adored the children and looked after the baby most of the time .
Until one day the baby went missing and Hayley was accused of the kidnapping.
She managed to get away from Bangkok but this part of her life never left her until someone started looking into what happened in Bangkok and the nightmare started all over again.

This is going to sound like a negative review, and although there were certainly annoying elements I still really enjoyed reading it and seeing it unfold. Please remember that when reading the rest of my review.

It was a bit obvious at times. I had guess the ending way before it got there.

The story was good, but occasionally it felt like the author had started it, but had no idea where it was going to get to her imagined ending and changed her mind on a few things.

Quite a few times there were sentences needlessly repeated throughout different chapters or sometimes in the next paragraph.

I would still definitely like to read another by this author. This was my second, and although improvements can be made I have enjoyed reading both

A well plotted psychological thriller that will keep you turning pages told through dual timelines coming together to a great conclusion! I thought I had it all figured out but was pleasantly surprised with a few unexpected twists. I would definitely recommend The Nanny and I'd like to check out more of Ruth Heald's books to see if there as good as this one.

And Ruth Heald does it again. What a story!! Highly recommended 5 starrer!

Hayley is doing ok for herself. She enjoys her job as a student supporter, is happily married to Lars, her Swedish husband, and has a lovely 5-year-old daughter called Alice. Her mother has recently been diagnosed with dementia and has moved in with them, but they are managing with help from a carer called Michelle. However, Hayley still finds her past creeping into her every day, of which she has kept a secret of from Lars and her mother. Hayley was 19 and ended up as a nanny when travelling through Thailand with her friends. She adored the 3 children she looked after for a British ex pat couple but when one of the children went mysteriously missing, she was blamed, and it’s a part of her life that she is ashamed of and would rather forget about. When Lar’s business starts to have financial difficulties, he and Hayley decide to get a lodger and when Johanna turns up, she is perfect; kind, nice, tidy and gets on really well with Alice, Lars and Hayley can’t believe their luck. But is Johanna all she seems especially as Hayley recognises her from somewhere? At the same time one of Hayley’s students she supports, Ryan, wants to write a book and when he finds out about the Thai case he feels it is the perfect material for a true crime book and maybe, just maybe, he can find out what happened to the missing child, but Hayley doesn’t want him digging around in her personal history especially as Lar’s knows nothing of what happened. When a cryptic note arrives threatening Alice’s safely Hayley starts to wonder who she can trust and if her past will really be able to stay in the past or is the life she knows about to shatter into tiny pieces when all her secrets come out?!

Perfect quote for Hayley in this book, “Oh what a tangled web of lies we weave when first we practice to deceive”!
This was great! What a tense story of which I was intrigued from the very first page. It felt every chapter ended on a cliff hanger, so I was pretty pleased that the chapters were short as I was constantly desperate to find out what happened. Once again life was getting in the way of me reading and I wanted everything to just go away so I could sit and read but that’s always the sign of a great book. I figured out the first twist shortly before it was revealed but it didn’t spoil the story for me at all as I definitely did not see the second twist coming at all and I was most definitely surprised.

Another great story from Ruth Heald, she never disappoints me. Very very deserved 5 star book! I can’t wait to read her next book.

Thank you to NetGalley, Ruth Heald and Bookouture for my advanced reading copy. Out now.

This is the best thriller I've read in a wee while and there were lots of twists and turns.

I liked the dual timeline and felt there was a good balance between the amount of time spent in each.

I wasn't particularly keen on any of the characters to be honest and the choices that they all made were just utterly mind boggling, in particular Hayley constantly being subjected to Julie's behaviour and yet she still stayed.

I felt quite on edge when we were in the Thailand apartment as the author did a really good job of setting the scene and the levels of anxiety.

I was really glad of all the different twists and turns, some of which I didn't see coming, as the last few thrillers I've read have been quite predictable so this was a nice escape from that.

Overall would absolutely recommend this.
