All the Sunshine Vicram books have mystery, humor, a little romance, which to me makes the book fun and easy to read. All the characters we've come to know and love are back in this installment.
What kind of shenanigans will the people of Del Sol get up to in the third book? You'll have to read it to find out! I've enjoyed reading each of the Sunshine books and this third and final book was no exception.
I received this book from the Publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I adored this series and am sad that this is the last book. I highly recommend reading the first two before reading this one as this ties up a lot of the endings to previously explored story lines. As with the rest of the series, A Hard Day for A Hangover has all the laughs, drama and crime I’ve come to expect from Darynda Jones.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest opinion.
aw, i'm equally sad and totally satisfied that this is the last book in this series! i love darynda jones, but i'm still making my way through charley lol so it's not a bad thing in my mind that this one is only 3 books. it's a delightful world, i love the characters, great story as always. cannot wait to see what darynda jones does next!
Did I forget nearly everything that happened in the first two books?
Yup.
Did I skip rereading them anyway because I was too excited to start this one?
Also yes.
Did it matter?
Nope.
They touch enough on the bits from the first two books to refresh my memory and allow me to enjoy this newest addition to the series without a reread.
Love when that happens!
Sunshine and gang are just as entertaining while bungling along in this book as I hoped.
This sass and sarcasm alone are worth it!
This cannot be read as a standalone without giving hella spoilers for the first two books.
You've been warned.
The series is fantastic, so not sure why you would want to skip the first two books, but you have the warning none the less.
Much love to NetGalley & St. Martin's Press for my DRC.
The final book in the series follows Sunshine and her deputy Quincy as they try to solve the mystery of who threw a Jane Doe over a cliff. They discover that the case is tied to other missing women investigations, and Sunshine's daughter Auri is integral in solving it!
The novel also wraps up the relationship with Levi after she remembers what really happened in the past, and the two reconnect while also shutting down his attempted family takeover if his business.
Multiple story lines, the usual hilarity and snark that you would expect from Darynda Jones' characters, and as with others, leaves the reader wanting more and a continuation of stories from this series!
This is the 24th book and third Darynda Jones series that I have read. Suffice it to say, I am a Darynda Jones fangirl. Jones is a master at creating bad@$$, smart, savvy, snarky and absolutely hilarious female leads. While she has mastered the urban-fantasy genre with her two previous series (Charley Davidson and Betwixt & Between), with Sunshine Vicram she has ventured into the murder mystery/crime thriller genre. And it’s a hit!!!
The book summary is more of a bullet list of storylines, not much meat. The book starts out a few days after the end of the previous book. This book is not a standalone either. You MUST read the first two books in order to understand the characters and storylines of this book. The primary storyline is the investigation of the missing and assaulted girls. Then there is the storyline of an escaped convict, that Sunshine requested to be transferred and since it’s a Ravinder brother, the FBI suspect Sunny is an accomplice. Then there is the storyline of Levi Ravinder (not the escaped convict) and Sunny and their daughter. Lastly, and by no means least, there is the investigation of the local serial flasher getting stabbed in the neck by a knitting needle. Needless to say, Sunny has a lot going on.
In the second half of the story, some of the storylines begin to merge, revealing some long-held secrets and some tragic twists. The end gets very scary for Sunny and her daughter as well as a busload of students. There are some nail-biting scenes that end tragically for some. This was a satisfying end of the trilogy and I’m saddened to see it go. I'm going to miss all of her snarky little quips at the beginning of every chapter. However, I have no doubt that Jones is already working on her next series. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
I want to thank NetGalley and St Martins Press for sending me this eARC.

Darynda Jones has a writing style that I easily connect with. Book 3, A Hard Day for a Hangover, in the Sunshine Vicram Series is delightful all the way through. The entire lineup of characters in the town of Del Sol are complex and engaging. Sunshine and her daughter Auri are witty, funny, and irresistibly endearing. The mystery in book three is once again top notch. Sunshine has a lot going on at one time. This kept the action going and the story never lags. Darynda seamlessly weaves the series overarching stories into this book and the ending was extremely satisfying.
The writing is quick and sassy. While there are darker topics intertwined in the story, the author balances everything in a pleasing way. While the series seems to be wrapped up, it would be great to get to spend more time with everyone in the town. I definitely recommend the series and reading the books in order will help with knowing everyone's backstory to keep all the characters straight.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the arc! This is my honest review.
Stephanie Plum, meet Sunshine Vickram. Sunshine is sheriff in a small town, complete with a hunky deputy chief, a motley crew of deputies, a crackerjack daughter who is on track to be an investigator at age 15. And then there's Levi Ravinder, a long-time crush of Sunshine and, it turns out, her daughter's father. I didn't realize that this is the last book in the series (only 3?) because I sure could use more.
I listened to the audiobook, read by Lorelie King, and it was so good! Ms. King gets the voices just right, although at times it's almost like listening to the other series.
I just reviewed A Hard Day for a Hangover by Darynda Jones. #NetGalley

A Hard Day for a Hangover by Darynda Jones is the 3rd book in her Sunshine Vicram series. Refresher: Sunshine (Sunny) Vicram, our heroine, is the newly elected sheriff in her home town of Del Sol, New Mexico.
Sunny recently returned home, having left town years before, at the age of 17; after she suffered a trauma, having been kidnapped and then pregnant. Sunny is a tough, independent, smart, funny heroine, which you couldn’t help but love. Her relationship with her now 15 year old daughter, Auri was wonderful, as I loved how close they were; while Auri was slowly learning to be like her mother in helping solve crimes.
Sunny has built her own team, as sheriff, with Deputy Quincy her right hand, not to mention best friend. Seems things never slow down in Del Sol, and Sunny is called to the scene of a young girl found over the edge of the cliff, brutally beaten, but still alive and unconscious. Sunny begins to suspect that this is another case of women being missing. Is this the work of a serial killer?
Auri, who likes to do sleuthing on her own, questioning others at school, much to the dismay of her mom. Despite the danger, Auri is too headstrong to listen, but she is very good in technical things, as well as finding some clues.
Levi Ravinder, the man Sunny has always loved, has his own problems, with his ruthless members of his family. Levi, who also cares about Sunny, will learn some secrets that will escalate their relationship. Levi runs the family distillery, and is determined to make it successful; but he knows other evil members of this family are threatening his life, as well as others.
The first half of the book was hilarious, funny, snarky that made us laugh often, especially with Quincy and her team; but the investigation still stood in front. I loved how Levi and Sunny came together, and the love Auri had for both of them. The second half of the book was so exciting, filled with non-stop action, danger, murder and violence. The suspense was so great, I could not put the book down, and the wild frantic ending had me on the edge of my seat throughout.
A Hard Day for a Hangover was not only an intense, exciting, but with lots of heartwarming humor that was a lot of fun. Darynda Jones does an excellent job of giving us light-hearted humor, as well as an intense suspenseful page turner. Jones also gives us great characters, such as Sunny, Levi, Auri, Quincy, Cruz, just to name a few. If you have not read the first two books, I suggest you start with A Bad Day for Sunshine, then A Good Day for Chardonnay, and now A Hard Day for a Hangover. I had heard this could be the finale of this series, but I would love to read more stories with Sheriff Sunshine Vicram.
I can't believe this series is over! Ms. Jones, I will need a novella to wrap up a few things, I'm not ready to leave this world just yet.
This trilogy brought so much joy to my life. Sunshine Vicram, her quirky family and precocious teenage daughter, are the perfect foundation for a madcap mystery series. The side characters are well established, fully fleshed out and super entertaining. This series is definitely worth the read!
Not to spoil anything, but the slow burn between Sun and Levi Ravinder (who is SUPER HOT, BTW) has an excellent resolution in this book, its worth reading just for this part alone
We are also always rooting for the racoon. IYKYK
The mysteries (because there is always more than one thing happing in Del Sol) are engrossing and keep you guessing until the end. If I can't figure out who did what before the end, I always count that as a huge plus in favor of the book.
Thank you St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for letting me read and advanced copy of this book!
OMG this book was sooooo good! I am totally in love with all of the characters but her daughter is my absolute favorite. I love that she's raising her up with an amazing sense of humor and bad-assery! I will always read a book put out by this author, she's the best!!
What a way to end a trilogy! And I'm super sad it's over and I need a new series like right now! Wonderful way to end it.
In book 3 of the Sunshine Vicram series, a lot is going on in Sheriff Sunshine Vicram's life: a series of women going missing, her awesomely-rebellious daughter Auri is out to singlehandedly become Del Sol’s youngest and fiercest investigator. Oh and then to top it off, there’s drama with Levi Ravinder—the guy she’s loved and lusted after for years. The guy who might just be her one and only. The guy who comes from a family of disingenuous vipers looking to oust him—and Sunshine—for good.
I love this series. From the funny quotes at the top of each chapter, to the dry wit and one-liners from Sunshine and Auri, this book will keep you laughing from start to finish. This series is perfect for fans of Janet Evanovich & Gina LaManna. I highly recommend it!
What a conclusion to Darynda Jones' Sheriff Sunshine Vicram's trilogy! What a fun read that had me laughing out loud and wishing the series would not come to a conclusion. Hopefully any number of the quirky and fun cast of characters may be found to have their own series in the future. Having only discovered Jones' series earlier this year, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read this ARC from St. Martin's Press and NetGalley. I highly suggest to truly enjoy the final book in the trilogy that you read the first two to introduce yourself to Sunshine, her daughter Aurora (AKA Ari), her parents, the love of her life Levi, her lovable best friend Chief Deputy Quincy Cooper, her deputies, and a cast of characters you'd wish to meet.
Now Sunshine never figured on being Sheriff of Del Sol, New Mexico and somehow won the office she did not run for. As Hard Day for a Hangover begins, Sunshine is suffering from a hangover. She would much rather it be a quiet day, but that wasn't going to happen. As the story builds one bad thing after another needs investigating from a stabbing, to a young woman's beating, death, senior citizen's home invasion, a prisoner escape, trying to keep her amateur investigator 15-year-old, going on 30, daughter Aurora from constantly putting herself in danger and worry about Levi whose life is in danger and she will do anything to protect him even though he's a hard one to keep track of. Now that's about all I want to share about the novel. I don't want to give anymore away then necessary because it is a must read. You will love the action, the mystery, the family, the camaraderie, the witty conversation, the characters, the humor and need to read it for yourself. I'd label A Hard Day for a Hangover my favorite book read this year.
I have loved this series so much. The story is dark, but the conversations Sun has with Auri are so funny and lightens things up a bit. I also love the boy band and the raccoon. Sun has been in love with Levi for most of her life. She now knows that Auri is his child, and she remembers things from the past and knows that Levi is the one who saved her all those years ago. Levi can't believe that Sun wants him to be in Auri's life. They have to tell her. How will she react? Will she be happy? The trick is for all of them to stay alive so they can be together. Levi's uncle has escaped from prison and another uncle is trying to kill Levi. What is up with Levi's family? Can they get a happily-ever-after?
5 stars - I loved it!
Trigger warnings: suicidal ideation; grief over the death of a parent; sexual assault; rape discussed; kidnapping; bus crash; active shooter situation involving minors; extensive injuries; blood; on page death by police officers;
We have finally come to the final Sunshine Vicam story and whoo this was a doozy. At the end of the previous book, Sunshine admitted to Levi she knew he was Auri’s father. This book picks up about a week later and things have not slowed down for Sunshine and her deputies. Like all of these books, there are a lot of cases happening, danger, crazy shenanigans, and of course, Sunshine’s unique blend of humor. But, please know that there is some heavy trigger earnings in this one, including an active shooter situation involving children, so please check the trigger earnings before reading.
Sunshine and Levi have been circling each other since the very first book and we finally get to see them become a solid couple. They have a lot of baggage to work through since Levi has been keeping the fact he was the father a secret, and Sunshine dealing with her memory loss from the abduction as a teenager. I really loved seeing them finally work things out and talk about what they wanted, instead of just throwing threats at each other. Levi really has been a great father for Auri, especially when keeping his distance, that I really loved seeing them bond with some real emotional father-daughter moments. Auri’s reaction to Levi being her father was what I expected and I loved it.
Sunshine finally closes the two cases she has been working on since the very beginning in this book: her abduction as a teenager and the case against Levi’s uncle Clay and former sheriff. The whole case with the former sheriff was unexpected at times and very suspenseful. I was very surprised by some of the revelations at the end about the sheriff. The fight against Levi’s uncle Clay was slightly anticlimactic but also, he was a shady person who didn’t like to get his dirty, so I wasn’t totally surprised by how that turned out. This whole case was really fascinating and enjoyable, especially with Sunshine’s unique blend of humor thrown in there.
Overall, this was an amazing ending for this series. I have really enjoyed Sunshine and Auri’s adventures at solving crimes in this little town, while also falling in love. I am sad to see this series ended but it was a wonderful ending. Also, maybe there will be a spin-off with Auri in the future.
I enjoyed the fast pace, snappy dialog and quirky characters of this entertaining series. Several mysteries are cleared up and all ends well to my satisfaction. I received an ARC from Netgalley and St. Martins Press. This review and comments are of my opinion.
Saying it loud and proud: I am a fan of Sunshine Vicram! Having read Jones last 2 books in this series, I was thrilled to see book #3 of the trilogy. I can only hope Jones might decide to do a little spin-off of this series because there are still stories to be told for each of the characters.
Synopsis: Book # 3 brings us a series of young women going missing, and Sunny feels powerless to stop it. There’s her persistent and awesomely-rebellious daughter Auri, who’s out to singlehandedly become Del Sol’s youngest and fiercest investigator. And then there’s drama with Levi Ravinder—the guy she’s loved and lusted after for years.
Like the previous two books, Jones keeps the action jumping back and forth between Sunny and Auri, from case to case, or from case to personal releationships. And every time you think you’re about to settle into one of the stories for a while, she yanks the focus to something else .
Reading a Jones book is like being tossed into the fray and just when you start settling in, you are time warped to another place and so on. A Hard Day for a Hangover is funny, charming and sweet. You will come for the mystery, but stay for the mom-daughter relationship which resembles the Gilmore Girls (Lorelai and Rory) - sassy, witty and full of love even in tough times.
If you haven’t read the first two books, stop here and go read them. I strongly recommend reading these books in order. Sunshine Vicram would make a great TV series. Hey, Netflix! Are you paying attention?
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin Press for sharing a delightful mystery that leaves you warm and content.
A fabulous ending to a fabulous series! As usual I hated to see it end and want more! Sunshine and the gang are another great cast of characters and even though I know this is supposed to be the last book, I’m hoping for more! Loved it!
I received an ARC of this book but this is an unbiased review. PROS: i enjoy the writing and it's a quick and easy read. There are also some poignant moments and there's a lot to love about some of the characters and the deep love of family inherent in each word.
CONS: the last book ended on a cliffhanger that I was expecting to see resolved in the first few pages but it wasn't, and that was just disappointing. I enjoyed the second book in this series but this one just didn't live up to the rest. It felt like the main characters were the audience, where things seem to keep happening to them and they find out about them after the reader does. Which just makes them look stupid. Also the quirkiness that was funny in the first book feels a little old and uncomfortable. Perhaps it's the times but old white people vigilante justice enabled by corrupt law enforcement just doesn't seem right.
