Much, much thanks to NetGalley and St. Martins press for the ARC on this one, which I couldn't wait to devour in record time, ......(same as the first two in this series....)
First, I'm utterly crushed, saddened and miserable at the thought that this book's the completion of Drynda Jones's Sunshine Vicram series. Only a trilogy? Nooooooooo........
Please, please, please don't let this be true. Because it's practically criminal how much fun these books are.......at one moment laugh out loud funny and then next making a reader (along with the characters) close to tearing up with a bursting heart.
Not an easy task, and the ''Sunshine' books pull it off page after page......to the point where once I come to the end, I'm already counting the days until the next book comes out. ,
That explains my depression at the thought of no more visits to the little town of Del Sol New Mexico, where Sheriff Sunshine Vicram and literally everyone else in the town wields a devastating,
wickedly deadpan sense of humor.
This quirky, oddball populace includes Levi, Ravinder the mysterious, taciturn love of Sun's life, Quincy, her mountain-sized BFF deputy and most importantly Auri, her impossibly adorable 15 year old daughter, fiercely beloved by the entire town....(with the one exception of Auri's high school arch-nemesis mean girl....)
I should point out though, that "A Hard Day For a Hangover" would not read easily as a stand-alone, since so much of the story comes from the previous two books. And you most definitely do NOT want to deprive yourself of all the laughs, surprises, thrills and throat-catching moments in the first two, (A Bad Day For Sunshine, A Good Day For Chardonnay)
"A Hard Day" finds Sunshine once again coping with a myriad of mysteries, danger, aggravations and numerous nutty encounters with Del Sol's one-of-a-kind townsfolk. There's a serial rapist-murderer tossing girls into canyons below the highway, and the ongoing peril of coping with Levi's criminal uncles, one of whom is a murderous local kingpin. (And speaking of her forever lover Levi, the sexual heat generated between them approaches near nuclear levels....)
And to add to her woes, daughter Auri, to Sun's everlasting outrage (but barely contained secret admiration) is as fearless and relentless a sleuth as her mom......which inevitably puts Auri in the crosshairs of her quarry and in harrowing need of rescuing..
While there's no real stunning revelations as to where the where the evil lies, you don't read this series for the twists anyway. The page turning comes from the laughs, the blink-back-the-tears stuff and the joys of hanging out with a whole bunch of unforgettable characters. who never stop making making you smile.
For me, that's an automatic 5 stars.......and a heartfelt prayer that this series goes way, way beyond a trilogy.
Sunshine, I love this girl and will miss her adventures. She is such a great character, with the right amount of heart, intelligence, sass, loyalty and bravado. Her love, Levi is a sexy mass of trouble, just the way we like them. I didn’t adore her daughter, maybe because she throws herself into danger at every chance. Yeah stupid invincible teenager syndrome. LOL It’s not that bad but as a mom I was screaming at her.
So in this final book in the trilogy (I wish it wasn’t) everything goes crazy, dead girls, mysterious connections lead them to a surprising conclusion. Levi and Sunshine finally talk and resolve their issues. Oh boy is there some history there. Everyone gets their time to wrap up loose ends, still I didn’t feel like the story was over. There is more there, perhaps Ms. Jones will give us a holiday short or brief visit with these characters again. :D
Honestly she is one of my top 5 authors, I’d never miss a book from her. Her books are always fun, with fantastic characters. Give her books a try, you’ll be very happy you did.
Oh my gosh I love these characters! The back and forth between Sun and her deputy BFF Quincey are hysterical. Her advice to daughter Auri can be quite unique. Reference sin cave and spelunkers. I'm still chortling over that one. Sun's overwhelming love for her daughter shines brightly despite sarcasm and quips. Sun's duty to the law and her community also shines as she investigates a possible serial killer, burglars, a gang that attacks with knitting needles, an escaped prisoner, and more. Business as usual in Del Sol.
Seriously one of the best series! I didn't think Charley Davidsen could be topped, but I may be more in love with Sunshine and her crew. I laughed out loud many times as I always do. Darynda writes the best banter and clearly has my kind of sense of humor. I highly recommend this series and will be impatiently waiting for #4!
I loved this book! The third installment of the Sunshine Vicram series did not disappoint. It is the perfect mix of mystery, romance and humor - made me laugh out loud! Your favorite characters are all back and up to their same shenanigans. Please don't let this be the last one! I highly recommend this series and suggest you start from the beginning. with A Bad Day for Sunshine.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Yesterday was a rough one for Sheriff Sunshine Vicram, but the day gets off with a bang despite her hangover. A young girl is found on the side of the road, another girl is missing, a prisoner that Sun had transferred has escaped and her daughter Auri is testing her patience. What else could go wrong? Oh yeah, she has a secret that could get her and her daughter killed. Fast paced, funny with quirky characters made this such a delightful installment in this series.
Guys, I love this series.
I am soooo stoked I got an early release, I read this in like 12 hours.
Now my question is is the last???? No epilogue to get a wedding, it sort of left on a cliffy~ it left you sort of wondering
Def a HFN but if this is the last I was expecting a little more.
I love Sun, I love her quirky ways... The Sin Cave made me lolololzzzzzzzzzz
Anyways I guess we will see.

As a huge fan of Darynda Jones, I'm ecstatic at having the opportunity to read and review the newest book in the Sunshine Vicram series. A Hard Day for a Hangover is every bit as entertaining as the first two books. Sunshine is back with her signature wit, take no sh*t attitude, and her bff Quincey at her side. Taking the helm of the Dangerous Daughters, cursed muffins, Randy the Raccoon running amok at the station, a pint sized gang, and a mystery surrounding an unconscious Jane Doe, Sheriff Sunshine Vicram should have more than enough going on in her life to keep her thoughts off sexy Distillery owner, Levi Ravinder. The star-crossed love of her life since childhood, Levi is as physically elusive as ever, but lingering questions from the past are finally answered. Sunshine's humor, particularly in conversations with Auri had me laughing out loud.
Auri continues to insert herself into her mother's investigations, sometimes in not so legal ways, and her relationship with Cruz continues to develop. Auri is faced with a tough decision after reading one of Cruz's poems that reveals his deepening depression following the death of his father. This was a very small portion of the overall plot, but one that I think deserves special mention given the rising suicide rates in our current culture. The poem itself was beautifully written, displaying Cruz's feelings of loss, emptiness and hopelessness, and although he denies that he is seriously considering suicide and states repeatedly the it is just a poem, Auri does the right thing by seeking advice from trusted adults. Her concerns are taken seriously and responded to.
The plot lines that began in the first book involving members of Ravinder family, their previous ties to the southern Mafia, and Clay Ravinder's ambitions are tied up in a satisfactory way, with the involvement of the previous Sheriff explained as well. I feel that there are still avenues to explore in this series, particularly the relationship between Quincey and Hailey Ravinder. The epigraphs at the beginning of each chapter are a treasure trove of humorous sayings taken from signs located in the businesses of Del Sol and Sunshine's tee shirts.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ebook arc. I am happy to provide my honest review.
I love this Sunshine Vicram series! It is the perfect combination of mystery, humor, and romance. Sunshine is the reluctant sheriff of Del Sol who has a precocious teenage daughter who is as good at solving mysteries as her mother and who lives next door to her parents who have interesting backgrounds. She also has a handsome and trustworthy love interest, Levi, who owns the whiskey distillery and whose family is full of crooks, scoundrels, and murderers. In this latest installment, Sunshine must find a serial killer and deal with Levi's notorious family. I thoroughly enjoyed all three of the books in this series and even though this book seemed to tie up lots of loose ends, I really hope Darynda Jones doesn't quit writing about Suhshine! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys lighter mysteries.
I’m going to miss these characters so hard!! I’m going to pray to the author gods that we get a spin-off with Auri all grown up and having followed in her mother’s footsteps. And of course we need more Levi, you know, helping to guide his daughter in the right direction….am I right?!
This series was an absolute surprise for me coming from a Reyes and Charlie devout fan. Sunshine and Auri have the same connection that we loved about Cookie and Amber and I would absolutely love to see mor in the future.
Darynda Jones somehow manages to write thrillers that feel light and fluffy while still including some rather serious topics/occurrences. I’m not sure how she does it! A Hard Day for a Hangover is the third book in her series featuring Sunshine Vicram, a thirty-something woman who is the sheriff in a small town in northern New Mexico, not too far from Santa Fe or Albuquerque. Jones fills in a lot of backstory, but if you haven’t read at least one of the previous novels, I think you’ll probably be a bit lost. (I was, with all the various townspeople mentioned, since it had been a while since I’d read the previous book in this series.) Because of the lightness in tone and amusing banter, including funny sayings and signs that start each chapter, it reads like a cozy mystery but there are some very dark goings-on in the story, so be prepared for that.
Sunshine’s feisty teenage daughter Aurora (best known as Ari) is a favorite character.
I switched off between the ebook and the audiobook, so thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to read/listen to an advance readers copy of this book. Lorelei King did a great job with the narration. All opinions are my own.
Warning - gun violence, references to teen abduction/kidnapping and rape (past)
A Hard Day for a Hangover by Darynda Jones is an interesting read. While I enjoyed the quirky characters and at times the storyline, there is a lot going on, most of which was unbelievable to me. Fiction I expect but many of the circumstances – especially the ones involving Sun’s daughter Auri, were over the top.
A Hard Day for a Hangover is an enjoyable read that I recommend if you are looking for an over the top storyline. Note: This did not feel like a thriller or mystery to me. The narrator, Lorelei King did a good job setting the pace and portraying the style of the novel.
This is Book #3 in this series about Sheriff Sunshine Vicram and quite frankly, I'm sorry to see it end! Darynda Jones has once again brought us likeable characters that make us laugh and cry. Yes, I laughed out loud at times and had tears rolling down my cheeks at other times. I love the banter between friends and family.
In "A Hard Day for a Hangover", secrets are revealed and questions are answered. There is a mystery to be solved (one that gets your heart pounding while you sit on the edge of your seat), and a relationship that needs to be fixed (that makes you smile and your heart will warm). Although the author gives you some background information, you really should read the first two books in this series to fully understand the background between Sunshine, Levi, Auri, Cruz and everyone else. You will be so glad that you did. Book #3 picks up right where Book #2 left off.
Although "A Hard Day for a Hangover" was read as an ebook, I listened to the two previous books in this series on audio. If you are into audio books, I highly recommend this series. Heck! I highly recommend this series no matter how you read it.
A thoroughly emotional satisfying conclusion to the Sunshine Vicram series. I don't want it to end :( but all the bows were neatly tied. I laughed out loud in some parts, held my breath in others and was willing to trade places with Sunny in a couple scenes :) I highly recommend reading book 1 and 2. Think of it as self pampering as you read them. I absolutely adore Aurora and Cruz. So maybe then can have their own series? I did grasp one of the perpts the first time they appear. This has plenty of twists, cold cases, current cases and what transpires in a small town high school and also had a few aw dropping. Thank you for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions. #aharddayforahangoer #daryndajones #stmartinspress #netgalley
Another Darynda Jones/Sunshine Vicram hit! This entry is a bit steamier and a bit more emotional than the ones before it. The only thing I did not like is that this is supposed to be the end of the series. There are many things that were left unanswered and others that we would really like to know about further. We didn’t even get an epilogue to fulfill our curiosity of the future. I absolutely love this series and I hope the fact that this is the final book will be reconsidered.
In A Hard Day for a Hangover, Darynda Jones wraps up her trilogy featuring Sheriff Sunshine Vicram. Sunshine and her daughter Auri continue to discover Sunshine’s past as her memories slowly emerge. Levi Ravinder’s role in Sunshine’s life also unfolds. Of course, there is a mystery to solve. And Ms. Jones’ quirky characters rise to the occasion. The author writes an engaging story that balances humor with character-driven suspense, a winning combination for readers.
Thank you to NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for an advanced readers copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is the finale of the Sunshine Vicram trilogy and I am sad to see it come to an end. I hate to say goodbye to these characters. I especially love the witty dialogue among the quirky cast of characters and their relationships. The author does a nice job with snappy conversations and one liners that move the story along at a great clip.
This book was a great final book of this series. The author did a great job of tying up the series very nicely. If you want a fun mystery series with a dash of romance mixed in, this series is for you!

Jones didn’t disappoint with book three in the Sunshine Vicram series. We start with a laugh and they just keep coming. In between there’s some “serious” conversations, plotting against family, secret society lessons, a lesson in the danger of knitting needles, heavy romance, and plenty of danger. Hangover is fast-paced and clears up some loose ends from Chardonnay, while new questions pop up.
Sunshine and Auri are back with the ragtag crew who do what they want while telling everyone what to do. Auri and Cruz storyline is wonderful and sweet. I’m thankful those two found each other. The sheriff and Levi scenes hit all the notes; humor, sexy, frustrating. Love them. We also meet some new people along the way and catch up with characters from previous books.
I love the way Jones weaves mystery with humor and romance. Her characters are so fun to explore and get to know. I love recommending this series to readers who are looking for some laughs with a side of danger because Jones threads the line so perfectly. If you haven’t checked out this series yet, I highly recommend you pick it up.
Ah I just love this series. Sun, Auri, and the supporting cast of quirky characters had me laughing from start to finish. This book and series is truly one of a kind. It’s a great comedy/police thriller combo. Highly recommend.
Thank you to netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I love Sunshine and Levi, Auri and Cruz and the whole Del Sol gang! I have loved the first two books in this series and this third one did not disappoint. I love that there is a blend of humor, romance, and tense situations.
I will miss this series and I would love to keep getting a look into their world!
