Thank you Netgalley and Inkubator Books for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I really wanted to like this book, but it just kept falling flat for me. I don’t know if it’s because I read a lot of thrillers, but for me this book seemed like so many stereotypical thriller tropes shoved together and ultimately wasn’t unique and just seemed like a bunch of other books I’ve read shoved together. The premise is what really got my attention in the first place, but once I actually got into the book I found the plot predictable and the characters one-dimensional.
Wow what an exciting read! Miranda Rijeka knocks it out of the park again. Such a great writing style and excellent delivery. This one hooked me from page one and just never let go. Highly recommend!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book
This is a fast, easy summer/beach read if you like mysteries and thrillers. It was my first Miranda Rijks book and I really enjoyed it. It’s only 244 pages and I finished it in one day. The main character Daisy suffers from terrible insomnia. She started out as a journalist for a major newspaper and now writes for a small magazine because the insomnia has negatively affected her career. A new wellness spa specializing in sleep issues approaches the magazine for a review and Daisy’s boss sends her off for a complementary week there. But all is not as it seems at the spa… the owner Amity has lured Daisy there for a specific reason (and it’s not to help her with her insomnia). With the clues provided, it was pretty easy to figure out what Amity’s issue was with Daisy, but there’s another twist that I did not see coming. It’s a quick fun read, I recommend it, and I plan to read more books by Miranda Rijks. Thanks to #netgalley #inkubatorbooks and #mirandarijks for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was absolutely drawn into the excellent characterization of the mail character and expertly constructed story. I enjoyed this book immensely.
Daisy suffers from Insomnia and have struggled with it for the past 12 years. She is invited to a Spa that is a sleep clinic and the wonderful Amity vows she will cure her of her Insomnia. There is so much more to it with terrible secrets and horrible discoveries.
I really liked this book, it has really good thriller vibes, but could have had more creepy moments. I would have loved to see more of Daisy's sleepless nights and the horrors she endures but that was a bit short. Amity comes across as devoted and we get a really shock to uncover what her true agenda is.
Well developed and really fast paced I found this a really enjoyable read.
Thank you Netgalley and Inkubator Books for this ARC copy.
Thanks to Netgalley, Miranda Rijks and her publisher I was able to read The Insomniac prior to its release date later this month.
Miranda is one of my favourite authors, and this new installment did not disappoint! I was gripped from the beginning and having had minor bouts of Insomnia myself from time to time I could really relate to Daisy in those moments of her frustration and exhaustion.
I sped through this read in less than a day and thats with breaks in between doing other things! I just wanted to keep reading and to find out exactly what was going on at this clinic and piece everything together.
It was a fabulous read that kept you in a state of unease throughout with moments for panic and fear. Miranda has always managed to do that to you when reading her books. It's probably why she is one of my favourite psychological thriller authors!
A journalist, Daisy, who suffers with chronic insomnia is given a free stay at a spa and sleep clinic in exchange for a review in the magazine she writes for. But things at the spa do not go at all as Daisy expected. A very quick read for the summer, but very predictable.
Daisy, a journalist, gets a chance to treat her chronic insomnia in a new luxury spa and wellness.
Daisy has been struggling with insomnia for quite some time. When it starts affecting her work her boss gives her a chance to visit The Serenity Spa, where she will get to try their new insomniac program. Her job is pretty simple, try to get rid of her sleepless nights and then write an honest review for the magazine. The therapy part of recovery focuses on her past and figuring why she started having problems. But Daisy isn't prepared to share her dark secret, especially when she starts to feel like the methods used are questionable.
Rijsks has a rather simple writing style that works perfectly for this light psychological thriller. The writing flowed nicely and the pacing of the book was well thought of, which made this an easy read.
The plot of the story isn't complicated and twisty which isn't a bad thing in this case, since the writing compels you to stick with Daisy and see what will happen to her.
The story is written in dual POV's - Daisy's and her therapist Amity's. At some moments I wasn't very fond of Daisy and her behaviour but I enjoyed the character of Amity very much.
I would recommend it to someone looking for a light thriller, someone in a reading slump or for a reader who is just getting into thrillers.
4.5 stars
I loved this book. I’m a fan of a duel pov, when done well, and this one worked just right! The tension and twists were great and the characters relatable. I’ll definitely be looking for more by Miranda Rijks
Miranda Rijks knocks it out of the park again! Her latest psychological thriller, The Insomniac, is another winner. Daisy is a journalist who has suffered from insomnia for many years. As someone who has struggled with sleep issues, I know how frustrating it is to be drop dead tired but not sleepy, and how it affects your mental and physical well-being. Daisy is offered a life-line when she gets a work assignment for an all-expenses paid luxury sleep clinic resort in return for writing an article about it. She doesn’t really know what she is getting herself into. While Sirinity is beautiful and pampering, it is also very isolating and intrusive, as she must relinquish her technology and subject herself to probing therapy. The owner of the spa, Amity, has her own agenda. The novel is told from both womens’ points of view, and you come to realize there is a past connection between the women. I raced through this to find out what connected the women, and how the story would play out.
This author always writes a good psychological thriller and again with this book did not dissapoomt,I think at one time or another all of us have suffered with insomnia so can relate to the feelings described and the frustration etc
Well written and tense, another hard nit to finish in one setting read from this author
The Insomniac by Miranda Rijks was a phenomenal, intriguing and brilliant thriller!
I've enjoyed her previous books and this one showed me just how amazing she truly is.
The plot was intense, powerful and thrilling and held me captive all the way through! The characters fairly leaped off the page, and the tension was palpable. If you are looking for a twisted read that you just can't put down, then this is definitely the book for you!
It has a totally engrossing storyline with a puzzle that kept me captivated and unable to put it down until I finished it in the early hours of the morning.
“I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
Inkubator Books,
Thank You for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
Thank you NetGalley , Inkubator Books and Miranda Rijks for letting me read “The Insomniac” in exchange for an honest review.
”Daisy can’t sleep. But the cure is her worst nightmare.”
The cover is kind of generic. Different shades of blue, a blurred out face of a dark haired woman. I most likely would have walked by, if not for Miranda Rijks. I really like her novels and way of writing. I always find myself entertained.
Not being able to sleep, my personal nightmare, I must say. I love sleeping, I can’t imagine what Daisy must have gone through.
Meet Daisy. Some years shy of forty. She once had this dream to climb the ladder as a journalist. Investigate, get a byline, become an editor. It did not quite turn out like that. One huge reason for that is Daisy’s chronic insomnia. Two hours of sleep a night, three of it is a great one. Yuck.
Daisy gets invited to “The Serinity Spa” in exchange for an honest review on her paper. The spa is luxury and everything one can dream of. But Daisy feels uncomfortable. She has her own secrets to hide. What is the mysterious owner - Amity - up to??? She seems to be using hypnosis to dig out Daisy’s darkest secret. How do the two relate to each other?
It’s a well thought out psychological thriller. I like Miranda Rijks’ style of writing. I found the characters well thought out and relatable. What I really liked was how well the locations were pictured. I absolutely enjoyed this FABULOUS read! Definite recommendation!
I’ve loved all of Miranda Rijk’s books and this one certainly didn’t disappoint. It might even be her best yet!
The plot is unique, intriguing and dark. The writing is fast paced with plenty of twists throughout.
This is a fabulous psychological thriller that I’d strongly recommend.
I thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me an ARC copy for my honest review.
First of all, in my opinion, the name of the book and the front cover are to-the-point.
A small time journalist, Daisy, has two beautiful children and a loving husband. She also is a blogger in her free time. Sounds perfect right? But Daisy suffers from chronic insomnia. Her husband feels it has become worst because of the financial problems they are facing.
When she gets a free chance to visit Serenity Spa that claims to cure sleep problems, for her honest review in her magazine, even though she is reluctant to leave her children, her husband encourages her to go.
The spa seems like the best solution with it's stunning seaside location, beautiful rooms and exquisite cuisine. Clinic owner and chief therapist, Amity, seems totally put together. But as the sessions go on. Daisy feels something is amiss. Along with different treatments. Amity uses hypnosis to probe deep into Daisy’s past which has a terrible secret. Feeling insecure and scared, she just wants to go home. Is there something sinister plot at play or she’s going crazy?
The book is told from POVs of Daisy and Amity. Both these characters are well written. The locations were described in such a way that I felt as if I was present there. The plot at the beginning felt a little slow, but when it picked up, I just couldn't put it down. I usually predict plot twists, but with this book, I didn't see it coming.
This book was a true psychological thriller experience for me. And I can't believe that this is my first Miranda Rijks book, but I'm sure definitely not my last one.
I received an advance copy of this book for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was an utterly gripping and well written book with a twist that I did not see coming.
The story is about a woman Daisy who suffers cronic insomnia which affects her marriage, job and health to a huge extent. Daisy (who is a journalist) is offered a free stay at a luxury spa which promises her a cure. However all is not what it seems and Daisy feels increasingly paranoid and threatened.
The story is written from two main points of view Daisy and the owner of the spa Amity. Both characters are well developed and can be empathised with. Despite having very different viewpoints.
Without giving too much away both women are connected by events which happened in the past which are gradually revealed throughout Daisy's stay. The tension is slowly ramped up and the twist when it came took me completely by surprise.
This was a fantastic read and I'm very much looking forward to sampling more from this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read this one.
This is an author I always enjoy reading and this time was no exception.
I suffer off and on with insomnia so I could relate to some parts of how difficult it is when you are trying to function off of little to no sleep.
This book did not disappoint and I finished in barely two sittings.
“𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝟒 𝒂𝒎 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒎𝒚 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒔.”~𝑷𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒚 𝒁. 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆
I have struggled with sleep issues most of my adult life. There is no worse feeling that being desperately tired and in need of sleep, yet it refuses to come. This is the case for wife and mother Daisy, whose insomnia has raged on for years. It's now threatening her job as a journalist because she can't focus and keeps forgetting deadlines. Salvation comes in the form of an assignment from her boss...an all-expenses-paid stay at Sirinity, a luxury spa that specializes in sleep disorders.
Daisy is unsure about the spa from the moment she arrives. She didn't know she was going to have to relinquish her cell phone and laptop, but the affable spa owner Amity puts all of her fears to rest. Daisy is determined to do whatever it takes to banish her insomnia...everything except confess the real reason why she can't sleep. But Daisy is worried over nothing because someone at the spa already knows her secret and is determined that she continues to suffer.
I was absolutely riveted by this thriller and felt so much empathy for Daisy and her sleep-addled brain. The things that were happening to her at the spa that were shrugged off as accidents or worse, hallucinations, made her feel like she was losing what was left of her grip on reality. I have spent many nights lying awake in the dark feeling like the lone survivor of some apocalypse while every bad decision I've ever made played on a non-stop loop in my head. If you can relate or just love a good twisty thriller, THE INSOMNIAC will be available for purchase on July 24. Thank you to the publisher and the author for my early copy.
Miranda, Miranda, Miranda, you did it again, kept me up reading the Insomniac well into the night as I knew I couldn’t sleep without finishing it. One of my favorite psychological thriller writers delivers another fast paced, character driven dramas with an intriguing plot. One where you know the lines will be drawn by the end but are constantly blurring while the story unfolds. Daisy is an intriguing woman whose present day bravery unravels the sordid truth behind a incident which happened when she was younger and decidedly not brave. Recommended!
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, from Inkubator Books and #NetGalley. Thank you for the opportunity to preview and review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
A fast read, easy to do in one sitting. Creepy, thrilling, full of suspense and intrigue.
