This is the comprehensive book about The Sims; the creator and his story behind, the evolution of the game, what to expect when playing the game, The Sims is the beginning of a life-inspired game, where you can manage your Sims life, then fell in love, start a family and the daily life you might imagine you can have. The book itself is quite thorough for those who wants to learn what this game about before engaging in it.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
The Sims is a handy little guidebook for adults and children aged 8+ explaining the history and how to play The Sims. As a player of the game I know all what the book explains but I enjoyed reading about the history of the game and how it got created. The book has photos of the game over the years and handy little 'Did you know' boxes throughout which were fun little facts about the game.
This would make a great book for newbies to the game, parents wanting to check out what the game is and if it's suitable for their child, children to learn about the game and experienced players who want to learn about the history of the game.
While this discusses your Sims needing to put out the trash, mow the lawn and so on, no mention is made of them needing to read a book. Surely that should increase their stats a lot more than much else they have to do in their artificial lives? They needn't read this one, of course – they could be seen with a well-thumbed copy of Dickens' "Hard Sims" perhaps – but for those who know that young adopters of non-fiction will prefer books about things they already know and love, it makes sense to put this under the noses of some of the exceedingly large (and expensive) franchise's many fans. They will find copious full-page images, and where text is allowed to enter things it comes as caption and box-out as well as main narrative. It's a quick read, as are the other two of these I've seen, but there's little to fault when considering the target audience.
This book is for anyone who has never played The Sims before, and probably more for an older child, ages 7+. I am a 35 year old millennial, and have played every Sims game at some point in my life (including expansion packs of each). I did appreciate the historical portion of the creator and how the game started, etc, however, I didn't learn anything new in reading this short book. I think if an parent was curious as to whether they should buy this game for their kid, this is a great intro. If a child or teen is interested in playing and wants to know the meat and bones of what the game is, this would be perfect for them. It would be amazing if EA Games were able to include this playbook on the website for potential players to check out. Basically, if you're a seasoned player, this book doesn't add anything you don't already know except the backstory of how the game was created. If you're a new player, or future new player, this is a pretty good primer to read about the fundamentals of gameplay.
This book is awesome! It gives all of the background information about the Sims game including: how to play, the history of the game including who created it and how it became popular, interesting tips and tricks, cool facts and anything else you might need to know about the book. Using pictures, text boxes and other non-fiction text features, this book is set up for readers to learn and research. It would be a great high interest book for reluctant readers and a great chance to introduce readers to non-fiction texts. As a Grade 3 teacher I would 100% recommend this book to other teachers in this grade level and I'm excited to check out the rest of the series! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!
There is a good example of what it is like playing the game to start the book. It gives the history, basics, has a did you know section. This could be used for text features in an elementary classroom because it has bolded words, captions, and side bars. I think kids would enjoy this book.
A great read if you're a fan if The Sims, some good information and tips! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.
A short book about the game The Sims, that I feel comes a bit late? The Sims has been out for ages now.
This book gives information on the background, formation, and different ways to get around the multiple best selling games out there. The Sims!
I'm a huge Sims fan, playing since Sims 1 back in 2020. I was excited to see a little book about it, and hoped to learn something new!
The cover page and one page inside the book are confusing, showing Sims on a phone screen. It's mostly played on PC or console, so the choice to have a phone screen in those pictures is odd to me. It sends the message that this is a mobile game, which, except for some less-popular, specific mobile releases, it's not.
This book is clearly targeted at kids, and I'm well out of that age range (about to topple over the hill), but it still held some valuable nuggets for me. It was interesting reading about the history of Maxis and the creation of The Sims. The explanation of custom content was nice, too.
The layout of the book could really use another looking-at. The topics jump all over the place, moving forward in time and then spending a good number of pages on social media related to the game, then jumps back to game expansions including one from TS2. It was unexpected and jarring. There needs to be a better flow or change from one topic to the next. I'd also personally prefer more talk about the actual game and much less (or none) about social media, but I suppose that's included here to appeal to the younger audience. Even then, as a parent, if my kid was reading this book I would especially prefer there not be talk of social media, as it shouldn't be so prevalent for young'uns.
All in all, it's a neat little book for Sims fans or those who may want to learn a little about it before trying it out.
