This is the first novel I have read by Sandra Brown. I did not hate it, but I did not love it either. I felt like it read more like a romance novel than a mystery or crime novel. I'm not big on romance novels and if I do read them, then I prefer for them to be rom coms. With all that said, I just don't think that Sandra Brown is the author for me. I'm sure that other readers will love this book. It has a great premise, with a villain and unlikely romance mixed in. The narrator was good and I liked that it is a male narrator since the story is told from a male main character perspective.
Brown is one of the few romantic suspense writers who almost always uses a make her central narrator, but it works, probably because Brown is such a gifted writer. In her latest, a man learns that he has been left the medical power of attorney for his ex-wife, who is on life support after a violent attack. Zach Bridger is already in the public eye because of his career as an MVP quarterback – the story about his ex wife and his control over her fate becomes a news sensation. He feels his only choice is to step back and let his former in-laws make the choice about their daughter. Four years later, she’s still on life support, and her attacker, wealthy and influential Eban, is released from prison after serving only four years. And Zach must face the fact that for Eban to be charged with murder, his ex, Rebecca will have to die, and Zack will have to be the one who “kills” her. A complex and deliciously dark mystery
I took a chance on a book outside my comfort zone, and I don't regret it. Overkill by Sandra Brown was a novel of suspense, taut and emotional. Zach Bridger, a former NFL star, finds himself responsible for his ex-wife's medical care when she is left in a persistent vegetative state after a drug-fueled party gone horribly wrong. Honoring the wishes of her parents, he lobbies for all possible life-sustaining measures. Four years later, her attacker, convicted on assault charges, is free, and Rebecca's state remains unchanged. Now a recluse, Zach lives in the woods, his professional athletic career utterly destroyed. Kate Lennon, a fierce state prosecutor, approaches Zach with a plan to put Rebecca's attacker back in prison--but in order to do that, Zach has to revisit the decisions he made about Rebecca's fate.
Eban Clarke, the villian, is a true sociopath, living his indulgent life without remorse. He's the worst kind of human, and Brown makes sure that he gets what coming to him, but she pumps the story full of suspense first. Brown also handles the emotionally fraught moral implications surrounding life-sustaining measures with tenderness and care. Those decisions are not easy ones to make, and the reader gets to watch Zach truly wrestle with what is best not just for those who care for Rebecca but for Rebecca herself.
The narrator, Kyf Brewer, does a fabulous job bringing the book to life. It was the perfect soundtrack to my walks with my dog on the nearby hiking trails.
This was my first Sandra Brown and I absolutely loved it! It was compelling, and kept me glued to my seat!
40% in and I am DNFing. Despite a promising premise, this book just wasn't moving fast enough to hold my attention. The premise was clearly communicated but then it seemed like the book was in a holding pattern... we get that Zach is attracted Kate, and they should not cross that line. We get that Eban is an entitled ass who got off lucky, and his fate lies in the decision of whether to take Rebecca off life support...but after 40% of the book, I wanted to know what happens next?
This was also my first Sandra Brown book, and I found the writing to be overly verbose and wordy...
Interesting plot, but a lot of painfully awkward writing.

Hachette audio thank you for this alc. I was really surprised getting it. I went blind to be honest. And I was positive suttisfied. It was not an ordinary thriller but it waa easy to read and perfect for lazy afternoons or Sundays. It was also perfect for my driving to work and back home. A woman is not ok and her ex husband is in charge to decide if keep her alive or not. The person responsble for her status is out of jail after just four years. He wantsvto discover what really happened to his wife. He has someone special beside and that tension- attractions worked out great for me.
