Thank you so much to Netgalley & Macmillan Audio for this ALC of Lizze Blake's Best Mistake!
I ADORED this book! I immediately loved Lizzie and saw a lot of myself in her. I could not stop laughing and smiling reading/listening to this book. I especially loved that the love interest's name was Rake and hearing some of my fave authors names dropped (Beverly Jenkins & Lisa Kleypas) in this. Lizzie's character came to life in the the best way, she was just so bright and relatable. The chemistry between her and Rake was done so well. I really loved Edding's last book A Brush with Love and this was SO MUCH BETTER. But the things I loved in ABWL in regards to mental health still appeared in this book with Lizzie's ADHD and was written in such a tasteful way. I also really loved the ending with her mom (this may be a hot take), but sometimes it is what it is.
I went back and forth between the audio and the narration was STELLAR. I need Will Peters to read more romance books asap.
You will want to pick this book up, I will be telling everyone to read it!
Lizzie has always struggled to live a normal adult life. Struggling to hold down a job due to her uncontrolled ADHD, she has always felt like a failure. When she meets Rake, an Australian man visiting on a business trip, she decides to have a one-night stand with him. But after Rake leaves, she discovers she’s pregnant. Rake decides to move to the U.S. to platonically support Lizzie through her pregnancy. But can Lizzie and Rake overcome their respective issues and work together?
I listened to the audiobook version of this book, and I’m not sure if it was just my copy or something to do with the download, but the quality of the audio was not great. There was an annoying echo in the background that initially drove me crazy, but I was eventually able to tune it out. Both narrators were lovely. Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake is told in alternating third-person perspectives between Lizzie and Rake, and both perspectives have a narrator. My one complaint is that the actor who plays Rake is not Australian, even though the character is.
I loved Lizzie as a character. She’s so unapologetically herself, and she makes so much progress throughout the novel on herself and her relationships. I loved watching her come to terms with her ADHD and adjust her life to her needs. Rake is also a great character. He’s incredibly supportive of Lizzie and instantly accepts her as she is.
This was such a hilarious and heartfelt book. I laughed throughout, but there were also a few points that really hit home, especially around Lizzie’s relationship with her family.

4.5/5 stars
The narrators of this audiobook did such a wonderful job bringing Lizzie and Rake to life! I read the e-book ARC of this a few months back, and wanted to compare that experience to listening. I'm very pleased to say that everything I love about the book came across perfectly (if not better) in the audiobook. I highly recommend this book, in both forms!

When “one night only” turns into “two nights only”, which then turns into a surprise pregnancy, Lizzie Blake finds herself faced with more changes than she can fathom. Coupled with her unmanaged ADHD, Lizzie isn’t sure if she can do this alone but she knows she wants to. Hot Aussie baby daddy Rake wants to be involved and won’t take no for an answer. He leaves behind his life in Sydney to come to Philadelphia and be involved in his baby’s life, which also means being a partner to Lizzie. From platonic friends/roommates to something more, these two navigate their changing lives together as their baby grows.
When I read Mazey Eddings’s first book, I knew she was going to become one of my favourite authors. “Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake” has once again proven that she is a breath of fresh air in the romance genre. Her writing is fresh, fun, and oh-so enjoyable. Watching Lizzie’s personal journey, as well as her and Rake’s shared journey was sometimes sappy, sometimes steamy, and constantly funny. Eddings’s humour is splashed across every page and I LOVE that she can make her readers belly laugh one second and tear up the next. She also perfectly conveys the freneticism of ADHD, something I found myself relating to with a wince more than once!
Lizzie’s biggest roadblock in her life are her relationships. More specifically, how she perceives her relationships. One of the most emotionally impactful moments in this book was when Indira sat Lizzie down and forced her to examine where, exactly, she had screwed up her relationships. Lizzie had this skewed idea that she didn’t deserve a relationship because she always ruined them, but she couldn’t name a single instance where that was true. These moments where Lizzie examined her own RSD really resonated with me, and I recognized a lot of myself in Lizzie’s ADHD story.
I also loved that the peripheral relationships are just as important as the romantic relationship. While Lizzie’s relationship with Rake is the main plot, it is surrounded with other relationships that are just as important to Lizzie and to the plot. Her relationship with Bernadette is possibly one of my favourite boss/employee relationship ever, and I love that it gives Lizzie that maternal figure she’s always wanted without Bernadette trying to be her mother. Bernadette believes in Lizzie, and sees her potential, which is what Lizzie needs. And speaking of maternal figures, Lizzie’s mother is a piece of work and the fact that Lizzie puts her foot down and cuts the relationship was more powerful than a reconciliation or apology, which would have felt contrived.
If you like found family, sunshine in human form, and a *sprinkle* of only-one-bed, I highly suggest you pick up “Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake”.
I was so excited to receive this ARC. I've heard such great things about A Brush With Love and it has been on my TBR list for a while so my original plan was to read that then listen to the audio book of this one. Well I needed something to listen to on a long commute the other day so I decided to listen to this first.
Now if you've read any of my reviews, you know I love a good accidental pregnancy trope. The awkwardness and drama just get me every time. And this book gave me both of those things.
Lizzie feels like her life is chaotic. She struggles with adult ADHD and is trying to navigate her life while dealing with a disease not a lot of people really understand. She meets the charming Australian, Rake, one night at a bar and the two end up sleeping together. Rake has sworn of relationships after his last one left him broken and devastated, but there is something about Izzie that he can't stay away from. After a whirlwind 24 hours together, Rake heads back to his life in Sydney and Lizzie continues on with hers in Philadelphia. A few weeks later Lizzie finds out she is pregnant and knows the right thing to do is let Rake now. Then she leaves it up to him if he wants to be involved or not.
I really liked Lizzie's character. She bold and does what makes her happy. Edding's did a good job depicting the struggles adults have with ADHD. It was heart breaking to her Lizzie's thoughts on how it felt to be seen as lazy when in reality it was her brain made it hard for her to focus and stay organized. I also like Rake. He immediately jumps in to help Lizzie and does his best to make her life easier and make her feel like she is important.
There is a few steamy scenes so that's always a plus in my book. Overall I enjoyed the audio. I really liked the voice of Lizzie and even the voice of Rake didn't make me cringe when he did female characters unlike some others I have listened too. I can't wait to read the first book in the series now!
Thank you NetGalley and St Martin's Griffin for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Lizzie Blake is laugh-out-loud hilarious. She is such a fun, well-rounded character who I just want to be best friends with. Rake gave me major Roy Kent (Ted Lasso) vibes, and was so great in his own ways.
This book was such an enjoyable read and a great follow-up to A Brush With Love. I cannot wait for the rest of the series following the other girls. I fully recommend this book and series to fans of Ali Hazelwood and Emily Henry.
Problems I had: Who in the world is named Rake? That was straight up weird. Also— pregnancy trope. I normally would not like a book with the pregnancy trope, but going into this book and knowing that was the entire premise made it a much better read.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press, Macmillan Audio, and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review!
Wow!. Lizzie Blake’s Best Mistake is quite a book! It’s jam packed with humour and some very detailed, descriptive writing.. I chuckled, gasped (more than just baked goods are described), teared up in places and was constantly laughing out loud. The narration by Summer Morton; Will Peters is brilliant!
*Mazey Eddings has included an author’s note at the beginning of the book. that warns the reader about the various subjects/topics that are woven into the story.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio, NetGalley and Mazey Eddings for the opportunity to listen to this audio ARC.
I could not bring myself to finish the audiobook. The narrators were great and the story seemed promising but when I heard the line “shooting a goofy cross eyed look at his p***s” it just ruined the flow of the scene. I don’t think this authors style of writing is for me.
I requested LIZZIE BLAKE’S BEST MISTAKE without reading the synopsis, after enjoying the first book in this series, a Brush with Love. At first, the insta-love and accidental pregnancy had me unsure, as I don’t usually enjoy those storylines, but I am glad I stuck with this book, because Lizzie and Rake’s story really grew on me.
This is a pretty steamy book but it is also so much more than that. I thought Mazey Edding’s did a fantastic job of representing an adult with ADHD. Lizzie’s character is a reminder to treat others with grace and kindness. Sometimes I felt like the plot was leaning towards unbelievable, but yet overall, it was more that there is someone for everyone, which I really like to believe in.
I enjoyed the narrators and that it had a female and male voice. My only thought was it was sometimes distracting to me that Rake had an Australian accent when he spoke, of course, but not when he was thinking. I kind of wish the whole male POV was with an Australian accent.
I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series!
Thank you Macmillan Audio for the advance audiobook through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a fun one to listen to! The narrators were both great, and I really loved that all of the Australian characters were given accents, which made the audio book more believable.
As for the story itself, I did find it a bit predictable and at some moments a little unrealistic (Rake moving halfway around the world after he finds out his two-night stand is pregnant), however I still really enjoyed it and would read it again. Lizzie’s personality was hilarious. She kept doing and saying things that would make me laugh out loud, and that’s an aspect I really look for in a good romcom story.
Rake’s chracter almost seemed too good to be true, but I was a sucker for it! Him and Lizzie are great together and I really liked following their pregnancy together through this story.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes a good unlikely lovers story.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for #gifting me with an audio-ARC in return for an honest review. Look for an instagram review post closer to the release date.
I couldn’t put this audio book down! I loved the focus on ADHD. Mazey Eddings has become a must read for me.
I really love how Mazey Eddings characters are real. First, I didn't realize the Lizzie Blake was the same Lizzie Blake from her other novel A Brush with Love. This was a super pleasant surprise and the appearance of the girlfriends together made me smile because it is such a great friendship. Second, I love the dialogue. Not only is it funny, but it's real and mature. Mazey does an excellent job on focusing on adult relationships and personal characters growth. Lizzie and Rake's relationship feels like it is from real life. I love how the story jumps right into them meeting and does a great job at exploring them as individuals working through their own personal demons and also on their relationship with each other. My complaint is the constant sexual explanations. I mean, I know that's what the book is about, and in the first quarter of the book it totally worked, but after that there was so much of it and even the tension between the characters was constantly explained using the same type of sexual terms repeated over and over that I found myself rolling my eyes and thinking "I get it already, they really want each other." Had to remove a star for that because it got annoying and I think interfered with the story a bit.
This love story reminded me of one of my favorite 90s movies, Fools Rush In, but with an ADHD twist.
Lizzie is a neurodivergent 20-something who enjoys her friends, baking, and one night stands, until she meets Rake and he gets her pregnant.
I’m typically not a fan of the surprise pregnancy trope but this one actually did it well, mainly because the story was more about Lizzie and her ADHD than her pregnancy.
Although my personal experience with ADHD isn’t identical to Lizzie’s, I feel that Mazey Eddings did a decent job with making it part of the story but not having it be the reason for relationship issues. I found Lizzie’s issues with her mother extremely relatable, as my own mother also has insane expectations of me that I have been unable to deliver on. Lizzie’s feelings of self doubt and imposter syndrome were also extremely relatable as I struggle with the same things day in and day out.
Over all, I enjoyed this book much more than A Brush With Love, and I look forward to reading more from Eddings in the future.
Oh Lizzie Blake. She's an adult who manages living with ADHD and RSD (rejection sensitive dysphoria which is something that I have never heard of). She lives a life of chaos and prefers mindless sex to committed relationships. Until she meets Rake... an Aussie who just so happened to be visiting the US and has a 2-night stand which also unexpectedly leads to Lizzie getting pregnant.
This book had me laughing, swooning, and crying as Lizzie hashed out lifelong trauma experiences. I love her realness - I love Rake's empathetic and caring nature. I love the chemistry between the two, including the tastefully done spice!
Mot of all, I loved how well that the story came together. Beautifully written and completely relatable, Lizzie Blake's Best Mistake was truly... the best.
As for the audiobook, I'm a sucker for a good narrator and I loved the dual narrators (Summer Morton and Will Peters) as they told this story. The voices draw you in (especially Will Peter's aussie accent --- SWOON) and take you on an emotional ride.
Huge thank you to MacMillan Audio and Netgalley for the ALC in exchange for my honest feedback.
I adored this book. As someone with ADD who refers to herself as a "hot mess", I could see myself in Lizzie. Lizzie reminds us to give ourselves and others grace.
The plot of the story is based on a one-night stand that results in an unexpected pregnancy.
Lizzie was quirky, sarcastic, and funny. Her interactions with others and the way she used humor in serious situations was relatable.
Rake was the unbelievably "too perfect" guy. He and Lizzie have chemistry and he was a cinnamon roll that was easy to swoon over until he made me mad.
I'll be honest I was more drawn to Lizzie's character. I enjoyed seeing her character grow.
I couldn't put this down and read it in one day. The story centers around emotions and mental health. It was an enjoyable story about finding love and happiness despite the chaos of life.
Lizzie was introduced in A Brush with Love and other characters have a cameo. This is a standalone with a HEA.
Actual rating 3.5
I loved that this had the surprise pregnancy trope!!! If you don’t like that trope, this book is not for you. That’s the major plotline for it.
I did find this book very trope-y and sometimes found myself annoyed by Lizzie. Otherwise I enjoyed the book. It was cute and fun.
This was such a. Delightful surprise!
I 100% requested this book for the cute rom-com cover quality that it had, without really knowing what the story was about. I didn’t even know that it is the 2nd in a series, but was happy to know it could be read as a standalone.
This book had it all. We had steamy lust, swoony romance, family discord, friend support, friend drama, some adult ADHD representation & even some very NSFW baked goods. Are you intrigued yet?!
Lizzie was a gem. She was a hot mess, at times I wanted to tough love her and at times I wanted to hug her. I adored her story, her highs and lows and overall totally loved this book!
5/5 ⭐️
Thank you @netgalley for this #ARC! Super cute love story with a little twist. It’s got surprise pregnancy, one bedroom, and fake dating, so lots of funny banter. I appreciated how this book gave shout-outs to characters from A Brush With Love. This story, though funny and witty, dealt with some other things like mental health and family dynamics. I really enjoyed seeing Lizzie’s growth, especially when dealing with her family childhood traumas. Overall, great read for plot and spice, so 💯 recommend.
Also, I enjoyed this book in audio form and that made it even better. 😜
Wow, I loved this book! What a fun romance, and as an audio? The Australian accent was such a treat! Mazey Eddings has officially become an auto-read author for me. Her ability to create lovable characters with swoony monologues, dramatic grand gestures, and an emphasis on mental health is uncanny. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!
Enjoyed it! What’s not to love about an Aussie hero and a neurodivergent heroine? Thanks to the publisher for the arc copy. All opinions are my own.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for access to an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review.
An visiting-town romance for him, some ADHD for her, an accidental pregnancy and unexpected romance for them both. This is a quick read with a story that draws you in so you don't want to put it down.
Lots of family drama, toxic parents, discussion of abortion, dealing with ableism Lots of stuff we don't talk about discussed front and center!
Didn't read the author's first book, but going back to put it on my TBR!
