Thank you NetGalley and Putman books for giving me this book to read. Amber is the newest victim of the "Pikachu Killer" serial killer. She couldn't believe that this is happening to her, she is always aware of her surroundings. She gets rescued and flees to Las Vegas where it's about to happen all over again. This book will make you laugh and keep you guessing.
Amber just escaped a serial killer, or did she?
LGBTQ+ humorous thriller? YES, PLEASE.
Witty, fast paced, original and truly entertaining.
A total fresh air when it comes to thrillers.
You can really connect with the main character.
I absolutely loved this book and it has easily become one of my favorites.
Cannot recommend enough.
Whip smart, super funny story!
When we meet Amber she has been kidnapped (fairly easily) by a serial killer. She partially so terrified she can't think and partially embarrassed upon belief that she let this happen to herself. Desperate to escape, she doesn't think twice when a masked woman saves her and she goes underground immediately.
When she turns up in Las Vegas, she quickly finds that she has not outrun her problems. A serial killer (maybe the same? Maybe a new killer?) is clearly nearby and praying on women. Amber relies on her old grifter tricks and ends up befriending a few unlikely allies. When the masked woman appears again, Amber needs to make a choice on whether to trust her or to keep running. If you love unlikely heroines, sharp and funny dialogue and unusual and creative plot lines, Killing Me is for you! #penguin
What a refreshing take on the genre! Serial killer meets comedy in Michelle Gagnon's KILLING ME.
Amber Jamison is a tough woman who cannot believe she's the latest victim of a serial killer--pushed into a white van no less. But a mysterious woman saves her, beginning a series of problems Amber must contend with. I recommend this book--you will laugh and be caught up by this twisty story.
Killing Me is Super fun, super original, with kick ass female characters….you can’t go wrong.a rollicking ride from start to finish.
** Thank you Netgalley for this ARC **
Okay, I've got to admit that this was a great thriller and it was kinda funny as well, some of the parts did made me chuckled while reading this book. I have heard of this author but haven't read any books from her, so I wanted to read one of her books. I was really glad that I finally did and really enjoyed the plot, characters, all of it. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy reading thrillers with humor in it. Again, thank you NetGalley for this ARC.
Horrifyingly hilarious. Two words to sum up a great original read. The characters were easy to relate to in a weird way, lol.
From the first chapter of this book I knew it was going to be a ride and I loved every single second of it! It’s funny, fast paced and makes you think what did I just read — and can I start it over again?
I really enjoyed this book. How many of us think it will be me ? Well for her it was. And so surprising this is fabulous and I dont want to say too much because I might say something to give it away. Thanks net galley!!!
This book is a pretty fun read. You can tell Gagnon had fun writing it. It's one of those fluffy, kooky-character cozy-ish mysteries, with the kooky characters having edge. The plot isn't tricky, but it is fairly believable for a book featuring a con woman, sex worker, serial killer hunter, etc. My only pet peeve was that the protagonist has some of that cool-girl, I can eat everything because I have, like, the best metabolism ever, until shit started getting cray, and then she kept eating like that but also puking every other paragraph (slight hyperbolization). Overall, though, if you're into cozy aesthetic while simultaneously not being easily offended, I recommend.
I throughly enjoyed this novel. In fact, it’s one of the few lately that has held my attention throughout the entire story. While I could see a few things coming, I never felt like rushing though it. I would definitely recommend it to friends.
This book is great! Would definitely recommend. Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Such a FUN story about murder, but also about friendship! I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did! From the very beginning the action starts with attempted murder, then rescue, new friends, escapes, and laughs. Killing Me has some quirky surprises and the last few chapters just jumped off the page. There was never a dull moment, and the ending did not disappoint. The most lasting impression on me was that friendships can be found in some unexpected places.
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read and review Killing Me.
Killing Me by Michelle Gagnon is a superb and engrossing read with a great plot and engaging characters. Well worth the read!
That first chapter! I mean it really jumped right into the cation and the author’s voice is amazing! It has the same type of humor as You Might Be the Killer. I don’t normally describe thrillers as funny, but Amber’s snarky attitude had me laughing from the get go. It really reminded me of Christopher Moore (Bloodsucking Fiends, You Suck, A Dirty Job). I was engaged the whole time and found myself irritated that I had to take breaks for adulting. The cat and mouse games, the twists, all of it! Everything I needed! And it really had an ending you won’t see coming!
Huge thanks to Penguin/G.P. Putnam and Netgalley for sending me this ARC for review! All of my reviews are given honestly!
Honestly… not sure what I just read. If you’re into super weird humor, LGBTQ+ sex workers, multiple serial killers, and small-time grifters, this is the book for you. I’m not sure this was the book for me.
The book started right in the middle of the action, which worked well for getting the plot going, but then the pacing kind of fell apart until the final few chapters. There were some characters with unique features, which I liked, but the whole thing was so bizarre I’m just… still thinking about it. Which is good, I guess?
I think this book is going to have to be a DNF for me. It is not a bad book per se, I am just having difficulty getting into it. I am rating it 3 stars because I have to give it a rating.
Wow. This book was different but in a good way. The MC just couldn't stay out of trouble. Very cool twists and likeable characters. Definitely worth a read.
When college psychology student Amber wakes up on a van floor fully duct-taped like a sushi roll, she feels stupid. Stupid for being tricked and captured by the Pikachu Killer, who already has 5 victims that he paints like Pokémon and then strangles. Evil Eevee, for sure. Amber sees a mostly naked Pikachu-masked man with a pudgy middle and realizes her situation is “terrifying, absurd and hilarious”. Drugged again, she wakes up bald and painted like a Poliwhirl or a Horsea, about to be killed when a ski masked ninja swoops in. Amber is rescued, but unwilling to go to the police because of something in her background. For her, escaping a serial killer is as unlucky as being caught by one. A sign from God (actually a postcard under her windshield wiper) tells her to go to Vegas.
The story gets crazy and thrilling from that point (more serial killers and more wanna-be ninja sleuths). Amber is likeable and really wanted a fresh start, but this matter of being kidnapped (and not wanting the scrutiny a victim gets) has put her on the run. The main character is quick-witted and easy to empathize with — Ms. Gagnon has a talent for getting you to root for Amber even with her flaws. There’s a lot of quirky humor as well to offset the gorier aspects — hey, we started with the “Pikachu Killer” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I loved this book! So much so, I’ll be looking for the author’s backlist (a three part series) and adding it to my TBR list. 5 stars!
Thank you to Penguin/G.P. Putnam and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review!
Literary Pet Peeve Checklist:
Green Eyes (only 2% of the real world, yet it seems like 90% of all fictional females): NO But there is a guy with a dark, dark green aura. And if the Pikachu Killer gets through the entire Pokédex, then Elgyem and Spiritomb have green eyes.
Horticultural Faux Pas (plants out of season or growing zones, like daffodils in autumn or bougainvillea in Alaska): SORT OF Serial killer’s dad tried to “cultivate” tulip bulbs and apparently failed. Whatever that means. Just plant them.
I was able to read this book early through NetGalley and I am totally here for this book. It's a thriller, it's a comedy, it's everything. I was laughing from the beginning and I could not put it down. It looks like this might be the start of a series, and I am looking forward to the rest of them- I mean how can you go wrong with a killer called the Pikachu killer that paints his victims like Pokemon?!
