Candidly, this book was a cute paranormal that was just ok. It's quirky, funny and a bit romantic. I'd prefer a bit more romance than the paranormal plot.
Thank you Entangled Publishing, LLC for the complimentary copy of this paperback.
I DNFed this book. I had difficultly connecting with the characters and was very frustrated at the heroine for her attitude around the paranormal world.
I was so excited to read this book during fall. Angels, demons and the changing weather had me counting down the days until this book landed on my kindle. But within those first few pages, I felt like I failed. I couldn't connect to any of the characters. Rhys and Missy seemed to have so much personality, yet I couldn't click or feel anything towards either of them. The same went for their friends too. And the story-line just didn't work for me either. I tried picking this book up throughout the week and still, I couldn't feel anything. I stopped at 22% and I hope whenever I try this book again down the word, it'll work for me. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be right now. So I hope if you pick this one up, that you end up enjoying it so much more than I did!
Thank you NetGalley and Entangled Publishing, LLC for allowing me to read this book! This is a very cute paranormal grumpy/sunshine book! I do like the idea that the author was going for with the supernatural aspects. At first I kind of wished the way Rhys and Maisy met happened a bit more dramatically but it made sense once I read about their second meeting. I didn’t like the insta lust at first but as you get into the story you really connect with the way they fall for each other. I find all of the characters extremely likable in their own way! I wish there was more angst leading up the first kiss between them but the chemistry that continues to progress is great! I loved all the paranormal creatures! I really liked the plot twists that kept happening. I really liked experiencing the way Rhys felt what it felt like to fall in love for the first time and how much his feelings confused him! This book was so fun and I hope to read more about these characters in her future books! I loved picturing all the creatures that attacked them and the interesting places they visited! I loved this book and highly recommend!
me reason, so they must deal with a lot of unexpected problems. Rhys is a great bodyguard--tall, dark, and handsome, with sexy wings. His grumpiness just shows that he is focused on his mission and is devoted to keeping Maisy safe. The fact that they eventually find themselves attracted to each other just makes things more complicated (and fun). It was very satisfying to see them both grow, bringing out the best in each other
Title - 4 stars - This refers to the fact, I suppose, that Rhys and his team are only half angels, which makes them considered imperfect by others in their paranormal world. Maisy, also, thinks she is the wrong person for the job she's been asked to do because she doesn't have any special abilities or insight.
Cover - 4 stars - Beautiful bright color that draws the eye, with a couple of changes in the font to subtly lean towards the subject of the book.
Overall - 4 stars - Although there were some frustrating moments, I very much liked the characters and their interactions. The plot is just silly enough to be entertaining, and the underlying message was warm and positive. Witty banter among the three Nephilim as well as between Rhys and Maisy provided some amusing moments. All in all, a winner for Barth.
Maisy Norgate is busy trying to just make it by in life when she receives a message that an uncle she'd never even known existed left her a mysterious key in his will. It seems useless, so Maisy gets rid of it - not expecting to suddenly find a man claiming to be half-angel at her doorstep, determined to get it back before all hell breaks loose.
This was my first Christi Barth novel and it was so enjoyable! Her tone and writing style is fun and I think fits paranormal romance well. Paranormal romance is one of my favorite genres, it's like candy to me and I always want just one more bite. Imperfect Angel was a lighthearted, toe in the water to the genre. I enjoyed how Barth chose to switch back and forth focus a little to introduce both Maisy and Rhys on their own before throwing them together for all the mayhem to happen.
While I do love my lighthearted, candy-esque reads, I didn't much care for the characters in this book. I think it was just me not being able to relate to Maisy and her naivety. Rhys was an interesting character, but definitely not what I was expecting and just not my type, which made me hard to feel swoony over him as the love interest. I found the plot a little lacking towards the end and very similar to a lot of other paranormal romances I've read - but not adding anything new or exciting.
Overall, I don't feel like I'll pick up the rest of this series, but I did like Barth's writing enough that I'm curious to check out some of her non-paranormal books!
Thank you to NetGalley, Amara, and Entangled Publishing for providing me with a copy for an honest review.
I found this story confusing. From the beginning, I could not follow the links between the characters or the story line.
I wasn't at all sure about this book for the first few pages, but I ended up loving it to bits.
I kind of look at paranormal as the Brussels sprouts of Romance books. I know lots and lots of people love them, but I don't. I've tried and tried to find a way to stomach the sprouts and no matter who fixes them... it's a big, fat no for me. Paranormal as a whole makes me feel the same way, but I have actually ventured into reading a few that I've loved. It pays to keep an open mind, so when I saw that Christi Barth wrote one, I jumped at the chance to give it a go. That doesn't mean it's going to become a favorite genre for me, but she did an amazing job with this story, and I was thoroughly entertained. Very few authors can pull it off, I'm afraid.
What I loved was her rather philosophical approach to dealing with good and evil. That's not the best word for her writing style, however, because it's all written with a lot of heart and never feels dry in the least. The evolution of the relationship between the MCs was fun to watch, and the crazy things that got tossed at them through their journey took wonderful imagination to pull off. So, all in all, five happy stars for this one!
Thank you for the ARC.
Imperfect may be in the title, but the story is anything but!
We definitely have the sunshine-and-grump trope going on, but with a paranormal twist. I love the backstory that's developed without getting too heavy handed. I love the unexpected, well ALL of the unexpected that waits Maisy in her journey to possibly, maybe, eventually, probably becoming the next Keeper. (Hey, I can't spoil the ending!) I love her style (polka dot pants...rainbow converse...we'd be besties and sharing closets!), her attitude (nothing is too insurmountable to attack with a smile and a happy heart), her innocence (not her fault, totally her Uncle's...even if I do forgive him eventually), and her GINORMOUS heart...that even extends it's loving gaze to her new half-man half-angel friends (well one is more than, in more than one way!). Even in the face of great evil (Volac...Lillith...shall I continue?), she stays true to herself, and if you think about it, perhaps that was her greatest strength all along!
I want to say SO MUCH MORE, but without rambling, I'm not sure how. We get a chance to see the mysteries of containment between Heaven and H*ll with all the snark you can muster, all the danger you can throw, and a whole lot of sparks! Let's just say the Nephilim aren't the only ones flying high! Speaking of these guys, all are memorable, but Rhys will definitely hold a special place in your heart...and on your Book Boyfriend list. *wink wink* There's much to smile at, chuckle with, and many situations you'll feel the need to read aloud to the person sitting next to you. Trust me, you will. It's a great read for Paranormal Romance fans that are diehard fans, as well as those that just like to dip a figurative toe into those misty waters now and again.
Maisy is cheerful, even when life throws her a whole lot of curve balls, and she’s going to need all of that positivity with what’s coming at her now. Rhys is the opposite of Maisy. His life as a warrior means that he needs to always be serious, ready for anything, and seeing some of the worst things on earth (and hell) has led him to be a bit … dour. Crossing paths guarantees that sparks are going to fly.
There’s a bit of insta-love but I felt like it worked in this situation. You get a lot of this kind of thing in paranormal romances – something about magic being involved usually means that there’s an unexplainable connection. Some might find it problematic but it’s pretty standard. And I think that the two work together well – they rub each other the wrong way. And all sorts of right ways 🙂
I found Barth’s newest to be fun, humorous, & entertaining and I really hope there are more books coming. She’s created an interesting new world, full of all sorts of known and unknown creatures, with a good amount of danger and excitement mixed with more lighthearted moments. Plus, Rhys’s friends definitely need to find women who will give them a run for their money.
This was such a fun book to read. I couldn't put it down. Who says paranormal won't sell. It's also my first paranormal rom-con. This is about Nephilim, Rhys Boyce, half-angel and half-man. He realizes there is a power shift and there's about to be a new Keeper Of The Key, to the gate of the worst of Hell's prisons. It's their job to train this keeper and keep them safe until the transformation is over in two weeks. When he finally tracks down Maisy Norgate who has no idea the power of the key. She had no idea about an Uncle or why she inherited a key. The next two weeks are an amazing adventure that transforms both of them. I loved it and hope there are more stories to follow. This was just plain a fun romp and I'm glad I read it.
Maisy Norgate thought she was alone in the world when her parents died in a car crash and she was miraculously spared. She now has an old fashioned key in her hand from an Uncle Harold she didn't know existed. She's working two jobs after being laid off her teaching job, trying to keep a roof over her head with her best friend Liss. She doesn't have time for a mystery and gives the key away. When Rhys barges into her life she's astounded at the tale he tells. Angels, Demons, Heaven and Hell are all real and she has a big role to play in it. She has her very own personal trainer-guardian team to help her grow into her power. But first she has to get the key back or Hells gates will open and the world will be flooded with demons wrecking havoc. Rhys has two other Nephilim, Gideon Durand and Zavier Carranza, as part of his team to help.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
In Imperfect Angel from Christi Barth, Maisy gets a mysterious inheritance that upends her world and what she knows of it. At first, she's not sure what's going on. Then she meets Rhys, a Nephilim, half angel, half human who clues her in on what she's been tapped for and it's a doozy! Think gates of the underworld and all that! It takes Rhys a while to convince her that it's all real and he can help her, all the while he's falling for her.
There's plenty of cute banter all along the way here which brought some lightness to what could have been a very dark paranormal tale. But Maisy is fun and Rhys needs to have some, so they are very compatible in that respect.
Rhys's job to protect Maisy comes with challenges from the start -- she gives the inheritance away and that's not good! But these two complement each other so well. Rhys is grumpy and Maisy approaches life very differently. She's full of sunshine and optimism, all the things that Rhys has in short supply. They really do need each other.
I liked Rhys's brothers-in-arms, Zavier and Gideon too, as well as Lissa, Maisy's friend. This is a fun story that is just perfect for the Halloween season.
The world building is good here, although the reader does get a lot of the world details right up front and there's a copious amount of nasty paranormals out there in this story. But that's part of the fun!
I enjoyed this story and I'm hoping there will be more in this world from Christi Barth, now that she's created it. Imperfect Angel is a paranormal romance with a nice splash of humor and comedy to keep it from getting too heavy.
Paranormal anything is not my usual genre so I’m not sure what made me pick up this book. Whatever it was, I am so glad I gave Imperfect Angel a chance because I absolutely loved it!
Maisy and Rhys, along with the other side characters, were so likable and relatable. I genuinely cared about them and finding out where their story lead.
The story is told in dual POV so we get both Maisy’s and Rhys’ thoughts and feelings which made me happy. Plus I’ve got a serious sweet tooth for sarcasm and witty banter which were both done to perfection.
The writing style was amazing, so quirky and witty. I caught myself chuckling quite a few times throughout the book.
This unique, paranormal, grumpy/sunshine romance was the perfect combo of sweet, sassy, and spicy and I loved every page of it. I will definitely be keeping my eye out for more from Christi Barth.
This was a very enjoyable book. I thought that Maisy and Rhys were delightful, and their story was really cute and fun. This is a wonderfully lighthearted read that is perfect if you are a lover of ROM Coms, paranormal romance and lots of wit and humor. I'm quite excited to see what comes next for this new series.
It was a funny paranormal romance, i really enjoyed it. Recommended for those who want something light but romantic.
I really liked this! I loved the concept of the angels (half-angels? obsessed) and the supernatural elements. I looove supernatural romance and this hit every box for me.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Entangled Publishing for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Enjoyable, but don’t know if I would read the rest of the series.
This one wasn’t for me. I thought the premise was really interesting, but couldn’t connect to the characters at all. Their relationship didn’t really have any buildup or development and I felt that the chemistry was lacking. I did really enjoy the writing and how witty the banter was, and I think its a really entertaining read for those who can connect to these characters better than I could. *I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Maisy has been left a key by an uncle that she never knew existed. When a male claiming to be an angel turns up at her door she's stunned. Finding out she's now in charge of the actual Hell - as Keeper of the Key to Hell, and that said angel is essentially her bodyguard, Maisy’s life goes into a tailspin!
Rhys and Maisy then have another battle on their hands. Maisy gave away said key to hell and now they have to track it down before it leads to all kinds of mayhem!
Maisy and Rhys are a great combination. She is sunny, funny and friendly and slightly out of her depth and Rhys is the grumpy, capable, badas$ angel who'd rather be anywhere else than Earth!
Banter, witty repartee - whatever you want to call it is funny and planted well. There may be danger afoot but Maisy is determined to always see the silver lining. And the chemistry between them is hot.
Some of the best-supporting characters are Rhys friends; Zavier, and Gideon. There was a Bromance and a half! The insults! The ribbing! The do-anything-for-each-other hidden under that layer of gruff!
I thought this book was very inventive and different,
I liked how Christi wrote the characters. The cheekiness of them and the chemistry.
I personally would've liked a little less adventure in it, but I will say it made the plot interesting and original.
