This book deals with some dark topics. This book is based on real life events. There was some repetition in the story. There was lots of tense moments. It was difficult to read at times
This was a dark and intense read, and certainly not one for the fainthearted. Thankfully I usually enjoy a dark read and this was no different. Although the book is fictional, you could tell that the author had drawn on his own professional experiences to create a story that felt horrifying and hauntingly believable. There is a depth to the doctor's character that makes the story even more alarming and this is created through the writer's effective use of multiple perspectives. I look forward to reading more by this author.
As a parent, reading about child abuse is scary because it's one of the worst fears we have about our kids.
But that story, fictional but based on real events, was really compelling. Very good book. Recommended
Anthony Mailer is a troubled child, his parents have split up and his dad has a new partner, he is only seven. Anthony is referred to a child psychologist Dr David Galbraithe who wins over his trust at their first meeting with sweets.
Dr Galbraithe is a well respected psychologist but he is also a sick monster, using his position to abuse and torture children.
This had me gripped, I was not sure at first if I would like this because of the subject matte. But I am so pleased I read this.
The author took us on a dark, chilling and disturbing journey that will stay with me long after finishing this book.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
The start of the book may be triggering for some people, as it focuses on a paedophile ring. I would definitely persevere, as its a fantastic read. Triggering issues are handled sensitively. It's written from Dr Galbraiths point of view and is chilling. A fantastic debut novel!
5☆ Gets Under You Skin!
White is the Coldest Colour is not a book for feint hearted. It contains child sex abuse, paedophiles, but it's extremely gripping and once again John Nicholl has created a book based on reality by drawing from his experiences in the child protection team.
This was a book that got under my skin and wouldn't let go.
It is one of these books you know you shouldn't enjot because of the nature of the book but you couldn't help keep turning those pages and screaming at the detectives 'NOOOO don't look there' , 'Don't tell that person'
I can't go into detail about the story as it will give much away. You only have to read the blurb to understand what is going on.
But what I will say is....
I don't normally swear when writing reviews but I really feel that it's warranted!!
Dr David Galbraith is a sadistic bastard, who is a machauvenist, paedophile who preys on young boys and despises women and manipulates them for his own entertainment and studies!
He uses his power for evil.
You will hate him!! You are meant to!
I was not sure about this book when I first started reading it as it was out of my comfort zone but once I had started I had to read it all. The book centres on Dr David Galbraith, an eminent child psychologist, but who is also a sadistic, murdering paedophile whose prey is seven to eight year old boys. Anthony, who is seven years old, is the youngest boy in the Mailer family. As his parents have recently split up Anthony is finding it hard to accept and is having behaviour issues and so is referred to Dr Galbraith. Dr Galbraith becomes obsessed with Anthony and starts to plot how he can keep him captive in his basement. We realise that Galbraith is part of a paedophile ring being investigated by the police. The story follows the Mailer family through this difficult time and how the police finally realise that Anthony’s life is in danger. This book was quite a difficult read at times but was obviously researched very well and written very sensitively. Will now have to read the follow up book.
Thanks to Netgalley and Boldwoods Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
This is a very disturbing read as the blurb warns and it is not for the faint hearted but it does send a very important message, which is that even people in high professions can be evil. I really enjoyed this one but don't like how all I's have to be dotted and the t's crossed before anything can get done. I understand this is just the way it works but it frustrates the hell out of me. A gripping read and now I am looking forward to starting the next book in this series. Thank you netgalley and boldwood books for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
My rating ⭐⭐⭐3/5
Be careful who you trust.
The Mailer family are oblivious to the terrible danger that enters their lives when seven-year-old Anthony is referred to the child guidance service by the family GP following the breakdown of his parents' marriage.
Fifty-eight year old Dr. David Galbraith, a sadistic, predatory paedophile employed as a consultant child psychiatrist, has already murdered one child in the soundproofed cellar below the South Wales Georgian townhouse he shares with his wife and two young daughters.
Anthony becomes Galbraith's latest obsession and he will stop at nothing to make his grotesque fantasies reality.

To the outside world Dr Galbraith is a respected child psychologist and former college lecturer, husband and father. He is also a member of a paedophile ring and has killed a child. He gets a new patient who he fixates on but his mother decides not to carry on with his treatment and stops her child from seeing him so he has to find another way to see the child.
The story is told from the doctors view and also the police who are closing in on the ring and Dr Galbraith but will they catch him?
Yes this book is quite dark but it does not go into too much detail about the abuse.
Without giving too much away, this book is amazingly written, but disturbing In terms of it’s content. Dr David Galbraith is a predatory paedophile and this book in part gives a first-person perspective into his warped mind. Nicholl does an amazing job of crafting Galbraith as the most unlikeable, arrogant monster that you hate the minute he is described, The way Nicholl ensures Galbraith manipulates all the other characters around him makes him even more detestable. The treatment doled out to the female characters is especially cruel and callous. A great (if not harrowing at times) read.
A pretty darn good crime thriller. Well written and clever. I loved to hate David and found myself gripping my Kindle with white knuckles at his dastardly deeds.
This is a book not for the faint hearted. However much of an uncomfortable read this story is it most definitely is a narrative that needs to be told. Paedophiiles are not the stereotypical illusion of “dirty old men in raincoats” but come from all walks of life and professions. This books centres on Dr David Galbraith, a consultant child psychiatrist, with unlimited access to a wealthy of vulnerable children and their families a position he abuses for his predatory wants.
At times I was screaming for the professionals involved to scratch abit deeper into this man’s behaviour and was frustrated at the red tape that needs to be gone through in order to do it. The ending had me punching the air and I’m ready to start on the second instalment in this series.
This is a very good read from this author and whilst it can be uncomfortable at times there is no deeply graphic details of child abuse.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for this advanced copy which was a great read, I had trouble putting this down! I liked the way it was written and it made for an easy read. I would definitely recommend and look forward to reading another book by this author! A stunner! I guarantee you’ll put everything on hold until you arrive at the shocking final scenes! With a deftly drawn cast of characters, an intriguing plot and an immersive and compelling narrative, this is a one sit compulsive read.
I wanted to like this book more, but none of the characters is particularly sympathetic or likeable, and the reader spends most of the book inside the head of Dr. David Galbraith, not a good place to be when he is an evil, manipulative, arrogant, sociopathic pedophile. The police response to finding a missing child didn't ring true for me: they didn't inform the father for hours, and held off (sometimes for days) on pursuing leads and questioning suspects for reasons I didn't buy. I did like the irony of the ending, even though it was kind of contrived.
I was lucky enough to hear this when it was previously released on audible. I listened to it 5 years ago and read it this last week. It was still as hard going and tough to read now as it was to listen to it then.
Well, i read (listened) to this one as i really enjoyed the last one by this author. I'll start off by saying, yet another brilliant audible! The storyline to this one was a lot heavier and hard going. Harrowing as it was about a paedophile ring. And one that was so insidious it penetrated to the highest ranks of authority. The storyline was well thought out and detailed and put the listener straight into the thick of it. Gut wrenching and heart breaking, i wonder sometimes how i managed to stay standing, i didn't realise i was holding my breath whilst listening until i heard the blood pumping in my ears. Instincts kicking in and making it worse. A lot of me closing my eyes tight and shaking my head, willing the characters to do what i wanted. The characters themselves were well thought out and their individuality shone through.
Definitely a 5 star read/listen.
Anthony Mailer has been referred to a child psychologist Dr. David Galbraith after his parents marriage has broken down and has left a negative impact on him. His mother Molly is convinced therapy will help her son and is pleased that after the first session things are looking better for Anthony.
However Anthony attends his second appointment. He goes in happy and smiling Dr Galbraith insists there is no need for Molly to wait around and to come back when her sons appointment is over. Reluctantly Molly goes however her gut instinct pulls her back early and when she gets there she cannot believe the state her son is in.
After a warning that Dr Galbraith isn’t all he seems Molly decides to cancel all further appointments with Dr Galbraith as something just isn’t sitting right and for her it’s not worth seeing her son in that state again.
With Dr Galbraith determined to get his hands on Anthony he beaks into Mollys family home, leaves her for dead and takes Anthony. It very quickly becomes clear that Dr Galbraith isn’t the kind concerning doctor he claims to be nor is he the nice family man who adores his wife and kids. He is an evil child paedophile who will go to extreme lengths to get what he wants and has committed some hideous crimes.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy of this eye opening thriller as although it’s not a true story it is based on some true events that the author has dealt with whilst in the police force and which many readers may find upsetting.
The Doctor
The start of a dark, gripping crime thriller series from bestseller John Nicholl
by John Nicholl
I actually did like the book. NOT love it, but that's the point. It has an ugly message and warning against trusting anyone with authority... you were programmed to. I see as the writer did try to tell, QUESTION everyone who has contact with your child. BE VERY CAREfUL who you trust.

A note from the author: While fictional, this book was inspired by true events. It draws on the author’s experiences as a police officer and child protection social worker. The story contains content that some readers may find upsetting. It is dedicated to survivors everywhere.
I do love the message the book finally makes clear to everyone. No time to look away from ugly things.
This is a 3 books series. You want to see the justice if you will, and The doctor's wife, even as she did what she had to pay dearly, as well as hundreds of young boys. Lastly is Anthony and his story . It was all so very dreadful for so many, it tightens your heart for the survivors.
One series of books I shall not forget.
I am going to do something I hate doing: giving a bad review to a book. Why do I do it, I hear you ask? Because I want to be honest and in this case it means sharing my frustration. Of course it’s not possible to love every book, but I usually find the positive things overshadow the negative ones. Here, I am sorry to say, I could not find anything positive to say.
I know I am the minority, but hey people experience things differently and this is my experience. It’s obvious the author captivated a lot of readers. I, sadly, was not convinced.
Ok, what was it that disturbed me then?
First of all the language: Too repetitive, too grinding on my nerves. Then there were the characters. There was not one single person I liked. Molly, for instance, does not like her ex to call her ‘love’ anymore, but when he does not do it she asks why he does not do it anymore all of a sudden. Please, lady, make up your mind.
Our main character, Dr Galbraith is the baddie. It’s normal he is despicable, but often I feel sympathy for baddies in books. Here this is so not the case. The things he does though are, for me, too over the top. I just cannot understand why he makes those decisions.
Overall, I found this story a bit old fashioned even though it was first published in 2015 and more than once I thought ‘really?’.
There are two more books in this series. I am going to pass. A book should be written in order to invite the readers to read the next one(s) too. Nothing in this one does this for me.
Please, don’t let me influence you. After all it’s the opinion of just one person. Please, make up your own mind. You might love it, or you might hate it. That’s for you to decide. 1 star. Sorry.
Thank you

This is an amzing twisted thriller.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.
I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.
Thanx to negalley and boldwood books for letting me review this book. Not for the faint hearted.. i enjoyed this book although the subject matter is of a sensitive nature, the author has done thorough research and uses his experience and knowledge of a police officer and child protection social worker..How do you know who you can trust?
Anthony is referred to a physcologist after his parents split up. Dr david galbraith is an evil, sadistic paedophile who has a soundproofed cellar below his home he shares with his wife and daughter. Unbeknown to anthony and his family he is galbraiths next intended target
