I was really intrigued by the description and was excited to start this book, but found it wasn't exactly my cup of tea once I got into it.
I enjoyed this book a lot! It put a different pace to the normal thriller I read with a side of humor that made it more entertaining to read. Worth a read!
This is a quirky, dark humored book. It starts off in the middle of a serial killer kidnapping, then makes a humorous twist! However, there are lulls in the action though out the story. The story follows Amber, kidnapped by a serial killer, then rescued by a woman in a ski mask. And, it twists again! There is yet another serial killer in the chase. Don't be fooled, this is a light read. Thank you, Netgalley, for the opportunity to review this ARC in exchange for an honest review. 3.5 Stars
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for an early copy of this one!
Overall Killing Me was a quick, fun and completely entertaining read. I really enjoyed the entire concept of surviving one serial killer to end up on another's radar. The cast of characters were completely entertaining and I ended up reading the book in a day. It kept me interested but not necessarily surprised at how the mystery unfolded. But full disclosure, I am a reader who tends to guess the twist before it happens so this could totally be me.
Overall, I am glad I picked this up and will definitely read more from Michell Gagnon!
3.5ish?
Eh it was good but it wasn't great it felt like it was a store brand Finlay Donovan. I still enjoyed reading it but it just didn't flow quite as easy, make me smile quite as much, keep me quite as interested. However if I had never read Finlay Donovan I might have loved this one.
If you like some humor along with your mystery, you’ll love Killing Me. There are several strong female characters, including the main character, Amber, who tells the story. The whole thing reminded a bit of the Finlay Donovan and Stephanie Plum books - which is not a bad thing at all!
The book opens with a rather scary situation. Amber has been grabbed by a serial killer and she figures her short life is going to be over very soon. Of course, if that had happened, there wouldn’t be a whole book to read, so it’s not really a spoiler to say that she survives. When later an FBI agent shows up at her door, she figures her shady past has caught up with her and she runs - from her college in Tennessee to Las Vegas, where she hopes to buy a new identity.
In addition to Amber herself, we meet some great quirky female characters along the way, especially the women she meets in Las Vegas and a mysterious woman named Grace. We also get a realistic-seeming sapphic relationship.
Thank you to NetGalley and G P Putnam’s Sons for the opportunity to read an advance readers copy of this book, although I was late to it. I bounced between the ARC and the published audiobook, courtesy of my public library. The narrator, Jaime Lamchick, did a good job with the various voices and accents. All opinions are my own.
Killing Me starts out with a thrilling mystery with a heavy dose of humor, but unfortunately the humor doesn’t last too long. It’s a good story, I just really liked the humor at the beginning & I wish there was more..

An entertaining plot with a few quirky characters. I loved Amber and her backstory.
Many thanks to PENGUIN GROUP Putnam and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is a gripping con artist thriller that kept me turning the page with the twists and drama. The characters were well fleshed out and fun to follow. I did not see some of the twists coming and I love when a book can surprise me - well done!
Pretty enjoyable overall. It was wild and very out there but I had a good time reading it.
The plot is unique for sure. I've never read anything like it and that is commendable. I'm not sure I liked all of the characters, but they were interesting nonetheless. I was never bored.
It's sort of a thriller but also sort of not? It doesn't read like a thriller to me but it still has mystery aspects and trying to figure out what's happening.
Really this book doesn't fit into any box and I think that's a good thing. It's got its own thing going and I like to find that. Overall just a good time.
I’m a sucker for a con artist story and this book did not disappoint! The plot kept me guessing and the mystery was brilliantly crafted. However what I loved most about this book was the cast of characters. I especially appreciated the humanity the author brought to sex workers, a population that is often looked down upon.
TL;DR: I was very much charmed by this debut from Gagnon, about the escaped victim of a serial killer who manages to catch the attention of another notorious (and even more dangerous) killer. The book is darkly humorous with a great cast of characters, a messy MC you can’t help but root for, and a final act showdown that I thought was really well-executed. Longer synopsis below, KILLING ME officially hits bookshelves tomorrow and definitely worth adding to your summer beach read list!
Killing me is not what I expected in fact there are laughable moments that had me wondering what type of book I am reading. The created a fast-paced dialogue that keep readers on their toes long with list of characters that start out creepy and end up being the friends the woman needed.
The story has everything you are looking for in a suspenseful mystery and a female lead that doesn't give up on life!
Thank you Netgalley
Totally give this a read if you're into a bit of a lighter crime fiction vibe. I absolutely loved the cast of characters and setting in this one.
This was a very original thriller. I loved the plot with the Pokémon Killer. It took me awhile to read it, bur it was funny and entertaining, along with being a good thriller. I recommend it.
KILLING ME is a fun, outlandish, and darkly humorous thriller. Gagnon creates a fabulously entertaining mystery with all the twists, turns, and nefarious serial killer moments any crime reader will love.
Between the murders, the cons, the characters, how all the pieces in the puzzle come together, and the setting of Vegas, this screams a crazy wild ride. Wait until you get to the wig shop scene. It is nuts, but also so perfect for this story. What I loved was that for every wacky element, there is something grounded to bring the reader back to reality. Even the characters are examples of this. They could have come across as caricatures, instead adding diversity, flavor, wit, and emotion.
KILLING ME is not your average serial killer thriller. It takes the serious nature of the situation and infuses it with lighter and, at times, comical moments. There is a quirkiness to the suspense that makes this book so enjoyable.
I personally cannot wait to see what Gagnon gives her readers next.
This one had me laughing out loud, so so so so good! I want to be friends with the MC. I recommend this read but you can’t borrow my copy haha. I’m keeping it on my shelves.
I loved this book so much! It's easily one of my favorite books of the year. Gagnon has a fun, fast-moving writing style that makes her characters feel unique and realistic. There were many twists and turns, and I was guessing as each new one presented. I can't wait to read more from this author and wish I could read this book again for the first time.
This book is a fun, fast-paced thriller that is surprisingly humorous all at the same time. I was drawn in immediately and was heavily invested in the story and ragtag team of characters to figure out how this ended.
This story wastes no time in getting into the action as our main character, Amber, is kidnapped by a serial killer – the notorious…wait for it…Pikachu Killer! If becoming the only one to escape the Pikachu Killer is not enough, however, Amber soon becomes the target of another serial killer in a sick game of cat and mouse.
The characters are well-done, multi-dimensional, and easy to root for even with their flaws. This book was smart and the psychological elements were woven in very well. The setting of Las Vegas was also a nice surprise since it doesn’t take place in the high end casino or hotel environment that one usually pictures when thinking of Vegas. Instead, there are grungy motels and our characters are riding around in beaten down clunker cars. If you are looking for a fresh take on the thriller genre that will keep you hooked, then this book is definitely worth picking up! Thank you to PENGUIN GROUP Putnam and NetGalley for an ARC of this book in which I am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group/Putnam for the opportunity to read and review this book!!
Amber Jamison - street-smart, people-smart, college-educated, con-artist Amber Jamison - is about to be murdered by a serial killer. Until she's miraculously saved by a Ski-Masked stranger, who then just disappears. The fun doesn't end there. Someone with Amber's past naturally doesn't cozy up to the cops, so when they start sniffing around, she flees across the US to Las Vegas where she comes across yet another serial killer. This guy is different, though... he's much more prolific and has been killing as part of a sick game for years. Amber will have to team up (something she doesn't like doing... period) with people that she can trust (or maybe she can't?) to stop a serial killer with hundreds of confirmed kills. Viva Las Vegas.
THIS BOOK. WAS AWESOME. Gagnon somehow managed to make a book about a deadly psychopath serial killer hunting a con artist in Las Vegas hilarious and thoroughly enjoyable. Yes, you read that right.
Amber was an amazing MC. I loved the depth of her character and I loved her transformation as the book went on. I loved her relationships with the other MCs in the novel, especially Dot and Marcella. Her banter and narration were a hoot to read and Gagnon did an impeccable job creating a unique voice for her throughout the story. The supporting characters were also extremely loveable (see aforementioned Dot and Marcella). The main conflict in this story was fascinating (no spoilers, just read it) and the twistiness at the end ALMOST got me (ALMOST). This book is fantastic. Read it if you enjoy awesome narrators and voice in writing, serial killer podcasts, loveable characters, and twisty cat-and-mouse storylines.
