Review in progress and to come.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review
I absolutely loved this book - it is a 4.5 star (rounded to 5) - the writing style is very witty and fun to read. The main character Amber, you just want to root for her. The basic gist is Amber comes from a family of grifters, upon trying to go onto the straight and narrow path she gets abducted by a serial killer, but is then saved by a mysterious woman. She then gets involved in a game of cat and mouse with a serial killer...or are they??? against the backdrop of Las Vegas. The writing style reminds me a lot of Janet Evanovich. I had a blast hanging out with Amber and the cast of characters. I would love to see another book with Amber and see what other messes she can get into and out of.
I read the synopsis as a "funny thriller" and wasn't sure what to expect. However, this may be a new favorite genre of mine! I have never read anything like this and had SO much fun. I was laughing out loud while simultaneously wanting to know what is going to happen. I flew through this book and will forever be searching for something like it!
Interesting story, it drug a little at the end but overall enjoyed! Rounded up from a 3.5
Thanks to Netgalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review
it feels like its still in the first draft.
I wish I could like it but the writing was horrible, I hated every single character.
Thanks to netgalley and the author for an eARC in exchange of a honest review.
The description of this book made it an automatic must read for me: “Amber Jamison can’t believe she’s about to become the latest victim of a serial killer. She’s savvy and street smart, so when she gets pushed into, of all things, a white windowless van, she is more angry than afraid. Things get even weirder when she’s miraculously saved by a mysterious woman . . . who promptly disappears. Who was she? And why is she hunting serial killers? “
The mysterious woman makes Amber promise not to tell law enforcement about their encounter, and Amber has no problem making that promise due to a past she is trying to outrun. When Amber sees law enforcement coming out of her apartment building a few days later she goes on the run and ends up in a seedy Las Vegas motel, where she us befriended by a noir-obsessed motel manager and a sex worker. Her luck gets even worse when she is hunted by yet another serial killer. This is a quirky, laugh out loud dark comedy reminiscent of Dexter with a flawed heroine and amusing supporting cast of characters.
Thank you to NetGalley, G.P. Putnam's Sons, and author Michelle Gagnon for the ARC of this book.
4.5 stars, rounded up! I'm not a huge thriller reader, but after reading the blurb I had high hopes. I love rooting for a morally ambiguous protagonist, and the main character, Amber, definitely delivers on that front. The nitty gritty Las Vegas setting was perfect for the story and it makes me want to visit and just people watch. The twists kept me on the edge of my seat and weren't too predictable. I definitely recommend this to any thriller lovers or anyone looking for a quick, fun story!
This was my first book by Michelle Gagnon but it definitely won’t be my last! It started off a little slow for me but it eventually picked up.
When Amber finds herself tied up in the back of a serial killer’s van, she’s real pissed. Then, when a mysterious woman in a ski mask shows up to save her, she’s confused.
Then, things get weird.
Amber is forced to go on the run and ends up in Las Vegas, where she befriends a motley crew that help her unravel the mystery she’s found herself in the middle of … oh, and also, she’s being hunted by ANOTHER serial killer.
This story hooked me from sentence one. It’s funny, witty, and INCREDIBLY readable. I enjoyed every page. If you like fast-paced mysteries with a touch of dark humor, you’ll definitely like this one.
I am a self-admitted book worm, and I have been the majority of my life. Here lately, I gravitate towards suspenseful books. One genre that I have also been gravitating towards is books that make me laugh. Because of this, I was very excited to hear about this book.
Pros: I tend to be hesitant to read books from a new author, because it tends to take me a while to get used to the writing style. This was not the case with this book. I was hooked right from the beginning. You can’t help but love the main character.
Cons: I won’t go into detail, but a twist that I thought was going to happen, ended up “not” happening. I was actually a bit disappointed in that.
I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although this is my first “comedic suspense” book, I still enjoyed it. I definitely recommend this book.
**A received an advanced reader copy for my honest review**
This was a wild ride from the very beginning! This tale goes beyond a traditional cat and mouse game with an array of twists!
Amber finds herself in quite the predicament as she has been abducted by a serial killer and as she awaits her inevitable and unfortunate fate, a stranger wearing a ski mask enters the dwelling she is being held captive and "saves" her (or so she thinks!). This stranger ends up taking down the serial killer (not intentionally) and Amber is forever grateful for this stranger's kindness. This stranger wants to be on her way but Amber wants to know more about this stranger, but this stranger aka Ski Mask, wants nothing more to do with this girl she accidentally rescued as this wasn't her original intent. From this point, the story really begins as Amber does not want to alert the police of her abduction, due to her sketchy past, and realizes it is time to move! She journeys to Las Vegas and receives various post cards left on her car along her road trip. When she arrives in Vegas she meets an array of characters that make this such a dynamic take. Ski Mask aka Grace makes her appearance in Vegas and it is unveiled that the serial killer she is hunting is her brother. A series of twists, turns, scavenger hunts and unexpected friendships made this such a savoring read!
I really enjoyed this author and her writing style, while this is my first book from this author, it will certainly not be my last! Thank you to Net Galley for letting me read this sensational book!!
This book starts out with Amber being abducted by a serial killer. She is rescued by a woman who hunts serial killers. When the woman tries to tell her to call the cops in 5 minutes Amber doesn’t listen and pesters the woman into giving her a ride. Before Amber knows it she has become the target of another serial killer and her rescuer is reluctantly helping her, but can Amber trust her. Amber is savvy, street smart and doesn’t like taking orders. This book will require you to suspend belief, but it will definitely keep you turning the pages. A good book with a great cast of characters by a new author for me. I will definitely read her again. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
Being kidnapped by a serial killer and saved by a mysterious person in all black was just the beginning of Ambers problems.
A laugh out loud thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat and rooting for Amber and her new friends.
Killing Me was a great crime/thriller/mystery. The main character Amber was part Stephanie Plum with a dash of Dexter mixed in. I found myself laughing out loud at times. Loved all the gritty Las Vegas characters as well.
I t kept me guessing until the very end. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the satirical side of serial killers.
Oh Netgalley, how I missed you !!!
Did anyone else have a slight (major) panic attack when netgalley went down for 24 hours?
It’s not that I don’t have 100 unread books in my house buttt I had been wanting to read THIS one!
Killing Me
I had seen this book take bookstagram by the gears and pump into overdrive. I just had to know what everyone was so hyped up about .
Well, this book delivers and once again bookstagram has slayed with providing another fabulous book rec.
This book is jam packed with twists and turns you will not be able to anticipate . There was strong character development and it never once dragged .
I have the attention span of a squirrel so I need that instant attachment or I will put the book down. The likelihood of me picking it back up is slim to none .
I definitely did not put this one down! I could not flip the pages fast enough .
Due out May 16, 2023, you do not want to miss this one
Teaser :
Amber Jamison can’t believe she’s about to become the latest victim of a serial killer. Things get even weirder when she’s miraculously saved by a mysterious woman . . . who promptly disappears. Who was she? And why is she hunting serial killers?
You’d think escaping one psychopath would be enough, but Amber’s problems are just beginning. Her close call has law enforcement circling a past she’s tried to outrun. She’s forced to flee across the country, ending up at a seedy motel in Las Vegas with a noir-obsessed manager and a sex worker as her unlikely companions . . . and danger right behind. She’s landed in the cross hairs of the world’s most prolific killer, caught up in a deadly game that’s been going on for years. To survive, she is forced to dust off her old playbook and partner with someone she can’t trust. The odds are against her, but sometimes you just have to roll the dice.

This was an absolute treat! A breath of fresh air. A comedic thriller? Sign. Me. Up.
The sarcastic undertone drew me in from page one and held me captive all the way to the end. If you enjoyed the Finley Donovan series, definitely pick this one up! You won’t be let down!

Have you ever watched a serial killer documentary?
I will admit that I usually have some Netflix serial killer show on when I wake up each morning. There’s just so many fascinating things that have happened. With that in mind, I read the description of this book and knew it would be a good fit for me.
Amber escaped a serial killer…then things got weird. We meet Amber as she is being abducted, and then just as she is about to be murdered, she is saved by a woman in a ski mask. When the woman disappears, Amber has no clue what has just happened. When she starts getting odd text messages, she flees across the country and ends up in Las Vegas Nevada. Before long, Amber realizes that she is smack dab in the middle of one of the world’s most prolific killers. As she is forced to survive her past comes back to help, and so do her new friends. Will she survive, or will she be the latest victim…again?
I knew I was going to enjoy this book by the time the first chapter was up. It was crazy good in the best possible way. I really loved Amber’s character. Even though she was so flawed, you couldn’t help but root for her. The writing style on this one was unique, I’d never quite had a book done this way, and I really enjoyed it. The pacing started out lightning fast and did slow a little as the book went on. I loved that this book was set it Vegas, it was just the perfect setting for everything that happened. I loved all the aspects that were intertwined with this book – it was just done fantastically. What a fantastic thriller.
If you want a laugh out loud serial killer thriller then check this one out May 16th.
Thank you to the publisher Penguin Group – Putnam, @putnambooks, @penguinrandomhouse, and Netgalley, @netgalley, for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
“Killing Me” is a fun ride, fueled by dark humor, witty banter, and likable characters, with some nice little twists along the way. The opener hooked me immediately, putting the reader right in the middle of the action. I found myself constantly wanting to know what comes next and often laughing out loud at some of the dialogue. I would have liked a little more time with some of the characters and some higher stakes throughout the story to up the drama, but that could have been hard to balance with the more comedic tone. All in all, this was an entertaining read with a satisfying ending, what more can you ask for?
Thank you to Penguin Group Putnam Books and NetGalley for this ARC.
Amber is having the worst day of her life- she’s been abducted by a serial killer into the back of a van. Just when escape seems impossible, help arrives in the most unlikely form. Amber’s rescuer isn’t interested in being a hero, and Amber is now worried about her past being exposed and ending up in jail. To escape the FBI, she heads to Las Vegas. Things get even more strange when she gets there and finds herself in the path of a different serial killer.
I really enjoyed this unique and suspenseful thriller. The main character is hilarious and the book is filled with more laughs and levity than I’d expect from a thriller. I liked the anti hero main characters and found their back stories to be just as interesting as the present that was unfolding. I thought I’d figured out a twist, only to be quickly proven wrong. The end was filled with action packed plot twists.
Thank you to Michelle Gagnon, GP Putnam’s Sons, and Netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
This book came out of nowhere and now I'm completely obsessed with it! If you are a fan of the Finlay Donovan series, you will want to pick this one up when it releases on May 16th.
I absolutely loved all the strong, badass female characters in this book! Dot was my favorite, but all the characters had serious Taylor Swift Bad Blood energy about them. It seemed like the author wrote them so that each one could shine in their own way, even if they weren't the main character.
I will admit, the red herring totally got me, and I may have pulled an Andy Dwyer surprise face when all was revealed at the end. I loved the ending and really, I just loved everything about this one!
Seriously, do yourself a favor and read this book! I give it a solid 5/5 stars!
