If you are looking for a fun fast paced mystery with some steam this it. I love it mostly for the snappy conversations. It is far fetched in so many ways but makes for very light reading.
Thank you Netgalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for e-ARC of the book.
As the Sunshine Vicram Trilogy is coming to an end, we see how Sheriff’s story unravels. While solving mysteries of the identity of an unconscious Jane Doe, Sunshine tries to figure out her relationship with Levi and protect her daughter Auri from getting into more trouble.
I enjoyed reading this book, full of humor, drama and mystery that I thoroughly enjoyed.
This series is absolutely fabulous! There is so much going on in this book, the author could have spread it out over several volumes. The characters are well drawn and believable and the storytelling superb. Highly recommended! . I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
Sunshine Vicram is having a tough time as Sheriff in this conclusion to the trilogy covering her life. Her daughter is trying to help solve female missing persons cases and her main squeeze Levi Ravinder is being threatened by his viperous family of criminals. A Hard Day for a Hangover is a coming of age time for her daughter Auri and a resolution to many of her personal issues. Lots of fun. read Darynda Jones A Hard Day for a Hangover.
I do love the Sunshine Vicram series. It is reminisce of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series. Humor runs deep throughout this series. Sunshine is the Sheriff in a small-town police force in the mountains of New Mexico. The town is full of quirky characters that Jones creates expertly. I would suggest to read these novels in order to get the full vibes of all these characters. This title is the third in the series. It is action packed with great pacing.
There are mysteries going on - all with Sunshine (I love her name, Sunshine Vicram) bouncing from one crisis to the next. The romance ramps up with Sunshine and Levi as well. I thought this one was the best in the series. Hoping that there is more! A fun, enjoyable, and entertaining read!

I love this book and series so hard! Sunshine Vicram is fabulous with her wit and sarcasm. Her daughter, Auri, adds so much life and levity and teenage angst. And then there's the guy Sunny's pinning over, Levi, who seems completely swoon-worthy. The mystery and overall storyline are icing on the laugh-out-loud, rollicking good time, cake.
Many thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.
This book was a DNF (did not finish for me). There was a lot of references to past books. What made it a dnf for me was making light of police abuse. The main character Sunshine Vicram is a sheriff. Another character that is also an officer says “maybe we can arrest his a little.” “ what does a little mean?” “ you know just rough him up some. I knew right then as a black person this book isn’t for us. Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Sunshine gives me life! I love this series so much for its likeable characters and great plotting. I am hopeful for a 4th book, but if this is the end of the road, I am very pleased to have been a fan.
I treated myself to reading all three books in this series and am so happy I did. A HARD DAY FOR A HANGOVER is the perfect ending (unless Darynda wants to write more, and in that case, bring it on).
For backstory, Sunshine learns that her parents helped get her elected as sheriff of her hometown, and when she gets there she gets down to business. What I loved jumping into this series was the sarcastic banter between Sunshine and her daughter, Auri. What’s the saying though? Too much of a good thing is a bad thing? There were times I felt some of the sarcasm was thrown in a really weird parts of the story, like it would’ve been inappropriate IRL. I appreciated that the spice factor increased with each book in the series, meaning the spice in this one was just the right amount (at least for me) without being too vulgar. There was always multiple crimes happening at once, but I think the author did a good job at juggling them throughout the book and it never got messy.
Thank you to the author, NetGalley, and St. Martin’s Press for my gifted eARC of this cozy mystery!
A Hard Day for a Hang brilliantly ties up all lingering questions while giving us mystery, romance and humor.
Waking up with a hangover is only the beginning to what Sunshine‘s day entails. Finding a young woman who’s been assaulted and barely conscious, a daughter, who is just as smart and intuitive as she is starts, digging into the case from a different angle. Not to mention the ongoings with the Ravinders, and her feelings for one in particular. The town of Del Sol is an interesting place, and Sunshine is the one that keeps it running.
Darynda Jones perfectly concludes this series in the best ways possible. With humor, emotions, and just a bit of weirdness to tie it all together. Del Sol is a unique town as are the people that live within it. Without giving too much away let me just say that we are given a story that also wraps up a series in a way that is perfectly fitting for the story. A Hard Day for a Hangover has mystery, action in a story that connects a family together. Darynda has the way that makes us fall in love with her characters and that doesn’t fall short here with Sunshine and her crew.
The third (and sadly, final) book in this series wraps up perfectly for Sunshine Vicram. Even if she is suffering from a hangover. Her days are still crazy in the town of Del Sol, NM with flashers, and knitting needles, and more seriously, a series of missing young women. Her coffee addiction hasn't slowed down at all. Neither has her daughter, Auri, who's skipping school with a vengeance to help investigate. Add all that to Sunshine's constant worry regarding her relationship with Levi Ravinder (who's also missing) and she's sworn off alcohol for good. Or at least until she gets home and can have a glass of wine. I have loved every single book in this series. I've loved the snark, the banter, the characters, and Sunshine's huge heart that beats inside a woman who strives for justice, and not just to honour the law.
While this may be the end of Sunshine's story...if Darynda Jones would like to fast-forward and write a series about Auri running the FBI, with Cruz alongside, I'll read every word.
#aharddayforahangover:
“I’ve always wondered what it would be like to kill people from a distance.” She snapped back when she realized what she’d said. “Bad guys. I mean, what it would be like to kill bad guys from a distance.”
AHDFAH is the third installment of the Sunshine Vicram series and it’s full of fun, sarcasm, a little spice and lots of danger. I felt this book was a bit more dark and menacing than the others, which totally brings it out of the cozy adjacent category. I had my hand to my mouth a few times and honestly, I live for this version of the series. Definitely my favorite of the three, this is a series that cannot be missed.
There are a lot of subplots in this book at one point. Jones even lists all the things that Sunshine is doing and I thought “holy crap, that’s a long laundry list” Thankfully there’s a main plot and the subplots don’t muddle with it too much.
Lorelei King is back as the reader for the audio and it’s absolutely perfection. King hits the banter and snark.. but also really makes your skin crawl on the gruesome parts.
Overall, a more dark Sunshine book, but I’m liking the direction it’s going. Thank you @macmillan.audio and @smpromance for the gifted copy. A Hard Day for a Hangover is out now!
I cannot get enough of sheriff sunshine vicram. She is a hoot. I don't think I have ever been hooked on a series like this one before. It was hilarious, quirky and such fun. I would definitely recommend this book.
Sherrif Sunshine is back in this third installment of a cozy, tough-in-cheek mysteries. Sunshine and her daughter Auri are in another jam and the mystery doesn't really matter- it's the chorus of townspeople, family members, and cops that do. This installment finds Auri put in danger yet again and Sunshine and Auri not always making the best choices (yet again.) Add in plenty of snark, some PG13 romance, and a paternity reveal or two, and this book was fun without it being stressful. This very Janet Evanivoch book was a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy (although I won't be surprised if this series is continued.)
Thank you to NetGalley for the advance copy for review.
Yet another amazing book by Darynda! The third book in the Sunshine Vicram series does not disappoint. The storyline progresses quite nicely. Darynda's unique writing style comes through giving readers a great read infused with humor. Definitely recommend!!
Sunshine Vicram, her daughter Auri, and everyone else in the town of Del Sol make me laugh out loud. I love the random nonsense like a raccoon in the police station, the storefront signs that start each chapter, Doug the flasher, her friendship with Quince, and the situation with Levi. Of course there is a mystery that Auri will get caught up in but the book and the overall series is so much more. Yes, there is closure and resolution to many storylines with this book, but it is heartbreaking to know there will be no more Sunshine in Del Sol.
Thanks to NetGalley and St Martins for the arc.
Jones has become the best of the best, Funny laugh out loud romp with great characters! Always a exciting time to see how she gets her characters out of trouble.
I really enjoy this series. Sunshine tries so hard to balance being a sheriff and a good mother to her teenage daughter, Auri. Auri has a tendency to get into trouble while trying to solve crimes herself. Sunshine juggles trying to catch bad guys, keep Levi safe, the one she has been in love with forever and keep their daughter out of trouble. It will be interesting to see how they navigate as parents to Auri since it is all new to Levi. Great story.
I am so in love with Sunshine and Rory. I mean Auri. These two characters have such Lorelai and Rory vibes that it's hard not to imagine what Stars Hollow would have been like if Lorelai had been the Sheriff. But, I digress. This series continues to delight and impress me with both the stories and characters and also the unexpected twists.
I wholeheartedly recommend this series to anyone that enjoys a spicy mystery and great banter.
Thanks, Net Galley, for the ARC!
4.25/5
If there is one series that would go on my list of top 10 series I love, it would definitely be the Sunshine Vicram series from Darynda Jones. I can't really come to terms with the fact that A Hard Day for a Hangover is the end of the line for Sunny and Auri's story, and I hope that despite what Jones has said, there will at least be a spinoff or something. As with the other 2 books before it, each chapter starts with a fun quip and there were some excellent ones in this installment. There was also more than one mystery that Sunny needed to solve, and of course, Auri played a part in solving more than one thanks to her inquisitive nature and desire to help others. And this book wouldn't have been complete without some romance, so prepare yourself for some spice!
I think it is highly advantageous to read this series in order so you can get the full backstory for all of the characters. Jones does provide some background information, but you will understand a lot more if you read in order. This is also a wonderful series to listen to on audiobook, and thankfully Lorelei King narrates all of them. I love the way she brings the entire cast of characters to life, not just Sunny, and though I love a full cast for multiple viewpoints, King has an exceptional ability to make them all different. Oddly enough A Hard Day for a Hangover ended up being my least favorite of the trilogy and it’s really hard to get the “why” of that across without sounding like I loved the book less than I actually did. I feel like when you are ending a series, the last book needs to be monumental, and even though there were lots of the same things I’ve known and loved about the series there wasn’t really anything extra brought to the table here. This could just be me, and I still got a ton of enjoyment and closure from this final installment. If you love goofy mysteries and endearing characters, I recommend this entire series, and they are a really quick read at that!
Thank you to the publishers for my complimentary listening and reader copies of this book. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
